Halloweekend adventures

Hiiiii! 🙂 Happy Monday. How are you doing? It’s been a while since we’ve done the Daylight Savings things (in AZ, we don’t change the clocks) and, I have to say, I’m a fan. I woke up at 6am ready to start the day, and then relaxed in bed reading for AN HOUR before heading to teach. It was beyond amazing.

Did you have a good Halloween weekend? I’ve loved hearing about friends’ shenanigans and costumes over the weekend; I’d love to hear about how you celebrated!

The Pilot was off work on Friday, and we were trying to think of something fun and Halloween-y to do. In the end, we decided to go to the zoo. The weather was absolutely perfect, and petting the goats is one of our favorite things.

Here is the cutest little bumblebee. And yes, she did sting me.

Bee

We went to a friend’s party, and it was fun to be included in their annual festivities. Halloween in their neighborhood is a huge deal -it reminded me of our favorite festive neighborhood in Tucson- and her house was packed with parents and their adorable costumed kiddos. Livi met quite a few new friends, and we had a blast hanging out with everyone before heading out to trick or treat.

I made some Mummy Hot Dogs to take (followed this recipe with organic beef hot dogs and mustard eyes) along with a bottle of Apothic.

After the party and walking around the neighborhood, we came for sugar-buzzed bumblebee’s bedtime, put a sign on our door to indicate we were out of candy (we know to prepare a little better next year!) and watched Hocus Pocus. Perfect Halloween night.

I would like to say that the amount of Halloween candy I consumed made me not want to eat sugar again for a while,

but that’s not true at all. THESE CARAMELS are my fave holiday item from TJs. Pick some up; I promise they are amazing.

This past weekend was more teaching than the usual schedule: three barre classes + one Zumba.

We had a glorious taco dinner:

(recipe + some fun news to come soon!)

and I also had this incredible breakfast bowl from Crown Point Cofee.

Bfast bowl

It had egg whites, veggie sausage, avocado, tomato, onion and a spicy sauce. It definitely needs to be recreated at home!

How’d your weekend go? I’d love to hear about your weekend adventures. Anyone run the NYCM??

See ya later today with a TRX post + workout.

xoxo

What an awesome weekend! Livi looks adorable. And those sea salt caramels look fabulous. I’m glad you had a good Halloween in California! 🙂

  2. Liz on November 3, 2014 at 4:24 am

That breakfast bowl looks so good! Please recreate! 🙂

im a huge fan of daylight savings! Love having it be lighter in the mornings.

  4. Brynn on November 3, 2014 at 4:47 am

I really wish we would stop with Daylight Savings..it kills my inner clock for days. And now that I have a babe, it is even more difficult.
Looks like a wonderful weekend and Livi is so adorable! That is one bee that I wouldn’t run from 🙂

  5. Tina Muir on November 3, 2014 at 4:54 am

SO many good food pictures here, but the winner has to be those mummy dogs! So cute!! I need to remember those when I have kids someday! I love your little bumble bee, so adorable 🙂

I did not watch New York live, but did watch it on the TV. A few of my friends were in the elite section, and I felt so bad for them watching them being blown about in the wind, just shows how strong it was, especially if you are tiny like they are!

  6. Katie @ Live Half Full on November 3, 2014 at 4:57 am

This weekend was awesome and I loved the “extra hour,” I used it to fit in an extra long dog walk!

  7. Michele @ paleorunningmomma on November 3, 2014 at 5:03 am

Love the bumble bee costume 🙂 The time change is great for me since I get a bit more light on my run for about a week! A friend of mine ran the NYCM and really struggled with the second half. Those salted caramels look good even though I know candy is supposed to be done for now 🙂

  8. Amanda @ Slimplify Life on November 3, 2014 at 5:06 am

Cutest bumblebee! I took the phrase, “okay, just one more piece of candy” to the next level this weekend. Sugar free recipes are in my future this week :).

  9. Amber @ Busy, Bold, Blessed on November 3, 2014 at 5:09 am

Daylight savings is great in the fall, but losing an hour in the spring is really tough!

Livi is so cute. I love Halloween 🙂 Those tacos look amazing! Looking forward to the recipe.

I went as a bee once! Such a fun costume! Liv looks so cute.

  12. Christina @ The Beautiful Balance on November 3, 2014 at 5:26 am

I recently moved from Arizona to the Midwest and I did the same thing. I woke up at 5:30 am and was wide awake. If only you could never get used to it and always feel like that haha. Those mummy hot dogs are so insanely cute. I bet the kids loved them!

    • Fitnessista on November 3, 2014 at 7:51 am

right?! why can’t it always feel like this? haha

  13. Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine on November 3, 2014 at 6:00 am

Aw, So cute! I am actually liking this daylight savings right now since it’s sill sunny out at 6 oclock in the morning!

  14. Vera on November 3, 2014 at 6:02 am

Our Halloween was really cold and windy. So trick or treating was very short lived unfortunately.

  15. Lauren @ The Bikini Experiment on November 3, 2014 at 6:18 am

Liv looks so adorable! Love the bumble bee costume. We did not have one trick or treater and had a generally low key weekend! My boyfriend and I did a Halloween workout and enjoyed the weather in Austin. Two lovely fall days!

  16. Britt@MyOwnBalance on November 3, 2014 at 6:26 am

    The bumblebee costume is adorable!

Didn’t run the marathon this year but we can see the runners going up 1st Ave from our apartment window so I got some cool photos of the leaders as they flew by!

  17. Lizzie @ The Magic Tree on November 3, 2014 at 6:46 am

Those mummy hotdogs look fantastic and are so “you!” Also need to pick up those TJs chocolate. From what I know of Livi, I am surprised she didn’t demand that her mom and dad dress up hehe 🙂

    • Fitnessista on November 3, 2014 at 7:50 am

haha at one point she did say “mama you can be a mama bumblebee, and dad can be a baby bumblebee”

  18. Emma @ Life's A Runner on November 3, 2014 at 6:47 am

That bumblebee costume is too cute for words! I definitely did not run the marathon but I had a ton of fun following all the action! One day I will be there in real life, can’t wait!

  19. Meg @ A Dash of Meg on November 3, 2014 at 6:49 am

wow that breakfast bowl looks incredible!!!!!!!!!! i would recreate that for sure!!!!!!!!!! Liv looks like such a little princess in that costume 🙂 Oh i just love her.

Eddie and I spent the weekend in Saskatoon. We went to movies, to great restaurants, and just toured around! Love the weekend, but headed home today 🙁

    • Fitnessista on November 3, 2014 at 7:50 am

that sounds like a lovely weekend <3 xoxo

  20. Laura B @ FitMamaLove on November 3, 2014 at 6:56 am

Oh my goodness, what a darling little bumblebee! I cam on here fully expecting to hear complaining about Daylight Savings since I knew you didn’t have it in AZ and I’m pretty sure you are the first mom of a young child ever I have heard NOT complain about it! My kids were waking up at just about 7, so now they wake up at just about 6, which I’m not a fan of! Looking forward to getting them back on track soon, hopefully!

  21. Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries on November 3, 2014 at 6:59 am

Livi is the cutest little bumblebee I’ve ever seen! I don’t think I’d be one bit upset if she stung me. 😉 Glad you all had a fun weekend!

  22. Gena @ Life FuelFilled on November 3, 2014 at 6:59 am

I am loving daylight savings this year too! I was finally on time this morning 🙂 Cutest bumble bee ever and I must try those chocolates – chocolate and caramel are my two favorite things!!! Thanks for sharing.

  23. Christa @ Living Unbalanced on November 3, 2014 at 7:07 am

I’ve been eyeing those Chocolates at TJs–now I will be purchasing! I am obsessed with their dark chocolate honey mints! Even better in the freezer 🙂

    • Fitnessista on November 3, 2014 at 7:49 am

i like the honey mints too! the caramels are even better 🙂

  24. Carrie on November 3, 2014 at 7:19 am

Daylight Savings Time is great in the mornings – it’s so much easier to get up when it’s actually a little light outside. Of course, the trade-off is working out in the dark after getting home from work, but I’ll take it to feel more energized in the AM.

Also, I’m jealous of your beautiful days and temps! It was 30 degrees this morning, and my face is so dry from the switch to cold and windy weather and turning the heat on that it looks like I got sunburnt and am peeling. Luckily, the skin adjusts after a week or two 😉

    • Fitnessista on November 3, 2014 at 7:49 am

exactly! it’s so nice to wake up and not feel tired 🙂 why can’t it feel like this always???
30 degrees. ahhhhhhh :/ just reading that made me shiver

  25. Megan @ Skinny Fitalicious on November 3, 2014 at 7:24 am

Lov is adorable! I don’t have kids so I live bycarlessly through friends. Um veggie sausage? I never heard of it but I’m sure I need some in my life!

    • Fitnessista on November 3, 2014 at 7:48 am

      it was SO GOOD 🙂

  26. Carrie (This Fit Chick) on November 3, 2014 at 7:38 am

What a cute bumblebee!!! I love the mummy dogs- so cute!

  27. Catalina @ Shades of Pink on November 3, 2014 at 7:39 am

Livi as a bumblebee is adorable, even if she stings 🙂 My baby was a tiger, he kept roaring haha 🙂

    • Fitnessista on November 3, 2014 at 7:48 am

      awww that is so cute!

  28. Irina on November 3, 2014 at 8:05 am

Livi looks adorable in her costume! I bailed on Halloween this year but almost wished that I could borrow someone’s kid for the night to go trick-or-treating haha…I want the candy!

    • Fitnessista on November 3, 2014 at 3:16 pm

hahah! tom told liv “we bought the bee costume, you share the candy”

  29. Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl on November 3, 2014 at 8:47 am

I was a bumble bee one year for Halloween, and my mom thought it was so strange that I wanted to be one because I HATE bees. It’s weird how that works out. Livi is a cute little bee!

  30. Julie @ A Better Life with Burgers on November 3, 2014 at 8:49 am

I had NO idea those caramels are a seasonal item! I happen to be going to TJs today…perhaps I’ll need to try those out. You know, as a gift idea…to make sure…they’re good…to give to other people…

Looks like a fun Halloween! Can’t wait to hear about your fun secret project!!

    • Fitnessista on November 3, 2014 at 3:16 pm

you have to test them before giving them 😉

  31. Ashley @ A Lady Goes West on November 3, 2014 at 8:49 am

Hi Gina! Love her little Bumblebee costume. In the City (I’m in SF) I didn’t get to see any kids dressed up, sadly, but I did see a few fun costumes on adults. My husband and I didn’t actually partake in the craziness this year, opting for happy hour on Friday night. I taught BODYATTACK on Saturday morning and we laid low the rest of the weekend, which was pretty nice. Happy Monday to you! 🙂

  32. april on November 3, 2014 at 8:53 am

liv is the cutest bumblebee! glad your family had a fun halloween 🙂

are those lentil tacos? either way, they look delicious and i cannot wait for the recipe!!

  33. Lucie@FitSwissChick on November 3, 2014 at 8:59 am

Liv looks ADORABLE. So so cute!!
We don’t celebrate Halloween here, but I was out collecting fall flowers in the field with my Mom and we went to a fun fair too. So I definitely got my sugar fix 🙂

  34. Amy S on November 3, 2014 at 9:24 am

Your entire post is making me so hungry. Those mummy hot dogs are TOO CUTE and they look delicious too! Good call on the TJ dark chocolate sea salt caramels…someone gave them to me for Christmas last year and they were awesome. I’ll have to go pick up a box (or four, lol!) now that they are available! That taco dinner looks fantastic, too. I look forward to reading the recipe!

  35. Robin on November 3, 2014 at 9:49 am

You’ll appreciate this, we trick-or-treated from our house to Pizza Port, it worked out just fine!

    • Fitnessista on November 3, 2014 at 3:15 pm

ahhhh yes! very well done 🙂

  36. Linda @ TheFitty on November 3, 2014 at 9:55 am

Ooh, I think I forgot all about mummies as part of the whole “Halloween thing”. I wish I made this for halloween! I did however, make banana ghosts.

  37. Lindsey A on November 3, 2014 at 10:03 am

I am obsessed with those TJs caramels! Even better is that my husband doesn’t like the combo with sea salt so they are ALL mine 🙂 Jealous though, I was at TJs on Sunday and they are not yet in stock here. I’ll be on the look out!

  38. Tracy on November 3, 2014 at 10:59 am

The fall time change rocks!!! Loved my extra hour yesterday!

Liv is just about the cutest bumble bee I’ve ever seen 🙂

We didn’t get very many treaters this year leaving my kids VERY happy with all our leftovers! Haha

Do I spy lentils in those tacos?? Can’t wait to see the recipe!

  39. Morgan on November 3, 2014 at 12:00 pm

I’m taking advantage of Daylight Savings Time by trying to use that extra hour to get up in the morning and work out before work before my body adjusts to the time change. Please say there’s a November workout calendar in the works. I’m too tired to come up with something at 5:30!

  40. Julie on November 3, 2014 at 12:21 pm

OMG I don’t which is cuter: Liv in that bee costume or those hot dog mummies! I wish you hadn’t posted the pic of those TJ caramels… 😉

I love gaining an hour in the fall, too, but wait ’til spring rolls around… losing an hr is rough!

  41. Angela @ HonestlyAngela on November 3, 2014 at 2:14 pm

Livi looked adorable in her bee costume! I know what you mean about feeling like you don’t want sugary snacks for awhile – I am candied out!

  42. Tricia @ A Couple of Dashes on November 4, 2014 at 1:32 pm

That breakfast bowl looks amazing! Can’t wait to see a recipe!

  43. Tiffany on November 4, 2014 at 5:51 pm

Have you noticed a really booming “food in bowl” trend lately?! Just thinking about the burrito bowls, acai bowls, and now breakfast bowls and chia pods (small bowl). Please update if you see of anything else that’s a bowl trend… soooo curious! hahah Hope all is well! xx

  44. Cassie Vaughn on November 5, 2014 at 7:22 am

  45. Amanda @ Diary of a Semi-Health Nut on November 6, 2014 at 8:46 pm

omg cutest bumble bee ever! Except for my youngest sister…she was like two months old when we dressed her like a bumble bee so I mean baby bumble bee..hard to beat 😉 Livi is looking so grown up! Or maybe I just haven’t read in awhile ha.

I forgot to watch Hocus Pocus this year! That is a movie I need to own! Totally one of our favorites growing up!

  46. Maggie @ Veg Fiend on November 9, 2014 at 5:49 am

I had no idea Arizona doesn’t do daylight savings time. Whaaaaa… mind blown.
