Healing

Do you like Bella’s new haircut?

Bella3

Wait, it doesn’t look like she got a haircut?

That’s because it wasn’t professional.. I did it after she got stuck in a scorpion glue trap this afternoon.

I had to cut some superfluous hair to get the sticky paper off the side of her right paw- poor girl, she was so confused. Yes, any type of trap is cruel, but there was no way I was going to chance a scorpion getting into Liv’s nursery. I put the sticky glue paper by the entrance to the nursery in the corner, and Bella has never messed with it, until today.

I knew I should have waited to write that “TDY misadventures” post until later 😉

Work was good today.

Work snacks

(Tempeh, quinoa and veggies, steamed eggs, carrots, guacamole, almond butter jar + apple)

My last hour was stretch and I taught a slow, relaxing stretch class. I’ve mentioned it before, but I tend to go the “airy fairy” route and give meditation cues while stretching. Today I focused a little bit on healing and the body’s amazing ability to repair itself if we treat it right, etc. etc. and at the end of class a woman came up to me- a victim of a media-publicized tragedy. When she came up to introduce herself, I started crying… and she told me I could hug her. When she said I shouldn’t be sad, I explained that they were half tears of sadness for what she went through, and the rest were happy tears because she’s ok.

As much as I love my jobs and everything I have the opportunity to do, it’s easy to feel like I’m being pulled in many directions. Talking with her brought me back down to the core of everything I enjoy, even though many of them don’t seem to have much in common, they have one key focus: I love people. I feel fortunate that I had the chance to meet and talk with this woman, and left work with puffy eyes and a huge dose of inspiration.

Away from the mushy stuff and onto the snack I enjoyed waiting for the Pilot to get home:

Ice cream and tamale

A few bites of chocolate coconut milk ice cream and a tamale- both eaten with a fork to save a dish 😉

Going to enjoy some vino and dinner, while catching up with the mister.. he just called to say he’s pulling into the neighborhood.

Hope you’re having a great day <3

xoxo

Gina

Something to talk about: When was the last time you had a huge dose of motivation or met someone inspiring? If you could meet or talk or anyone, who would you choose?

Oh my gosh, I want some fro-yo or coconut milk ice cream now! I’ve never tried the TJ’s brand.

I have to say, this post totally made me reflect on my job.. I love people and just want to help them, and sometimes I’m not sure I feel like I’m making the kind of impact I want in my current position..I feel like I should make one of your vision boards or something…

Hehe. It looks like you celebrated National Chocolate Ice Cream Day unintentionally. I celebrated today too, but with some Ben and Jerry’s Phish Food. I’ve had coconut milk ice cream once before and it was good so I’ll have to give that kind a shot sometime.

I love how you can meet someone and they can touch your life without even knowing you. I love that about people in general because we all have so much in common without realizing it. I would have loved to meet Mother Theresa and learn from her.

That is so scary that there are scorpions around! I’d be freaked out too, I totally understand the traps. I want to say I hope Bella learned her lesson with playing with unusual things but judging by my puppies, nope, probably not! ;p

  7. Jess on June 7, 2012 at 11:49 pm

Your stretch class sounds sooo relaxing! Lovely that you can have a positive impact on someone who has been through a tragedy. My mum always told me to smile at everyone because you never know what they have been through.

I don’t think I could live anywhere where I would have to put scorpion traps in my house. Nope nope nope. Scorpions give me the willies. If I had a baby I would probably have traps lining the entire perimeter of the room. haha. Not really. I did just read “The Pearl” by John Steinbeck, so maybe I’m a little over sensitive about babies and scorpions.

Awww, Bella is still SO cute! Sorry if I missed it, what kind of dog is she? I am constantly inspired by the individuals in the support group I run for people who have had strokes with resulting language disorders (I’m an SLP grad student…) I can’t imagine what they go through but their resilience and positive attitudes are super motivating!

That’s not bad for home hairdo. One of my cats once needed one after a run in with actual glue. Well, an actual glue-weilding toddler that tried to decorate him – that’s one patient cat. It was hours before I found him all covered with glitter and dried glue. After I ‘fixed’ that he looked like he had a bad case of some horrible disease that makes fur fall out in big patches. It took months to look right again.

Gina, what a moving post. I was talking to a young girl last week who was the victim of some horrific crime and she seems “fine” but I have not been able to get this random strangers’ story out of my mind. I am glad you were able to hug it out with this woman in your class and have a good cry 🙂

  13. Sarah on June 8, 2012 at 2:56 am

How did I not know about scorpion glue traps when I lived in Phoenix?! I hate those buggers with a passion, mostly because I’ve almost stepped on a few. Never heard if the glue traps though :).

My Granny is my inspiration! She is healthy, active and lives life to the full. She has instilled within our family good values and a healthy and positive outlook on life. Nothing beats catching a movie with her and making lunch together at her place. Oh, and I love Bella’s haircut 😉

  15. Eucalya on June 8, 2012 at 6:43 am

Bella is SO cute! I love reading your blog everyday (or sometimes more than once a day…) i really love the fact that you post a lot, and always about things that interest me! All the food you post looks delicious and it really helps me to try some new and healthy recipes! I just wanted to ask you for an advice: i might start Zumba lessons in september and i don’t know how i am supposed to dress for this. Something baggy or tight? xx

  16. Kristen L. on June 8, 2012 at 7:50 am

A lot of people say this, but my grandmother is my inspiration. She raised me. She is 96 years old but don’t let that fool you. She was lively as ever up until a couple weeks ago. She had an unfortunate reaction to some antibiotics and she will probably pass away any day. I am going to miss her like crazy since she was basically my mother. But she inspired me to live life, be healthy and indulgent, and keep my faith.
At almost 100 years old, she’s always followed her heart and never did what she thought “others” might expect of her and she has very little regret in life. That’s pretty darn good. I’m only 27 and I already have several regrets. I need to change that ASAP!

    Great Post.

Motivation can be hard especially if you are training by yourself. It’s always preferable if you can have a training buddy.

This is a great article on motivation http://is.gd/sJ7Bhg

Beautiful post Gina!!!! Your love of people certainly shows in your blog. Thanks for your daily inspiration. I’ve worked with the homless and I’ve been moved to tears countless times by the stories people have shared with me. Have a great weekend!

I just went a read the steaming how-to post and I have a question before I ruin some eggs – hahahahaha. (I hate boiling eggs, too, and have been spending too much moolah on bags of boiled, peeled eggs!)

Did you boil the water first and then put the eggs in the steamer for 15 mins? Or start them cold like you would if you were boiling them and start counting the 15 mins from when the water starts boiling? I’m going to guess the first one, but I just want to make sure =]

    • Fitnessista on June 8, 2012 at 12:35 pm

      boil the water first 🙂

I have got to try this TJ Chocolate Coconut Milk Ice Cream ASAP!

This post was so timely for me – my husband and I went to see Kyle Maynard speak last night. He was born without his arms or legs and hasn’t let that stop him from accomplishing so many things in his life. It truly was inspiring, and its a real eye opener to think about life from a different perspective sometimes.

    Have a great weekend! 🙂

That’s a really nice story. When I’m not being a Personal Trainer, I work in humanitarian development in post-conflict areas of Africa. The ordeals that people have lived through are incredible, and some of the stories people have about how they are moving their lives forward are so inspirational. It always makes my day to day worries seem like absolute luxury.

  23. Colette on June 8, 2012 at 10:47 am

We get scorpions all the time in our house, so when our kids were babies, we would put the legs of the cribs in glass jars (old, cleaned out olive jars). Scorpions cannot climb glass. We still have never found any scorpions upstairs, much less in our kids rooms, but it still gave us peace of mind.

    • Fitnessista on June 8, 2012 at 10:53 am

i’ve heard of that trick, but the legs of the crib are huge and oddly shaped (have wood scrolls), so i haven’t been able to find jars that fit :/

  24. Mallory on June 8, 2012 at 6:20 pm

Your post brought me to tears! I’m glad you’re able to positively influence people through your line of work. I bet you impact more people than you know 🙂 the person who has most recently motivated me is a high school classmate who passed away in Afghanistan. I’m in the military too, but in a far less risky position. It always brings me back to reality when I remember the sacrifices others make in the line of service. Definitely makes me give 110% at work!

  25. Kate on June 8, 2012 at 8:18 pm

Hi Gina! I did a rotation last year at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center as a medical student. Talk about motivation…none of my “problems” mattered after getting to spend time every day with our Wounded Warriors. It was hard for me to keep it together sometimes. These are the toughest, most motivated, amazing patients and every single one of them is a huge inspiration!

  26. Katie @ Talk Less, Say More on June 8, 2012 at 9:02 pm

I love how some random occurrences can bring us motivation and joy. It really just proves it’s the little things in life.

  27. Jena on June 8, 2012 at 11:10 pm

Oh, I bet you got to teach Gabrielle Giffords, so amazing and inspring, she never gives up. She is such a hero.

    • Steffi on June 9, 2012 at 1:21 am

I thought so immediately, too! She is an impressive lady, an inspiration to us all, regardless of anyone’s political views.
