Healthy dairy-free protein ice cream
This protein ice cream contains ZERO grams of refined sugar, and up to 20 grams of protein. It’s dairy-free, gluten-free, and tastes ridiculously amazing. Dessert first? YES.
Hi friends!
How are you? Hope you’re having an amazing morning! We’re just hanging out here at the house and going to hit up the pool later this afternoon.
Let’s start the day with a little dessert, shall we??
I’ve been really trying to up my protein game lately. I don’t really love having chicken during the day unless I make it in advance, I’m traumatized from deli meat (I’m pretty sure I had listeria last summer when I got super sick before the IDEA conference), and a girl can only eat so much tuna and eggs. An easy way to get extra protein is to add a couple scoops of collagen to my afternoon coffee, and I’ll have a satisfying snack before bed to help stabilize my blood sugar. I’ve been looking for ways to change up my game.
When I saw the protein powder in the pantry, I realized it had been a hot minute since I’d made a protein powder creation to share with ya.
And then it hit me: ice cream.
I’m not even really an “ice cream person.” If it comes down to it, I want a cupcake, gooey chocolate cake, a cookie or a brownie. If you put ice cream on top of my brownie, I’ll probably have a couple of bites, but that’s not why I’m here.
But protein ice cream? I can get behind that.
(Word to the world: this chocolate bar makes an awesome chocolate shell. Just melt, drizzle, and it will harden outside the ice cream.)
Here’s the super easy recipe if you’d like a healthy protein-packed treat tonight!
Dairy-Free Protein Ice Cream
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup almond milk
- 1 serving chocolate plant-based protein powder (I used Onnit but it’s not my fave)
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon vanille
- 1 banana or 1 cup Thai coconut meat
Instructions
- Blend all ingredients in a high-speed blender. Place in the bowl of an ice cream maker and process until creamy. If you don’t have an ice cream maker, no worries, just place in a glass container to freeze for a few hours. You may have to let it defrost a bit before eating.
The ice cream alone was pretty amazing… but it was even more amazing atop these grain-free brownies. I LOVE the ingredients, and they’re a fun treat to make with Liv since she can almost do the entire thing herself. (If you want to do completely homemade grain-free brownies, these are another family fave.)
There we go.
Please let me know if you give it a try!
I would probably have a vanilla protein powder version of this before bed (the caffeine in the chocolate wires me a bit), but loved how satisfying this was.
Do you snack before bed? What’s your go-to?? I’ll usually have tea with collagen, a goat’s milk Greek yogurt, or a bowl of cereal with almond milk. (<— the Pilot got me into this habit) Oh, or wine. haha.
xoxo

Interesting recipe! Trader Joe’s came out with a new plant based protein which I’m feeling very curious to try out.
The nutritional label looks pretty good and the price is incredible.
This looks so good! I love ice cream and am semi-lactose intolerant, so this looks perfect for me. I almost always have a snack before bed. Lately it’s been tea and an apple with almond butter, or a couple of clementines. This looks much tastier though!
I love berries & Greek yogurt before bed, but I wouldn’t complain about having this every night!
This came at the perfect time! I’m not eating dairy for a little bit in an effort to heal/cure some neck pain I can’t get to go away. This is PERFECT! Thank you : )
hey girl! could you do WIAW posts again every couple of weeks or so? it’s really helpful being able to see how you balance your carbs and protein amounts during the day since that’s something I have a hard time with. plus it helps give me ideas for other options I can eat instead of the same things every day. thank you! 🙂
So easy! Looks delish, especially on top of a brownie. I remember you being sick at IDEA — darn lunch meat hahah! I get most of my protein from Greek yogurt, eggs and collagen! 🙂
I don’t think the protein in collagen powders is the same as other dietary proteins. I noticed my tub said ‘not to be used for dietary protein supplementation’ or something. I thought ‘I guess that’s why protein powders all taste like protein powder and not like nothing, like collagen powder’ (which is my preference– no PP taste). Which I don’t post to be correcting anyone, just in case you want to explore it before counting it as a protein source.
Here’s one person’s explanation–

i’m so glad you posted this. i’ve totally been using it as protein powder hahaha. i’ll do more research
Brownies and ice cream is a perfect night treat! YES, I always have a snack- usually a protein cake (that I make) and apples and peanut butter!!
Yum! The lazy mom in me would pop the blended mixture in popsicle molds for convenience. That chocolate brand is so good! Im a fan of the midnight (zero sugar or fake stuff) dipped into their roasted coconut butter. Ahhhhmazing!
I just put them in popsicle molds myself! We’ll see how it turns out!
Those brownies are great. Can’t wait to try the protein ice cream, as I love ice cream, but try to minimize dairy. Thanks!
please let me know what you think!
Gosh!
These were not just tasty, but better than I thought they would be. I added some extra peanut butter to the mix and WOW.
The kids liked these so that’s huge win.
Tasty and healthy.
can I use free/coconut milk instead of almond? Great recipe but I need a substitute..
totally!
