I dropped the “H” bomb

Hey everyone! TGIAF!!! Hope your morning has been bueno 😀

Last night, Megan and I busted out a little organic vino:

001

And proceeded to punish ourselves by watching The Notebook and crying like little babies. I’ve seen that movie maybe 20 times.. and every time it’s just as devastating. That Nicholas Sparks sure knows how to pull on a girls heart strings!!

I didn’t have any bad vino dreams, so it looks like it’s back in my life for good 😀

This morning was nothing out of the ordinary: a walk with the puppers and a sludge

002

It was a pretty light green color because I’m outta spinach :/

After bfast, I updated the iPod with some new songs from yesterday’s playlist and put on my new sneaks from Tucson to take them for a test run.

Leggies:

004

The verdict? I hated them (that’s right, I said the “H” word). If you’ve been reading the bloggy for a while, you know I love my Asics. These particular ones were heavy, bulky and digging into the inner part of my foot.. all things you don’t ever want from a running shoe.

I did 4.5 slow and painful miles before I had to stop, and then did 10 minutes of abs (3 sets of 15 reverse crunches with a 6lb kettleball in between my knees, 3 sets of 12 crunches on a bosu, and 3 sets of 10 pilates corkscrews on each side).

Snack:

005

Ummmm, I just realized when I posted the pic that it says MARCH 09?!?!?! I ate a rancid Larabar?! 🙁 And didn’t even realize it?! Oh man…….

When I left the gym, I was feeling a little discouraged and bummed out about my new shoes. I was thinking about what a pain it was going to be to send them home to the madre and ask her to exchange them for me…. On a whim, I went into Get Active and told the owner about my situation to see if there was anything they might be able to do to help me out. I just have to tell you guys how amazing the owner was about it—he said if I come home and get the box and let the shoes dry out a little (they were sweaty from my run.. beautiful haha) that they would give me a store credit for what I paid and let me exchange them for another pair. Um, I’m stoked!!!!!!!!! So I’ll be going back this afternoon to see what they recommend. Hassle averted… thank you Get Active 😀

What kind of running shoes do you use?????

SPEAKING of running shoes… check back tonight for that amazing giveaway I told ya about 😉 Get stoked, friends

Have a wonderful afternoon!!!

    TGIAF!!

Glad the vino didn't give you bad dreams. The notebook gets me every time, too. I have read so many Nicholas Sparks novels, and they never fail.

Sorry about the shoesies, but glad the owner was so nice about it! I'm in need of new running shoes, so I'm v. intrigued by the "amazing giveaway" and will be staying tuned, for sure!

    Have a lovely day!

That's a bummer about the shoes but so nice of the owner to let you exchange them!
Oh nooo that's my favorite flavor Larabar too haha too bad it was old!

  3. Heather on August 13, 2009 at 12:56 pm

Judging by how most of my health food stores do it around here, I think that's when they labelled the bar/got it in, not that it was the "sell by/eat by" date. So I think you are okay!

That is SO AWESOME about the shoes! I mean, not that they were uncomfortable, but that you are getting store credit. I have been searching for new sneakers for a few weeks now (no luck- can't find any of my beloved Asics that fit right) and I am so worried I will get some in the store that work and won't work when I test them out. What an awesome guy and an awesome store for letting you do that.

Nice leggies girly! sorry about the shoes but thank goodness for the store owners being so great!

    eek about the larabar O.O

    TGIAF!

  6. Emily on August 13, 2009 at 1:01 pm

Hey Gina! That's awesome about your luck with the shoe people. 🙂 I love Asics as well and have had stuck to them for about 5 years now. I love my new pair – they are called "Gel Cumulus 10" and flashy green. 🙂 Good luck!

  7. britt on August 13, 2009 at 1:02 pm

sux about the shoes not fitting right but it's awesome that they will let you exchange them at get active. i love when people do good business!

  8. Runeatrepeat on August 13, 2009 at 1:04 pm

I love Asics and Adidas. I usually buy which ever is cheaper though…

  9. Cate on August 13, 2009 at 1:05 pm

I love your shorts! What brand are they/where did you buy them?

    🙂

  10. Dori on August 13, 2009 at 1:21 pm

I have these Asics (GT 2140) in the white with dark blue: http://www.runningexpo.com/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=610

I absolutely love them. So comfy!

  11. Fitnessista on August 13, 2009 at 1:21 pm

cate- they're nike tempo shorts.. i have maybe 8 pairs?? they're my FAVORITE! (and 19.90 on finishline.com right now)

  12. MeganRose on August 13, 2009 at 1:23 pm

eick! Thats the worst, I got a pair of new balance shoes once that made my feet bleed. Ouchie!

  13. brandi on August 13, 2009 at 1:26 pm

that's awesome that they'll let you do that with your shoes. mine right now are adidas and I had them fitted at a running store when they analyzed how I ran, etc. They're the best shoes I've ever had.

I'm the same way with the Notebook! I've seen a million times, but still have to watch it any time I see it on tv. LOVE it all.

  14. Tay on August 13, 2009 at 1:30 pm

Check out those toned leggies! 😉

I'm sorry – that's so frustrating about your shoes 🙁 And that is one old larabar!! haha. I'm sure you're fine though 🙂

  15. seesaraheat on August 13, 2009 at 1:34 pm

    Wow, Get Active is awesome!

I'm glad you don't have to keep those shoes. I go back and forth with what I like and I almost always walk, jump and hop around the store with each pair on before I get them.

One year I was hooked on Adidas, but this past year I got Asics. No idea what I'll get next time, hehe.

  16. Veganissexy on August 13, 2009 at 1:37 pm

Good news about the shoes. That's always so refreshing when stores actually have good customer service nowadays 🙂 Glad the vino is treating you well….can't imagine giving that up!

  17. Pam (Highway to Health) on August 13, 2009 at 1:39 pm

    Nicholas Sparks is awesome!

I usually buy Mizuno's but right now I have Adidas

  18. Jessica on August 13, 2009 at 1:50 pm

I wear the Nike Air Zoom Structure Triax 11+ and I just love them!

That's so awesome of the store to replace them!

  19. Amelia (AC/DC: Highways to Health) on August 13, 2009 at 1:58 pm

Sorry to hear your shoes didn't work out, but the store/owner sounds great! It's always so nice when you realize customer service is not a thing of the past. 🙂

I really need new running shoes. I'm a fan of Mizunos because they're very light.
Also, loooove those shorts. My sister got me hooked on Nike tempo shorts a while ago and now that's all I buy.

  20. K from ksgoodeats on August 13, 2009 at 2:03 pm

The Notebook = LOVE!! It doesn't hurt that Ryan Gosling is in it either, ya know?! 😉

Oops to the Lara! Wait until you see what Clif bar I had today…you and I are living life on the edge!

  21. Meg on August 13, 2009 at 2:05 pm

I puffy heart my Mizunos. I have bought that brand for three years now and LOVE them. They are lightweight and cushy inside, the right arch support, and help stabilize my feet and legs ( I tend to roll in a bit). Plus, they are cute! Mine have awesome pink and silver details.

  22. Jessie Bea on August 13, 2009 at 2:15 pm

I ran in my beloved New Balance 1040's for as long as I could keep buying them. I really like my Brooks Switch running shoes now though.

I'm so glad they would let you exchange the sneaks! What good service.

  23. Salamander on August 13, 2009 at 2:33 pm

Gina – I just wanted to say how much I LOVE your blog and your positive attitude. I eat well (Vancouver IS a foodie town with lots of healthy options) but have been thinking about how to eat better. Being "regimented" just makes me cringe and I've been trying to think of ways to add nutrition here and there, eat a bit more veg and fruit and just be a bit more healthy. Baby steps. I also – have been looking for a gym but never really committing to one as I should (and want to!). Trying to find the right one, with the classes I enjoy taking and so forth has had me pretty bummed out to say the least.

Then – I found your blog. I find myself checking back a few times a day while at work and looking for snack ideas and flipping through older posts of yours. You've inspired me to keep more veggies at work, almond butter and hummus, rather than relying on little takeout joints around the office. You've also inspired me to once again trying 'sludges' as normally I'm *horrible* at making them. As well – I've always wanted to blog about health and food, and am thinking this would be a great time in my life to keep a blog of my progress, thoughts and changes.

So – Gina, thank you. Keep up the wonderful work, your positive attitude and for doing what YOU feel is best for your health regardless of the dirty looks and odd questions you may get from those who just don't understand.

Congrats on taking care of you.

    -Sarah

    Delurk alert:

My first running shoes were New Balance and I LOVED them! I haven't, however, found another pair of NB that I liked nearly as much. I'm currently wearing Mizuno and they are absolutely amazing – no pain whatsoever, the little tying trick keeps the heels on wonderfully, and they are super lightweight!

Good luck with your next pair!

  25. Tay on August 13, 2009 at 3:08 pm

Gina, sorry about the shoes but so happy the are exchanging them! I swear by Mizunos. They are the first sneaks I found that didn't hurt my feet.

    Excited for your giveaway 🙂

  26. catruns on August 13, 2009 at 3:53 pm

Those look extremely similar to the Asics I picked up in June, I'd have to look at mine once I get home to know for sure, but I'm not totally in love with mine either. I definitely feel like my ankles still pronate which leaves me in pain some days. They are so expensive though, so I'm going to tough it out until Christmas time and maybe alternate between these and my old ones. Blah.

  27. Lauren on August 13, 2009 at 4:04 pm

I hate it when new shoes are a bust! I am an Asics faithful too, but like to branch out…and am currently in Mizuno's Alchemy. LOVE. Much less bulky than Asics, and while they are less cushy (?) too, I haven't noticed it to be a problem at all…even on my last 10 miler. Check em out…they are super cute too!

  28. Lainie on August 13, 2009 at 4:14 pm

Don't you love it when customer service works out in your favor? That's so awesome he's going to let you exchange them! Yeah! I watched the notebook last night too….and yes…I, too, cried.

  29. sana on August 13, 2009 at 4:34 pm

Sweet deal with the shoes! I am a freak abot not eating expried food, but it will be ok 🙂

  30. Dana (www.eatsleepgetfit.com) on August 13, 2009 at 4:46 pm

I have Asics also, I have that same problem of them digging into my inner heel area. But as long as I keep them tied tight and wear the right socks I am okay. That is awesome that you can exchange them tho! Love your blog!

  31. michelle on August 13, 2009 at 4:47 pm

I second the mizunos! I used to wear asics, then nike vomero, now mizunos- I lurve muzunos!! best.shoes.ever!

  32. Holly on August 13, 2009 at 5:22 pm

Oh NO!!! That sux about your new kick! I used to be a Nike girl and a friend recommended Asics and I am IN LOVE!!!!!!!!! Glad you came across an amazing owner like that to help you out! Hope the new pair is better!

  33. Menden @ Skinny Menny on August 13, 2009 at 6:37 pm

I love Asics too! Too bad your new shoes didn't work out for you. I'll def be checking back for the giveaway 🙂

  34. fittingbackin on August 13, 2009 at 7:19 pm

I'm so sorry about the shoes but that's an AWESOME deal – good for that company for doing the nice and right thing!!! I love the Notebook… can't wait to see Time Traveler's Wife (they're kind of in the same category in my head and then with the same actress I have high expectations!)

  35. AzLinda on August 13, 2009 at 7:28 pm

That is some great customer service..yay!

I am in love with the Asics gel Nimbus 9, they are so awesome!

I love my New Balance! I'm due for another pair! I hate shoe shopping!

  37. Jocelyn on August 13, 2009 at 8:15 pm

New balance has always been my favorite running shoe brand. dad's an orthopedic surgeon and strongly recommends them! this is the first comment i've ever left so i hope that i'm doing it right!

  38. Anonymous on August 13, 2009 at 8:36 pm

I stumbled across your blog yesterday, and I'm loving it!

You and I have similar eating styles, and something about that reinforcement makes your blog like CRACK to me (I also, am obsessed with Mary's crack). I'm a vegetarian with limited egg and dairy intake. I eat them occasionally as treats– I looooove some good thin sliced parm on green apple slices.

As for shoes: Mizzuno all the way, I've never been disappointed.

I got new Asics from the Nordstrom Anniversary sale last month! They are ammmmmazing. I wrote about them here: http://cookinandlookin.wordpress.com/2009/07/26/19-and-saturday/

It's crazy how much a difference good running shoes can make!

  40. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on August 13, 2009 at 9:15 pm

It's too ironic that you did a post on running shoes. I did one on Sunday! Great minds think alike 🙂 I have long skinny feet so the only thing I can wear is Nike's b/c they are cut narrow. I have to replace my shoes like every 3 mos b/c they are trashed after that. I run about 50 miles a week so they have seen their better days by then, not to mention, all my aches and pains creep up on me with beat up shoes. However, the Nike store in San Diego was out of the beloved tempo short in anything other than ummm…white. As in white tshirt contest equivalent of shorts totally see-thru. Oh they had black and navy but nothing cute. Thanks for the Finishline.com tip! And sooo sorry your shoes werent working for you. That's great customer service. The Nike Store told me that with a receipt, worn or not, for 30 days they will take back shoes. Period. That was good to know I thought as I never knew that before this weekend's shopping trip.

Wow, thats great customer service! I'm so impressed!
That expiration date seems to show how people eat in Valdosta 🙂 Much like people in Lubbock!

  42. Ryane on August 14, 2009 at 11:04 am

    Oooh yayyy giveaway!

Hmmm, I'm definitely in need of running shorts/pants that don't show sweat (because I am a sweaty beast during/after a good workout… yuck)and I'm sure I could find lots of other fun things to use up that $100 with (always lose my socks, wtf!).

    Happy weekend!!
