Homemade cashew butter

so I can, so I can… 😉

Hi guys 😀 How are you??? It’s almost the freakin’ weekend! Thank goodness, eh? 🙂

Thanks again to those of you who hit up the Sun Warrior deal yesterday. We ran out extremely fast, so OpenSky is ordering more so we can (hopefully) run the promo again on Monday for those of you who missed it.

Last night was a lot of fun- we had an event at the gym, so I went to hang out with everyone for a while and then came back to the puppers.

I also made cashew butter at midnight….

cashew butter

(with cinnamon, sea salt and vanilla)

The cashew butter has to be my favorite homemade nut butter creation so far- it tastes like dessert to me since many raw desserts are made with soaked cashews to give them a creamy texture.

This morning, I used the cashew butter to make a protein sauce for my AM waffles 😀

 sauce

-1 T cashew butter

-3 T almond milk

Heated up for about 30 seconds, with 1/2 scoop of Sun Warrior stirred in.

Perfect waffle topper:

waffles

The waffles didn’t fill me up very well the other day due to the lack of protein, so I think this will give them a lil more staying power.

This morning, I have to run some errands and then have an afternoon massage that I’ve been looking forward to ALL WEEK 😀

Hope you have a lovely day! <3

xoxo,

Gina

Upcoming: A Reader’s Request post!

Today’s workout jam: “Unstoppable” Kat DeLuna and Lil Wayne

Something to talk about: This is kind of random, but have any of ya’ll had your dog(s) teeth cleaned at the vet? Bella and Viesa are getting theirs done tomorrow and I’m nervous because they have to be put to sleep for it.

They’re so little :/

I have a Shiba too and she just had her teeth cleaned a few months ago. She was perfectly fine and didn’t even seem drowsy after – just her goofy Shiba self!

Hey Gina, I used to work in a vet clinic and planned on being a vet tech for awhile. It is a pretty simple procedure. The doctors and vet tech’s do it so often, it’s like nothin’ for them! Try not to worry! Your puppies will be fine. It IS crazy expensive though, so I feel ya on that!! 🙂

    • Fitnessista on August 26, 2010 at 8:00 pm

that makes me feel better! 🙂

Cashew butter sounds awesome right about now. Do you think it turned out so well because the cashews are softer than some other nuts that are made into butters? I would think it would blend/process a little easier.

  5. Chelsea on August 26, 2010 at 2:32 pm

That cashew butter looks soo creamy! Did it process easier than other nuts (hehe) like peanuts and almonds? I love making my own peanut butter but I find it so hard to get it creamy and runny like I like it to be, but that cashew butter looks like the perfect consistency.

Do the opensky folks not work all the time? I had emailed them yesterday afternoon and I have not heard back yet….Have a great massage

    • Fitnessista on August 26, 2010 at 7:59 pm

they work all day.. someone should get back to ya. who did you email?

      • Dana Marie on August 27, 2010 at 5:16 pm

well it was jason first, we had some correspondence, and then I saw he had cc’d some other people and I didnt cc them on my replies, so I re-emailed it cc’ing everyone and I still haven’t heard back to my last request reply. Even if they couldn’t honor my request I thought they should at least reply. (shrug)?

        • Fitnessista on August 27, 2010 at 5:24 pm

can you forward me the email? no one will be in the office this weekend but i can make sure it gets taken care of on monday if you’d like

  7. Lauren on August 26, 2010 at 2:53 pm

Aww…no worries about the dogs! My doggie got her teeth cleaned last summer when she was 13 years old and she was totally fine! We were worried too because she is getting a little older, but she was better than new! They’ll be fine 🙂

  8. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on August 26, 2010 at 3:01 pm

omg enjoy your massage!!! nothing better! oh wait, there is, a couples massage at a bed and breakfast w/ a bottle of wine but i digress…

dogs and teeth. we used to have dogs and yes the whole teeth thing…if you dont take care of their teeth they can have serious health implications and there is a link between the plaque bacteria in teeth and heart issues/disease. Not just in dogs but in humans. Promise I am not making this sh*t up LOL. And yes, dogs do have to be put to sleep and it’s always soooo $$ to take care of our pets, isnt’ it!

Cashew butter. Mmmmm, good. I want some!

    🙂

  9. Romy on August 26, 2010 at 3:07 pm

I think you don’t have to worry about the dogs!! They’ll be fine 😉

  10. Fallon on August 26, 2010 at 3:13 pm

I must try your cashew butter! So creamy and delicious. Did you add a little oil to the mix? Usually cashew butter is very dry!

  11. Pearl Lee on August 26, 2010 at 3:19 pm

yum! cashew butter! i’ve never had it but am looking forward to try!

  12. Kathy on August 26, 2010 at 3:54 pm

My pup is getting hers cleaned in October. I was scared about her being put under too but I decided not to let my irrational fear interfere with her health and quality of life – but it’s hard!! I’m doing it October b/c in North Carolina (or maybe just my county?) October is “Clean Canine Chompers” month and they offer a 20% discount. Since it is not an emergency, I’m waiting until then. My vet office has been open for 2 years and they have done tons of cleanings; they only had one problem with the anesthesia and that dog had other health issues.

  13. Little Bookworm on August 26, 2010 at 3:55 pm

The cashew butter looks great! I made your chocolate mug cake today and it was fantastic. Thanks for the recipe. 🙂 (I thought I would let you know that for some reason your blog posts aren’t showing up on your RSS feed?)

    • Fitnessista on August 26, 2010 at 7:59 pm

      so glad you liked it!
bah. how do i fix it? it’s probably because i switched hosts

  14. Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine on August 26, 2010 at 4:13 pm

The cashew butter looks fantastic!! I’ve always thought that cashew is the “butteriest” of nut butters- its just soooo smooth!! Good luck to the puppers- it’s definitely nerve wracking whenever your pet goes to the vet, but they’ll be fine!

  15. Lauren on August 26, 2010 at 4:15 pm

    Great lookin’ c-buttah. I bet it’s super dessert-y!

  16. Mo on August 26, 2010 at 5:11 pm

I’ve never had my pupper’s teeth cleaned . . . I give him Jumbones, and every time he has his vet appt. she always says two things about him – it’s so nice not to have to talk to the owner about having an overweight pooch and my, how clean his teeth are! In fact he had to have a lipoma removed last winter, and they were going to clean his teeth while he was under – but decided he didn’t need it. Must be the Jumbones! Enjoy your massage – which reminds me, I should have one of those soon! Take care.

  17. Emily @ Emilyeatsclean on August 26, 2010 at 5:48 pm

Ohhh that cashew butter looks devine! I must try making my own!!

  18. kate on August 26, 2010 at 5:49 pm

  19. Jennie on August 26, 2010 at 6:32 pm

What kind of food processor do you use to make these? I had the mini Cuisinart 3 Cup and it’s motor got burnt out on frozen bananas. :/

    • Fitnessista on August 26, 2010 at 7:43 pm

i did it in the mini cuisinart food chopper- no probs!

      • Jennie on August 27, 2010 at 9:09 am

Okay great thanks! 🙂 Looks delicious.

  20. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on August 26, 2010 at 7:27 pm

Pancakes and waffles never have staying power for me either. Nut butters slightly help though!

  21. Christena on August 26, 2010 at 7:38 pm

We have to get our pugs put to sleep to get their teeth cleaned. Never had a problem, but we were pretty nervous the first time, too!

  22. Alycia [Fit n Fresh] on August 26, 2010 at 7:48 pm

I seriously need to start making my own nut butter – that looks delish!

  23. Heather on August 26, 2010 at 8:06 pm

I have had my dogs teeth cleaned more than once, its a simple procedure and they will be fine!!!

  24. Melissa (MelissaLikesToEat) on August 26, 2010 at 8:08 pm

Now you got that song stuck in my head! Thanks! 🙂 Your cashew butter looks so creamy!

    • Fitnessista on August 26, 2010 at 8:44 pm

      you’re welcome, haha

  25. Christina @ Food.Fun.Fabulous on August 26, 2010 at 8:22 pm

I worked at a vet’s – Don’t worry they will be fine! Small dogs are prone to dental problems so it’s good that you are having them cleaned, such a responsible dog mommy!

    • Fitnessista on August 26, 2010 at 8:44 pm

thank you, that makes me feel better!

  26. Judy (cookbook maven) on August 26, 2010 at 8:32 pm

While the dogs haven’t needed their teeth cleaned, the cats had theirs done when they were 5. Good teeth is just as important for animals as it is for us humans, but I’m always a wreck til they’re home!

  27. Holly S. on August 26, 2010 at 8:38 pm

    The nut butter looks delicious!

Any way you can start the promo a little later in the day? At night would be awesome! It is hard for us 9-5ers to log on and participate in the promo before it goes away when it is post in the morning! I can’t make the purchase at work 🙁

    • Fitnessista on August 26, 2010 at 8:43 pm

i’ll ask them- hopefully we’ll have more so we don’t run out as quickly!

  28. Mallory on August 26, 2010 at 9:42 pm

When we got our pup (a severely abused pitbull puppy) she had a lot of broken teeth she we have to get her teeth cleaned once a year to make sure that they stay healthy. Its no big deal 🙂 They’re only under for a new mins and are a little dopey afterward. That’s the part I love b/c Rox is so cuddly! I recommend not feeding them a whole lot after b/c sometimes being put under can make them queesy.

  29. Janis on August 27, 2010 at 12:12 am

just had my cockapoo at vet for first cleaning, I was worried, going under!- but needs to be done for their overall health, he did great but wasnt so hungry for the next 2 days. Now I got a toothbrush and I will maintain as best I can. 🙂

  30. Erin on August 27, 2010 at 1:58 am

My dog was put under to get his cleaned. He was really clingy for the rest of the day and the anaesthesia wearing off made him kind of goofy… he kept trying to jump to get onto the couch and he would miss and headbutt it instead.

  31. Sonia @ Master of Her Romaine on August 27, 2010 at 11:05 am

that looks soooo good! Cashews are my absolute favorite nut!
The cashew buttah reminds me of one of my fave Indian desserts- not sure if you’ve tried it- it is called Kaju Katli… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaju_Katli
They are not for the faint of heart! The recipe is simple and there are lots of recipes online… You could toootally healthify these and make them in the dehydrator.
    You rock!

    • Fitnessista on August 27, 2010 at 2:11 pm

i haven’t tried that yet- thank you so much for the recipe!!
