Laying an egg

Hey everyone! How was your day? Mine was quite wonderful even though it was lacking in Indian food. A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do…and in this case it was to bring in some dollas

This afternoon, I made some pumpkin pie in a bowl soup (Natalia Rose’s recipe) to take with me to munch after spin and Zumba.

004

Afternoon snack was a beautiful mango:

006

And before spin, I had some sprouted bread with a little almond butter and WFs strawberry jam:

007

And packed up my loot to go teach:

009

Spin and Zumba were a blasty, but I ended up not having time to eat my pumpkin pie soup before I had to train a client. Said soup sat in my car for about 4 hours total and tasted a little funky when I actually had time to munch it.

My training appointment was a lot of fun (I had funny quotes lady) and the title comes from when we were doing jackknives on the stability ball. To rest in between sets, she curled into a little ball on top of the stability ball and said she felt like she was laying an egg. She cracks me up 😀

For dinner, instead of the rancid soup, I ate what I was hankering for:

Mary’s crack and leftover Amy’s frijoles with green chiles, straight outta the plastic container because that’s how I roll

011

And an herb Sunshine burger:

012

Estoy muy contenta 😀

I was thinking about it, and had I eaten the soup, I would have consumed an entire avocado today (between the soup and this afternoon’s blended salad). I have NEVER done that. Not because I don’t like the taste of them, but because when I first started my weight loss journey, I taught myself to fear fats. All fats, healthy or the unhealthy variety.. I stayed away. I didn’t start eating peanut butter until right before I started the blog (a year and a half ago), even though I knew it was actually good for me and was nothing to be afraid of. It’s just that once you lose a significant amount of weight and feel the best you ever have, the thought of putting it back on is a scary thing. I’ve come a long way since then, especially since I go through a jar of almond butter each week, but I was happily surprised that I would have eaten a whole avocado today and without thinking twice about it. I realized this after I discovered the soup was nast, but had it been fresh, I totally would have devoured it. Just goes to show that I’m by no means perfect with my eating –I feel like I learn something new everyday- but by taking baby steps, it is possible to overcome “fear foods” and  totally change eating habits for the better.

Well I’m getting sucked into So You Think You Can Dance and then it’s jammie time up in herrrrre. See ya tomorrow, bloggies.

xoxo,

G

I don't think I could live with out nut butter and avocado! That soup looks really good, might have to try it!

  2. Angharad on August 5, 2009 at 9:53 pm

Nut butter….definitely a newish thing for me. I never even really considered it in a good OR bad way – it was just out there living its life without me. How things have changed!

Good for you to have come so far. Happy Hump Day!

That's so ironic that you bring up the avocado thing, because literally ten minutes ago I realized I had just eaten a whole avocado throughout the day…

It's still a bit weird for me, as I'm getting over a lot of my own "rules" with things, but there's nothing I can do about it now and the world didn't end 🙂

I do love me my avocados and nut butters!

  5. Mrs. LC on August 5, 2009 at 10:09 pm

    Amy's frijoles = yummmm!!!

Who are you thinking for SYTYCD? Me thinks Brandon or Jeanine. But they're all good. 🙂

  6. eredblue on August 5, 2009 at 10:10 pm

That reminds me to ask you: how do you preserve the remainder of your avocado when only eating half or a quarter at a time? During this pregnancy I have eaten an entire avocado by itself (with only my little knife to guide me) a couple of times but sometimes even between the two of us we have half an avocado left. The best I can figure is to wrap it in plastic and try to do the other half the next day but I always have to cut the 'exposed' part off cause it gets brown. I don't know how they fare in the fridge–maybe that would be better?

    I love the sunshine burgers!!!

  8. roseyrebecca on August 5, 2009 at 10:30 pm

I used to have a lot of rules for myself but now I just do what feels right for my body!

  9. MarathonVal on August 5, 2009 at 10:35 pm

Recently it is normal for me to go through 1, and maybe even 1 1/2 or 2 avocados a day!!

I, too, used to fear these. It's still a bit nerve wracking sometimes, but as I realized with Gena's help, even if I gain a couple pounds by eating more vegan and high raw (compared to previously being a vegetarian who ate too many triscuits with cheese for dinners), than it is worth it because it's better for my body!

It is definitely a hard process to reconcile this in the mind though. Congrats on having come this far!

yea i had a hard time getting over fear foods, right now im cutting out white bread, its kinda hard but i WANT to. yet i dont want to turn white breads into a fear food either, if im craving some non whole wheat pasta or bread, i want to eat it and not feel guilty, its a fine line you know?

  11. Gena (Choosing Raw) on August 5, 2009 at 10:55 pm

Ha! As you know, I routinely consume two avocados in one meal, and feel very nourished. I love that you're comfortable with healthy fats, honey, and love that you loved the blended soup!!

    Hey Gina,
    Long version:
Thank you so much for answering my body fat % Q yesterday. I really value your opinion and appreciate the time that you devote to this blog. My next question is if one is indeed trying to gain body fat, how does one do that? Because generally speaking one is looking to gain overall bulk/muscle when gaining weight and not trying to gain fat, but in my case where I am actually trying to gain body fat %, should I be (eek, the anxiety) trying to gain body fat? and if so, how? besides the obv recommendations of lots of healthy fats and calories? Also, I know that ideally I'd be seeing a health professional in person for these questions, but for various reasons that isn't presently feasible.

  14. Anonymous on August 6, 2009 at 12:28 am

    Short version:

    You are awesome.

How can I gain body fat pecrentage so that one day I may have littlies? And/or not freeze to death every waking minute? My weight in and of itself is pretty much fine, but my body fat is entirely too low. gracias

  15. wholebodylove on August 6, 2009 at 1:08 am

I only discovered your blog a few months ago. Had they not read about your history, new readers could assume easily that you have always had a rockin' body and healthy mindset. But, the fact that you have evolved into the "fitnessista" that you are today is so inspiring!

  16. Nabeela on August 6, 2009 at 3:24 am

Hi Gina, I LOVE your workouts on the other blog. If you have time, can you please post some more workouts(only if you have time and are willing, of course!). I've been doing strength training routines on my own and they never make me sore…your's on the other hand, "whoa" is all I can say 🙂

  17. Emily Eats on August 6, 2009 at 3:54 am

"the thought of putting it back on is a scary thing" – so so true. It stopped me in my tracks when I read that, as I hadn't really thought it about it that way.
I used to take PP in a B to work with me and just throw ice cubes in it. It kept it fine, but you may be dealing with hotter temps than I was 🙂

  18. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on August 6, 2009 at 3:54 am

Congrats on coming so far in your mindset about fat consumption. That's awesome and a real milestone for you, keep it up!

To the reader who only eats half at a time, I read somewhere, and it works to an extent, but if you leave the pit IN the half you aren't going to eat, rather than de-pitting it entirely, it prevents some oxidizing (browning). It's really not harmful to eat the brown, it's just visually not as pleasant. And I put the pit half in a baggie in the fridge and if I have it easily, a few drops of lemon juice. Helps slow down the process for sure.

Glad you had great classes and a good time with crazy quotes client 🙂 Those frijoles look so yummy. I have to pick Josh up from the airport after I teach tonight, so I will be dining out of a fine plastic container as well 🙂 Hope you have a good Thursday

  20. Lauren on August 6, 2009 at 7:25 am

I just to fear fats the same way but its amazing that once you discover the truth behind healthy fats and that they actually don't make you fat, so long as you consume and use them right, it's amazing the benefits they bring to your body!

My dietian once described the entire breakdown of fats to me and it always just stuck with me. She said that our bodies recognize healthy fats and break them down to use for nourishment and fuel. Unhealthy fats are things that our bodies don't recognize and won't be able to break down, so we store them into places that turn into fat eventually. Makes so much sense, right!?

So you eat that avacaod girl with pride. So good for you!

I'm sorry your soup ended up tasting funky:( That quote lady sounds too funny!

I am so proud of you for eating a whole avocado!!! I love avocados and couldn't imagine not eating them like I did before!

  24. Christina on August 6, 2009 at 9:23 am

Sorry about the soup 🙁 It looked good though!

I ate an entire avocado the other day and thought the same thing. The blog world has really helped me realize that no foods should be off limits!

  25. brandi on August 6, 2009 at 9:27 am

    laying an egg – that's funny 🙂

I ate one avocado the size of my head this week in 2 days! almost fully by myself….and we have 3 more 🙂 I was the same way though, and I'm just trying not to worry about it if it's healthy fats. I need them!

  26. Red Head, Yellow Dog on August 6, 2009 at 9:39 am

you put it so perfectly – that when you lose the weight and feel the best you have the though of putting it back on is scary!! During my "weight loss journey" and for a long time after I would never eat avocado or PB – or anything that was high in cals and fat! the thought of being uncomfrotable in my body again just scared me away from them! but now I've learned that they're necessary/delicious and one PB&J or avocado isn't going to make me suddenly blow up!

  27. Laura W on August 6, 2009 at 9:56 am

It's so interesting to me that most women have/have had some fear or another when it comes to eating. It seems like b/c these fears set in at a time when we're easily influenced (needing to be a certain size) or vulnerable (not wanting to gain weight), it's often harder to face them & realize that they're irrational.

Life is just so much better now that I appreciate balance and treating my body well!

  28. holly the healthy everythingtarian on August 6, 2009 at 10:02 am

avocado + nut butter = 2 things i cannot live without. it's amazing how far i (and of course you!) have come in knowledge. it's nice to know you can continue to learn, grow and experience new things.

LOVE SYTYCD…RIP Ade however, i wanted him to win.

  29. K from ksgoodeats on August 6, 2009 at 10:04 am

I get a weird satisfaction eating out of the container! Maybe because it's 'taboo' on the blogs – everything looks prettier when it's plated so I feel like a rebel when I don't plate something 😉

  30. Pam (Highway to Health) on August 6, 2009 at 10:12 am

Congrats on getting over your "fear foods"! It's something I'm still working on but am getting there!

That pumpkin pie in a bowl looks amazing!

  32. Annie D. on August 6, 2009 at 10:42 am

    I was the same way-

When I was on weight watchers, at the time I was told that olive oil, avocado, nuts, peanut butter, etc. were all bad… and now, I too go through a jar of AB a week! :o)

  34. britt on August 6, 2009 at 10:55 am

that's great that you were able to realize that past fear and the fact that you have overcome it! the foods i fear are the unhealthy, greasy foods that i sometimes think sound good but know always make me feel like crap. i have been giving in to them more often and i'm afraid i will gain weight and hate that i can't control eating something that makes me feel so terrible.

    have fun on your trip!!

  35. Emily (On A Fit Trip) on August 6, 2009 at 11:04 am

Avocados are definitely still a fear food for me. I have (for the most part) embraced raw nuts and seeds but for some reason I still get anxious around avocados, even though I love them!

    Have a great trip!

  36. randomlymikey on August 6, 2009 at 11:42 am

nuts and avocados two of my favorite things! the soup was so pretty, sad that it was yucky. but the replacement looks good too 🙂

I know what you mean!! I was anti-olive oil because I was so scared of the fats! Then I started adding a little bit and think it makes SUCH a difference. I'm thinking about adding avocado to my diet, too!

  38. Diana on August 6, 2009 at 3:14 pm

Totally identify with your former fear of fat. I had it too. Now I don't think twice! NEver have and never will gain weight from eating avocados. That is one of nature's greatest miracles, eh? NOM.

Speaking of nature, you WILL love In Defense of Food. I actually haven't read it yet (next on my list) but am in the middle of his other book, Omnivore's Dilemma, and it's slow-going because it's packed w/ info, but SO WORTH IT. You'll love, promise.

  39. The Globetrotter on August 6, 2009 at 5:23 pm

What a feat my dear! Avocados are the best, nothing to fear but deliciousness 😉 enjoy! (sorry to delete, spelling correction lol)

I have been seeing the thai young coconuts on your blog for quite some time. I finally saw one today and had to buy it. Now I'm not sure what to do with it! Any suggestions for a newbie?

    Good for you, Gina!
I used to have SO many fear foods too. I went through periods where I would shun meat, any kind of fat, and carbs. Now I am happy to say I've conquered most of them and am happily munching away! 😀
Life is too short to be freaked out over food, which serves to nourish and strengthen us anyway!

  43. Meredith (Pursuing Balance) on August 6, 2009 at 8:34 pm

Good to hear you're getting over some fear foods!

  44. eatingbender on August 6, 2009 at 10:02 pm

I love your reflection in this post. Even though I have never necessarily been in weight loss, I still was always of the mindset that I should fear fats of all kinds – until I started reading food blogs. What a difference a year or so makes, no?!

I hope that right now you are reading this from the comfort of Arizona! I wish I could have seen you tonight, but hopefully we can make it work on your return. Let me know when you'll be coming back and I'll make sure nothing gets in my way! Until then, have a fabulous time in AZ – I'm jealous!! :o)
