Little goes a long way

Hi 🙂 How are ya? Hope your morning is going well.

Our house smells like a nori nacho paradise, so things are good over here.

nachos

Quite a few of you were wondering how those Alexia sweet potato puffs were…

dinner

the verdict?

They were fantastic, but the chipotle fries will always be #1. The bottoms were a little charbroiled, but I like things burnt 😉

I had a hankering for a turkey burger last night, and the Pilot makes the best burgers- he adds chopped jalapeno and spices, and cooks them to perfection.

grill

Topped with mustard and goat gouda + salad and tots, it was a lovely dinner.

This morning, I added a little bit of pumpkin to my perfect protein pancakes.

pancakes

With pumpkin, a little goes a long way. Last time I tried to make pumpkin protein pancakes, I got a little overzealous and it was a giant fail.

There’s one cloud in the sky today

sky

[ok, so more than that, but it’s a gorgeous day]

so I’m going to take Bell for a walk and get to work. I feel bad because Bella is being put under tomorrow to get her teeth cleaned. She has no idea what’s coming… but last year after her dental cleaning, she looked so pathetic :/

bella

See her bald arm where they shaved for the IV last year? Makes me so sad.

I’m off- see ya later with a Family post!

xoxo

Gina

How much pumpkin did you add? I tried to add pumpkin to my pancakes over the weekend and it was also a major FAIL! 🙁

    • Fitnessista on September 27, 2011 at 12:45 pm

maybe a tablespoon and a half?

  2. Krystina (Organically Me) on September 27, 2011 at 12:47 pm

The amount of cheese on that burger makes me happy. 🙂

  3. Carrie on September 27, 2011 at 12:50 pm

Good for you on the teeth cleaning! Our family Corgi never had regular cleaning until a few years ago because her breath was so horrendous. Now every time she goes, she has to have a (rotten) tooth extracted. Poor thing is going to be a toothless wonder here soon!

  4. Katherine Miller on September 27, 2011 at 12:52 pm

    Awww Bella! Seriously so adorable!

  5. Shannon on September 27, 2011 at 12:53 pm

    Bella is so cute!!
All your eats look delicous! 🙂 Have a great day!

  6. Sara K on September 27, 2011 at 12:55 pm

Ahh I love the jalapeno addition to the turkey burgers- I’m going to try that! I usually add a little ketchup, egg, and a bunch of spices/herbs and it gives it a nice juicy flavour

  7. Julie (A Case of the Runs) on September 27, 2011 at 12:59 pm

My cat got his teeth cleaned a few months ago (we “rescued” him 1.5 years ago, so he had dental ick), and yes, it was sad to see the bald spot on his front paw, which slowly grew back in. At least he didn’t vomit.

I’ve been spraying both my dog and cat’s teeth with dental spray weekly to try to prevent the need for anymore dental cleanings, though I’m not sure it will work. I hate the idea of putting the pets under. The dog is 11 months old, so he has only been put under for neutering. When my cat got back from his dental cleaning, his eyes were big for a few days, and he we super affectionate. Not that I minded, but I knew that was outside his normal, aloof-ish behavior.

    Good luck to Bella.

My pooch is getting his teeth cleaned tomorrow, too. I’m so not excited about it.*

Awww the little shaved arm. Munchkin had that for an IV over the winter when he had to get an emergency procedure. Heartbreaking 🙁 Good luck, Bells

  10. Kelly @ Laughter, Strength, and Food on September 27, 2011 at 1:10 pm

I really need to get a grill pan!

I hate taking my pup to have things done. I always think he is thinking that I’m going to leave him somewhere for good or that he’s mad at me when I see him again!

  11. kathleen @ the daily crumb on September 27, 2011 at 1:27 pm

i’ve been a little overzealous as well with the pumpkin and the ‘cakes turn into one big mushy mess! #fail.

    • Fitnessista on September 27, 2011 at 6:10 pm

that’s exactly what happened to be last time. i still ate it, though, haha

  12. Sarah @ See Sarah Eat on September 27, 2011 at 1:27 pm

We got our dog’s teeth cleaned in February and she was quite pitiful too. But it made such a difference in her teeth and gums. We’ll have to do it again next year, even though I’m sure it will break my heart all over again, poor baby.

  13. Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat on September 27, 2011 at 1:29 pm

I could definitely do with a Pilot burger right about now… sounds delish! And I always get overzealous with the pumpkin – makes the cakes very hard to flip but they still turn out tasty (yet deformed!) Have a great afternoon Gina!

  14. Leslie Wingate on September 27, 2011 at 1:31 pm

What do you drizzle/pour on pancakes? Honey?

    • Fitnessista on September 27, 2011 at 6:09 pm

      yep or maple syrup

  15. Joelle (On A Pink Typewriter) on September 27, 2011 at 1:35 pm

    Yum, pumpkin pancakes!

My doc recently recommended I give a gluten-free diet a shot, so I’m trying to figure out how to eat some of my wheat-filled favs while sticking to this plan.. Do you have any suggestions/recommendations for GF pancake mix (or flour!), or oats?

    • Ali @ Peaches and Football on September 27, 2011 at 2:21 pm

Look for Bob’s Red Mill – there’s a line of GF products like pancake mix, steel cut oats, oat flour, etc…

Personally I use a lot of almond flour but it is much more $$$ than regular flours.

Word to the wise, if you get a “baking flour” that’s GF then it most likely has an array of flours – including garbanzo – which are NOT tasty unless cooked. So keep that in mind so if you steal some batter you don’t immediately freak out!

      • Joelle (On A Pink Typewriter) on September 27, 2011 at 3:45 pm

Great tip- thank you for letting me know! I’ll have to stop into WF and snag some Bob’s Red Mill- I think I remember seeing it there, although I had no idea that line made pancake mix!

        • Fitnessista on September 27, 2011 at 6:06 pm

that’s what i was going to suggest, too. brm will become your best friend- just don’t eat it raw, it tastes like death 🙂

  16. Sara @ RunnerWife on September 27, 2011 at 1:47 pm

Awww poor Bella! hope her “procedure” goes well – at least she will have beautifuly clean teath when it is over! Pumpkin pancakes sound delicious!

  17. Suzanne on September 27, 2011 at 1:51 pm

aw, Bells! I remember when Chubby needed to go under for teeth cleanings. Made me so nervous!
I was always on edge waiting for the call from the vet that she was ready to be picked up.
The poor thing would look so groggy.

Well, Bells will have some nice spiffy chompers tomorrow. Yay! 🙂

    • Fitnessista on September 27, 2011 at 6:09 pm

yes, she’ll be groggy, too. and will probably get sick a couple of times- poor baby
but you’re right, her teeth will be sparkly and her breath won’t be stinky anymore 😉
thinking about you and cute chubby!!!

  18. Jennie on September 27, 2011 at 1:55 pm

I have been literally looking for months for those sweet potato puffs! So jealous you found some! I love tater tots and I love sweet potatos…seems like a match made in heaven 🙂

  19. Hillary on September 27, 2011 at 1:58 pm

I love when my boyfriend makes burgers. He somehow gets the seasonings perfect every single time—and he doesn’t mind handling the raw meat (which gives me the heebie jeebies)!

  20. Anna @ On Anna's Plate on September 27, 2011 at 2:01 pm

Burgers + tots = the perfect meal. I’ve been wanting to try those Alexia tots– I’m glad they hold up!

  21. Ali @ Peaches and Football on September 27, 2011 at 2:19 pm

I dumped a bunch of pumpkin into my oats and blech, not very good. A little does go a long way.

Also tried cold overnight oats with pumpkin and I don’t care for the taste of cold pumpkin. I need it warm and cooked!

Jealous of the grilling – we probably won’t have much more time for that. It’s a pain to be out in a coat and mittens trying to grill meat (and it takes forever!). 🙂

  22. Eva @TheAmuseBouche on September 27, 2011 at 2:48 pm

So glad to hear you’re having a gawwjeus day 🙂 And looks like you’ve got some great eats to go with it. Hope Bella enjoys the weather today before the dreaded dental day (I mean, us human folk don’t generally like these either, right?)!

    • Fitnessista on September 27, 2011 at 6:07 pm

valid point.. i hate going to the dentist

  23. Mo on September 27, 2011 at 3:03 pm

I do my best to clean my pup’s teeth so I don’t have to have the vet do it – so far, they comment every time on how nice his teeth look – and he’s 14! Good luck with your Bella – try not to worry about her (I know you will). Take care.

    • Fitnessista on September 27, 2011 at 6:07 pm

thank you, friend! brushing bella’s teeth is the only thing she won’t let me do. she’s fine if i brush her hair, or get the goobies out of her eyes, but teeth: no way

  24. Ali on September 27, 2011 at 3:31 pm

If you can’t brush your dogs teeth daily( lets be honest, who does) there are different items you can try. Never do raw hides. If you are looking for a chew, go with a bully stick(I have to do odor free-yuck). They are pricey at the pet store so I use bestbullysticks.com. But the best thing I have found(my dogs get compliments on their teeth, never needed a cleaning/pull) are RMB-raw meaty bones. I am a vegetarian so it was hard at first but seeing the outcome of 2-3 a week made it worthwhile. Don’t use a weight bearing bone or cooked bones. Chicken feet, turkey necks etc would be great for a dog her size.

    • Fitnessista on September 27, 2011 at 6:08 pm

good to know- thank you for the tips! i going to ask the vet if she suggests anything, too, because i’ve tried so many times and bell won’t let me brush her teeth

  25. Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga on September 27, 2011 at 4:13 pm

Thanks for the Alexa review and I bet your house DOES smell like a big nacho. It would make me hungry just walking in there. And when you make your macarons in the dehyd, I know the smell of coconut wafting thru the air for hours is…intoxicatingly wonderful 🙂

Good tip about the pumpkin in the protein pancakes, not to go overboard…ha!

Hey there! That salad looks so colourful and yummy.. I’m trying to pick out the veggies in there haha. May I ask what’s in the mix?

    • Fitnessista on September 27, 2011 at 6:06 pm

of course! a heirloom tomato, orange bell pepper, greens, red wine vinaigrette

I love that post by Oh She Glows about oatmeal preparation–I’ve never made steal cut oats before but I plan to soon using her instructions : )

  31. Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie on September 27, 2011 at 5:24 pm

Aww my heart goes out to Bella! I’ll be thinking happy teeth-cleaning thoughts for her! Bailey, my five year old cockapoo always fully chews her food and has never had any plaque on her teeth to warrant a cleaning. Andy, my two year old cockapoo swallows his food and its resulted with plaque on his teeth. The vet gave us a toothbrush to brush his teeth every night so that he doesn’t have to undergo surgery, but if it doesn’t get better he’ll have to. I’m really nervous because he’s such a baby!

  32. Amanda on September 27, 2011 at 6:12 pm

My kitty needs her teeth cleaned too… she’s not a happy camper when we go to the vet.
