Margarita-run

The Pilot is off work today for the holiday and we were so excited to start the morning off with a family run at Sabino.

But alas, the Bob has its first flat tire.

Sad trombone.

Bob tire

Instead, the Pilot offered to stay home with Liv while I went out for a little Sabino run. It felt SO good to be out in the fresh, fall-ish air.

Sabino

Two things that I did differently this morning:

-I didn’t eat breakfast, just drank some coffee beforehand

-Didn’t listen to music, but rolled with podcasts instead

Usually music is what powers me through my runs, but lately, I’ve been getting sick of songs so quickly. If I don’t take the time to freshen up my playlist before working out, I’m better off just skipping it. I used to like podcasts for long walks with Bell while I was pregnant, but now that Liv and I walk with Bell, I leave my headphones at home. Today I listened to some Jillian Michael’s podcasts that I’ve been catching up with, and before I knew it, the 6.5 miles were over.

As far as the breakfast goes, I’ll usually have my banana with almond butter, but was still kind of full from last night’s tasting meal extravaganza at Acacia.

Tasting menu

(tropical spicy margarita = nectar of the gods)

Acacia is quickly becoming our favorite date night spot. We love the emphasis on seasonal and local produce, and their cocktail list isn’t too shabby, either 😉 For the tasting menu last night, they subbed salmon for the filet for me, and everything was fantastic.

This morning, we’re off to breakfast with nana and tata and then taking care of some chores around the house. Stay tuned for some new recipes, too!

xoxo

Gina

Happy 9 months to the little love of my life <3

Liv and bell

Head’s up: World Market friends and family 25% off (OCTFF3657) is still going today! We picked up this gorgeous thing -it looks awesome in the master!- and a fun turkey yesterday.

Turkey

Something to talk about: Do you listen to music while you run, podcasts or nada? Any fave podcasts or new songs that you love? I love How Stuff Works, Jillian Michaels, the Daily Boost and This American Life, even though I haven’t listened to the last two in quite a while.

I LOVE JM’s podcasts! I started listening to them earlier this year and have completely caught up because I would literally listen to multiple episodes a day! They are so addicting! And Janice is hilarious!

    • Fitnessista on October 8, 2012 at 1:30 pm

it’s funny because i used to not like her AT ALL. she seemed too harsh and i wasn’t a fan of her tv persona. the podcasts are entirely different- i love them. and yes, janice is awesome

      • Jaimie on October 8, 2012 at 1:40 pm

I feel the same way about JM, I have some of her DVDs and I just can’t get into them because, quite frankly, of her! I will have to give her podcasts a try : )

  3. kandi on October 8, 2012 at 1:27 pm

I used to listen to music on all my runs but a couple of months ago I began to listen to podcast for anything over 4 miles. Runner Academy is one of my favorites. Matt has an easy voice to listen to, gives amazing running advice and makes you feel like you are capable of anything. I highly reccomend it!

  4. Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie on October 8, 2012 at 1:31 pm

If I don’t have music a run just isn’t happening, I need a bass beat to get moving! So glad you had a good weekend! The best margarita I’ve ever had was an apple cider one, it was incredible!

      whooooa that sounds amazing!

How do you like the BOB?? I was thinking about getting one.

    • Fitnessista on October 8, 2012 at 1:41 pm

we LOVE the bob. liv loves riding in it, tom and i both love pushing it. it’s awesome

Oh my goodness! That is the loveliest picture of Livi and Bell. It absolutely made my day – thank you 🙂

  7. Katheryn on October 8, 2012 at 1:48 pm

Podcasts are definitely the way to go when I run. My favorites are Manic Mommies, Hamish and Andy, and Joy the Baker.

    • Fitnessista on October 8, 2012 at 1:48 pm

i’ll check those out- thank you! i love that joy the baker has a podcast

  8. Stellina @ My Yogurt Addiction on October 8, 2012 at 1:52 pm

I must listen to music when I run! I hate listening to myself breathe, and I get really bored if I forget it at home. I’ve actually never tried listening to podcasts before, but I’ve heard great things about the Jillian Michael’s ones.

  9. Michelle @ Eat Move Balance on October 8, 2012 at 1:53 pm

Margaritas are my favorite adult beverage (red wine is a close second)! Tropical spicy margarita?!? Sounds fantastic!

  10. Abby on October 8, 2012 at 1:59 pm

Such a gorgeous picture of Liv! I absolutely love that turkey as well, I have a rather odd turkey obsession and have to buy something turkey themed every year (probably because Thanksgiving is my most favorite of Holidays).
I’ve been spending a lot of time on the treadmill and instead of listening to music I’ve been streaming episodes of my favorite shows on my smart phone through Netflix, keeps the boredom away!

  11. Staci on October 8, 2012 at 2:05 pm

I usually don’t listen to anything, but I think it’s because I don’t have good earbuds…right now I just have the ones that came with my iPhone, but I heard the new earbuds apple just came out with are very comfortable. It’s weird, I have never really liked earbuds because they don’t fit right and either they hurt or just fall out while I am running, so I definitely need to find some good/comfortable ones.
I have never listened to podcasts, so I might try that.

  12. Emily on October 8, 2012 at 2:07 pm

Music helps me kind of tune out when I’m working out. When I run, it is always outside, and I forego music or anything that inhibits my hearing because I live in a pretty dangerous area and want to “keep my wits about me” as they say.

I do love a good podcast, though– if you haven’t heard Julie Klausner’s “How Was Your Week” or Glynn Washington’s NPR show “Snap Judgment”, you could check those out if you get bored and want something new. Julie Klausner is a hilarious comedian and Glynn Washington is a master of suspenseful, engaging storytelling (and he’s from Detroit, where I live, so I love him all the more). 🙂

  13. Elizabeth M. on October 8, 2012 at 2:07 pm

I love listening to audio books or podcasts while running, but since I started running with my puppy, I have been headphone free. We are still in the training phases of running, so I don’t really zone out like I used to, but once she’s better at distances I might go back to headphones. I get annoyed really easily if it’s a song I don’t like, so I had to stop listening to Pandora haha.

  14. Patti @ This Starts Tonight on October 8, 2012 at 2:08 pm

I definitely prefer to run to the sound of nature instead of my headphones (or, you know, guys honking at me if I can’t make it to the park :\ ) but I love love love Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me and listen to the podcasts on long car rides. And the host, Peter Sagal, is a 3:09 marathoner, so that’s some pretty good motivation, too!

  15. Sarabell on October 8, 2012 at 2:14 pm

I prefer music when I’m running, but I do like to listen to author podcasts while I’m on a stationary bike. One of my friends listens to audiobooks while she runs. I don’t know that I could stay motivated that way, but it’s a good idea!

  16. Stephanie @ Legally Blinde on October 8, 2012 at 2:19 pm

Happy 9-month birthday to Liv!!! I can’t believe she’s getting so big. She is absolutely gorgeous. For podcasts, I love Wait, Wait… Don’t Tell Me, Weekends on All Things Considered, and Car Talk – all on NPR. I love Jillian’s podcasts, too!

  17. JennP on October 8, 2012 at 2:20 pm

I’ll run with or without music… totally depends on my mental state. If I’m really stressed or dragging and just want to clear my head and escape, then music helps with that. If I have things I want to think over or plan out in my head, then I’ll go music-less and let my head do the work. I actually find that time goes by faster without it, because I don’t end up calculating how long I’ve been running based on how many song have played (am I the only one who does that??).

  18. Amanda Perry @ Sistas of Strength on October 8, 2012 at 2:52 pm

I listen to music when I run, but lately I have been listening to podcasts sometimes on walks. It completely makes time go by so fast, especially when I am sick of all the music I listen to!

I always workout first thing and don’t eat before. How did you like it?

  19. Julie @ Sweetly Balanced on October 8, 2012 at 3:01 pm

I just started listening to music, I used to never listen to anything when I ran!! I get what you’re saying though about getting sick of songs… I try to stick to music during long runs only so that I don’t keep hearing the same things over and over again.

I never thought of pod casts though, will definitely give those a try!

  20. Kristen on October 8, 2012 at 3:14 pm

I used to HAVE to have music to run but now that I run with my new little workout buddy in the jogging stroller, I don’t listen to anything. If I’m running on the treadmill though, that’s a whole other story. I HAVE to have something: music, tv, anything!

Can’t wait for the new recipes.

    Happy 9 months Miss Olivia!

  21. Anne on October 8, 2012 at 3:20 pm

    Awww she’s such a cutie!!!

I love listening to the Fat Burning Man when I’m on the elliptical

  22. Rhiannon on October 8, 2012 at 3:33 pm

I need to tune out as well when I run so I don’t think about gasping for air! I had someone recommend “books on tape” aka the iPod, and I’ve yet to try it but thought it’s a great idea. I need to try podcasts too!

  23. Kerry @ Totes My Oats on October 8, 2012 at 3:41 pm

Happy 9 months to Livi! She’s too cute. I need my music when I run and I’ve been doing Pandora lately so I don’t get sick of the same playlists!

  24. Gianna on October 8, 2012 at 4:20 pm

I’ve always felt that I HAVE to have music. But as I am logging more and more mileage I am realizing that it isn’t the crutch it used to be as far as needing it to motivate me. I find myself not really paying attention to what songs are on as I am focusing on my foot strike and breathing as well as the scenery. I am still too chicken to head out the door without it though! And I definitely am not brave enough to race without it yet.

  25. Jo @ LivingMintGreen on October 8, 2012 at 4:26 pm

I LOVE Jillian Michaels podcast – I listen to it when I’m out walking. Janice even tweeted me back last week – it totally made my day! 😀

  26. Sarah @ Blonde Bostonian on October 8, 2012 at 4:41 pm

Lately I’ve been running without any music at all. I find it clears my mind and allows me to become in tune with my breathing, my body, and my form.

  27. Alicia on October 8, 2012 at 4:46 pm

Happy 9th month!!! She is getting so big!

I personally can’t listen to podcasts while I am working out. I start listening more to what they are saying and I go slower. However, I have the same issue you do with my music! I just can’t find the ‘song’ to listen to or if I do find something it doesn’t last the whole way through.

  28. Leslie W on October 8, 2012 at 4:52 pm

  30. mary on October 8, 2012 at 6:10 pm

A third vote for Wait, Wait Don’t Tell me podcasts! I also like Cardio Coach guided interval workouts, which are designed for cardio machines but can be used outdoors. Cardiocoach.com.

I too can’t listen to music because it’s just too repetitive. It bores me. I walk with books on tape or Kindle set to ‘text to speech’, too.

Did you order the World Market chest online or use that code in the store? I kinda covet that chest and might have to visit the store today if the discount is good there…

    • Fitnessista on October 8, 2012 at 6:38 pm

i hope you can find it and love it! with the sale and coupon we saved 200 on it

I realized it’ll probably clash with my wild-print duvet covers. And I didn’t need to spend that much right now. But I’m looking forward to seeing yours in pics!

Hmm, maybe it’d work in my dining room…

  31. mary on October 8, 2012 at 6:15 pm

I have been on a real reading kick lately & hate to step away from my books. But, I never even thought of listening to a podcast or book while running (late to the party, I know 🙂 ). Great idea!

  33. Kevie on October 8, 2012 at 6:32 pm

    Gina,

I love JM podcasts. They help me get through long runs, too. And Janice is too funny! I need some advice, can you help me? I need advice on what to eat before a workout. The only time I have for workouts is early, early in the AM. I wake up a little before 5ish, eat a banana, then head to the gym or go out on a run. On days that I do strength training, I feel weak/tired after about half way into my second set of weight moves. I don’t consider myself a heavy duty weight lifter. I sometimes do your circuit workouts. I usually use 8 – 12lb weights. I want to do more than just one set to get stronger and more toned. I know I need to eat more before a workout, but I don’t know what. I don’t really want to wake up even earlier to digest a small snack because I don’t like working out on a full stomach. Any advice or tips? Can you link me to previous blog posts on this matter? Thanks!

that picture of Bella and Liv is so adorable!! What a happy baby!!

  35. Amanda @ .running with spoons. on October 8, 2012 at 7:42 pm

I used to never be able to get a good workout in unless I had some good music powering me through it, but since decreasing the intensity of my workouts and doing a lot more walking than running, I’ve been going iPod-less and actually enjoying the quiet. It’s great to be out on the trails and just listen to the ambiance, but I think I’m going to have to look into some podcasts to listen to when I’m walking around the city, because the sound of traffic is not so relaxing…

  36. Cher @ Weddicted on October 8, 2012 at 8:08 pm

Such a cute picture of Bella & Olivia.

I should try running with Jillian Podcasts! I wonder how motivating they would be for me!

I have to be honest, I hate all the ads now on your site. I am not one to mind the side bar advertisements, or sponsor buttons, or even sponsor posts. It is the flash banner advertisement now between your header image and post title that is awful. It seems silly to go through a massive redesign to just destroy the new look. I feel like it goes against the ethos of “The Fitnessista”… Anyway, I had to share, you are my third fave blog going “Ad Loco” in the past week.

Also, NPR podcasts are awesome to listen to when you run. I never have much time for the news, but do when I run!

  39. bri @ In Love & Words on October 8, 2012 at 9:39 pm

I am so fickle when it comes to what I listen to when I work out. I typically rotate between playlists, podcasts and audiobooks.

I love How Stuff Works also! Especially Stuff You Missed In History Class and Stuff Mom Never Told You. When I was pregnant, I was obsessed with Pregtastic.

  40. Stacy on October 8, 2012 at 10:07 pm

Most of the time when I am running on roads, I listen to music. When I trail run, it’s just me and nature. I will take my ipod and put the buds in my ears to keep the wind noise down, but rarely turn it on. When I am racing, I can listen to music until I start suffering. At that point, the music gets on my nerves and I have to really concentrate on my pace and just getting to the finish!

  41. Rochelle on October 8, 2012 at 10:53 pm

I can’t make a playlist for the life of me (part of it is laziness, part of it is being technologically illiterate) So i live for free podcasts. I run 30-40 miles per week and its always podcasts, i feel like im learning so much while im getting a great workout in.

  42. @pluvk on October 9, 2012 at 12:01 am

I have the same problem as you – I get tired of my playlist after only a few listens. I do the podcast thing, too… JM is my favorite! But I also catch up on my reality TV when I’m on the treadmill. I just download the episode and balance my ipad on the top of the machine and get going!!

  43. Bek @ Crave on October 9, 2012 at 1:02 am

I’ve never listened to a podcast before- but heard lots of american bloggers talk about them. I also don’t typically listen to music when I run, but I should try it- maybe I won’t get so bored haha!

  44. Kim @ Raising The Barre on October 9, 2012 at 8:18 am

I cannot even handle that pic of Liv and Bell. Her smile is the greatest!

  45. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on October 9, 2012 at 8:20 am

I know what you mean – I’ve been getting really sick of my workout music lately too! Even though I prefer running outside, sometimes I’ll do it at the gym just so that I can watch tv while I run. 😛

  46. Sarah on October 10, 2012 at 10:20 pm

I’m definitely a music person when I walk/run. I’ve been on exercise restriction for the last 5 weeks (gallbladder surgery and pancreatitis – it happens to healthy people too!) so all the workout songs I was getting sick of are now fresh again.

Songs I’ve been listening to over the last month-ish and plan on adding to my playlist include:

Forget and Not Slow Down – Relient K
Let It Out – Press Play
    Speed That Light – KJ-52
    Gold – Beckah Shae
Put Your Love Glasses On – Beckah Shae

One more week and I’ll be off restriction – I CAN’T WAIT.

    • Fitnessista on October 11, 2012 at 12:36 am

      awesome song suggestions!!
hope that last week flies by for you- i hope you feel awesome and refreshed for your return back to exercise
