Meg: NYC on the brain

When I graduated from high school…um…a few years ago, my big sister Ashley took me to New York City as a graduation present. It was SO much fun and I definitely fell in love with the busy streets and massive buildings. Ever since that trip, I’ve been dying to return. Well, Kyle and I will be celebrating our 1 year wedding anniversary in May (!!) and we have decided to hop on a plane to the Big Apple to celebrate! This has my mind buzzing 24/7 about the fun things we’ll be doing! Central Park, exploring neighborhoods, and we can’t forget a Broadway show. Being obsessed with fashion, I am already trying to imagine what I’ll be wearing to explore the city with my honey. Maybe I’m crazy for already thinking that far ahead, but I know it’ll sneak up on me before I know it!

There are a few essentials I’ll be saving up for to buy for the trip and there’s no place like Polyvore.com to facilitate my fashion dreams. I’ve come up with a couple of outfits that would be absolutely ideal for NYC. To explore my account, check out my page. Here you can find exact details about the items in each grid.

Firstly, a look for strolling through Central Park!

Something simple and slouchy would be perfect for a day in the sun, exploring coffee shops, and soaking up the New York Spring air. An affordable oversized cardigan from H&M would be too cute with those Franco Sarto summer sandals.

A comfortable getup will be entirely necessary for Museum day. I love the Museum of Natural History and I know K will too. We happen to be staying very close to the Guggenheim, which I am ecstatic about.

Photo2 4

You can’t go wrong with Gap denim and a comfy tee (also from Gap). How do we feel about backpacks? They seem like a perfect way to carry all the necessities for a busy day in the city!

Okay, this third outfit is what I picked out for a day of shopping around and acting like tourists. I want to feel comfy yet cute while we do cliché things like ride the elevator to the top of the Empire State Building, and take pictures in front of the Macy’s where the Thanksgiving Day parade happens. I got goose bumps just thinking about it!

Photo3 3

This Dorothy Perkins dress seems like a wonderful fit (I may have already ordered it in black) and the prices are extremely reasonable! A long statement necklace will polish this look off and I had to throw in that Kate Spade cell phone case. I feel like it was made specifically for this trip ?

Last but not least I dreamt up what I’d wear to a Broadway show. Side note: if you have seen any of the shows running right now, PLEASE comment with suggestions of what to see! We haven’t chosen yet so input would be much appreciated.

Photo4 2

This look matches without being TOO matchy. The Swedish Hasbeen clogs keep it summery. To make it a bit dramatic, I added a nice dark red Mac Lipstick (Lady Danger is the exact color).

That’s what I’ve come up with so far. If you haven’t already downloaded the Polyvore app, please do and leave your page name in the comments so I can check out your outfit creations ?

Can’t wait to be a part of the NYC hustle and bustle. If there’s anything we MUST do while we are there, please share!

Xo- Meg

Rock of Ages and Wicked were both amazing (if you like musicals!)

LIVE FOR MUSICALS. wicked is my all time fave

      • Alicia JUillet on March 12, 2014 at 6:20 pm

Wicked is the best. I saw it on tour first and then on Broadway and it’s well wroth seeing again on Broadway if you have the chance. Rock of Ages is a musical full of 80’s rock music which was also fantastic (I’ve been listening to the soundtrack on repeat since I saw it last week).

Book of Mormon is incredible. Tickets are expensive, but it is so hilarious and worth it! So is Chicago! I think Wicked is overrated, personally, but it’s cute.

I second the Book of Mormon recommendation. Love the outfits! A word to the wise from someone in the area: May can be surprisingly cold in New York! Definitely check the local weather stations closer to your trip 🙂

    • Carrie on March 13, 2014 at 12:11 pm

I was just thinking the same thing. May can be 80s and sunny or 60s and cloudy/rainy … and it can fluctuate that much in a 24-hr time span (today into tomorrow as an example). Definitely take a sweater and a blazer that would match a few of the outfits, just in case. I’ll be hoping for nice weather for you two during the trip!

Also, Wicked is my favorite for sure, but I don’t think you can go wrong with a Broadway show in NYC 😉

I just saw Kinky Boots a couple of weeks ago. I was apprehensive at first (mostly because of the name haha), but it won a lot of awards so we decided to go for it. It was seriously SO GOOD!!!! Such a fun, high energy musical! I definitely recommend!

The Book of Mormon is hilarious!! Newsies, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella the Musical, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, Matilda the Musical, The Phantom of the Opera, and Les Miserables are also amazing ones!!

Cute outfits! Great pics for strolling through NYC 🙂 I actually live in NYC, and know you’ll have a blast! I would totally recommend seeing Jersey Boys! Awesome show with fantastic music.

Once and Matilda were both incredible! Once is very singer-songwriter type music/love story and Matilda is a full blown musical, complete with incredibly talented kids which are always so fun to watch!

Just saw Pippin this past weekend and I would highly recommend it. Energetic and you can’t beat the music.

These choices are spot on! New York is one of my favorite cities. You guys are going to have a blast.

I loved the Lion King and Wicked, and I have a friend in Aladdin! 🙂

Gorgeous outfits! I saw Rent ages ago but it was amazing!

Have fun and congrats on the 1 year! Just a heads up, May is still pretty chilly in NY. Very low 70’s or high 60’s.

Cute outfits! I live near NYC and you’ll want layers as the weather is still unpredictable in May. And it’s a lot colder in the city where the sun can’t get through the buildings. You might also want more protective shoes… there’s a lot of… stuff that can seep into your shoes and get on your feet. Nasty.

I’ve lived in NYC for 4 years and the best thing to do here is explore new neighborhoods on foot. Some great walks are across the Brooklyn Bridge (don’t forget to stop for ice cream at the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory), the Hudson River Walk, through the West Village, and, of course, in Central Park. A few of my favorite restaurants are Supper, ilili, Dhaba, and Pure Thai Cookhouse. Enjoy your visit!

Rocky: The Musical is a German production which premiered here in Hamburg over a year ago. It’s making its premiere on Broadway today and I highly recommend it. I went in not knowing what to expect – I mean Rocky is American as it gets and now the Germans have made a musical of it – weird. But everything from the acting to the singing to the stage elements were impressive. The final fight scene in the boxing ring was so well done we all felt like we were experiencing the real thing.

  16. Mari on March 13, 2014 at 11:14 pm

Take a walk on the High Line .. it’s pretty during the day but even prettier in the evening. Try to go to Ilili for dinner. It is one of my top 3 favorite restaurants in the city. Amaaaazing food!! Monument Lane is a cute place in the West Village to go for brunch.

Skip Newsies it was a bore! I was BLOWN away by Matilda. Totally worth the show, and is broadway quality just like WICKED. Also ONCE is really really great.

  18. Christine on March 14, 2014 at 12:15 pm

Definitely see Wicked – so good!! Oh and like others said, the weather can be pretty unpredictable that time of year, so bring layers!

I am in love with everything!

Wicked or Jersey Boys are both incredible entertainment with the best music and storylines… they fly by so fast, though! Once had some gorgeous music but is a little less of the big Broadway style show… I’d recommend catching it off-Broadway if touring groups ever come to your area. I’m not in NYC but hoping to make it up to see If/Then at some point as I think Idina Menzel is basically an angel on earth! Have an amazing trip, love seeing your style posts. 🙂

go watch Shen Yun! it’s touring around the globe right now, so maybe you can find it in a city near you 🙂

Have a great time! I love a backpack now and then, but for NYC, I always defer to a messenger bag. I like being able to carry it in front of me in crowds and put it on my lap when on the subway.

I’ve heard amazing things about “Kinky Boots,” and I just heard on NPR the other day that there’s a show based on Tupac’s music opening in late May (http://hollerifyahearme.com/). Not sure if that’s your thing, but I always try to see shows that aren’t likely to travel. Seems more authentic to the NYC scene or something.
