Miso stuffed!

I couldn’t help myself with the title 😉

How’s your day going?? Mine has been bueno so far. I started out a little bummed because my smoking client called and canceled on me today :/ I’ve lost 2 clients in the past week! It’s hard not to take it personally, as I know other things come up, but stilllllllll….

Here’s the delicious dough from the cookies Megan and I made last night:

028

Vegan oatmeal chocolate chip (from Eat, Drink and Be Vegan)

029

I shared one with the pilot for quality control:

030

And also had some dough 😉

This morning, I overslept (yikers!) and made a lovely purple-brown sludge:

002

It had a mango, banana, some of the blueberries Jeni picked, hemp milk, Vega smoothie infusion, vanilla, cinnamon, Stevia and sea salt.

The puppies and I went on a short walk and then I hit up the post office (to mail my enrollment form for 105degrees *insert squeal of excitement* and macaroons for the birthday girl), Target for maple syrup, cleaning stuff and batteries (which somehow cost over $150… muahaha), and the health food store.

Here are the health food store goodies:

003

Larabars, Mary’s crack, NEW GUM (I’ll let you know how I like it), raw almond butter, white beans, oats and dried cherries (for cookie purposes), coconut (for macaroon purposes) and chickpea miso!

004

I really liked the ingredients and the option of getting chickpea miso in lieu of the soy-based. (They also had brown rice miso at the store! Super awesome)

005

It almost looks like nut butter:

007

I decided to utilize it in today’s lonchi and spread some onto some raw nori wrappers. I topped it with sliced carrots, bell pepper, avocado, cucumber and a little drizzle of almond butter:

010

After the roll:

012

And a salad beast with mixed greens, flax oil, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, bell pepper, lemon juice, sea salt, red pepper flakes and hemp seeds.

013

Amazing little lonchi. I LOVED the nori wrappers with the miso paste and almond butter combo—salty, nutty, crunchy, delicious.

015

You’ll never guess what I had for dessert 😉

016

I got a comment yesterday asking what some of my grocery store staples are. It’s a little different in my situation since the stores here don’t have a lot of stuff I like, so I stock up when we go to Orlando or J-ville (or when the madre and nana send care packages). So I have two basic lists for a weekly grocery trip a Valdizzy list and an out-of-town list. I keep a lot of stuff (like spices, condiments, etc on hand so that we only have to buy the fresh stuff or dinner ingredients when we go to the grocery store)

Valdosta:

– Fruit (bananas, apples, lemons, limes, avocados, pears, whatever is in season and looks delicious

-Veggies (lots of salad, bell peppers, carrots, tomatoes (grape and beefsteak), squash, eggplant, whatever’s in season that looks delicious)

-Almond butter! I eat at least a jar a week 😉

-Coconut (for macaroons)

-Ezekiel

-Goat cheese (I like the raw cheddar, gouda and jack)

-Organic eggs

-Salsa

– Beans (garbanzo, white beans, pinto)

-Medjool dates

-Raw nuts (I always have almond, cashew and walnuts on hand)

-Cereal for the pilot (Puffins!)

-Deli meat and bread for the pilot

-Dinner ingredients (I usually plan out dinners for the entire week on Sunday)

-Treats and peanut butter for the puppies

Out-of-town list:

-Dulse

-Young Thai coconuts

-Sunshine burgers

-Quorn products

-Organic meat for the pilot

-Dried fruits, nuts, oats, and nutritional yeast from the bulk bins

-Chocolate

-Wine

-Snack-type food from Whole Foods (Annie’s bunnies, Mary’s Curry Twigs, etc.)

-Raw goat cheddar

-Organic produce (as our selection is limited in V-town.. but if we have organic here, I’ll buy it up)

What are your grocery store staples????

Well I’m off to read by the pool for an hour, weights with Jeni, take yoga, teach spin, train a client and then back to the casa to make cookies with Megan 😀

Hope you all have a wonderful day!

xoxo,

G

If you talk to your Publix store or grocery manager, they can order you Annie's snack stuff, like the bunnies as well as Quorn stuff! It might be worth checking into if you have to go a while between big city visits 🙂

Your lunch looks great! Love the homemade sushi roll.

I usually hit at least two grocery stores because the one in my neighborhood doesn't have a lot of specialty items or health food and the produce is subpar.
My staples are oats, bananas, spinach, yogurt, cheese, milk, hummus, beans, green beans, ww pasta, and whatever fruits and veggies look good.

  7. britt on July 28, 2009 at 2:48 pm

that dough looks so good!! and the cookies too 🙂

  8. Gannon on July 28, 2009 at 3:12 pm

what brand do you get of raw nori? i'd love to try it but am having trouble finding some!! your rolls look soo tasty 🙂

  9. Laura W on July 28, 2009 at 3:29 pm

I don't always make a list so the cart can get a little random, but normally it all works out! I normally get spinach, apples, bananas, strawberries (or whatever fruit is in season & on sale), wraps/pitas, black beans, brown rice, marinara, frozen vegetables/fruit, soy or almond milk, greek yogurt (if on sale), 2% cheese, ricotta, egg beaters, and frozen yogurt. Occasionally, I'll pick up a new cereal, bars and/or pb/ab.

The cart gets really random when I go to Whole Foods or TJ's… I try to keep it reasonable, but I eat most meals at home so I don't feel bad about spending money on good, quality food!

Congrats on sending your 105 stuff off… that is going to be such a neat experience!

Yippee for mailing off your enrollment papers! It's something I would love to be doing, but am a little far away right now (England). I am really looking forward to hearing about your experiences and weighing up how I might get to attend a course further down the line 🙂

staples: frozen fruit, organic apples, bananas, kale, spinach, frozen veggies, fresh veggies (depending on what's in season – zucchini & squash, eggplant, tomatoes, granola bars (for the boy), nuts (for me – twss), peanut butter, beans, quinoa, ww pasta (for the boy), pasta sauce, ww bread, almond milk (for me), gallon of milk (for the boy..which he drinks in literally 3 days. cray cray), ww english muffins, dark chocolate…most of that is bought at trader joe's..such good deals there!!! we also look at sales a lot to decide on different veggies & fruit to get and if we want to buy shrimp or fish that week. So fascinating, I know.

  12. Amanda on July 28, 2009 at 3:54 pm

    Fun Post!

Weekly groc trip is usually to Trader Joes and a reg. groc store:
-tons of fruits and veggies (both fresh and frozen), hummus, feta/goat/laughing cow cheeses, wraps/bread, oats, bars, turkey deli meat, canned tuna, cous cous/rice/whole wheat pasta, almond milk, tofu, tempeh, veggie burgers, greek yogurt!

Then I make about 3 other trips during the week to restock spinach and fruits!!

  13. Ellen on July 28, 2009 at 4:03 pm

wow, a jar of almond butter a week! that must get expensive. does the pilot eat things like almond butter too? i really like seeing how you guys make it work, even with pretty different diets. i don't know anyone that eats as "healthy" as i do!

  14. Vegan Epicurean on July 28, 2009 at 4:15 pm

Since this is my first comment to your blog I wanted to let you know how much I am enjoying it. I found you about week ago and have been reading you everyday since.

We shop at a minimum of three grocery stores (Wegman's, our local healthfood store and Costco) plus the farmers market everyweek. Even though we live in a big city we still can't buy everything in one place. We also order food from Amazon Grocery. Grocery shopping shouldn't be this difficult.

  15. ttfn300 on July 28, 2009 at 4:25 pm

ooh, i've never seen chickpea miso, but that is cool!! spinach, laughing cow, goat cheese, eggs are my most-bought. in addition to whatever fruit is in season/on sale and random veggies.

  16. Ada on July 28, 2009 at 4:41 pm

Those nori rolls look absolutely incredible! I just purchased miso today because I am making miso-marinated fish for a dinner party and I'm slighty nervous but after seeing your post I'm sure it will end up delicious;)

Our grocery lists look very similar though I would have to add smoked salmon, greek yogurt, and tons of watermelon to mine:)

  17. Christina on July 28, 2009 at 4:53 pm

I hit at least 2 or 3 grocery stores, depending on the weekly deals! I'll go to 2 normal grocery stores to get the best deals (they're really close to each other) and then a natural food store like every other week since it's pretty far away.

  18. vegetarianontherun on July 28, 2009 at 5:48 pm

Haha I have my Trader Joe's list and my Harris Teeter list. Both involve Fage. My roommate says that I would have a breakdown if I had any less than 5 containers of Fage on hand….sadly it's true!

  19. K from ksgoodeats on July 28, 2009 at 6:05 pm

If I lived anywhere near you, I'd hire you to be my trainer! Those cookies look fantastic!

By the way, no new Laras were found at my WFs yet 🙁

My staples are usually: Greek yogurt, produce, apples, and wraps

  20. shelby on July 28, 2009 at 6:26 pm

I just HAVE to make some delicious sushi soon! I've never had any before =0

  22. roseyrebecca on July 28, 2009 at 8:02 pm

Some of my grocery store staples are: blueberries, bananas, soy milk, whole wheat pasta, Blue Corn Chips, Annie's Mac & Cheese and Yogi Tea!!

    I love Mary's Gone crackers!!

  23. Menden @ Skinny Menny on July 28, 2009 at 8:03 pm

Your grocery lists look a lot like mine! I hit up Trader Joe's for almond butter, almond milk, and organic produce that is a good buy. Then I buy anything else on my list at a regular grocery store!

That sushi looks delicious, by the way 🙂

  24. thedallasceliac on July 28, 2009 at 8:22 pm

My staples are fresh produce (salad stuff like greens, zucchini, bell peppers, and tomatoes as well as fresh seasonal fruit), cottage cheese, soymilk, eggs, frozen veggies, frozen berries, and cheese.

I usually order my specialty stuff online as there aren't any health food stores super close to me.

    Your cookies look AMAZING!

  25. coco on July 28, 2009 at 8:38 pm

love that nori rolls!!! sounds delicious!
my grocerie list always includes tons of produce (lettuce/spinach/kale/spring mix/tomatoes/bell peppers/mushrooms) and fruits of the season.

  26. Paige on July 28, 2009 at 8:38 pm

Those cookies look awesome, girl! Nice job 🙂 And great job with the sushi rolls, they look fab. It's also great that you mailed in your enrollment papers! woohoo!

  27. Marycela on July 28, 2009 at 9:01 pm

My favorite grocery store is H-E-B and I like to buy pretty much everything there, from greens, to bread, to chocolate, and recently they got the bulk bins… I'm in love lol

I have a question… have you tried hazelnut milk?

  28. gina (fitnessista) on July 28, 2009 at 9:14 pm

marycela- no i haven't! is it good??

  29. Krista on July 28, 2009 at 10:44 pm

Holy moly, what great looking cookies!

I've always look at the miso to buy, but never know quite what to do with it!

  30. Averie on July 29, 2009 at 3:03 am

Grocery shopping can be a fulltime adventure:
Whole Foods-6 blocks away so that's good and bad. Good for finding everything, bad for the budget.
Trader Joes-1 mile away, nut butters, seeds, raw nuts, organic produce, coffee (yes, I drink it LOL), toddler treats and snacky stuff for her.
Regular grocery store-other fruits, vegs, random items I dont wanna trek to Target for.
Local health food stores-specialty items WF doesnt have
Local Food Coop-cheap prices on bulk bin dry goods, locally grown fruits and veggies. I am in San Diego.
Basically, I could make specialty grocery runs a daily thing but I try to only go every 48-72 hrs or I feel like I live at a market LOL

  31. Cait (Cait's Plate) on July 29, 2009 at 8:23 am

Oh my gosh that hummus looks amazing and I am SO making those cookies! They look ROCKIN'! 🙂

  32. Cait (Cait's Plate) on July 29, 2009 at 8:23 am

I love MisoMaster…aren't their Miso's the best? I've tried all their flavors but I've never seen the Chickpea flavor here in NYC….I'll have to keep looking..I would love to try it…hehe…
Have a great day and enjoy the Florida sunshine!!!

    Best,

    Amie
