Monsooner or later

This year’s summer monsoons have been a dud so far. Every afternoon, the clouds creep in, looming and promise an epic rainstorm, and so far it’s only been a few sprinkles here and there. Last year’s were so amazing, I really can’t complain, but I’m excited for some real monsoon action…. especially since that means the Pilot’s flights are canceled. I never said that.

Some fun recipe testing went down today!

A glimpse of what’s to come:

Choc chunks

Cookies 4

I also made a new macaroon recipe.. and I’m actually going to post it 🙂

This afternoon, Liv and I hung out at my mom’s house with my nana and madre, and I took Bell over with us so she could see her friend Tucker:

Tucker

(he’s sooooo nice)

we also dug through old photos and found some amazing gems.

Me kissing Kyle after he was born:

Baby kyle

My nana, mom, me, and nana (great grandmother- from Spain):

The fam

I LOVE my nana’s dress, the fact that I’m sucking my tongue like Liv does, and so many warm fuzzies that come with this picture

Lunch:

Quinoa and eggs

Broccoli slaw, tahini sauce, quinoa, lentils, 2 steamed eggs

Workout-wise, I got in a KILLER Tabata workout this morning, paired with strength training. This week’s Tabata Thursday video is uploading as I type this, and dare I say, it’s the hardest one yet. I hope you love it!

Time to make some dinner.

Hope you have a great night! <3

xoxo

Gina

I could wear that now, lol! and your great nana’s shirt is so authentic. I really love it , considering shes from spain it is just really cool. anyway, cant wait to see that recipe! looks yummy!

I literally just posted that same quote picture on my site! It’s one of my favorites 🙂

  9. Stacey on July 11, 2012 at 11:08 pm

I relocated to Phoenix, AZ at the very end of March of this year. For months I’d heard about Monsoon, and my boyfriend and coworkers have been building me up for it, and then all we have are clouds. I’m originally from Nebraska, where we (typically) get plenty of rain, so for now I’m totally jealous of any sprinkles you might be getting! Every time I see those dark clouds roll in my heart gets a little bit happier 🙂

  10. Katherine @ The Fit Lady Sings on July 11, 2012 at 11:10 pm

There’s a spin instructor at my gym who’s classes are KILLER. Every time I go, I know I’m in for one intense, sweaty workout. I love them!

    • Fitnessista on July 12, 2012 at 12:38 pm

that’s so awesome you found a great spin instructor- i’ve found that they’re either AMAZING, or not so much. there’s no in between

  11. Rachel C on July 11, 2012 at 11:10 pm

I had a super sweaty workout yesterday. Since we loved SSU so much, my workout girls and I decided to try SSU 2011. We did workout 1 yesterday, which was hard enough, but the air wasn’t working in our room so we did the whole thing without air. By the end of the workout the room was 81 degrees! Talk about sweaty!! We are doing it again tomorrow with the new Tabata Thursday workout before and after. Hopefully the air will be working this time!

    • Fitnessista on July 12, 2012 at 12:38 pm

      AMAZING!

  12. Abby on July 11, 2012 at 11:10 pm

OH MY GOD. Now I HAVE to have something chocolate. When are you posting this recipe?!?
I started a second round of insanity this week and it is super super sweaty. I’m trying to figure out how to incorporate some strength training in with insanity but also feel like due to all of the squats, push ups, lunges that I am getting some strength training so basically I have no idea how to add in strength workouts. Any ideas?

    • Rachel C on July 11, 2012 at 11:15 pm

I’ve wondered the same thing. My husband wants to try Insanity, but I don’t want to give up my strength training. Is it safe to mix strength training (like SSU workouts) in with Insanity?

      • Fitnessista on July 12, 2012 at 12:37 pm

you definitely can, but it depends on the type of insanity workout you’re doing. i wouldn’t follow the insanity schedule if you do.

        • Abby on July 12, 2012 at 2:22 pm

Ok, last time I did insanity my body felt exhausted after the first 6 Weeks or so, I think I may end up doing Insanity 3-4 days a week and strength training 2 days a week. Now if only I wasn’t completely lost when it came to strength training routines
Wouldn’t you like to just come train me yourself? Colorado is lovely this time of year haha

    • Fitnessista on July 12, 2012 at 12:38 pm

it will probably be next week! i made a few recipes to post while we have company in town, so if we’re hanging out with them, i’ll have some posts to put up

  13. katie on July 11, 2012 at 11:18 pm

I am so excited for you to post your macaroon recipe-you have no idea!

  14. Karen A. on July 11, 2012 at 11:37 pm

That lunch looks so amazing! Lentils are my favorites, I never thought to mix them with quinoa. Thanks for the idea!

  15. Lena @Fit on the Rocks on July 11, 2012 at 11:48 pm

My favorite recent recipe has been for Quinoa Fried “Rice”. It’s so comforting, but still pretty good for you! I love looking through old family photos, it always gives the good fuzzies 🙂

  16. Raewyn on July 11, 2012 at 11:55 pm

Last insanely schweaty workout? SSU Week 4 workout last week – with BOTH Tabanta videos! I was sore for three days….my arms were crying the morning after, lol! Love your workouts, Gina!

    • Fitnessista on July 12, 2012 at 12:29 am

I’m in Oro Valley and we got almost 3 inches on the 4 th of July! Since then we have just been teased too….

Speaking of recipes, made your massaged kale salad today with some lacinto kale I got at Trader Joes today and it was delicious!! Don’t know why I waited so long!! 🙂

I had a super sweaty spin session yesterday that felt amazing! I literally left a puddle underneath my bike which has never happened before.
I can’t wait for the recipes!

  22. Christine @ BookishlyB on July 12, 2012 at 2:54 am

My last intense workout was yesterday- I hiked Half Dome in Yosemite- 16 miles, 4,000+ ft gain, and 12ish hours. Booyah/yawn/ouch.

  23. Amanda on July 12, 2012 at 7:10 am

The newest recipe I’ve tried was Irish Car bomb cupcakes for St. Patty’s Day. I’ve got zero time with two babies, but that was fun and our friends loved them. It also made me less intimidated about baking from scratch when it comes to cake type things.

    • Fitnessista on July 12, 2012 at 12:36 pm

i’ve had those before and they’re AMAZING

  24. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on July 12, 2012 at 7:33 am

Whatever those chocolate squares are, they look to die for!!! The last recipe I made was homemade hummus – it was my first time making it! I don’t think I can ever go back to buying the packaged kind now after discovering how easy it is to make! 😀

  25. Amber @ Busy, Bold, Blessed on July 12, 2012 at 7:37 am

Sadly I haven’t been doing much cooking lately… aside from some epic egg scrambles! I love throwing a million things in scrambled eggs.

My super sweaty workout was the 5K I did last night, I PRed!!!!

    • Fitnessista on July 12, 2012 at 12:35 pm

      whoa, congrats!!!

  26. Danielle@cleanfoodcreativefitness on July 12, 2012 at 7:42 am

Yay for another tabata video! Thank you!

I made some really tasty tempeh taco salads last week (on my blog if you’re interested). Although I love anything that involves salsa and hot sauce! 🙂

  30. Beks on July 12, 2012 at 9:38 am

Last night for dinner, we did this pasta salad with avocado, parmesan, lemon juice, bacon and fresh basil. It was fantastic. Tasted like a summer carbonara salad.

  31. Kristie on July 12, 2012 at 9:49 am

  33. Lauren T on July 12, 2012 at 10:06 am

I’ve been throwing together quinoa, veggie and bean salads with balsamic vinaigrette lately, which is new to me because I had never tried quinoa until just a couple weeks ago. Now I’m hooked!
I’m going to try your tabata thursday for the first time today! I’m half excited about it and half nervous about it because I know it’s going to kick my butt haha 🙂

    • Fitnessista on July 12, 2012 at 12:34 pm

quinoa is so versatile- i love it, too!
let me know how the tabata sesh goes!

  34. Kristen on July 12, 2012 at 10:10 am

I was on a roll for a while with my recipes. They were yummy and healthy. Lately though, not so much. My baby has had a few minor (MAJOR to me) issues and I’ve just been stressed and occupied. I have GOT to get back into my groove. I’ve already picked out a few of your recipes to get me started!
So many things about this post make me smile: the chocolate, Tucker, the chocolate, the family pics. Did I mention the chocolate?!?! Can’t wait for your recipe!

  35. Claire @ Live and Love to Eat on July 12, 2012 at 10:32 am

Can’t wait for those cookie recipes! 🙂

  36. Mary on July 12, 2012 at 11:07 am

My new favorite recipe is cinnamon raisin over night oats! I was skeptical to try overnight oats at first because I didn’t know how I would feel about eating cold oatmeal but I am totally hooked! I did a CorePower Yoga class last night and it was KILLER. Between the heat and working muscles I haven’t worked in a long time I got in a great workout 🙂

  37. Anna @ The Guiltless Life on July 12, 2012 at 11:54 am

I have a random question I hope you’ll answer 🙂 I am new to your blog, LOVE IT! Anyhow…. what are your thoughts on stevia as a sugar substitute?

      welcome to the blog 🙂
love stevia- i use a little every day

Thank you for sharing! Your Livi time makes me want another (though two boys are great birth control)! Sorry for my curiosity today…but do you weigh yourself? I can get obsessive about it, and never know how other real people feel about the scale/weight. My friends are non-scale people.

  41. Cassie on July 12, 2012 at 8:19 pm

I did make a new-to-me recipe! Your dijon chicken with sundried tomatoes for dinner last night and it was delicious! I also make the quinoa lentils salad last week and it fed me all week 🙂 Hmm..now what to try next? Macaroons, maybe?

I didn’t follow SSU exactly (because of my teaching schedule), but it totally turned me on to combo moves that work multiple muscle groups. Thanks for all your great workouts, recipes, and advice!

  42. glenda on July 13, 2012 at 12:33 am

I’m so glad I stumbled upon your site. I work in an office all day and my body is starting to feel the toll. I’m ready to get back into a good fitness routine and healthy eating. I’m really excited to see your great-nana is from Spain, my mothers family is from Asturias Spain.
My new recipe… your breakfast cookie. I love it! I used tahini with coconut milk and craisins, then I tried soy nutbutter with soy milk and raisins. Thanks for sharing tips and recipes. You look fabulous by the way.

Love the pic of you kissing Kyle. Looks like you’ve always had great hair!
