Mornings at our house {video}

It’s funny because as soon as things feel like a routine, everything changes. Even though the order of events have been about the same since the first week (eat, activity, sleep all the way- thank you, Baby Whisperer), our little morning rituals have changed and become even more fun as she’s grown. Back in the day, I looked forward to the time when I’d be able to enjoy breakfast with Liv, instead of trying to breastfeed, failing, and then feeding her a bottle while I pumped. Those days are here… and they’re awesome.

Here’s what mornings look like at our house. Lately, at least 😉

Me and liv 4

-6:30-6:45 I wake up. Sometimes Liv is awake, singing her happy pterodactyl song, and other times, she’s still snoozing.

Monitor

I lay there for a few minutes, check my phone for emails and figure out a tentative plan for the day (if it’s a day I work, I need to figure out what I need to bring with me and make sure Liv has everything she needs)

-6:45-7:00 I get out of bed, put my contacts in, brush my teeth and make the bed quickly.

Then, I go into the nursery, where Liv in standing up in her crib or seated, peering through the slats and waiting for me. I sing the “Good morning” song to her, not sounding the least bit like Judy Garland:

-We come downstairs and I start heating up her bottle (Tom or I will make it the night before so it’s ready in the fridge), change her diaper and we take Bell outside. By the time we come back in, her bottle is ready.

-Bottle time, reading time (maybe 2-3 books), then breakfast.

-Liv sit in her high chair eating puffs and bites of banana or soft fruit (peaches, plums and avocado have all worked well so far, and she sometimes has sweet potato for breakfast since it’s easy for her to pinch up), while I make coffee and eggs. Usually I’ll put on some music during this time and she’ll bounce to the music as I talk to her and she snacks. That’s the newest thing and I absolutely love it: you put music on, she dances. Even in Paradise Bakery the other night, she was bopping in her high chair to whatever midi elevator music they were playing. I like to change the music we listen to but usually in the morning, I’ll play instrumental (like Baby Mozart or Rodrigo y Gabriela).

-While my eggs cook, I heat up her oatmeal (in the fridge defrosted the night before) and we eat breakfast together. I’ll spoon her bites of oatmeal in between feeding myself, and she still eats puffs or cut up fruit bites in between oatmeal bites.

Bfast 4

-We wash off her hands and face in the sink -this morning we managed to get oatmeal in her hair- and I’ll put her in the pack n’ play by the window while I take 5-10 minutes to clean up the kitchen and/or switch out dishes.

Pack n play

-Since she’s full and happy, she’ll play really well in the pack n’ play for a little while (a huge change from when she used to hate being in there!), talking to her dollies or looking out at the birds. If it’s a work day, by this time, my nana or mom is here drinking coffee with me, and if it’s not a work day, Liv and I will play until she goes down for her first nap.

Sometimes we’ll take Bell for a morning walk:

and every morning, we have at least one solid round of peekaboo.

Here’s a snippet from today:

Notes:

-The front of her hair is wet because I just washed oatmeal out of it 😉

-I talk to Liv in a baby voice (even after I swore to myself that I wouldn’t, once she was here it was “Goo goo gaga” land with no turning back… but, you should hear how I talk to Bella, hahah)

-At the end of the video, I whistle to Liv and she sings back. My mom taught her that one- she does this amazing high-pitched noise, so it sounds like she’s trying to whistle, too

-Halloween jammies = best ever

That is the cutest video! How do you not fall in love with that face? I can’t tell if she looks more like you or your hubby, but she sure is a beauty!

You have such a soothing voice, Gina! It makes me want to take a yoga class taught by you and have you sing me lullabies at night ha. Can’t believe Oliv has gotten SO big!

I agree! Very soothing and coming voice! You would be perfect to narrate a children’s book or kid’s show!!

  11. Maddy on September 14, 2012 at 10:26 pm

Love the video! Such a cutie pie! Keep the videos coming. The interaction between you both is so sweet and your voice with her is so soothing! I have a photo of mine doing the same thing with the mesh. Livi pulls to stand so smoothly! It’s really great (and adorable) that she tries to imitate the whistle. Imitation is a milestone you don’t hear about much, but it is crucial for social and language development.

Ah! I can’t wait for Tripp to start playing fun games! He has this new thing that when he’s nursing, he’ll stop and “chat” with me for a minute and then go back to eating – as if whatever he had to say was so important it couldn’t wait haha.

    Olivia is so CUTE!!

My mom used to sing the “Good Morning” song to us! It warmed my heart big time, and brought back lots of memories to see that here 🙂 Sounds like you are an amazing and loving mother, Gina!

It’s nice seeing your morning routine with her. Gives me some ideas of how it might be when my future baby is that age!! I’m just looking forward to meeting my little one in 2 months!!!

  18. Laura on September 15, 2012 at 11:03 am

She’s so sweet! Do you have some sort of mattress in the bottom of the pack ‘n play? It looks like it has more cushion than mine….

Peek a boo never gets old! My daughter is almost 5 and she still loves it when I say “Where’s Kaitlyn?”
    and she hides…too funny!

  22. Lisa on September 15, 2012 at 2:13 pm

That video is the cutest thing ever. When I was a nanny, the kids had similar halloween pajamas. They were adorable.

  26. Rebecca on September 16, 2012 at 10:08 pm

    MY PAL SCOUT!!!

Max has one too – he loves that thing!

I find it so funny when babies smoosh their faces on that pack and play mesh.

Your daughter is adorable! I can’t wait until my son is at that more interactive stage!! Looks like so much fun 🙂

I’m trying to search on your family page because I’d like to ready older entries about sleep (and everything really) since I have a 1 month old and would like to go back and read older entries but I can’t seem to search? I used to see a page full of entries and I could back and look through older ones but now it brings up 1 entry and just has a button that says next entry. How do I find all the older entries in a list where I can pick and choose what to read?
I even tried to search “sleep” and it seems like it brought up only 1 entry. Help please!

  31. Heidi on September 19, 2012 at 8:43 pm

Beautiful!! It won’t be long before she’ll be making her getaway out of her playpen!

    • Fitnessista on September 19, 2012 at 10:40 pm

she’s trying to figure it out already haha

  32. Sarah on September 25, 2012 at 11:53 am

    I swore I wouldn’t do the baby voice either… Haha, FAIL 🙂

She is SO cute. I love the peek a boo!

  33. Stephanie on October 7, 2013 at 1:04 am

I just went back to find this post since when I first read it I was pregnant and thought wow in a year this will be me. Also I somehow always kept in mind that I have to get my son some Halloween jammies like Livs cause they’re so cute! Do you remember where you got them? I found some at Carters but I like yours better haha!
I also found it interesting to compare now, my son is about one year and one month younger than Liv, so about the same age now as she was in the video, too bad it’s private now!

Was she sleeping through the night at that age? My son still wakes up 2-3 times, so at 6:45am I’m still a total Zombie!
