Music Monday playlist

Good morning! Happy new week to ya 🙂

I think we all woke up with a case of the “smushy face” over here.

Smushy face

Sometimes when Bella wakes up, half of her face is smushed up and we’ll call her smushy face.

I slept horribly last night. I have no idea if it was the wine or the sugar that gave me wicked nightmares, but I had a glass of wine with dinner, and after dominating the innards of two pieces of apple pie, I decided to top it off with a macaron before bed. The chocolate kept me awake, and when I finally crashed out, I dreamt that something awful happened to Bella right in front of Liv and myself. I woke up from the dream with tears all over my face…

Breakfast:

Oats

(oats with apple, almond butter and Sun Warrior- I made them and put them in the fridge to cool while Liv ate and we played for a while)

It was an amazing weekend. We had dinner at my dad’s house to celebrate on Saturday night:

dinner

A gorgeous salad with peppers, tomato, celery, green onions and greens, fruit, bread, wild rice, sautéed mushrooms and broccoli, yellow chicken (my dad is the chicken master)

When we got home, the sunset after the monsoon was outta control.

Sunset 2

We went upstairs to take some pictures,

Sunset

and then came back inside and took a video of Livi, who had been sleeping- she was snoring so peacefully (and adorably).

Us

Messy post-teaching hair.

Everyone came over here for Father’s Day dinner, and it was an awesome family celebration. Mom and nana made a ton of food -I contributed the twice-baked potatoes and wedge salads- and our house still smells like bacon. The Pilot has no prob with that 😉

I’m so excited that so many of you have been following the Summer Shape Up workouts and meal ideas this year! Please keep me updated on your progress by tweeting and checking in each morning- I love to hear your feedback and how everything is going.

On Mondays, I thought it would be fun to share some music for the workouts and our current power songs. Having a baller playlist always helps me to have a better workout- especially if there’s a new song that I love.

I put together a little Spotify playlist to go with this week’s workout. The Michael Buble song is for a cool down, just because I love it 😉

Any songs you’re crazy about right now?

Be sure to check in here when you finish your week 2 workout and HIIT (15-20 min) for the day!

Week 2 photo

All of the workouts and meal plans for this year’s Shape Up can be found on the intro post (along with the calendar), and I’ll also add it to the Fitness page.

Hope you have a very happy Monday!

xoxo,

Gina

Checking in too! I agree with everyone else- the star plank was a tough one! (But tough is good, I like pushing myself even if it means I have to take a few breaks during the exercise). The entire workout was definitely a notch up from last week, my HIIT was a little slower at first because I was so tired but I got some really good sprints in near the end. Very sweaty/awesome workout 🙂 Thank you!!

Love your playlist! i’m very into Lana del Ray right now for chilling out but I’m definitely into Nicki Minaj for a good cardio sesh 🙂
Loving the puppy pic – too cute!

Oooh good songs! I will be teaching Zumba tonight–and I always do intervals (2 fast songs, 1 slower song.) Can’t wait 🙂

I just made the chickpea cakes, and I had a lot of trouble making them stay together. I ended up having to use hummus to stick them together; I think the main problem was that I thought I wouldn’t have a problem using a blender rather than a food processor since usually the magic bullet works fine for me. Whoops. Still tasty though!

Hoping to get in workout 2 later…I am just so run down and exhausted today :/ I usually hate working out after dinner but got too hungry, so hopefully I’ll be able to bang it out later on tonight.

Woooohooo! Did workout 2 twice through and 20 minutes of hiit! Uhhh…less cardio intensive? Man, I disagree! My heart was POUNDING the entire time. Next up–bedtime ab burner 🙂 thank you for such a great workout Gina!

  5. sarah on June 18, 2012 at 8:30 pm

wow! this week’s workout definitely made me sweat!

  6. Madison on June 18, 2012 at 8:52 pm

Uhh…Gina, I love you, but…I was thinking some pretty nasty thoughts towards you whilst doing those star planks!! 10 on each side…TIMES THREE?! Ieeeoooo it was crazytown! Had to ditch the weights after the first set, but was proud of myself for completing 3 rounds of week 2 circuit. It’s a tough one! Didn’t have time the HIIT on my lunchbreak, so I’m about to do it now. Then it’ll be meal prep for tomorrow, and a much-needed massage appointment! By the time bedtime ab burner is complete, I know I’ll be ready for some zzz’s tonight! You’re the best virtual trainer I’ve ever had! 😉

I think I was swearing under my breath with the star planks, but finally a challenge! lol I failed miserably on the planks, modified, then modified, then modified until finally I was just doing leg lifts and leg forwards. I had a cramp, on both sides, that told me that move was not going to happen for me! The rest of the moves, not easy, but I survived. Had to wait on HIIT, be got it in. Great workout, harder than last week. I have noticed that I am craving carbs again, like when I train for my runs. That is a hard battle to fight! Thanks for kicking my butt!

I ended up switching the cardio and circuit days. I had planned to go to the gym after work, but by the end of the day, I needed a major pep talk to get myself into the gym. I enjoyed an easy jog on the treadmill for 30 minutes, and read US during my cool down walk. After reading all of the other comments on the workout, I can’t wait to try it out tomorrow!

An amazing song from an amazing workout – Body Combat!! As an instructor, I think this is by far one of the best warm up songs…the motivation is unreal…but can be used at any time, during any workout. No easy way out of shaping up!! 🙂

    • Cassie on June 18, 2012 at 11:21 pm

Love BC 🙂 Hoping to get certified in it soon (taping my video for BodyPump certification this weekend). Les Mills music is always great- thanks for sharing!

      • Hilary Seserko on June 19, 2012 at 5:07 am

Good luck!! I love Pump too…Les Mills is so addictive!!

  11. Angela on June 18, 2012 at 10:53 pm

LOL @ Bella with smushy face. I have a shih tzu and she gets mush (sounds like push) mouth. I guess that’s what you get with fluffy dogs. Just had to share 🙂

  12. Monique on June 18, 2012 at 10:56 pm

In my house, my maltie-poos and poodle get what is called “bedface”. 🙂

  13. Erin on June 18, 2012 at 10:58 pm

i definitely packed everything but my gym shoes this morning (i think im unconsciously [….and consciously] terrified of workout 2). so i went for a “steady state” 30 min run this evening instead. i’ll just switch and do workout 2, hiit, and abs tomorrow 🙂

    Summer Shape Up Check In

Watch out Jillian Michaels – Gina is giving you a run for your money. My new goal in life is to do the star plank with no modifications.

(in all seriousness – this workout rocked. I LOVED the split squats and will be adding those to my normal routine after SSU!)

  15. Caitlin on June 18, 2012 at 11:10 pm

For the plank combo, I did it wrong because I didn’t bring the printable to the gym. I did it on my forearm. Once I got back and saw I did it wrong, I tried it the right way and it KILLED my wrists. I felt like they were going to snap! Is it okay to just do it on my forearm, or am I doing something wrong?

    • Fitnessista on June 18, 2012 at 11:14 pm

      no, forearm is totally fine!

  16. Mallory @ Teach Run Repeat on June 18, 2012 at 11:21 pm

Lighter on the cardio? Lies, all lies!!! haha I only had time for 2 rounds but I burned more calories in 2 rounds on #2 than 3 rounds of #1! Love it 🙂

    • Fitnessista on June 18, 2012 at 11:21 pm

hahah! i said that in the video and i thought “wait a second…”

  17. Kate @KateMovingForward on June 18, 2012 at 11:24 pm

Workout was awesome! I definitely had to modify the star planks–I felt like my hip was hurting–is that normal? Anyways…also today was the first day I completed the HIIT right after the workout! I didn’t think I could do it, but I just got out there and ran my @$$ off! I was riding high on endorphins and pride afterward! Thanks for putting this together!

  18. Cassie on June 18, 2012 at 11:27 pm

Checking in! I didn’t get to do Week 1 workout last week because of my Group Exercise schedule, so this was my first Shape Up workout and I LOVED IT! Only did 2 circuits and 17 mins of HIIT since I’m sore from BodyPump yesterday, but my biscuits were burning!

Can you recommend which days would be best to substitute or add BodyPump to the workouts (i.e. add to steady cardio day, substitute for workout of the week, etc)? I’m getting certified to teach it, so have to practice 2-3 times per week; I’m no stranger to 2-a-days, but want to make sure my muscles have time to recover 🙂

Thanks for the great shape up plan!

  19. Caitlin on June 19, 2012 at 12:09 am

My dog has the same face when he wakes up – we call him squish face too! 🙂

  20. Chelsa on June 19, 2012 at 7:41 am

the sunset was so pretty! You have a great view from your home.

  21. Shayna on June 19, 2012 at 7:49 am

I just did Workout #2 (did cardio yesterday) and it so hurt so good. I was dripping in sweat by the third round. Thanks for another great one!

  22. Natalie Rae on June 19, 2012 at 8:20 am

omg- the planks killed… and my tush hurts this morning…

  23. Amy on June 19, 2012 at 8:28 am

Checking in with week 2 workout! I did it after work yesterday- I had to modify a little bit (weak wrists and totally out of shape) but I’m proud of myself for finishing the circuit 3 times! I’m so sore today already…….drank tons of water yesterday and ate banana, raisins, broccoli, onion, kale, mushrooms, tomatoes, spinach, grapefruit, grapes, berries, and avocado- I think I got my produce in for the day 🙂

  24. Aly on June 19, 2012 at 9:07 am

I just completed workout number two – ouch! My butt is sore already. I had trouble with the star planks, I’m not very coordinated so that may be the issue. I’ll for sure try it sans weights next time.

Thanks for posting these workouts, they’re amazing!

  25. Rachel on June 19, 2012 at 9:25 am

Did workout #2 last night twice through. Yikes! Glad I’m not the only one who hopped on the struggle bus with the star planks.

  26. Amanda on June 19, 2012 at 10:31 am

Wow week two was challenging for sure! I really liked the variety and how sweaty I got afterwards! I think I’m in pretty good shape but this one made me feel like I just started working out. I can’t wait for the rest of this week 🙂

  27. Katie A on June 19, 2012 at 10:50 am

Did Workout 2 + 20 min HIIT on the elliptical. I could only manage 2 rounds…I was totally pooped. I am attempting to half-arse train for a half-marathon at the same time and did 10 miles on Sunday so my legs were a little shot. The bedtime ab burner was fab and I slept like a little baby after my efforts in the gym today! This morning I ran 35 minutes at a glacial speed and it felt quite good on my legs even though its HUMID as all get-out in Chicago today!

  28. Gina on June 19, 2012 at 1:55 pm

So glad I wasn’t the only one who thought the star planks were impossible! I finally got into a rhythm once I dropped a knee. I’ll definitely keep this one in the rotation to gauge improvement!

  29. Mary e on June 19, 2012 at 2:23 pm

Dropping a knee was the only way I got through the planks, plus I feel like I utilized the correct muscles by toning it down a notch. The side-to-side jumps were fun! Can’t believe I made it through 3 rounds! NO WAY could I have done that 2 weeks ago! Having a great, ass-kicking time with this! Had to save the ab-burner for today, though. I was pooped!

  30. Mary e on June 19, 2012 at 2:25 pm

Oh! Forgot to mention we were celebrating Father’s Day and our anniversary by camping on our RV when I did workout 2 yesterday. Let’s just say that RV was a-rockin’ while I was getting my sweat on!

  31. Tia on June 19, 2012 at 2:30 pm

Woohoo! I did the workout and then a 15 min interval session on the elliptical… an evening walk with the boyfriend counts as exercise too, right? =)

  32. Kat on June 19, 2012 at 4:58 pm

    Travis totally gets smushy face!

  33. Athena @ Fitness & Feta on June 20, 2012 at 9:59 am

Checking in with the Week 2 Workout!! I adapted it to teach in Circuit Training last night and we were sweaty messes for sure. That side plank combo is very challenging. Thank you, thank you!
