Nori Nachos

I could pretend that we did SO much today.

But really: we didn’t. It’s funny because we weren’t lazy at all, but still didn’t manage to get a ton of stuff done. NBD, since I got to enjoy the day with the Pilot, instead of frantically running around like I usually do on Mondays 🙂

I could also pretend that these look pretty:

nori nachos

but nope, they totally don’t. They’re going to taste amazing, though.

This morning, I had an appointment and then we gave Bella a bath.

me and bell

She was the first *person* to use our new master bathroom tub. Her opinion: it’s just like all the others. She was not a fan, and then sprinted around the house to dry off [even though we blow dried and brushed her]. The Pilot and I also had a giant water fight since we’re 5 [actually we couldn’t agree if the water for Bella’s bath was too hot –I thought it was- so I covered him in water using the bucket and it was all downhill from there].

We picked out a crib,

grabbed groceries for the next couple nights,

I caught up on emails

and then made nori nachos.

I got the idea for nori nachos from a snack I’ve been enjoying lately. You can find the nori nachos at New Life (a local health food store- the crackers are made locally) but basically it’s sheets of nori, topped with a spicy cheezy coating. The original coating is made out of sunflower seeds and almonds, but since I like the kale chip coating I use even more, I soaked some cashews

cashews

and mixed some up.

mix

The major difference:

jalapenos

jalapeños!

[By using the jarred ones, these aren’t technically raw, but if that’s importante to you, just use fresh]

I added a heaping handful of jalapenos to the mix, along with chili powder (1/2 t), garlic (1/2 t) and cayenne (because I can never get enough spicy).

Spread the mix onto 7 half sheets of nori:

nori

and placed into the dehydrator to dehydrate overnight.

nori nachos

In the morning, they’ll be ready to pack up and take with me for a portable snack 🙂

The grillmaster is hard at work making burgers over here

pilot

so I’m going to make a salad to go with dinner, along with these beauties:

sp taters

Sweet potato puffs! I was excited to see them at the commissary.

Have a great night and I’ll see ya later <3

xoxo

Gina

Are you a sea vegetable fan? Or too fishy for you?

Sweet Potatoe Puffs!! I have never seen those – MUST go look for them soon! Those Nachos look amazing!! So glad you had a good day with your hubby! Days off are great – my husband isn’t in the military but he is in medical school so every moment I get to spend with him is precious because normally he is always studying. Have a great rest of the night!

  2. Laury @ thefitnessdish on September 26, 2011 at 9:42 pm

What an amazing idea!!! I have some nori wraps and need something else to do with them aside from making sushi. I can’t do those peppers though. Once you’re nursing you may have to give it up for a bit…baby hates spicy food 😉 Oh wait…don’t have a dehydrator. 🙁 Will bookmark or pinterest if Santa brings me one this year!!

Nori nachos sounds delish! I like most seaweed and I’m currently obsessed with wasabi flavored seaweed snacks.

  4. Faith @ For the Health of It on September 26, 2011 at 9:45 pm

Mmm, that fishy taste is the best part of sea vegetables! It makes me not miss the spicy tuna rolls I used to love when I order a veggie roll.
Those alexia’s were BOGO at Publix a few weeks ago, and stupid me passed on them…I really wish I’d gotten in on the special when they weren’t $5/bag! Next time, for sure 😀

  5. Lea on September 26, 2011 at 9:51 pm

I just saw those at our commissary and haven’t tried them yet!! They are on the menu for tomorrow’s menu!! Let us know how they taste!!

  6. Kaila @healthyhelperblog! on September 26, 2011 at 9:51 pm

Everyone raves about those sweet potato puffs but I can never find them!! They sound delish though!

I like seaweed salad! It’s my favorite thing to order in Japanese/seafood places.

So those are like sweet potato tater tots!? I want them!

hi gina! i’ve been an avid reader of your blog for the past year … your posts help me get through the day at work! i know how much you love to throw dinner parties and perhaps do-it-yourself nori wrap/rolls might be a fun idea/twist to your normal and delicious offerings! it’s pretty easy and can be modified to suit anybody’s dietary restrictions – just have a bunch of unsalted nori wraps/sheets… make a grain of choice (e.g., white rice, brown rice, wheatberries, speltberries, choices are endless)… thinly slice veggies of choice (e.g., carrots, cucumbers, advocados, jalapenos, etc) … some sort of protein (e.g., shrimp, crab, or even raw sushi – tuna, salmon, etc. – and if you want to make it spicy, just mix up some mayo/veganaise with sriracha (http://www.huyfong.com/no_frames/sriracha.htm) … and of course you can’t forget the soy sauce and wasabi =) … set everything out on a plate and let people add whatever they want into their wraps/rolls!

You make the most delish food Miss G –
I’m asking Santa for a Dehydrator – Would you recommend one for me? Also – I am now a Sun Warrior!!!!!!!!! Love it!!!! Thank you so much for turning me onto it.
There is a “Greens” product that I add to it called Prairie Naturals Blueberry Greens-Force. I mix 1 scoop of the SW and 1 scoop of greens into So Delicious Unsweetened Cocomut Milk, along with blueberries, sprouted ground chia seeds, a handful of spinach, 1/4 avacado, and 1/2 frozen banana – you would LOVE it!
Bella looks beautiful – and so do you…you are glowing.
    Have a great week
    -Natasha

I have never tried any type of seaweed snack because I am a little scared..are they totally worth it!?

  12. Jen on September 26, 2011 at 10:13 pm

Sea vegetables are hit or miss with me. Sometimes I like them, sometimes I don’t. My favorite vegan restaurant makes amazing arame. I looove it. On the other hand, I’ve ordered a seaweed salad at a Japanese restaurant before, and I didn’t like it at all. I love seaweed in miso soup, though. So I guess it depends on how it’s prepared!

  13. Sara K on September 26, 2011 at 10:20 pm

I can eat nori in sushi if it’s subtle, but for the most part I find it too fishy. Definitely a unique recipe though

  14. Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie on September 26, 2011 at 10:23 pm

My puppies hate getting baths too! I think that’s a universal dog thing. That’s so cute that it turned into a water fight with you and your husband!

  15. Louise Therese on September 26, 2011 at 10:27 pm

Will you and the Pilot please adopt me? I would like to be a part of your family =D

Sweet tater puffs? I have seen Alexa’s sweet potato fries but never the puffs. Oh, I want those!

And glad you guys had a chill day of sorts and even tho you say you didnt get a lot done, just picking out a crib is HUGE! Congrats!

  19. Joelle (On A Pink Typewriter) on September 26, 2011 at 10:36 pm

Those sweet potato tots look amazing! I need to try them.. I’ve yet to give the Alexia brand a taste tasting, but they’re in the new Whole Paycheck that just opened up in my ‘hood. 🙂

  20. Ali @ Peaches and Football on September 26, 2011 at 10:41 pm

Can’t even do fish or seafood, so the idea of seaweed or green stuff really freaks me. Heck, I can’t even get my head wrapped around a green smoothie!

If it’s green, it just needs to be a raw veggie. Unless it’s peas, I’m cool with peas…

    Broccoli too

    And beans

Oh heck, forget I said anything 🙂

  21. Lindsey on September 26, 2011 at 10:42 pm

I like nori 🙂 I have used strips of it in salad with quinoa to make sushi salad – which I highly recommend, very yummy! I will have to try the nachos now too!

    • Fitnessista on September 27, 2011 at 12:01 am

love sushi salad- it’s awesome with cauliflower rice in there, too

  25. Alison on September 26, 2011 at 11:29 pm

I have to ask – what crib did you decide on? I am due just a few days before you and was researching cribs today. Haven’t picked one out yet though.

    • Fitnessista on September 27, 2011 at 12:01 am

it’s the cherry princeton crib from babies r us. we liked that the changing table is attached to the crib. let me know what you decide!

  26. Rachel @ Healthy Teacher on September 26, 2011 at 11:55 pm

I think I’m a smidge bewildered by the sea vegetable.

  27. mi-an d. on September 27, 2011 at 12:12 am

anything from the ocean i basically will eat! ok of course not sharks or dolphins…and that includes sea veggies! so easy to reconstitute them. i have some arame and i just soak them in water and they’re ready in mins and i add them in my massaged kale salad!

    • Fitnessista on September 27, 2011 at 12:21 am

i haven’t had arame in way too long- thanks for reminding me!

  28. Danielle on September 27, 2011 at 12:28 am

We blow dry my dog after baths too! She loves getting all warm, but hates the air blowing in her face. 🙂
Definitely a fan of nori and seaweed paste (not sure if that’s what it’s really called…but we use it as a mix-in on top of sticky rice). I eat nori straight out of the package when I’m craving a salty snack!

  29. Ali on September 27, 2011 at 12:56 am

I don’t think that those nori nachos look so bad! I LOVE dulse and nori! And Irish moss in raw desserts.

  30. Rachel on September 27, 2011 at 2:22 am

I just ate those puffs last week. A few days before that I had some low and slow sweet taters. The low and slow blew the puffs out of the water. Same with the Alexia sweet potato fries.

    Yay water fights!

  31. Jaclyn@thejaxoflife on September 27, 2011 at 3:31 am

I LOVE sweet potato tots; do you think it’s possible to home-make them to up the health factor even further?

  32. Sara on September 27, 2011 at 3:51 am

I LOVE sea veges. I got a bit nutto over them when the Japan earthquake happened and I developed radiation paranoia…
Now I just love the taste and add them to whatever I can..

  33. Amanda @ the beauty notebooks on September 27, 2011 at 6:05 am

  34. Yolie @ Practising Wellness on September 27, 2011 at 7:10 am

Sweet potato puffs? So cool! 😀 And those Nori rolls DO look pretty! And they look pretty awesome too 😉
Hehe…so cute about Bella…my dog Lily is hilarious when she’s had a bath, she loves being brushed and blowdried, and just sits there revelling in heaven, but just before we do that she sprints around like a crazy pup, all around the house, and rubs herself agains carpets, legs, sofas…anything at all to get dry. It makes me laugh so much, lol! 😛 Waterfight? Love it! <3 xyx

  35. Heather on September 27, 2011 at 7:26 am

What a creative idea, Gina! I can’t wait to see how the nori nachos turn out. Glad you had a nice, relaxing day with the Pilot. 🙂

That’s such a cool idea! I love seaweed, especially nori and wakame. The wakame salads they serve at Japanese restaurants are so addictive!

  37. Crystal on September 27, 2011 at 8:40 am

Yum, those look good! I’m Korean, so seaweed is pretty much a regular thing at our house. I use nori to make sushi, wakame and kombu to add to soups, and I absolutely love to eat toasted seaweed snacks. I buy them in bulk lol.

Hi, there. First time commenting here, reading for a month or so. I dig your smoothies so much that I went on purchasing Sun Warrior, out of curiosity, via amazon with an astounding price of 150 british pounds (delivery included). Yeah, I live in Europe. I’ve got both vanilla and chocolate because delivery rate was almost the same (high) for only a product or both and, being a greedy little person, I said to myself I won’t be paying that twice for whenever I’ll have to order again if I’m going to like it. Funny part is I’m not vegan, raw, not even vegetarian, I’m probably just nuts. So, (OMG, what. have. I. done), I hope I’ll like it. :)?

  40. Vanessa on September 27, 2011 at 9:17 am

Hi!! Love your blog, and I love reading about your little gluten free bun : ) I was just wondering – have you ever heard of a supplement called Lydia Pinkham? It is all natural, and supposedly helps regulate female hormones. I read that you took some supplements while trying to conceive, and was curious as to what they were. Thanks for any advice you can give!

    Your nachos look amazing! Enjoy!

brilliant idea. I do enjoy sea vegetables, not too fishy for me. I am addicted to the Tjoes wasabi seaweed… so good.

    🙂
