Not easy being green

I was better off staying far away from the computer last night. It was the kind of day where everything I touched seemed to spontaneously combust:

I had a Home Alone moment with the grocery bags (of course, one happened to contain the eggs)

I knocked Liv’s full plate of food off the table (thank goodness for my four-legged food cleaning crew)

and I made some cookies.

Cookies 1 of 1 2

They look pretty but they taste awful.

Cookies 1 of 1

I think it probably had to do with the fact that I used gluten-free flour, but other than that, I followed the recipe exactly. (Or I think I did. The way yesterday was going, I could have forgotten a crucial ingredient and have no idea.)

Dough 1 of 1

Didn’t forget the sugar since my green tea powder is unsweetened:

Tea powder 1 of 1

(and am stoked to use it for almond milk green tea lattes!)

but I’ll have them perfected by St. Patrick’s Day- such a fun and festive treat idea! I feel like St. Patty’s Day sneaks up on us every year. I’m always running around frantically trying to find/make something green. Not this year… I’ll be ready.

At least I had some brownies to wash down said sad cookies.. and some wine, for good measure.

Batter 1 of 1 2

[gotta save some batter for the cook]

A friend from work just finished and rocked out a Paleo challenge, so it’s celebration time. I used almond flour for the brownies, and have the wrapped up and ready to take in with me this morning.

At work today, I’m also teaching my first barre class, so I spent some time last night practicing and getting music together. We had our workshop about a month ago, so I know what I need to do, but I always get a little nervous before teaching a new format.

I also practiced a new Zumba dance. Our new ZIN CD came and when “Take On Me” started playing it was a done deal.

You can take the girl out of the 80s, but you can’t take the 80s out of the girl. Or something like that.

Hope you’re all having a wonderful morning <3 Thank you so much for your amazing stories and comments on my latest family post. It was a tough one to write -putting complex feelings into words is never an easy task- and I’m always so thankful for your support. Thanks for being awesome, as usual 🙂

Enjoy the rest of your day and I’ll see ya tonight with a What I Ate Wednesday post.

xoxo

I love my matcha powder, I add it to all my protein shakes. Never thought to bake with it. You could try sunwarrior ormus greens, they would add a minty component to the baked stuff. Or Chlorella liquid/powder. That tastes kinda fishy to me, tho!

Awesome – I totally wanted *that* song stuck in my head all day lol

  3. Ali @ Peaches and Football on February 20, 2013 at 10:21 am

Ahhh shucks, I hate it when new cookie recipes end up disappointing. I’ve never heard of green tea powder, is that a new thing? Do you just add it to water instead of using a tea bag?

Good luck teaching the Barre class today, I know you’ll be amazing! Oh, and Take on Me has one of the best all-time music videos. Love that song! 🙂

  4. Jennifer on February 20, 2013 at 10:32 am

You’ll get it right by then! What do you use green tea powder for/in? Love your measuring spoons!

I forgot all about those brownies! I am going to make some soon! YUM!

  5. Paige @ Your Trainer Paige on February 20, 2013 at 10:35 am

Bummer about the cookies! But following it up with brownies is always a good recovery 😉
good luck with the class today – I’m sure you’ll rock it!

OMG are you serious? I haven’t received this month’s ZIN yet!

  7. Vesna Fit Missy on February 20, 2013 at 10:38 am

Yeah the cookies do look good especially with a tall glass of milk… 🙂 too bad. 🙂

  8. Ashley @ Life and Fitness on February 20, 2013 at 10:41 am

My favorite gluten free flour is brown rice flour. It works great in all different types of recipes like muffins, cookies, etc…

  9. Sheena on February 20, 2013 at 10:43 am

Have you done a ‘Focus On’ post on barre workouts yet? If not, could you please do one sometime? I’ve been thinking of joining the barre studio in my area since I hear it provides such a killer full bod workout and would love to get your feedback on these style of workouts. 🙂

  10. Jessica on February 20, 2013 at 10:44 am

Hi Gina! I teach a barre class too, so I’d love to hear more about what you’re doing–like if your cert was by a specific group (and how you liked it) and what sort of format/moves you’ll be doing.

    THANKS!

  11. Rachel C on February 20, 2013 at 10:46 am

Wow, that was an evil “Baha” after your instructions to add cardio blasts to Workout 4. I like it. 🙂

  12. Amanda @ .running with spoons. on February 20, 2013 at 10:47 am

I’ve defintiely had those days where nothing seems to go right. Thankfully they pass and make good stories and memories 🙂 Hope today is going better for you!

  13. Marina on February 20, 2013 at 10:50 am

Gina, I’ve been dying to bake with matcha powder/make almond milk lattes with it…if you like yours, would you mind sharing the brand/where you got it? 🙂 Thanks!

  14. Sarah @ Yogi in Action on February 20, 2013 at 10:50 am

St.Patty’s Day always sneaks up on me as well! One of my friends last year was so prepared he had a green suit to wear all day! I got pinched cause my one and only green shirt wasn’t even clean.

Those cookies do look delicious! I hope you get them right (mostly so I can make them myself) 😉

  15. Lena on February 20, 2013 at 10:55 am

Glad to hear that you liked Take on Me! I’ve been thinking about using it for class, but was afraid that people would be like “uhhh… what???” You’ve convinced me to add it to the rotation!

  16. Lucie@FitSwissChick on February 20, 2013 at 11:13 am

Take on me, YES!!! Love that. But sorry your day was a bit of a disaster 🙂 – I totally know these and it won’t stop until you go to bed. Good thing that the next morning all seems good again.

  17. Natasha on February 20, 2013 at 11:14 am

Hi, have you posted the cardio drills for today’s workout? I don’t know if I have missed it. thanks

  18. Meagan on February 20, 2013 at 11:20 am

I love Barre class! I’ve only done it once and am doing it again this week- who knew 1-2 pound weights could make your arms want to fall off! I’ve actually searched for some Barre type workouts to do at home- do you have any you’ve put together that I’ve missed? If not, that’d be a great workout to make for the future- just an idea! 🙂

  19. Alycia on February 20, 2013 at 11:21 am

I had one of those days last week. Things just kept going further and further downhill! I figured with a day like that, the next day was bound to be awesome. Hope you’re finding the same, that you have a great day today! 🙂

  20. Heidi on February 20, 2013 at 11:26 am

I love that you washed down the cookies with brownies and wine! Good call! 😉

  21. Danielle on February 20, 2013 at 12:14 pm

Hope today is a better day for you! I definitely have a few of those off days myself, and doesn’t it always seem like it is just one thing after another?! The good thing is it usually doesn’t happen two days in a row 😉

  22. Jay on February 20, 2013 at 12:33 pm

Yes! I am one with 80’s music. 80’s songs are my workout playlist superstars!

  23. Emily on February 20, 2013 at 12:48 pm

Don’t ya just hate days like that? At least you can start all over today 🙂 Hope it’s better for you!

Can’t wait til those are perfected….green cookies for St. Paddy’s day!? Sign me up!

  24. Allison on February 20, 2013 at 12:49 pm

I’m doing “Take on Me” in my Zumba class tonight. Woohoo!

    • Fitnessista on February 20, 2013 at 11:13 pm

how’d it go?! it’s STILL stuck in my head!

  25. Gina on February 20, 2013 at 12:53 pm

I’m addicted to Barre! I’m going tonight and tomorrow morning…I hope that’s enough recovery time:)

  26. Anna @ Your Healthy Place on February 20, 2013 at 12:56 pm

I always forget about St Patrick’s Day too so at least you’re on top of it! Did you just qualify for Barre or have you always been able to teach it but not done so yet? I’ve been dying to take a Barre class and as far as I understand it isn’t a cardio class as such so you don’t really break a sweat, but apparently it’s still super intense so I’m a bit scared, lol!

  27. Tracy on February 20, 2013 at 1:56 pm

Have you heard that sunflower butter baked goods turn green after cooling down? Here are some examples/info:

    • Fitnessista on February 20, 2013 at 11:12 pm

it happened to me with my baked breakfast cookies! i was wondering why they were green!

  28. Kim on February 20, 2013 at 1:57 pm

Burpees and jump lunges – way to really challenge us (both those moves always get my heart pounding!) even more!!!

  29. Stefanie Parker on February 20, 2013 at 4:19 pm

HAHA I know how you feel! I spilled my barley vegatable soup ALL OVER myself, my phone, the carpet at work, the desk, my nicely dry cleaned jacket, the keyboard and my clothes yesterday at lunch! I could not do anything but laugh! I thought ONLY ME! Glad we are both clutz’s.

I teach BARRE! I teach at Dailey Method in San Jose! 🙂 You will do great! I love it!

    • Fitnessista on February 20, 2013 at 11:11 pm

      oh nooooooo!
that is awesome you teach barre! i was super nervous, but think it went well

  30. jen on February 20, 2013 at 4:25 pm

oh yes that song just wants to make you bust your moves, and I’m such an 80’s girl lol!

  31. Kate on February 20, 2013 at 4:37 pm

so random but i’m studying in spain right now and my girlfriend from school who teaches zumba is with me so we got a group of girls to do zumba in one of the classrooms at the center where we take classes. it was my first time and was such a blast, i can see how you got addicted!!

    • Fitnessista on February 20, 2013 at 11:10 pm

      SO fun!

  32. Emily on February 20, 2013 at 4:53 pm

Oh man, I could totally go for a brownie.

LOVE that song; normally I’m not an 80’s fan but that one rocks. Sold.

  33. Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie on February 20, 2013 at 6:20 pm

I’ve had those kind of days before. Hopefully tomorrow is way more amazing!

  34. Beth on February 20, 2013 at 9:35 pm

Oh my – I’m glad that I didn’t see these cardio challenges before doing the workout this morning. That 3-minute plank was enough of a killer!

  35. Lauren @ Eat Like An Elephant on February 20, 2013 at 10:14 pm

Sounds like it was just one of those days…glad you turned it around 🙂

  36. Amber @ Busy, Bold, Blessed on February 21, 2013 at 7:40 am

I LOVE that music video <3

  37. Alissa on February 21, 2013 at 9:14 am

I love that song! I wish I was in a Zumba class with it on! I would kick it hard core! I have been having those kind of days too, 3 in a row in fact. Hoping for a better today!

  38. Anna {Herbivore Triathlete} on February 21, 2013 at 1:41 pm

I love matcha, almond milk, banana and matcha smoothies are the bomb! That song? Stuck in my head now. Probably for the rest of the day too. Thanks!

    • Fitnessista on February 21, 2013 at 9:13 pm

      i’ll have to try that!!

  39. Elle on March 22, 2013 at 3:52 am

When I first saw the picture, I couldn’t even tell it’s dairy free! It looks really delicious. I love cooking with celery root, but have never tried it in a soup. I have lots of avocados at home at the moment, so I think I might try to sub out the coconut milk for some mashed up avocados.
