Notes from the week

-Maternity shirts are worth it. Not that mine were a splurge or anything like that ($14.99 from that fancy French store, pronounced “Tar Jay”), but it’s amazing how good it is to wear clothes that fit, instead of wearing a longer tank top underneath or constantly pulling down my shirt.

When I first wore the black long-sleeved shirt that I posted the other day, Tom said “Hey, I love that shirt. You should get some more like that.” I listened to the man and bought 3 more colors, a white maternity tank top to wear with blazers and cardigans, and a white belly band (I use my black one all the time).

I also have to thank maternity by lululemon, for preventing me from buying an entire new work wardrobe.

lulu belly

So stretchy, so nice.

On the same note, stripes have been retired until post birth. I wore a grey and white striped shirt last week.. and looked like a sad bumblebee.

-You guys were right about the iron. My low iron levels could have definitely been the culprit of the mind-blowing fatigue. I’ve been taking Floradix for the past 4 days, and already feel a HUGE difference. I still feel tired, but actually feel human and like I can function now, so I’ll call that a win. Bonus: the Floradix tastes lovely <—- floral, fruity and slightly sweet.

-No luck on the Halloween costume front. Last night, I said “I should be Juno! And you could be that Michael Cera guy in the short track shorts.” Tom said “That would have been slightly funny about 3 years ago, but now: probably not so much.” Womp.

-I have a weird craving for a corn dog. Maybe at Whole Foods they have a gluten-free organic chicken variety?

A.) I believe applegate farms has gluten-free corn dogs.

B.) I totally want to be pregnant around Halloween someday so I can wear a cardboard box oven around my torso (with the due date on the “clock”) and have my husband dress up like a baker–> “Bun in the oven”!

My friend, a few years ago when she was pregnant, dressed as a depressed Miss America pageant winner who had her crown taken away because she was knocked up. 🙂

      Hahaha! I love that!

Fatigue and iron are definitely related. Until I started upping my supplement to 68mg/day, I was just zombie’ing around. Now I actually wake up before my alarm again.. haha.

Juno would be hilarious! And I agree- the black shirt was very cute 🙂

I think I saw in a movie, someone was eating a corn dog with mayo as a preggo craving?

  8. Madeline (Food Fitness & Family) on October 29, 2011 at 9:34 pm

I still find dressing up as Juno hilarious and creative 🙂

  9. Morgan on October 29, 2011 at 9:44 pm

A friend was thinking about going ‘trashy pregnant’ and carrying around a beer bottle and candy cigarettes (do they still make those??). May not be for you but is definitely an easy costume!

I craved corn dogs my entire second pregnancy and can remember sending my husband many times to the base bowling alley because they were open late! LOL

  11. Ali on October 29, 2011 at 9:54 pm

I think the Juno idea is a great one! Still totally funny for sure.

  12. Gina on October 29, 2011 at 10:02 pm

A pregnant co-worker of mine once dressed up as the big red kool-aide pitcher:) It was really cute!

Love Juno! But this year’s version would be pregnant Rachel Zoe 😉 (blonde wig, here you come) So, Tom could wear anything stylish including a fedora.

Hey, Gina! You are seriously the cutest preggo ever!

You know…since eating healthy and losing my 80lb, I’ve started to like shrimp a lot. I’ve eaten it quite a lot over the past year and was pretty much in love with it. Well, I ate shrimp twice last weekend and my lips got so swollen! I looked so weird. I’m very sad that I might be developing an allergy, maybe? My friend is a PT and says it may be the red algae that is causing a ban in oyster harvesting around here. Anyway, how sad is it to find shrimp love and lose it? 🙁

Glad that Lulu saved the day for the most part the with stretchy fabrics and good for you for getting some maternity shirts. When you need em, you need em. Same with nursing bras. Do.not.skimp. You will be so happy you didn’t b/c when you need something the right one, you just do. No cuttin’ corners 🙂

    You look awesome, too, Gina!

And good deal that the Floradix is working and you’re seeing results, already. Amen!

I thought the same thing when I saw that picture of you with the black shirt. It looked amazing on you. Shirts like that don’t look THAT great on me and I’m not even pregnant. *sigh*

I can’t believe there’s only a few more weeks left until you get to meet the little one. It feels like you have only been pregnant for 3 months.

  18. Sara on October 29, 2011 at 11:27 pm

You could just wear something orange and call yourself a pumpkin :D.

    That’s totally what I’d do.

  19. Julie on October 30, 2011 at 12:08 am

Have you tried Morningstar mini corn dogs? They are seriously awesome. I am not vegetarian, but regular corn dogs creep me out a little….these corn dogs bake in the oven and come out tasting like the real thing – my husband even likes them! Might help with the cravings.

    • Emily on October 31, 2011 at 4:28 pm

I was going to recommend the same thing!! The ingredients list is a little scary (as with all processed foods) but they really are delicious!

    Lulu makes maternity?!?

    • Fitnessista on October 30, 2011 at 2:17 am

no, it’s the just only clothes i’ve been able to wear

  21. Heather on October 30, 2011 at 2:08 am

Haha my husband and I were Juno & Bleeker this year and it went over really well. Plus it’s always a bonus when you can be warm and still in costume. 😉

I couldn’t agree more about the maternity shirts. With my son, I wore shirts that I already owned and by the end it was t-shirt city and I felt like a schlub…this time I went right out to Macy’s in the maternity clearance rack and had some excellent finds–it seems like if there was only one of something left, they just put it on clearance even though it’s still the right season so hooray for me! Motherhood maternity is also good (I think it’s the same clothes they have at Macys); more expensive than the clearance rack but worth it. It makes such a difference when you’re comfortable in your clothing. I don’t know about you, but as soon as I was pregnant I couldn’t stand clothes touching me too tight–now I’m 5 mos in and it’s worse. I’ve cut elastics left and right and I figure I’ll just buy new pants when I lose the baby weight lol

  23. Jen @familyfoodfitnessandfun on October 30, 2011 at 11:02 am

You are so right about the striped maternity shirts. I have a picture of me in one when I was 8 months preggers, and I absolutely hate that picture. That shirt made me look huge. Good thing I figured that out after I had the baby :/

  24. Ashley @ the fit academic on October 30, 2011 at 11:51 am

You could go as an oven, and he could be a chef – wearing an apron with the saying “Bun Maker”

  25. Christie F on October 30, 2011 at 4:12 pm

I’m not dressing up, so I’ll totally give you my idea. Feel free to use it. Dress Tom up as a fisher man (yellow rain slicker, boots, fishing pole) and then you need to put your big belly out… and paint it like a goldfish in a bowl. Your belly button can be the fish’s open mouth! just wear a black shirt + pants, but keep your shirt hiked up.

Funny as heck. He got his big catch, and you can look super adorable and creative. All it takes is some paint!

  26. Brenda@ Baby's Here! on October 31, 2011 at 10:33 am

Full panel maternity pants are worth it too- there’s no way around them the last month. They are so much more comfortable than the Bella band with non maternity pants or even low rise maternity pant!

    Milkman and 1950’s housewife.

I LOVED that black shirt- it was so flattering on you. 🙂
