Painin’ Leggies

Hi guys! Happy Monday to ya 🙂

In case you missed any of the Disney Princess Shenanigans this weekend, here are the posts:

PickyPicky

I’ve Gotta Run

Like Royalty

It was quite a blasty 😀

Even though I snacked a bit yesterday, I didn’t feel that hungry… that is, until last night. I was a ravenous beast!

So I made a bowl of mung bean pasta with veggies, Earth Balance, garlic and nutritional yeast:

pasta

Then went with the pilot to pick up Viesa at the kennel and came home to watch the Oscars. I had two unpictured bowls of delicious spelt cereal with almond milk and chia seeds- a perfect carby delight 🙂

We watched the Oscars until I passed out (we had been awake since 4am for the race) and SLEPT IN. Sooooooo nice.

I awoke to a beautiful raw breakfast cookie:

bfast cookie

-1/3 C oat groats (processed in the food processor)

-Goji berries, chia seeds, maca, and cacao nibs

-Almond milk (I used carton instead of fresh, which isn’t technically raw)

-1/2 banana

-1/2 Scoop Vanilla Sun Warrior

-1 T almond butter

-Foodgasms

Usually, I make the bfast cookies very thin on the plate, but this morning’s was thicker and more cookie-like.

Amazin’

So in an almond-shell, my legs are KILLIN me. Not in an injured way, but in a my-body-needs-oil way.

I’m feeling a little like this guy:

tin-man-by-virginmedia  (Source)

My oil of choice for the next couple of days is going to be chia seeds. Chia seeds more than double their size when placed in liquid, because they absorb moisture. It’s the same thing that they do in your body- assist in maintaining moisture, lubricate joints and eyes, and also help to build and regenerate healthy body tissue. The fact that they’re high in healthy fat, protein and calcium is just the icing on the cake 😀

Any other tips on how I can get my leggies back to normal??? I’ve been foam rolling, rubbing Biofreeze on them, stretching, but I still have to crawl up the stairs and hold onto both rails to get down.

It’s hard to believe that the day after the half marathon last year, I was wearing HEELS to welcome this guy home 😉

026[4]

The things you do for love 😉

Well I’m off to write some guest posts, clean the casa, walk the puppers and FINALLY catch up on emails. I’m so sorry if you’ve written to me and I haven’t gotten back to you yet. I will dominate my inbox today 😀

xoxo,

Gina

    Hey fitnessista,
the gal from Germany again…:-) Everytime I see one of your bfast cookies, I immediately want one. I’m so looking forward to your video on “How to make the perfect breakfast cookie”.

All the best for you and your legs!

    • Fitnessista on March 8, 2010 at 9:34 am

      thanks girl!
that video will be up this week 🙂

That picture is so sweet!!! I can’t imagine having the person you love halfway around the world..
And I also cant wait for the breakfast cookie video!

  3. Jessica @ How Sweet on March 8, 2010 at 9:41 am

I love that pic of you guys! 🙂 Hope your legs start feeling better – the foam rollin’ hurts so good!

  4. Jennie {in Wonderland} on March 8, 2010 at 9:50 am

I love that picture! I can’t wait until my brother comes home from Afghanistan and he and his wife will have their own reunion <3

I always inhale chia seeds and flaxseeds when my joints are sore. I'd imagine Green Monsters would help too… I find they are the most refreshing drinks ever after a long workout. I like rice milk, ice, xanthan gum, lots of spinach and cashew butter. Delish!

  5. Steph on March 8, 2010 at 9:59 am

I kinda want that picture of you and the pilot framed in my room!

  6. Abbey on March 8, 2010 at 10:01 am

Awww, that is the sweetest picture of you & the pilot EVER! so cute. congrats on the race!! 😀

  7. Karyn on March 8, 2010 at 10:03 am

ummm that is one of the most beautiful pictures ever!

and i totally get ravenous the night of a long run or race. it’s like the running kills my appetite for a few hours then “holy cow i could eat a cow” haha

  8. Keri on March 8, 2010 at 10:06 am

Have you ever tried Magnesium supplements for recovery? They have helped me a lot. I take one with calcium so it gets fully absorbed. I have tried to do research on them but I haven’t found anything too reliable except my own experience.

Congrats (again) on an awesome race!

  9. RHODEYGIRL on March 8, 2010 at 10:10 am

The photo of you and the pilot is incredible. He looks SO SO SO happy and peaceful. I love it!!!!!

  10. Carolyn on March 8, 2010 at 10:10 am

    Hope you recover soon!!

  11. Britt @ Runnerbelle on March 8, 2010 at 10:16 am

Definitely just keep walking and not sitting for too long. I have a desk job and the Monday after a race I try to get up ever 20-30 minutes to at least stretch and go for a short walk. I think the best my legs ever felt was after the Goofy Challenge because I went to the parks each day after racing. Not sitting around really helped.

  12. Lauren @ Eater not a runner on March 8, 2010 at 10:18 am

    That picture is so precious!

Definitely chia, flax seeds and your usual healthy eats will have you feeling great in no time 😉

  13. Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine on March 8, 2010 at 10:21 am

Aww, I love that you wore heels to welcome the pilot home last year! So sweet 🙂 Hope the leggies feel better soon!

  14. Kristina @ MendonPondMusings on March 8, 2010 at 10:29 am

An easy yoga class is always great to get the blood moving in your legs!

  15. Heather (Heather's Dish) on March 8, 2010 at 10:46 am

i’m such a baby, but i totally just teared up at that picture of you and the pilot hugging! he face says it all 🙂 congrats again on the half! you did great 🙂

  16. Mary on March 8, 2010 at 10:48 am

Is it delayed onset muscle soreness or joint pain? If the former, some pain reliever, a massage, something like Icy Hot or Ben Gay, and light motion might help. And time. Joint pain, I’d ask someone more qualified than me!

    Congratulations for finishing.

  17. Amanda on March 8, 2010 at 10:50 am

Congrats on a great race!! I would give myself a few days off from anything strenuous and just walk the dogs and do some light yoga. You could always take some ibuprofen to reduce pain/swelling, and just use it as an excuse to put your feet up and relax 🙂

  18. Mo@MommyRD on March 8, 2010 at 10:50 am

I’ve been using an arnica gel that is supposed to help inflammation, soreness, and bruising. I got it at the health food store. Of course, that’s in combo with lots of omega 3’s and protein/carbs to help in recovery of the depleted muscles.

  19. Astrid on March 8, 2010 at 11:04 am

Hooray! I am excited for the intermediate plan! I am definately ready for it. I am sorry you are sore, but you must feel absolutely amazing!

  20. Paige (Running Around Normal) on March 8, 2010 at 11:06 am

I had a delicious breakfast cookie this morning! Goji berries sound like such a lovely subsitution for raisins, though.
LOVE that picture of you and your pilot. That’s awesome you got pictures of you two reuniting 😀

  21. Shelly on March 8, 2010 at 11:09 am

Honestly, for me, it just takes time. After my half marathon in Nov. it took me 4 days for my legs to stop hurting. I didn’t mind though because I’d been training around a 10 min./mile pace and I cranked out an average 9:11 pace during my half (Not intentionally, I just race faster than I train because I am happy and excited). So my legs were understandably shocked!
My friend just finished a marathon and she said swimming the day after helped loosen her legs up a lot.

  22. Tyler Ramey on March 8, 2010 at 11:13 am

Just bought Chia Seeds and tried them today. Fantabulous soaked in Almond Milk overnight, and then added to oats. I want you know that each and every time I hit up the Earth Feezy, I think “what Gina-Foods do I need to try” Hence my new obsession with MILLET bread. *drool*

  23. Amy on March 8, 2010 at 11:24 am

try a bath with epsom salts….amazing!

    • LisaG on March 8, 2010 at 12:47 pm

Your right about the epsom salts; it works for me every time.

  24. Morgan @ Healthy Happy Place on March 8, 2010 at 11:27 am

I Love that pic of you and your hubby! so sweet!!

I usually take a warm bath and put tiger balm on sore muscles. It always works for me!

  25. Allie on March 8, 2010 at 11:35 am

i just love that picture of you and the pilot. he looks so incredibly happy, definitely worth a thousand words.

  26. caroline on March 8, 2010 at 11:39 am

Treat yourself to an nice warm Epsom salt bath – i’m guilty and use the entire bag for a sport soak! 🙂 GREAT JOB on your half! woo!

  27. Gina on March 8, 2010 at 12:02 pm

I finally bought some chia seeds (holy expensive!)and I am excited to try them out! I had two intense days of power yoga over the weekend and my thighs and hips could use some chia love:)

  28. Jo on March 8, 2010 at 12:19 pm

Hi Gina, that pic of you and the pilot is just beautiful 🙂

I swear by bio-freeze for DOMS, it’s a real god send. Apart from that, active recovery works for me. A walk and some gentle stretching, followed by a warm soak in the tub and more stretching.

I’m dying to try chia seeds, I think I will order some when payday arrives 😀

  29. Anna on March 8, 2010 at 12:20 pm

Awww!!! Such a sweet picture! Isn’t it funny how it takes the hunger a while to hit you?

  30. Katie on March 8, 2010 at 12:26 pm

I’ve tried a couple of variations on your breakfast cookies and I was wondering about the raw one using oat groats…how exactly are you processing them (i.e. how much to grind them)…mine ended up a bit on the chewy side which i don’t love quite as much as the original. As for the standard oat recipe — i’ve been portioning it out into muffin tins to make multiple smaller cookies instead of the whole plate cookie method…they’re so cute! Anyway, thanks for the wonderful recipe and I hope your legs feel 100% soon! 🙂

  31. Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman on March 8, 2010 at 12:29 pm

I need to try chia seeds. My knees are killing, so I could use the extra lubrication where my cartilage has failed me. When I’m particularly sore, I heat with a cheapo heating pad I got from CVS. It makes a huge difference.

  32. kalli@fitandfortysomething on March 8, 2010 at 12:45 pm

    Great job yesterday!
I find that doing inversions like headstands and shoulder stands help my legs.
I should do some becasue my legs are killing me from my 5K yesterday too!

  33. Theressa on March 8, 2010 at 12:55 pm

    At first:
    LOVE your blog!

(apologize for my bad english) My rate:After my train I washed up my legs with cool water, it´s the best relax for muscles.

Good luck with regeneration…keep your optimism.

  34. Caitlin @ Right Foot Forward on March 8, 2010 at 1:14 pm

Stretching, foam roller, and ice! I’m sure you will feel back to normal after a few days. Congrats again on your race.

  35. Kristilyn (My 29th Year) on March 8, 2010 at 1:40 pm

How about an Epsom salt bath and some yoga (though obviously not together!)?

    That breakfast cookie looks delicious!

  36. sarah on March 8, 2010 at 2:02 pm

That picture made me tear up 🙂

I have heard magnesium too, to hydrate the muscles.

  37. brittney on March 8, 2010 at 2:03 pm

The Pilot looks like he really needed to see you. Aw.

  38. Tavolini on March 8, 2010 at 2:17 pm

Well–I usually do the RICE right after a long run, but my favorite technique for easing the pain in my legs is relaxing in the tub (NOT an ice bath!) with a glass of wine and a good book 😉

    Congratulations on your race!!

  39. Ellen on March 8, 2010 at 2:54 pm

Aww, so cute! I’ve heard a shot of fish oil helps soreness, but I have yet to test that theory out! I’m sure you know this, but if you don’t get moving a little bit (walks, elliptical, etc) lactic acid will build up in your muscles and make them even MORE sore. I learned that the hard way!

  40. ida on March 8, 2010 at 3:27 pm

if you have access to a pool, some light swimming really helps.

I remember your post from last year about reuniting with the pilot- it was SO sweet.

  41. Steffi on March 8, 2010 at 3:45 pm

Where did you get the mung bean pasta? I checked all the health food stores around, but couldn’t find it 🙁

    • Melissa on March 8, 2010 at 5:41 pm

      Some Whole Foods have it…

      I bought it at Lorisnatural.com:

Wow! Heels after a half marathon!!!! That truly is love 😉 And what a great picture! The only thing I’ve found that works is stretching, stretching, and more stretching. Have you done any gentle yoga???

    • Fitnessista on March 8, 2010 at 5:48 pm

no but i need to. my body is rebelling against all movement right now!

That pasta looks super yum, I finally found some at my WF the other day. Can not wait to try it. Does it taste bean-like? Just wondered if my omnivorous BF would like it as well..?

The pic of you and the pilot makes me smile. 😉

    • Fitnessista on March 8, 2010 at 7:37 pm

doesn’t taste bean-like at all. totally pasta like 🙂
