Personal Style

The concept of personal style is somewhat new to me. I have always been a trend-follower (which is OKAY!) and dressed myself based on which stores were popular at the time. In high school I definitely still shopped based on popular styles (hello Abercrombie ripped jeans) but as I transitioned into my college years, I began to wonder how exactly I wanted to present myself in a way that would set me apart from those high school influences.

Me and my best friend during our early high school years…no comment…

Freshman year of college I spent a little too much of my study time watching The Hills (don’t judge me) and I started to really appreciate how well put-together Lauren Conrad looked all of the time. Thus, my first style crush was born. Though I now had a clearer image of what interested me fashion-wise, I was still too comfortable in my yoga pants, tees, and old navy flip flops. Sophomore year I started paying closer attention to blogs (thanks to Gina!) and this is where my personal style truly evolved.

Lovely ladies like Miss James, Elsie, the lovely ladies at Oh So Lovely vintage, Danielle, and my close friend Emily opened my eyes to the classic styles vintage has to offer as well as the benefit of being brave when trying new styles! Their fashion influence showed me that there are ways dress creatively and on a budget. I began to realize that I liked feeling girly and finding new ways to reflect that through the way I dressed.

Thanks to my love for thrifting, I’ve been able to build up my closet with new-to-me pieces that reflect who I am and how I’m feeling on a day-to-day basis. Places like Buffalo Exchange, Forever 21, and H&M have offered me wardrobe “staples” (jeans/tops/shoes) that keep my style modern and affordable.

My personal style is constantly evolving and I find inspiration in so many different places!

Currently I’d describe my personal style as comfortable, girly, with a classic vintage feel. I always try to keep it classy, too 😉

How would you describe your personal style and how has it changed over time?

I hear ya on the Abercrombie ripped jeans and Boyfriend sweatshirts! I too think my personal style has evolved so much, since college and since starting a blog. I was always the girl who wanted to wear baggy jeans, (fitted on the butt of course) with tighter tops. No one else did this, so I felt cute and different. I try to still be that way with my style. Cute, unique, and sometimes just classic staple pieces work like dark jeans, heels and blazers. It’s so much fun to dress up now that I understand fashion more. Awesome post Meg!

As a 27-year-old professional, I’m in that rut of trying to dress classy, fun and *my age*. This is sometimes so difficult. As much as I want to embrace certain trends, I can’t help but feel they’d be much cuter on someone 10 years younger and I look silly attempting it. It sucks, lol.

Agree! I love trends but it sucks when I see my high school students (I’m a teacher) wear what I wore out on the weekend, awkward! I’m 26 and love the neon trend and I’ll never give up my rompers and mini skirts.

My college style was definitely jeans + T-shirt. These days, that’s still kind of my fallback for casual activities, but I’ve added in a couple of options: shabby apple type skirts and dresses for church and events and Lululemon/yoga-oriented clothes for yoga, Pilates, and teaching Pilates. Simple works best for me because of my body type–short, athletic, and curvy. No fluffy tops for me! I’m also the queen of formfitting clothes… I like things to really fit! (otherwise, I feel dumpy)

      LOVE Shabby Apple!

I’m semi trendy, but not really. I put very little effort into fashion, but I love accessories! Purses, sunglasses, etc. That’s my thing. 🙂

Can I just say that I just stared at that first photo for a good 5 minutes trying to figure out how that could possibly be a picture of Gina? Ha! I didn’t realize this post was written by Meg until I scrolled down. I thought- wow- Gina- you’ve really changed a lot over the years : )

    • China on April 25, 2012 at 5:18 pm

Haha, I thought the same thing! I was thinking, “Wow, high school Gina looks like she could be Meg’s twin!” And then I kept reading and realized it was a Meg post! 🙂

i’m sorry about that! meg is actually going to be writing more fashion posts, so it will become a point when it’s not a “guest post” anymore

    • Sarah on April 26, 2012 at 6:51 am

      Me too!!! Ahh!!

    • Stephanie on April 26, 2012 at 8:59 am

Same here! I kept thinking how is that possible? Is that really her?

  8. Daniela on April 25, 2012 at 5:02 pm

I agree with Sheri, this has happened to me a few times when you’ve feature guest posters. Just a suggestion – perhaps add a note at the top about the guest poster? That way it’s more clear and I don’t have to scroll to the bottom to see who it is.

    • Fitnessista on April 25, 2012 at 10:29 pm

i usually do that, but spaced it this time- i’m sorry. my posts are actually going to be the “guest posts” on this page 😉 haha

      • Melissa on April 26, 2012 at 8:25 pm

Just FYI Gina! Since I read in Google Reader none of your different post types are distinguished… so when you say “on this page” its probably more clear to you and readers on your actual blog than those of us reading through an RSS feed. Not a big deal, but more reason to make it clear maybe?

Hi Meg! How do we follow your style board on Pinterest?

  10. Danielle Hampton on April 25, 2012 at 7:06 pm

Meg how sweet are you to include me in your list of inspiration! Made my day. I LOVE the way you dress and find you to be quite inspirational yourself.

    Loved this post! <3

I developed a personal style after I lost a large amount of weight and had to replace my entire wardrobe. I threw out all the jeans and t-shirts I wore in college and replaced it with skirts and dresses. Now I tell everyone I am “anti-pants” because I love how comfortable skirts and dresses are (plus I live in Southern California, where I can wear them year round). I’m an hourglass, so I always go for the stuff with a defined waist and full skirts. I know it’s very 50s/60s, but I love it.

    • Meg on April 25, 2012 at 8:52 pm

I support this! Haha I am in love with the 60s!

Thanks, Megan! The first picture is wild! I think you definitely found your true personal style that suits you perfectly in the last few years!<3

Maybe there should be an intro explaining who Meg is and a link to her blog in the post? Kinda confusing, didn’t know why you looked so different in that pic…

I love CAbi, if only it weren’t so expensive. They make it so their clothing lines reuse colors season after season so that way items from ANY season match or looked pulled together! I’m also a big fan of a nice pair of jeans and a simple top. Accessories are simple, tasteful, timeless.

  15. Kim @ HealthyNest on April 27, 2012 at 1:42 pm

My style changes so often it’s frustrating! 🙂 Or maybe it’s just that I’m not a very good shopper. I have the worst buyer’s remorse–I’ll honestly look at a shirt I bought a month ago and think “why did I buy this?? I’m over this look already!” I love the idea of thrifting but haven’t had a ton of success in the past…I’m often overwhelmed by the racks and racks of clothes all jammed together. Any tips for getting started??

The HILLS? Girl, no judging here. I still miss that show, lol 🙂
