Plank burner

I’m not sure if you guys remember the plank fail video of 2013. If you don’t remember, that’s probably a good thing haha. It was for Winter Shape Up, and I really wanted to make a plank ab burner. I went to my usual filming spot -a private studio at work- and saw that they were doing construction over the studio. It would have been a little awkward. Soooo I went to another gym where we have a membership and filmed it in the middle of the weight room, with people working out around me. Here’s the kicker: I was too scared to start talking since it would have been so strange to fellow gym-goers. So I didn’t. And it was awkward. And I still posted it. 5 years into blogging, and you’d think I would have learned that if you don’t get it right, don’t post it. Or at least post it and laugh at your fail whale.

Plank 1 of 1

And now, months later, it finally got filmed with some actual instruction in there 😉 This time Sasha is leading us through a little plank burner, with some fun twists on the usual suspects.

Here’s a text version for my friends at work:

Plank burner

Speaking of planks, we did peacock pose in yoga the other night.

I busted it out for the first time ever and was SO excited. That is, until the next day and I realized I must have done something wrong… my stomach and organs are hurting :/

A current non-fail:

Enchis

Cheesy chicken enchiladas. They always turn out right 🙂

Today is a bit of a longie for me at work, but I get to teach some of my favorites: DJ Dance and Zumba!

See ya later today with a little “What I Ate Thursday.”

Have a wonderful day! <3

xoxo

Gina

Sasha and I are teaching Zumba tonight at a local studio! If you’re a Tucson blog friend and would like to attend, send me an email and I’ll pass on the deets.

What’s your all-time favorite plank variation? I love to hate up-and-down planks (moving from hands to forearms). It gets me every single time.

I loooooooove love love to do plank (either on hands or forearms) and tap one toe out to the side, under to the other side, back out to the first side, then to centre then switch legs.

Planks are such a good workout but sooo hard! I guess that makes them good! I am a big runner, but ab work is so vital to keeping yourself strong and healthy!

  5. Holly @ EatGreatBEGreat on July 25, 2013 at 10:54 am

This plank burner is intense! Love it! The chicken enchiladas look great! Will you be posting the recipe at some point?

  6. Sarah @ Yogi in Action on July 25, 2013 at 10:57 am

I love planks in yoga when you’re on your elbows and go from dolphin (a modified downward dog) to plank, and back and forth. It always burns my forearms, abs and my shoulders! Plus it’s a great prep for headstand!

  7. Livi on July 25, 2013 at 10:57 am

I love some up and down planks! I try to fit some in as a study break or during commercials if I’m watching TV!

    Yay for planks!!

I’ve been doing a lot of tabata plank sets lately, 8 x 20 sec. (elbow and straight arm). It’s an easy way to get in my planks 🙂

  10. Kelly @ Kelly Runs for Food on July 25, 2013 at 11:06 am

The up-down plank is one of my favorites, even though I hate doing it at the time. I also like side planks with hip raises (not sure the technical term).

  11. Holly on July 25, 2013 at 11:12 am

I love the call out to “people reading this at work”. 🙂 Guilty! But thank you!

I have a love/hate relationship with planks, but this looks killer!

  12. Laura @losingrace on July 25, 2013 at 11:22 am

I really like doing side planks with the twist, I actually feel it working while I’m doing it and I like that!

  13. Lisa on July 25, 2013 at 11:25 am

Planks are definitely my favorite way to work my abs.
Can’t wait to try this one out.

  14. Rebecca P. on July 25, 2013 at 11:28 am

I have been loving plank jacks lately. But really I love any form of a plank! Such an awesome strength building move.

  15. Marissa on July 25, 2013 at 11:51 am

  17. Maureen on July 25, 2013 at 12:02 pm

I love to hate planks! 😉 But they work my core so well.

  18. Becky @ TheBexFactor.com on July 25, 2013 at 12:06 pm

I just rocked this out. Thank you! I love planks, I usually try to hold for as long as possible. I’m trying to work my way up to a 5 minute plank again after my c-section.

  19. FitBritt@MyOwnBalance on July 25, 2013 at 12:13 pm

Gina, you should put up a video of some DJ Dance moves! You teach it almost every week, I’d love to see what it’s all about. I totally hear you on the video awkwardness moment! I don’t remember the video though! Thanks for the plank workout!

  20. april on July 25, 2013 at 12:28 pm

oh, planks hurt so good! i haven’t done one in forever – i should probably start doing them again.

is it weird to crave enchiladas at 9:30 in the morning? ok, didn’t think so 😉

  21. Lauren @ Sassy Molassy on July 25, 2013 at 12:29 pm

Gina, it’s funny that you think that plank burner was a bust because I totally think it’s awesome. In fact, several mornings in the last few months I’ve searched for it on your blog because I think it’s one of your harder ab workouts. I just look up every once in a while to make sure I’m on the right move. But as always, I don’t mind that you posted a new workout for us to try. 🙂

  22. Tracy on July 25, 2013 at 1:07 pm

I hate up & downs!!! Which is why I should love them of course.

I really do like knee crunches in straight arm plank because I feel like they open my hips…always a good feeling!

Lately I’ve been doing an elbow plank with my forearms perpendicular to my torso with fists together. Really challenging!

  23. Liesl @ Fitnessinthekitchen on July 25, 2013 at 1:25 pm

The enchiladas look fantastic! What enchilada sauce do you use? Or do you make your own? Do you have a simple recipe? I’d be interested. Thanks.

  24. Danica @ It's Progression on July 25, 2013 at 2:28 pm

just did that ab burner video…I felt it mostly in my shoulders actually, much more than in my core!
    thanks for sharing it!

  25. Jenni on July 25, 2013 at 3:10 pm

What is it about melted cheese?! Gah, that looks delicious. As for plank position…kill me now. I need to get stronger at plank. Right now it’s like death to me. I’ve been doing too much cardio and not enough strength lately!

  26. Andrea @ The Fit Scoop on July 25, 2013 at 3:25 pm

I have to favorite plank variations:
    1. Plank with feet on a medicine ball. You can do this as a regular front plank or as a side plank with the feet stacked on the ball – super challenging!
    2. You do a normal up-down plank but add in the challenge of moving a dumbbell. Start out in a plank on your forearms with with the dumbbell on the ground on the outside of your right forearm. Come up to your hands. Lift your left hand and reach it under your right arm to grab the dumbbell and move the dumbbell to your left side and set it down (all while holding the plank and keeping your hips squared to the floor). Put your left hand back down on the ground and then move down to your forearms. Repeat the cycle by moving the weight with your right hand back to your right side to complete the rep. Sorry for the long explanation – it is a killer plank variation though! All my clients love/hate it 🙂

I need to try that! I love planks and need a challenge thanks forposting.

  27. CourtStar @ StarSystemz on July 25, 2013 at 5:03 pm

I LOVE Planks and try and do many many variations INCLUDING up + downs 😉 My favorite is taking a medicine ball + passing it back and forth in plank kind of like a Kitty 🙂 Thanks for sharing! Love + Shine CourtStar

Lol I’m impressed that you still did the video – I feel embarrassed taking photos of myself in the gym, and haven’t mustered up the courage to do a video there yet! Planks – I love them, but absolutely love to hate the kind where your feet are suspended in TRX straps. They get me every time! 🙂

  29. Maria@The_Brooklyn_Fig on July 25, 2013 at 7:53 pm

Great job on doing peacock pose- that looks really challenging!
Just watched your plank video and love how it’s quick but challenging. We’re going away this weekend and this will definitely be a way to get an ab workout in at the hotel with no equipment.

  30. Liz @ I Heart Vegetables on July 26, 2013 at 7:40 am

That sounds like an awesome workout! I can’t wait to try it!

  31. Avery @ YoungAspirations on July 28, 2013 at 5:37 pm

So excited about this plank workout! I’ve been looking for a nice short plank workout in video form. This is perfect!

  32. Elizabeth @ SouthernColor on August 21, 2013 at 9:58 pm

Great workout! I’ve added this workout to my normal routine and can definitely tell a difference! Question, I can no longer view the video, will you be posting it somewhere else? Thanks 🙂

Can you please let me know if this workout is safe to do during pregnancy. I am six weeks along and want to know if this is ok. I exercise regularly so my doctor has cleared me to exercise. Just not sure about planks.

    • Fitnessista on March 11, 2014 at 11:47 pm

i would check with your doctor to make sure, but planks are generally safe during pregnancy
