Pool, pull-ups and a [zumba] playlist

After an awesome breakfast,

Breakfast 1 of 1 4

(pancakes, berries and eggs)

We grabbed our swim stuff and left for a morning adventure – it was a perfect day for a swim!

Swimming

In standard Gina fashion, I messed up the times at our gym to use the pool. I thought the pool class started at 10:30, but turns out that it ENDS at 10:30. When we got there, the pool was filled with ladies in sun hats, twisting and rocking horse-ing away. I called the dadoo to see if he would mind if we took a dip in their pool, and he said no prob. It worked out perfectly, especially since my dad’s pool > anything else. (It has salt water, which is lovely)

The Pilot even got to join us 🙂

Swimming3

We had a blast taking turns swimming with Liv, splashing and pretending to be fish, then we came home for watermelon,

Watermelon 1 of 1 2

(swimming and melon — summer is officially here)

and the standard family pull-up contest.

Pullup bar 1 of 1

The Pilot ordered the pull-up bar a week or so ago, and when he did, I thought, “That’s cool but we’ll probably never use it.” Surprisingly, we’ve used it almost every day, and it’s been a fun little competition. The Pilot can do more than I can, but my goal is to get to 5 full pull-ups by the end of July. I’ll take a video to share 😉 In our house, we’re randomly known to bust out in pull-ups and sometimes, late at night, we practice yoga inversions. We’re really cool. Haha.

This afternoon, we’re going to visit Kyle and Meg -they’re back from their honeymoon!- and after yoga, I’m going to work on revamping my playlists. I’ve started to get sick of the usuals and it’s time to power it up again. Whenever I have new songs on my playlist, I get a better workout, and it’s also great motivation for running.

I seem to have an easy time revamping my Zumba playlist… maybe listening to the “En Vivo” station on XM has something to do with it? Here are some of my current Zumba faves, which I also like to listen to for regular strength and cardio.

If you’re a Zumbie, what’s your current favorite song? Any requests for choreo? Sasha and I are making some new videos tomorrow to share on our channel!

What’s your favorite at-home fitness tool?

Hope you’re having a great day!

xoxo

Gina

I’m obsessed with “Meto Mano” from ZIN 44 right now, and I’m lovin’ Impacto (From the Yankee Daddy 😉 ) and my peeps are all in love with “In The Summertime” from ZIN 44 for a pre-cooldown song.

I’m impressed! I’m still working on doing more than one 🙂

Yay! Thank you for the list! I am always looking for new music. My current favorite (well not really “current” as it has been my go-to song for the past year plus) is Danza Kuduro (Don Omar ft. Lucenzo).

I second being incredibly impressed!! I’m still working on doing 1 real pull-up. Swimming and watermelon sounds like SO much fun, that definitely spells summer!

  6. Becca on May 20, 2013 at 6:43 pm

I’ve been all about the watermelon here, too! It’s the BEST after a hot run!

I’m not a Zumba-er, but lately I’ve been into Will.i.am’s “Bang Bang” and Calvin Harris’s “Let’s Go.” I think both are adaptable to Zumba. 🙂

Man. I cannot wait for watermelon to be more “in-season” around these parts. Right now it’s way too early.

Semi-new to commenting, but I just wanted to say that I’ve re-introduced myself to the blogging community, and I really love reading you’re blog, so I’ve linked it in my favourites 🙂

My favourite at home workout tool would have to be kettlebells; you can do so much with them, and you can see results fairly quickly if you remain consistent!

I loooove Zumba! My current favorite is the new Macklemore “can’t hold us.” It’s super fun and the slower chorus allows for a little breather if needed 😉

Me and my hubs are super cool like that too haha! We haven’t used our pull-up bar lately because it was marking the door frames, so we gotta figure out a way around that one!

The day I can do ONE pull up will be a magical day indeed, the world might even stop spinning 🙂

A salt water pool sounds absolutely lovely!

Haha, I guess I lost the pull-up bet! I think my favorite at-home fitness tool is just simple dumbbells. I have a bunch of other equipment, but they’re always my fail safe. My hubs has 20-30 lbs (as opposed to my 8-10s)… I feel strong when I can lift his!

I’m still working on one pull up. I’ll get there eventually 😉

Please please share your choreo for “Limbo…” it’s one of my favorite dance songs. I tend to play dance-y music while I’m cooking (probably a good thing that I live alone), and that’s one of my favorites!

I’m loving Livi’s little swim suit! Soo cute!

Ahh that pool looks so nice…ours just needs a few more degrees and then I’m ready for summer!

  18. Jess on May 20, 2013 at 10:13 pm

I hope you share your playlist when you do a new one! I’m in need of a new good one too! Also, do you still listen to any podcasts? I was wondering if there were any more good ones out there I should pick up!

Hahhaa family pull up contest, too funny! That reminds me of being a kid, my dad always had one of those around the house. I honestly don’t think I could do a pull up, I’m super intimidated by them!

I feel like watermelon is the best post-swimming/summertime snack! That watermelon looks super ripe too – I haven’t seen any like that yet here on the east coast!

Um I’m going to need to check out this XM station you speak of. Pitbull on Pandora is my fave workout mix so sounds like I might be able to get some new tune ideas off the radio. Oh and my fave at home fitness tool is my spin bike 🙂

I just did the ZIN 44 recently and I LOVED it! Gina and Beto really kicked it up a notch and I was literally dripping in sweat. Every song on that ZIN release is high energy!

  23. Kelly on May 21, 2013 at 1:27 pm

We have been doing this song in Zumba called Gimme, Gimmie by Beenie Man. I love the song, it is fun but the problem is my zumba instructor wants us to walk and shake our but at the same time. It is sooo hard for me, but I’m trying to get better. I also like Zoomer by Les Jumo, that one is fun and we have a fun arm movement in it that i like. One last one that we were doing but haven’t for a while is Do you Dig it? I don’t know who they use for Zumba but I bought a version by Ray Barretto cuz I loved the song so much. Can’t wait to see new vids on your new channel. Love your blog so far… 🙂

The pool and watermelon- two of my very favorite things about summer!

  25. Sarah on May 21, 2013 at 4:08 pm

Yes!!!! Please do more Zumba videos! I’m UH-bssed!!!

  26. jess on September 24, 2013 at 4:41 pm

Hi Gina, can you do a post on how to learn to perform a pull-up? I bought one of those bars, but have no idea how to get my feet of the ground 🙂

    • Fitnessista on September 24, 2013 at 5:45 pm

try a chair under the bar to support you. then when you get more comfortable, switch to one leg on the chair!
