Race Face

Heyyyyy 😀 Happy Saturday! Hope you’re having a wonderful morning! I was so proud of our family for waking up early and making it to the 5k.. we have a tendency to hit the snooze button a few hundred times on Saturday.

And it DIDN’T RAIN!

002

So I got to rock the new sneaks… and I loved them! They’re just like my old Asics.. comfy, light and speedy 😉

011

For my pre-race bfast I had a nanner with the last of this week’s jar of almond butter (about 1/2 tbs?)

001

We got to the site, registered and walked to the starting line. I’m not gonna lie, I was extremely nervous. Remember the last time I ran for speed??? Neither can I 😉 I really wanted to push myself and was so glad the pilot crawled out of bed to be my running buddy.

I did my usual race strategy: picked the girl in the cutest outfit and told myself I was going to beat her. I always find a girl who appears to be the same age that I am, in a cute matchy-matchy outfit and convince myself I’m going to leave her in the dust. Today’s victim was a really pretty blond girl in a purple Nike outfit- matching shorts and tank top. Super cute. And yes, I beat her 😉

I finished in 25:20 and felt like DEATH when it was over. It was 100% humidity and I really needed the pilot’s pep talks to get me through since I was choking for air (and my stomach started cramping up)!!! I was so glad I did it, though. It was an excellent reminder that I can run a lot faster –my best 5k time is 24:15- and will be good motivation for me to keep running on the weekends..

And the best part, THE SHIRT!!!

004

All you have to do to get me to run is make me pay you and give me a shirt when it’s over 😀

The back:

005

(VSU’s mascot is the blazer… which appears to be a funny man with his hair on fire???)

Since he was such a trooper for waking up and running with me, the pilot got a bagel at ABC when we were done:

003

(hubba hubba)

And I came home for some cantaloupe:

006

I know I’ll eat more later but my stomach is feeling a little iffy. I don’t think that nanner had enough time to digest before we ran.

So I’m off to start the cleaning extravaganza, make some macaroons and update the recipe page, run some errands (hoping my new camera gets here today!) and then who knows!

Hope you have a great day and I’ll see ya tonight.

Much love,

G$

*Thanks again (SO mucho) for helping me get the word out about re-subscribing to the bloggy. The face lift we did removed my blog from Google readers and I’m so glad to see all of you back here post blog plastic surgery 😉 To say thank you, I’m running a giveaway on Monday morning just to let ya’ll know how much I appreciate it—stay tuned 😀

Something to think: “It’s only temporary.” I remind myself of this often, particularly during a race or tough workout. It’s going to be over soon and before I know it, I’ll be sitting in my car, driving home. It’s totally helped me push through races when I feel like giving up, teach a hardcore aerobics class even if I’m feeling blah, and kept me from scrambling out of doctor’s offices as I’m terrified of needles. I just tell myself that it’s temporary and isn’t going to last forever. What are some of your favorite workout mantras??

Congrats on the run! I love the new blog look. My favorite workout or tough task mantra: “Pain is temporary. Quitting is forever.” I think that’s Lance Armstrong. It gets my whiny self in gear though. 🙂

  17. Amelia on August 22, 2009 at 2:02 pm

So glad I found your blog again! The new format looks terrific.
Congrats on the run! Races are so worth it for the tshirts! LOL 🙂

Great job on the race… running is def the hardest exercise for me to get into, so I always love to give props to those who can do it so well! I’m such a kickboxing/cardio class/yoga junkie for whatever reason?? 🙂

  22. caronae on August 22, 2009 at 3:35 pm

Wow! What a great race — congrats. My workout mantra is that I’ll feel better when I’m done, and I always do!

  23. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on August 22, 2009 at 3:45 pm

8 min miles, not too shabby there mama 🙂 Glad you enjoyed yourself and went out and did it. Which is what my workout mantra is when I am feeling less than inspired….I tell myself that I will feel better when it’s over and I am looking back at my day knowing I did it rather than skipped it. And generally within 5 mins of working out, the adrenaline and feel good chemicals are released and it becomes alot easier and I don’t know why I was second guessing doing the workout. It’s just that initial push out the door that can be hard, I hear ya.

I just bought some new Asics, too! Love ’em!

    Great 5k time!

    Hi Gina!

Great job on the race, and awesome pre-run grub! Doesn’t get much better than pb and banana!

I have been a reader for some time now, and finally took the plung in starting my own blog TODAY!! 🙂 It is a very new blog obviously, but I am hoping that you will swing by from time to time to catch up with me!

Also, once I get my blogroll up and running, would you mind if I added you to it?

Sounds awesome. I love the new layout. Only thing I miss is the list of tags down the side. Other than that it’s great. 🙂

I’ve always wanted to ask what are your thoughts on Orthorexia?

    • Fitnessista on August 22, 2009 at 7:07 pm

      hey girl,
my thoughts on orthorexia are similar to that of many other forms of disordered eating.. it is very saddening and i have deep sympathy for those going through this (and all) types of illness and always hope that they seek treatment for what they’re experiencing. i feel like it’s so important to live a healthy and balanced life, which sometimes includes laying on the couch instead of working out or reaching for some cookies instead of salad if that’s what we feel like!.. complete fixation on being perfect is unnecessary and we just need to love ourselves wholly, whether we we eat/work out perfectly of not. if we can’t love ourselves completely, who will??

  28. K on August 22, 2009 at 5:48 pm

G$!! I hadn’t realized you upgraded your lovely blog and I’ve been missing out on your life! Don’t worry – it’s fixed now 😀 Phew!!

I love your race strategy! CONGRATS to the both of you!! I hope your blog quickly recovers from her plastic surgery 😉

  29. Suzanne on August 22, 2009 at 8:06 pm

nice 5k! I bet Miss Purple was devasted that you beat her 😉 I reckon that SHE had YOU picked out to beat….because her thinking probably went, “oh that chick is way too pretty to be very athletic” well, she had her come-uppence yesiree, way to prove that fast+foxy=fitnessista

I moved to a brand new city, state, and apartment this weekend, woo-hoo, and I’ve been invited to a pot-luck next Friday. I natch need to bring something that makes the neighbors love me. Something yummy, unique, a means to secure nanny positions for their adorablee minis perhaps. In short, I want Jesus tap dancing on their tongues. Any ideas for something that is portable/pot-lucky, redonk delicious, but also still maybe quasi-healthy (just so they don’t think their new community resident is Paula Deen….)?

    • Fitnessista on August 23, 2009 at 4:50 pm

did you want to bring an actual meal, or a dessert??
here are some of my favorites:
      tabbouleh salad
      spinach quiche
veggie cups (plastic cups with julienned veggies and grape tomatoes on cocktail skewers with dressing on the bottom)
vegan s’mores cupcakes (veggiegirl has an awesome recipe)
bruschetta (on bread or endive leaves)
sweet potato fries are always a winner, too 😀
      hope this helps!

Good work on the race! I have the same shoes (different color) and I LOVE them. I actually have 3 pair. They are faves.

  31. Jenna on August 22, 2009 at 8:24 pm

good job on the race gina!

  32. Angharad on August 22, 2009 at 9:28 pm

Woot woot!!! Congrats on the 5K! I get scared running for speed as well – so much more of a comfortable distance person. Sounds like you completely rocked it though and SO nice to have the pilot along for support and encouragement!

  33. Sarah (LovIN My Tummy) on August 22, 2009 at 10:25 pm

Way to go girl! I’m proud of you for fighting those, “I could just sleep in…” urges!!!

  34. Erin on August 22, 2009 at 11:57 pm

You guy are the sweetest couple ever – besides us. 🙂 Great job today sweet pea!
P.S. THat picture of the pilot (the pizzle?) is soooooo presh.

  35. Nicole on August 23, 2009 at 1:44 am

I’ve been lurking briefly and you’re such an inspiration. Your comment that hardcore exercise is “only temporary” is spot-on. Amazing that you can apply that approach to both childbirth and exercise–LOL! I know that’s how I approached labor and it was so euphoric after I gave birth. Very similar to exercise. Thanks for helping me make that connection. I’ll use it!

  36. Danielle on August 23, 2009 at 7:04 am

Way to go! That’s amazing girlie, especially when speed is not exactly your cup of tea. You and the hubby are adorable. Eat up when hunger strikes 🙂

  37. simpledaisy on August 23, 2009 at 7:21 am

Congrats on your 5k!! That’s a great time! My best time for a 5k was 24:30 and that was several years ago!!!! Way to go~

  38. Katie on August 24, 2009 at 1:22 pm

I love your race strategy! So clever! And I’m sure, a good motivator!
