Sad trombone

Guess who’s glasses-bound for 7 days?

Glasses

They’re about 10 years old, the wrong prescription, and were stretched out to the point where I had to make a little elastic head wrap to hold them onto my nugget.

Since my eye was still crying and burning at around noon, I decided to call the eye doc. Kyle and Trev the uncles came to play with Livi while I went, and good thing I decided to go, because turns out I have a bacterial infection in both eyes. The doc gave me some drops, I ordered new glasses and contacts, had my current ones fixed so they fit my head now (!) and came home. My first concern was giving the infection to Livi but the doc said as long as I wash my hands a lot and don’t touch her eyes it should be bueno.

I’m not used to wearing my glasses at all, which is another one of the thousand reasons I haven’t gotten Lasik (scary eye claw is #1). I only wear them at night, so I feel like I should put my contacts in and start the day, but instead I feel blurry and groggy. It’s weird. And 7 days?! I might just take them off to teach Zumba.. but then I can’t see anything.

Instead of my date with Zuzana last night, I ate carrot cake and watched Girls.

Carrot cakes

Even though the carrot cake had plenty of nutrition (nuts and veggies haha), had a chicken marinara melt with goat cheese- both from Renee’s organic oven.

Marinara

Breakfast:

Bfast 3

(Bfast cookie dough cereal with banana and crumbled macaroon. The green spot is because I ate with the same spoon I used to smash Livi’s breakfast avocado and banana)

Adventures in baby-proofing continue…

Cords

Yikes.

Spin class this afternoon. Goal: to fog up my glasses 😉

Have a happy Saturday!
xoxo

Something to think: This has been floating around the internets- my friend Erin recently posted it on her Facebook wall and thought it was worth a share.

I Am Thankful For…

…the mess to clean after a party because it means I have been surrounded by friends.

…the taxes I pay because it means that I am employed.

…the clothes that fit a little too snug because it means I have enough to eat.

…a lawn that needs mowing, windows that need cleaning and gutters that need fixing because it means that I have a home.

…the spot I find at the far end of the parking lot because it means I am capable of walking.

…all the complaining I hear about our government because it means we have freedom of speech.

…my huge heating bill because it means that I am warm.

…the lady behind me in church who sings off key because it means I can hear.

…the piles of laundry and ironing because it means my loved ones are nearby.

…the alarm that goes off in the early morning hours because it means that I’m alive.

…weariness and aching muscles at the end of the day because it means I have been productive.

Love the thankful for list! So true, and so good to remember these things.

I’ve heard so much about Girls. I hope it comes to this area of the world soon!

Hope your eye gets better soon!

do you have hbo? it’s on demand right now, so i just record it and watch it at night when i get some time to chill 🙂

  2. lindsey on July 14, 2012 at 1:16 pm

Loving the list! That carrot cake looks divine. I found wedding cake gelato last night at our local gelateria and ended up going home with an extra half pint…I’m thankful that I have that to look forward to after our kids go to sleep tonight 🙂

    Have a great day!

Oooh, I feel ya with being glasses bound. I had an infection a few years ago and I probably walked around like a sad Charlie Brown because I couldn’t wear my contacts. I hate wearing my glass, even just at night. Good luck to you while working out… I’ve never dared to do that in my glasses.

    • Fitnessista on July 14, 2012 at 1:37 pm

that’s a huge reason why i skipped last night- they just feel so uncomfortable and heavy on my face

      • jen on July 14, 2012 at 2:02 pm

I feel like I can see better in my contacts. I’ve had the eye infection a bunch of times due to my allergies so my doc recommended I switch to clear care solution makes a huge different my eyes feel less itchy but I started allergy shots in oct so thinking thats gonna help a lot.

I wrote my college application essays about how uncomfortable it was (physically and emotionally) for me to wear glasses! Haha. After a scratched and scarred cornea, and some tests that involved numbing my eyeball (weirdest feeling ever), I had to wear glasses for six months(!) and now use one-day contacts instead of two-week ones. All that to say, I sympathize! 😛

  4. Jackie on July 14, 2012 at 1:20 pm

I’ve wanted to see Girls for awhile now. I feel so behind.

I also wanted to say that I am new to blogging, but I was inspired A LOT by you and your fabulous blog. I have been a reader for some time now, and never took the leap to blog myself, but recently did and I am so glad I did. So, for that I say thank you!

    -Jackie

(PS- the carrot cake looks good!)

  5. Mollie on July 14, 2012 at 1:35 pm

    1. you look so pretty with glasses on! When I was younger I secretly always wanted glasses because I thought they looked really good haha…no excuse to get them though..I should be appreciative of that 🙂
    2. That carrot cake looks AMAZING. That is my favorite kind of cake and I haven’t had it in forever and it is so reminiscent of the fall for me which I can’t wait for and is rapidly approaching!
    3. Your dinner also looks delish. I am so jealous of the yummy eats you guys have in AZ! Between Renee’s and the thai food that I constantly drool over-I have to make a trip out there!

    Have a great weekend Gina!

I’ve been getting eye infections like crazy lately for some reason. I hate wearing my glasses because the frames are so small… I can barely see anything! You look cute in yours though. I hope your eyes heal quickly! 🙂

  7. Laura on July 14, 2012 at 1:43 pm

I feel your pain. This morning I woke up with a red looking left eye this morning so I am also sporting my glasses which I wear maybe at night once or twice a month-I cannot sit still to save my life so they drive me crazy!

  8. Averie @ Averie Cooks on July 14, 2012 at 1:46 pm

Good luck with your eye situation, Gina. That has to be so frustrating…hang in there 🙂

  9. Amanda on July 14, 2012 at 1:49 pm

I wasn’t able to wear my contacts after I got pregnant, so I had to get used to my glasses and now I actually prefer them with two babies, one less thing to have to do in the morning.

  10. Sana on July 14, 2012 at 2:05 pm

I hate working out in glasses, buttt you gotta make do sometimes!

Carrot cake looks great. That is my favorite! I had lasik done in 2008. Best. thing. EVER. I was terrified too and I had been thinking about doing it since 2004. They give you a valium so you really don’t care about the scary eye claw. I only took one, started having hot flashes, took off my jacket and started fanning. I am ALWAYS cold. By the time it was my turn, I really could have cared less what they did. LOL The woman beside me said “How many pills did you take?’ I only took one. She said, “oh no! I took all three of mine!!” I am a lightweight on alcohol and I guess meds too. hehe They took me back to the “surgery room” (it was a table you lay down on) and gave me a little stuffed animal and blanket. They put the thing over my eye and I never noticed anything about a claw. It was the suction that bothered me the most. I don’t even know if there was a claw. They have some sort of suction thing that holds your eye in place. It did not hurt, but for some reason, I didn’t like it at all. The poor stuffed animal I had in my hands paid the price. I kept wringing his little neck and twisting him as much as possible. I bet 2 mins later, we were done. And I could SEE instantly.

For about a week, while working on my computer, I couldn’t see anything but blur. I literally kept putting eye drops in my eye every 60 secs while doing computer work. Thought that I had really screwed up my eyes, but everything was fine after a week. No working out for week:( That was hard since I was training for a 10 mile trail run. I don’t regret having Lasik done AT ALL. LOVE IT!!! (wore glasses from 1990-1998 and contacts from 1998-2008.

Is it any comfort that you look fierce in your outdated specs Miss Gina? 🙂 I am glad you saw that post, felt like a little gift to me as well. xo Erin

  13. Danielle@cleanfoodcreativefitness on July 14, 2012 at 3:12 pm

Happy Saturday!!!! Love the list of things you are grateful for 🙂 I have the same issues with glasses! I wear contacts but if I for some reason wear my glasses all day it makes me super groggy too!

  14. Erin on July 14, 2012 at 3:22 pm

You should check out global eyeglasses or zenni optical (both online). You can order really cheap glasses with your prescription. I got a bunch of fun ones and don’t mind wearing my glasses anymore.
Although I do understand that groggy feeling from not putting in contacts–I find eye drops help me get that awake feeling.
But, your glasses look really cute actually!

  15. Julia on July 14, 2012 at 3:24 pm

Sorry about the glasses situation Gina. I’ve just got to plug LASIK to you though. My husband got it (he was totally blind without glasses – very bad prescription) and he loves it. We opted for the most expensive one that has a lifetime ‘warranty’ and care. His eye doctor is amazing, and very attentive to whatever he needs even now -two years after surgery! It’s so worth it. Hubs glasses were $600 a pair, so I figure we will have paid off the lasik in full within a few years as far as ‘cost per wear’ philosophy goes. Don’t be afraid if you want to get it. It’s worth it!

  16. amanda on July 14, 2012 at 3:24 pm

not that this will make it all better, but I LOVE glasses! I think they’re such a cute addition to anyone’s look. that said, this is coming from a girl with 20/20 vision. haha…happy saturday, Gina 🙂

  17. Katie @ Talk Less, Say More on July 14, 2012 at 4:10 pm

  18. Sam @ Better With Sprinkles on July 14, 2012 at 4:12 pm

Love the thankful list – definitely a good way to look at life’s little annoyances.

And I hear you on the glasses thing – I never wear mine if I can avoid it. The goal is to save up for lasik one day.

  19. Brittany @ Delights and Delectables on July 14, 2012 at 4:34 pm

So sorry about the infection girl!! I had the same problem a couple months ago! No fun… I had to wear my 13!!! year old glasses to the Blend Retreat. I was a hot mess… lol! Good luck baby proofing. I love that list. I printed it out!

  20. Annette @ FitnessPerks on July 14, 2012 at 4:42 pm

Oh that carrot cake looks SO good!!!

I hope your eye feels better soon 🙁

And YES-love that list. When we’re grateful, things look/turn out SO much better!

  21. Dynamics on July 14, 2012 at 4:51 pm

I got a horrific infection and can never wear contacts again. I opted for Lasik since I only had to do one eye. I LOVE it. You should do it. A little discomfort for one day is worth it. Just make sure you go to a VERY GOOD doctor. Seriously, check out their education and yada yada. Go for it Gina.

  22. Lauren on July 14, 2012 at 6:09 pm

Uhh, I feel youuuu! I just came off of my 10 day ‘no-contacts allowed-glasses-fun.’ It was not enjoyable! I didn’t realize how much my glasses bring down my confidence. I never felt pretty 🙁 But, just went back to the eye doc and my cornea is no longer inflamed, so YAYYYY!! Contact lyfeeeee 😉

  23. Amber L on July 14, 2012 at 6:25 pm

Oh my gosh! I totally do that exact same I am thankful poem with my fourth graders every year at thanksgiving time! Its great seeing some of the things kids come up with! I also do a new one each year. 🙂

  24. Kristen on July 14, 2012 at 6:57 pm

I got lasik last summer and it was the best investment ever!

  25. Nicole on July 14, 2012 at 7:43 pm

I can totally relate-after dealing with eye infections and tearing since November, I just had surgery to create a new tear duct (complete blockage from scar tissue). I am also a contacts girl and have been wearing my 11 year old glasses. 🙂

    Speedy recovery to you!

  26. Maggie on July 14, 2012 at 7:55 pm

I’m sory about the eye infection 🙁 I had a really terrible infection several years ago that I ignored and it got so bad that it actually damaged my ability to focus (my eyes now do this thing that looks like a camera lens adjusting) and I can’t wear my contacts for more than a few hours. Plus I get several infections a year now. So follow the doctor’s orders!

  27. chrissy on July 14, 2012 at 8:24 pm

    you still sexy gina! 😉

  28. Sam @ Fit for My Fork on July 14, 2012 at 8:47 pm

Sorry to hear about the eye infection! 🙁
My mom’s just had to get new glasses too, but for a different reason… she and my stepdad were going canoeing with their dog and my stepdad decided that it was a brilliant idea to jump into the canoe as it was just drifting away from the dock. So he hopped in and the canoe toppled right over, chucking my mom, her dog, and my stepdad into the water. She lost her glasses and was not very happy about it, but somehow my stepdad managed to keep his sunglasses on his face! No justice, I tell ya! And the dog’s not too keen to be anywhere near the canoe now 😉 So don’t take your new glasses canoeing! That’s the lesson I’m passing on today. 😀

Love that thankful list! So important to remember! 🙂

  30. Anna @ The Guiltless Life on July 14, 2012 at 9:34 pm

I had to wear my glasses for 2 weeks before my laser surgery and I also only wore them to bed so hadn’t updated them at all! I got headaches (my work is all on a computer so when you can’t see that well it was tough) and I know exactly what you mean about feeling groggy etc.

If it helps, the laser eye surgery really isn’t that bad (I was exactly the same as you). My eyesight was worse than -5 so they recommended PRK and that is a WAY better operation than LASIK – no cutting and it was over in a snap! The recovery is slightly tougher but it’s really only 1-2 days of needing numbing drops for some discomfort and then you’re home free. I reallllly recommend it!

    • Anna @ The Guiltless Life on July 14, 2012 at 9:35 pm

Sorry, I meant to say I really recommend that you get a consultation now because they want you to wear glasses for 7 days prior to having a consultation so all the measurements are accurate – so if you’re having to wear them anyway why not just go for a consult and then make up your mind? Just make sure you go somewhere that offers both LASIK and PRK – there is always a better type for one person’s eye, so my eye doctor really doesn’t trust places that only offer one type.

      • Fitnessista on July 14, 2012 at 11:01 pm

that’s a fantastic idea. i’ll book an appointment, since i have to wear my glasses anyway

  31. Emily on July 14, 2012 at 10:09 pm

Boo infection! But I know you’ll make the best of it, ’cause that’s what you do 🙂

Avocado in cookie dough cereal – mmm, morning healthy fats!

  32. Sara on July 14, 2012 at 10:54 pm

Scary eye claw.. natural childbirth *balance balance* …

Do they still even use the scary eye claw? I was worried about that too, but a) there were happy drugs and b) it was a springy ring, not a claw, and c) it’s only in there for a very short time.

I had the worst lasik experience: they had to stop after the first eye because there were air bubbles under the flap (they dissipate but it takes 2-3 hours, so I went home, then came back to have the other eye done), then at the one year check up, some of the astigmatism had fought back, so I had a revision (= lasik twice). And, even with all that, I’d still do it again. Travel, exercise, natural disasters, all of these things are SO much easier without the added stress of glasses or contacts.

Heey, maybe the eyes are why you are not a swimmer? I didn’t love swimming: I either couldn’t see, or was paranoid about losing a contact.

    • Fitnessista on July 14, 2012 at 10:56 pm

hahah you’re right- i thought after childbirth i wouldn’t be afraid of anything, but nope. scary eye claw wins
that’s an excellent point. every time i would actually swim, i would lose a contact or get water in my eyes and have to put in new contacts

  33. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on July 15, 2012 at 7:00 am

I’m sorry about your eye! I know how you feel – I have to wear glasses and they can be such a pain in the butt sometimes! I would love to get Lasik someday too.

Also that carrot cake looks glorious! 😀

    • Fitnessista on July 15, 2012 at 2:58 pm

      it was GLORIOUS

  34. Lauren T on July 16, 2012 at 12:05 pm

Sorry about your eye! Wearing glasses is no fun, but hopefully these 7 days will be over before you know it! Thanks for posting “I am Thankful for…” I really needed that as a reminder to be thankful and happy for all I have today!
