Sleep, jab, cross, kick

Hey everyone! How are ya? Hope your day is treating you well so far 😀

I’m posting a little later than anticipated because I overslept BIG time this morning. I’ve been horrible about that lately but our bed just sucks me in and I can’t get out 😉 I had big plans to wake up super early, walk the puppies and blog before Jeni picked me up at 8 to go to kickboxing. I woke up to my cell ringing, looked at the clock and it was 8:15! Poor Jeni was sitting in my driveway and I was sleeping peacefully. I had to meet her on base since I still had to get dressed and take the puppies out :/

I grabbed this bar in a frenzy:

005

And kickboxing was AWESOME. I love that she does circuits—we’ll alternate between weights and cardio and my heart was thumping the entire time. It really was a great way to wake up, even though I didn’t start the day off how I’d planned.

After kickboxing, I went to the commiscary to get something I haven’t had in my life in WAY too long:

001

I LOVE this stuff. Since I can’t get the raw cheddar here in V-town, the goat jack cheese is a lovely subsitute 😀

The rest of bfast was the usual sludge:

002

And I got to work on some macaroons to take to the familia since we leave for Tucson in TWO DAYS!!!!

Blonde: (Cinnamon Almond)

003

Cocoa-Carob:

004

Mmmmmmm. I’d be a liar if I said I didn’t have any dough 🙂 Just for quality purposes of course.

I also checked on a little kitchen experiment I had going:

005

I picked up an avocado yesterday that was rock hard and bright green. I’m pretty sure there are no ripe avocados in this town because I’ve gone to three grocery stores in an attempt to find some. I googled ways to ripen avocados quickly and came across a method that said to put the avocado in a brown paper bag with a banana. The ethylene gases are supposed to help the avocado ripen at a rapid pace and said it should be ready to eat within 20 hours.

20 hours later:

006

MUCH better!! Seriously, that avocado was bright green yesterday and now it’s a nice greenish black color. It’s still pretty firm, but I think it will be ready by tomorrow’s lunch. Sweet!!!

Rewind to last night, I had a salad beast after I last posted:

036

Greens, spinach, grape tomatoes, raw apple cider vinegar, nutritional yeast and an herb Sunshine burger.

In all honesty, I don’t have a ton going on today besides laundry for our trip, yoga and spin later tonight. So methinks I’m going to spend most of the afternoon by the pool. I have a boatload of emails to catch up on so I might take my laptop out there and chillax for a while 😀

Have a wonderful day!

xoxo,

G

You can also throw an apple in the brown page with the avocado (instead of the banana), which works great too!

I overslept today, too… almost two hours!

I'm always SO close to getting goat jack cheese at TJ's, but cave and get the regular. Next time, I swear.

That's my favorite kind of salad 🙂

Love kickboxing! It's such a good workout and I can't wait until my gym starts it up again.

Nice trick with the avocado, I'll have to do that since I just bought some that are definitely not ripe.

That's awesome about the banana in the brown bag, I have two green avocados at home right now, I am so going to try this!

Those key lime larabars are my absolute faves!

  12. Heather McD (Heather Eats Almond Butter) on August 4, 2009 at 2:34 pm

I love using the brown bag banana ripening trick – totally works!

Mmm, macaroons. Your house must always smell amazing with dehydrator going and the Pilot's crockpot dinners cooking. 🙂

Hope you have a wonderful and relaxing afternoon by the pool Gina!

  13. The Globetrotter on August 4, 2009 at 2:42 pm

I use brown bags for everything! Ha, works like a charm :). Don't worry too much about oversleeping sometimes our bodies just need more, enjoy the pool sweetheart!

  14. Kristi (sweet cheeks) on August 4, 2009 at 2:42 pm

Thanks for the avocado tip! I've been waiting for a few of mine to ripen, too. Salad beasts just aren't the same without a little avocado lovin'. 😀

Have fun floating today! (can I join you?)

  15. Angharad on August 4, 2009 at 2:47 pm

Ugh I wish I was by the pool!!
Thanks for the brown bag trick!

um yeah.. must be the day for sleeping in! I totally missed my alarm and woke up late! 🙁 That's my work out time, too! But I am out of work early today… so once I get the kiddo down for her nap, I'll be getting some kind of work out in!

Did not know that avocado trick! very cool!

  17. Laura W on August 4, 2009 at 2:59 pm

Thanks for the avocado tip. Yesterday was the first time in a long time that all of the avocados at the store were still hard… they're normally so mushy!

Love your motivation… if I sleep past my alarm for hot yoga, then I normally just skip it! Rushing around is probably worth how good you feel after the class!

  18. Anonymous on August 4, 2009 at 3:06 pm

Gina, have you posted the recipe for the macaroons? I can't seem to find it… I would LOVE to make those! 🙂

  19. just me on August 4, 2009 at 4:01 pm

I think you can actually do the same thing to ripen bananas…but you use potatoes or apples or something like that. 🙂 works wonders!!!

  20. Bambi on August 4, 2009 at 4:06 pm

You can also ripen fruit by putting it in a jar of rice. I have no idea how it works, but it does, it's just an indian thing I guess.
    Have fun with the pool.

  21. Paige@ Running Around Normal on August 4, 2009 at 5:18 pm

Sounds like a wonderful day! What a great idea for the avocado. I'm so trying it.

  22. Sarah (LovIN My Tummy) on August 4, 2009 at 5:18 pm

I too am a fan of the paper bag trick. I have some peaches chillin' in the brown right now.

You must be getting so excited for your trip!!!

  23. She-Fit on August 4, 2009 at 5:52 pm

Interesting about the avocado and banana!
Those macaroons look so good! I would have eaten the whole dough 🙂

  24. roseyrebecca on August 4, 2009 at 5:56 pm

I like your salad beasts! It's ok to oversleep every once in a while!!

  25. shelby on August 4, 2009 at 7:39 pm

I have an apple + avocado in a paper bag right now! It works like a charm.

I hope you had a great afternoon by the pool!

Hi there! I just started my own blog today, so I'm a newbee to the bloging world… but I just wanted to say that I love your blog, and thanks for all of the awesome workout posts!

  29. Lauren on August 4, 2009 at 8:35 pm

I've heard of that trick with the banana in the paper bag to ripen fruit faster.

I usually throw my nectarines in a brown bag for a day or two to get them nice and ripe. Nectarines always seem to be way to hard when you first buy them for some reason.

    Have a wonderfully relaxing day!

  30. HangryPants on August 4, 2009 at 8:53 pm

Good luck with packing and everything!

  31. Averie on August 4, 2009 at 9:21 pm

I just posted a homemade LaraBar recipe I've been making that's been fulfilling my Lara cravings, for much cheaper than I can buy them. And I was in Phoenix today for a day trip..you already know this, but it's a hot one in AZ right now. I hope you have a splendid adventure :))

  32. fittingbackin on August 4, 2009 at 9:59 pm

Oooh your "sludge" looks super green today! I've wanted to oversleep the past two days – grrr. I hate not feeling like I got enough sleep! 🙁 There's just not enough hours in the day!
