Spring has sprung

Hey guys! How’s your Friday going? Mine has been very bueno- I just love the weekend 🙂

Today, the pilot and I had a beautiful walk with the puppers.

They were tuckered out:

sleepy

And thristy.

thirsty

And then, a little of this happened:

Poolside lounging with high-quality literature – Chelsea Handler is a very profound author 😉

Lonchi:

Mango-raspberry smoothie (almond milk, Sun Warrior vanilla, frozen mango, frozen raspberries)

smoothie

Side salad:

mini beast

Perfect 🙂

I just got back from my training appointment and am about to pump some iron (and maybe take a Zumba class?) before hitting up the movies– the guys have a roll call tonight.

Hope you all have a wonderful night <3

xoxo,

Gina

Today’s tip: If you don’t have time for a full gym session, get more bang for your time buck by doing some intervals and supersets. Move quickly from one set to the next (with very little rest), and for cardio, try some hill or sprint intervals. Your heart rate will be up the entire time and you’ll have a super fast and efficient workout. Remember, it’s all about quality, not quantity.

2 pesos: I do want to clarifying real quickly by saying that I was shocked that the Whole Foods 365 brand is made in China, it had nothing to do with me having a prob with the quality of the food. I know 365 brand is good stuff- I love it and buy it often. I’m happy to support one of my favorite stores and the hard-working farmers in China who are responsible for the food. While I don’t have a problem with the quality of the food (certified organic is certified organic, no matter where it’s made. If it’s certified, it’s high-quality shizz), I do have a problem with the DISTANCE of the food being produced. Food that is produced overseas has to travel thousands of miles, emitting toxic transportation-related gases into the atmosphere in the process. It hurts our earth, which is why it’s important to buy local food when it’s possible. Obviously the problem in America is getting kids to choose carrot sticks instead of french fries and get active, but to those of us who are already (and fortunate to be) on a healthy path, for many people, buying local and organic food is the next step.

*Speech ovah 😉

Last call for $16 foam roller! Promo ends tonight at midnight. I’ll be making a foam roller vid with some ideas for ya’ll, too 🙂

While I love Whole Foods and the 365 brand, I do not support flying my food all the way from CHINA (!!!) to eat it. Sometimes I think it’s ridiculous to buy California oranges, it’s a long way to Florida! I try to do the best I can with my budget to buy food from local farmers and make sure it is organic or as organic as possible!

Mmm, that mango-raspberry smoothie looks delicious! Also, your breakfast cookies have changed my life. Seriously.

    • Fitnessista on March 19, 2010 at 3:59 pm

that’s awesome- i couldn’t live without the bfast cookie 🙂

VERY jealous of your poolside lounging!!

  5. Lindsey @ Sound Eats on March 19, 2010 at 3:56 pm

I don’t know how true this is, but some articles I read about this Whole Foods Organics from China controversy suggested that the food actually may not be as high quality (or even organic) because the standards and supervision of food quality overseas aren’t always the same as they are in the US. Just more interesting food for thought and things to research further!

    Have a great weekend, G. 🙂

  6. Michelle on March 19, 2010 at 4:05 pm

Thank you for clarifying what your support Gina! I completely agree that transporting food from far away is no way as awesome as eating local!! Your 2 peso’s are worth a billion to me. 🙂

P.s. i am SO jealous of your poolside lounging!!! SO jealous. And even more so, the cherry bomb…oh man. *drool*

  7. claire! on March 19, 2010 at 4:07 pm

i agree – 365 is still good stuff, especially given the price- but china is very far away. regardless, i’m still grateful to even have the types of products available that places like whole foods provide. its difficult to eat organic/natural as it is, and would be even moreso without the whole foods of the world that have it all conveniently available!!

just ma 2 cents. happy friday!!

  8. Lauren @ BIOCHEMISTA on March 19, 2010 at 4:08 pm

I am SOOOOO jealous you were near a pool today!!! It’s 70’s here in DC but I’m stuck in the labski until probably 7..waaah lol

I’m gonna try that smoothie combo this weekend since my Sun Warrior protein just came in 🙂 🙂 I also ordered their greens and love them!! Have you tried that product too??

  9. Tiffany on March 19, 2010 at 4:08 pm

A question for ya. You don’t like how far the 365 brand travels to reach our plates, but what about cacao, goji berries, Maca, etc that is also shipped from distant countries? Is that not the same thing?

    • Fitnessista on March 19, 2010 at 4:09 pm

it’s totally the same thing, but we don’t grow those products here in the states. china is the only place you can get goji berries from. tomatoes for 365 brand salsa, however, you can find right here in the united states.

Can’t wait to see the foam roller vid. I have a foam roller & love it, but only know a few stretches to do on it, but I need more. So it is perfect timing! Thanks in advance! Enjoy your weekend – you deserve it!

  11. Lauren @ Eater not a runner on March 19, 2010 at 4:16 pm

Good point on the 365 controversy, we definitely have good tomatoes growing right here in the USA 🙂

  12. Mama Pea on March 19, 2010 at 4:18 pm

I read my last Chelsea book in 2 hours. It’s really challenging reading, but oh so necessary.

  13. brittany on March 19, 2010 at 4:44 pm

My foam roller kills me! The very first time I used it I was so close to crying I can’t wait to see new ways to use it, right now I just pretty much wing it 😉

sounds like a perfect day to me! wish i was lounging by the pool 🙁

  15. Nicole @ Making Good Choices on March 19, 2010 at 4:51 pm

wow I had no idea it was made in China, that is a ridiculously long distance to travel to get here! Question, where do you buy your organic meats for the pilot? just the reg food store or do you wait to go to Whole Foods?

    • Fitnessista on March 19, 2010 at 5:10 pm

i’ll buy them at whole foods when we go to jax or orlando and freeze them, or pick them up at publix (greenwise brand)

  16. Kristin (Cook, Bake and Nibble) on March 19, 2010 at 4:57 pm

I love the spring! And Chelsea Handler is hilarious, profound or not 😉

my day has been sorta productive, doing some cleaning. Not sure what the weekend has planned, but i doubt anything exciting.

  19. Lisa on March 19, 2010 at 5:10 pm

A little tid bit that most people are unaware of: “organic” products, even those that are “certified,” are not necessarily truly organic.

Often, products labelled “natural” “organic” or “certified organic” differ very little from genetically engineered products in that they contain high levels of pesticides and fertilizers due to farming practices. Regulation of these products in the United States is very lax, and in many circumstances, actually allows for heavy pesticide use to occur.

There are a lot of scholarly articles on the topic, but for an enjoyable and easy read, I’d check out “The Way We Eat: Why Our Food Choices Matter” by Peter Singer.

    Sounds like a great day!

  21. Morgan @ Healthy Happy Place on March 19, 2010 at 5:46 pm

Agree with you 100% on the 365 Brand. Doesn’t Whole Foods promote buying locally grown foods?

    • Fitnessista on March 19, 2010 at 6:26 pm

      yup 🙂

  22. Kelly on March 19, 2010 at 5:56 pm

Pool time?!?! Jealous! I plan on laying out in my backyard tomorrow but sadly no pools open up here till Memorial Day.

  23. La on March 19, 2010 at 6:30 pm

I have plans to do an overnight breakfast cookie tonight. Thought I’d let you know 😉
Can’t wait to get my foam roller!!
    Have a great weekend

My mom has Chelsea’s books but I haven’t read them. I may have to swipe them soon! Have a good night!

  25. Natalie on March 19, 2010 at 6:46 pm

Hola Fitnessista! I don’t know about the 365 brand, but products shipped long distances CAN be better for the environment, IF they are grown in an environment where they require less human intervention (e.g. beef grown where the cows can live outdoors all year round, crops grown where they don’t need irrigation). Shipping requires very little fuel and is pretty environmentally friendly — there’s some big lobby groups that don’t want you to know that. The biggest fuel consumption in getting your food to you, happens as you’re driving your groceries home from the supermarket.
    Rant over, haha 😉

  26. Jessie on March 19, 2010 at 6:47 pm

I agree on the Whole Foods deal but here’s an interesting tidbit that I found out from my husband (a mechanic). Any vehicle/vessel used for the transportation of these foods created more pollutants being produced than it ever will during it’s entire “lifetime” of use. Meaning my Jeep that has over 125,000 miles on it polluted the air more when it was made than it has since 1997.

  27. Kathy on March 19, 2010 at 7:06 pm

I am growing less and less happy with Whole Foods all the time and this info about 365 is just adding to it. Prices have gone up at the 3 near me A LOT in the last few months…maybe it is the higher fuel prices given 365 comes from so far away. Interestingly my local grocery store has just tripled it’s organic / vegan section and the prices are about 40% less on the SAME things. And there is a new Trader Joe’s opening. I may drop Whole Foods all together soon, I hope. People around here call it Whole Paycheck. Sad.

  28. Danielle (Coffee Run) on March 19, 2010 at 7:08 pm

Is that…Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang?? I’ve been dying to get that book 😀

I was also a little surprised that WF is shipping its products from China!

  29. Mandiee on March 19, 2010 at 9:37 pm

wow, i didn’t know 365 is produced in china! i think you’re totally right that being healthy is the first step, but that once you’re there, it’s important to look into other things you can do to help. we only have one world after all so let’s treat it with some love!

    have a lovely day!

I just started a blog and I was hoping you could take a look!
    http://livelurvrun.blogspot.com/
I wouldn’t mind losing some weight but that’s not my goal. I just want to stay healthy and be happy with my body. That’s always something I’ve struggled with but with this blog I hope that it will keep my honest and committed to my goals.

and also I love your blog! You are such an inspiration! (and I gotta say that breakfast cookie is incredible!!!)

    • Fitnessista on March 20, 2010 at 6:01 pm

      thanks so much girl!
i’m excited to check out your blog 🙂

  31. Rebecca on March 20, 2010 at 1:11 am

Unfortunately..being certified organic does NOT guarantee fair wages or the humane treatment of animals. It also doesn’t necessarily support sustainability. Food Alliance Certified does guarantee both.

    http://foodalliance.org/

  32. Heather on March 20, 2010 at 8:22 am

Yeah, it’s kinda crazy that all that good food that is produced and shipped from the other side of the world could be grown in the USA and not travel so far.
Also, I wonder if more people would buy second hand or buy only American brands, if they took the same attitude with all their foreign made clothes and shoes.
There is probably far more injustice to the human population in making all our fancy clothes. I’m sure Kathy Lee knows more about that than me though 🙂

  33. Janice down the veggie road on March 21, 2010 at 4:01 pm

That is interesting as I do half my grocery shopping at whole foods but do not buy that many of their 365 products but I also agree with your points of view on that it is so far away and also just because our country’s organic regulations prob don’t match up with what another country might produce etc……thanks for sharing that with us….. we all need to stay informed more 🙂
