Squeaky Clean, yo

Hi guys! How are ya? Did anyone do anything fun this weekend?? We were spring cleaning machines. Not exactly fun, but necessary- we’re almost done.

I even made my own cleaning solution!

soap

Since we’re in the process of ridding our house of all chemicals, I mixed up that bad johnny after some Google research. Juice of 2 lemons, warm water, baking soda and some Greenworks liquid soap. Worked like a charm 😀

The pilot had a long week at work, so I thought I’d be a nice wife and make him some pancakes for bfast.

pancakes

I followed this recipe for the batter, then he cooked them up sprinkled with organic blueberries and also had eggs and organic turkey.

You’ll never guess what I had…

choc cherry bomb

Chocolate cherry bomb. ‘Twas so bomb 😀

We cleaned like maniacs (and packed up a TON of clothes for Goodwill), and for dinner I was stoked to make Ina’s Swordfish with Tomatoes and Capers.

I pan-seared the swordfish with sea salt and pepper, then baked it off in the oven.

Then worked on the sauce:

With our meal, we had my favorite salad with roasted beets, shallot, Organicville balsamic, honey goat cheese (!) and organic greens.

With the swordfish and sauce.

Quite the face-rocking feast.

Today we’re steaming the carpets and then our casa will be squeaky clean for spring 😀

As far as workouts go, I’m going to take one more easy day before getting back in the full swing of things tomorrow. Taking a week of rest has been crazy difficult for me –I haven’t taken this much time off in years- but I know it’s the smart thing to do. I CAN’T wait to Zumba tomorrow, do some power yoga and RUN!! I really think that taking time off can light a little fire in the motivation department 🙂

Have a happy Sunday!

See ya tonight <3

xoxo,

Gina

Upcoming: A breakfast cookie video and (finally) a new workout plan! We’ve been waiting to launch the new Iron Pumping plan until Caitlin’s triathlon was over- which she’s rocking out right now 🙂

Taking time off always puts a super power boost in my workouts afterwards. I love being more than extremely pumped to get back to it also. It’s outrageously fun and not just working out 🙂

  2. Kerry Marie on March 14, 2010 at 11:16 am

Chocolate cherry bomb sounds and looks delicious!!

  3. Tyler Ramey on March 14, 2010 at 11:39 am

Ina Garten = almost GaGa’esque lurv.

I sometimes watch her show just to drool between meals. Tell me you have seen her make her “outrageous” brownies?!?! By outrageous, she obviously means instantaneous heart attack, but it is fun to watch and salivate over!

Can’t wait to hear about the new training plan!

  5. Danielle (Coffee Run) on March 14, 2010 at 11:43 am

I love that you made your own cleaner SANS chemicals 😀

p.s. I made some raw oatmeal this morning (copying you) and it was great! Super chewy

  6. Ange on March 14, 2010 at 11:51 am

I made up a couple batches of cleaners a few months ago and they work great!

Can’t wait to see the bfast cookie vid!!

  7. Heather on March 14, 2010 at 11:54 am

PLEASE come clean my house! Looks like a 500 ring circus bkew up in here followed by about 1000 tornados. I hate cleaning! lol.

That swordfish looks yumballz! Hope your knee is in top Zumba form by tamale!

  8. Rachael on March 14, 2010 at 11:56 am

I’ve never had swordfish before but it looks really good. I usually make salmon but that gets boring after a while!

p.s. I posted about those Chia/Flax seeds (FitFlax) that I asked you about on Twitter. Thanks for posting about chia…I’m really happy with it 🙂 http://bit.ly/a0N6EJ

That salad looks TOO good! I agree that taking some time off is a great motivation booster 🙂

  10. Jenny on March 14, 2010 at 12:14 pm

    You’re such a good wife!

  11. Jenn on March 14, 2010 at 12:21 pm

Do you ever worry about mercury levels in fish?

    • Fitnessista on March 14, 2010 at 12:49 pm

of course! i try to buy my fish from the best sources (that was wild caught swordfish from whole foods) and vary the types that i have. also, i try not to have it more than a few times each week (which is hard, because i love it so much)

  12. Mara @ What's For Dinner? on March 14, 2010 at 12:27 pm

Would you like to come and help us clean our house?? I hate cleaning…

    • Fitnessista on March 14, 2010 at 12:49 pm

of course! i’d love to be your little maid.. i take payments in the form of baigan bhartha, haha 🙂

  13. La on March 14, 2010 at 12:46 pm

I might be secretly obsessed with you+the Pilot. You guys are so cute.

Your own cleaning solution???? Gosh you are just in time, it’s about that time for me to start spring cleaning. I might have to try this. How did it work?

    • Fitnessista on March 14, 2010 at 12:50 pm

      hahah thanks girl <3
the solution worked great! my only thing was that i put a little too much soap in it, but it worked (and smelled!) wonderful

  14. M on March 14, 2010 at 12:51 pm

I make my own cleaning mixes as well!! I think Kristen’s Raw was the first to inspire me way back…. Could you possibly be making the switch because you are getting ready for a mini-pilot? Hmmmm Fitnessista?!!! ;-D

    • Fitnessista on March 14, 2010 at 12:59 pm

      i’m not sayin’ anything 🙂

  15. M on March 14, 2010 at 1:12 pm

    Hey again Gina!
So I am trying out your food tracking trick you taught us a little while ago– and I am trying to figure out how you decide what constitutes certain foods as a C, F, N, or P. Like for example my smoothie this morning had a TBL raw cacao powder in it…. how do you decide what this is? I know the obvious things like fish is a protein and almond butter is a fat, but what do you do for these? Thanks girl 🙂

    • Fitnessista on March 14, 2010 at 1:14 pm

      cacao powder is neutral 🙂

      • M on March 14, 2010 at 4:50 pm

Thank you sweetie 🙂 Do you figure it out by looking at the fat/carb/protein ratio? Or you keeping this a secret?

        • Fitnessista on March 14, 2010 at 5:19 pm

i’m keeping the actual method on the dl until someone will publish me 🙂

          • M on March 14, 2010 at 9:11 pm

I had a feeling, and I think that’s smart! Hope you don’t mind if I ask here and there about randoms that I’m not sure about like the cocoa powder 🙂 xo

          • Fitnessista on March 15, 2010 at 8:43 am

of course i don’t mind! ask away 🙂

  16. Lauren @ Eat, Drink, and Be Hopeful on March 14, 2010 at 1:32 pm

Ohh Ina Garten is just so amazing right? I made a sicilian style swordfish a while back and it was face rockin’ so I bet this was just like that since it sounds similar. I can’t believe you make you’re own cleaners. What a great idea!! But I do have a question-where do you find info on how harmful regular cleaners are. I am a clean freak and use a lot of 409 and clorox, but am I damaging my health? Can you advise? thanks!

  17. kristi (sweet cheeks) on March 14, 2010 at 1:33 pm

Taking a break from exercise definitely helps with my motivation. After a couple of no exercise days, I am ITCHING to move. I love it!

  18. Jessica @ How Sweet It Is on March 14, 2010 at 1:43 pm

I love swordfish! That looks delicious – I’ve never tried cooking it on my own.

  19. Run Sarah on March 14, 2010 at 2:11 pm

Can’t wait to see the bfast cookie video – I need help getting the right consistency! Your cleaning solution sounds awesome too.

  20. LisaG on March 14, 2010 at 2:53 pm

Glad your swordfish turned out yum. I was watching foxnews this a.m. and they were talking about the VS controversy you posted the other day; about how it could affect young girls and women.

  21. Heather @ Get Healthy With Heather on March 14, 2010 at 3:39 pm

How come your house is going chemical free?

  22. Heather (Heather's Dish) on March 14, 2010 at 4:22 pm

spring cleaning is the best…you gotta love the way it feels when it’s over and everything’s amazing! i love Ina Garten 🙂 she’s definitely the fave on food network 🙂

  23. K from ksgoodeats on March 14, 2010 at 5:21 pm

Making your own cleaning products is kind of fun! I’ve made my own coffee pot cleaner before – smelled awful since I had to brew vinegar through it but it worked!

Those pancakes look D-vine. I’m not craving some! Good for you for taking time off when your body needed it, that’s important 🙂

  24. Vicky on March 14, 2010 at 5:43 pm

Hey Gina! Glad you’re able to zumba again! I just got my B1 certification yesterday 🙂 I have a totally unrelated question, but something I’ve been meaning to ask you…. for your eggwhite puffs, or for any recipes in which you use eggwhites alone– what do you do with the yolks? or do you purchase eggwhites only? if so, do you recommend a particular brand? thanks so much!!

    • Fitnessista on March 14, 2010 at 6:04 pm

      hey vicky!
that’s so cool- ahhh i love zumba 🙂
the egg yolks go… down the sink. i’m a waster, i know. i don’t trust the carton egg whites though

  25. Paige @ Running Around Normal on March 14, 2010 at 6:10 pm

That time off is doing major things for your body, I’m sure:) I made my husband pancakes for breakfast today, too 😀

  26. Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman on March 14, 2010 at 6:42 pm

I so much prefer non-chemical cleaners. Before, when I used the heavy duty stuff to clean everything, my lungs would ache after cleaning. Then one day the bottoms of my feet started to burn, and I decided we needed to quit the chemicals and use something else. I love Shaklees products for general cleaning. Considering how much you actually use after mixing with water, they’re ridiculously cheap!

  27. Leah on March 14, 2010 at 6:51 pm

I bought honey goat cheese by accident once. Best accident ever! That stuff is amazing.

    • Fitnessista on March 14, 2010 at 7:22 pm

hahah don’t you love when that happens?!

  28. kalli@fitandfortysomething on March 14, 2010 at 7:34 pm

glad you have taken time off even though it has been hard. seems like you had a great day! love to get a bunch of stuff done 🙂

  29. maggie b on March 14, 2010 at 9:04 pm

how do you roast your beets??? they look so good.

    • Fitnessista on March 15, 2010 at 8:44 am

usually at 375 for a half hour with olive oil, salt and pepper.. i cheated with those and used canned- they didn’t have fresh beets at the store. so i plopped them out of the can and heated through with seasonings for about 20 minutes

  30. Allison @ Food For Healing on March 14, 2010 at 9:25 pm

i wish i could have cleaned, but with the funeral, there wasn’t much time. Hopefully soon i will get a good cleaning in!

  31. Carolyn @ lovinlosing.com on March 15, 2010 at 12:10 pm

I need to eat more fish, but I hate the way it makes the house smell and the husband isn’t a huge fan. It seems like every time I buy it I let it go bad because I never feel like eating it.

    • Fitnessista on March 15, 2010 at 12:20 pm

      send it to MEEEEE! hahaha
