Teeth-sticking good

Hey everyone! How’s your night goin?? Things are bueno over here but that’s just because I am no longer stinky –I felt fancy and showered- and am finally in jammies after the Monday insanity.

For lunch today, I was meandering through my friend Gena’s blog and discovered that she posted a recipe that I had all of the ingredients on hand for: Raw peanut noodles. I knew I had to try it 🙂

The only kicker is that I scaled the recipe way down, nixed the olive oil, used a splash of the sesame oil, and added in a tbs of almond butter.

032

Holy deliciousness.

The zucchini noodles were perfectly coated in the delicious sauce and I added chopped carrots, grape tomatoes and diced red bell pepper.

It was beautiful. Thanks for the scrumptious recipe, Gena 😀

033

Did some stuff around the casa, trained a client and then came home to grab a mango before going to the base gym to teach.

035

I’ve gotten quite a few questions about how I cut my mangoes to get so much meat. I used a vegetable peeler to get the skin off and then hold it upright and slice next to the pit. Then I do the other side and each side, as close to the pit as I can get. Whatever I’m not able to cut off, I munch before throwing said pit into the trash 😉

Spin and Zumba were a BLASTY (packed house! looooove it), and I ate a little Ekekiel tortilla with some Amy’s frijoles smeared on there and some greens.

034

The last training appointment of the night was my funny quotes lady, who didn’t have anything too comical today, but a GREAT SUCCESS (in Borat voice) story. She’s gone down 2 pants sizes and 2 shirt sizes since we started working out. AMAZING! I’m so so so proud of her and the fact that she said that was all the motivation she needed to keep going, and thanked me repeatedly, made my night. Sometimes I find myself thinking about the corporate ladder I could be climbing, but its moments like that which turn my entire perspective around.

Tonight, I tried a new type of carb/energy replacement in between teaching spin and Zumba:

027

I bought these a while ago in Orlando, tried them on a run and found them wayyyy too sticky to eat while I was running. I’m out of my favorite Honey Stingers, so I took a pack of the Luna Moons to see how they would do in between aerobics classes. They were still SUPER sticky, but I think the Pomegranate flavor is pleasant and it was much easier to eat these while I had a couple of minutes instead of while I was running. The best part is that I didn’t feel too full or sick while I was teaching my second class (which is a bonus because some of the energy/carb gels/gummies make me ill) and I’ll definitely be using these until I buy another 12 pack of my beloved stingers.

Endurance athletes out there: what’s your carb/energy replacement of choice??

Well I’m off to read your lovely blogs and then call it a night.

Kickboxing with Jeni in the morning 😀

xoxo,

G

Gena's recipe is faaaantastic, as always – holy yum!

  2. allijag on August 3, 2009 at 10:33 pm

my running store carries a line called "Carb Boom" – they have little packets of gummies – they are by far the best out there (Ive tried the luna moons, clif shot blox, and gu chomps as well) – the Carb Boom Chews are TDF!!! the citrus flavor is my favorite!

Congrats on great classes today! And I think what you do with your training clients is amazing and you should definitely be so proud of the healthy example you set for each one of them. I think a good trainer can truly change someone's life 🙂

Wow, Gena's recipe looked good, and so does your version!! It's great to have a career that you love. I'm the same way with mine, sometimes, I wish I had a "normal" job, but I don't think it would be nearly as much fun.

  5. MarathonVal on August 3, 2009 at 10:55 pm

I used to love Sport Jelly Bellies, but haven't found that at my local store recently so I'm experimenting with other stuff…. I haven't tried them yet but the friends I run with rave about Clif Chocolate and Espresso flavors!

  6. katherine on August 3, 2009 at 10:55 pm

    Another successful gena recipe!

I'm still experimenting with exercise fuel. Lately, I've found GUs upset my stomach and I don't enjoy Zingers, though they are much more natural. I tried Clif Shot Blox this weekend and they're good, but very large! I would love to check out the Luna Moons and I've got a pack of Sport Beans to try this coming weekend too!

Those raw peanut noodles look fantastic! Never seen anything like that before 🙂 yummy yummy!

I am a runner and I always make sure that I am stocked up with it. It was on sale this week, hence, not being able to fit anything else in the fridge!!! I do water it down a bit as I find it makes my mouth sticky while I am running.

  9. Averie on August 3, 2009 at 11:14 pm

I dig the vegetable peeler tip on mangoes. A paring knife just isn't the same, is it. And with all that juice, slippage happens.

For endurance, I use homemade LaraBars that I am in the process of posting on my blog and will have up tomorrow. Basically a date/dried fruit, nut, seed mix I blend up and roll into logs. Yum and they work and arent too sticky.

Double whammy feel good for us blog readers re:funny-quotes-lady, because her GREAT SUCCESS (hahahaha) is inspirational, plus the fact that you are doing what you want to do is inspirational.

My carb replacement of choice is a handful of figs, though that doesn't really help on the electrolyte score. I know some people who swear by Pedialyte (yep, the stuff for when the wee ones….)

How often a week do ya think you need to workout a body part for it to at least maintain its strength? I aim to get everything in twice a week, but most weeks I have at least one body part that only gets hit once…like delts or lats or something, that is to say, something that gets worked in other movements to be sure, but that I might only specifically target once a week. Is that enough ya reckon?

Also, any more thoughts on whether or not you're going to bend over the Disney marathon and make it your bitch? For if you do indeed decide to race it, that is the only outcome I can possibly forsee.

  11. ttfn300 on August 3, 2009 at 11:35 pm

definitely too sticky 🙂 i like the clif shot blocks, but i haven't tried a ton…

those noodles again, need to try!!

  12. heyitstay on August 3, 2009 at 11:41 pm

I agree, I can't do the chew factor thing while running (clif blocks, luna moons, jelly beans, etc). I usually take gels/gus with me and sometimes 1/2 of a PB&jam sandwich to eat on a walking break (since I get physically hungry on 3 hour runs!)

Can't wait to try out that recipe!!

  13. Fallon on August 3, 2009 at 11:46 pm

I love your blog! I recently came across it last night and have been hooked ever since. I use to be a hard core calorie counter as well and realized it not a way to live! Like you wrote it hard to give it up. I'm doing better now and your blog has been so inspiring. This will help me to get back on my bandwagon and off this long plateau I've been on. I look forward to more of your blog posts! I've already learned so much.

  14. HangryPants on August 4, 2009 at 12:07 am

I am also so proud of funny quotes lady.

The zucchini noodles look so delicious!

I am envious that your mango looks really firm. How do you pick them?

Oh and I use Sharkies for long runs. I really didn't want to use anything, tried these and they worked okay so I've never used anything else. They are organic and I get them at Target. I am really interested in trying some of the recipes for fruit bites that Brendan Brazier has though.

  15. Girl on Raw on August 4, 2009 at 12:30 am

I was thinking of making the same recipe sometime this week. Gena has some GREAT ideas doesn't she?

Don't worry about not climbing the corporate ladder. You would not have as much time for what you love (to work out) and you are giving back x a zillion. Keep it up!

    😀

  16. AnnQ on August 4, 2009 at 12:42 am

I've wondered about the Luna gummies! The ones I've used have been the Clif Bloks, which I really like 🙂

  17. Lainie on August 4, 2009 at 1:28 am

I agree, the stingers are the best! Haven't tried those moons yet…pomegranate sounds good though.

Your variation of Gena's recipe looks delicious!

  18. wholebodylove on August 4, 2009 at 2:14 am

It must be so fulfilling to have a job that allows you to be such a positive influence. I was kinda looking forward to a funny quote though 😉

  19. Emily Eats on August 4, 2009 at 2:21 am

I liked the look of Gena's recipe also and am hoping to find some of the chick pea miso you mentioned recently to sub in to it 🙂
    Have a great day!

  20. Ada on August 4, 2009 at 5:56 am

Gena's recipe looks so good, I really want to try it soon! I haven't come across the Honey Stingers yet, but if they're better than Luna Moons, they must be quite good:) I usually fuel using clif shot blocks or luna moons but if I don't have those around simple toast with nut butter does the trick;)

  21. Erica on August 4, 2009 at 6:51 am

Hooray for packed classes and successful clients! You are doing such an amazing job with all of your teaching/ training! You rock! I am considering cutting back my hours at work and focusing more on teaching/health. We'll see if I actually do it, but I really want to ! What a yummy bowl on noodles. Huge fan of any sauce with nut butter in it!

  22. Andrea (Off Her Cork) on August 4, 2009 at 8:00 am

Clif Bars make these fruit roll thingies for kids. I found them to be great for runs! I cut the stick into bite size portions and carry them during my run. They aren't as sticky as other stuff and are easily chewed so they go down fast.

  23. Lauren on August 4, 2009 at 8:19 am

I like Nekot crackers for the longer runs/events. I could probably make a more healthy version at home, but I generally just go with the prepackaged ones.

  24. shelby on August 4, 2009 at 8:39 am

I need to make that noodle recipe!!

  25. Pam (Highway to Health) on August 4, 2009 at 9:03 am

I haven't gotten into really long runs yet but I have been wanting to try to Luna Moons. Thanks for the review!

  26. seesaraheat on August 4, 2009 at 9:03 am

I loved those moons too, except for their extreme stickiness, but they tasted great!

I'm glad you had a inspiring experience with your client 🙂

  27. Red Head, Yellow Dog on August 4, 2009 at 9:12 am

I've never been able to eat anything while doing long runs (stomach does NOT approve) so I always get it in liquid form. I've found diluted yellow powerade to work best for me!

  28. Paige@ Running Around Normal on August 4, 2009 at 9:17 am

Thanks for the Luna moons review! I have these and planned on eating them on a long run. Thanks for letting us know how sticky they are!

  29. Art Historical Runner on August 4, 2009 at 9:26 am

I agree, the Luna Moons are too chewy to eat while working out. My favorite energy replacement "snacks" are Clifshots. While marathon training, they helped my energy levels immensely. I also like how the carb source is organic brown rice syrup and not maltodextrin. When I'm running for over two-hours, I also incorporate ClifBloks for something more substantial feeling (I especially love the margarita flavor with extra sodium. yum!)

  30. Annie D. on August 4, 2009 at 9:28 am

I'm going to have to try that when I cut my mangoes!!

  31. Laura W on August 4, 2009 at 9:34 am

For what it's worth, the corporate ladder (specifically finance, in this case) doesn't always take you up. I'm only 25 and I've already gone up once & down once. It's kinda a "grass is greener on the other side" type thing… but that's just my opinion! I often think that what your work seems to be more fulfilling since you're helping so many people!

  32. Amanda on August 4, 2009 at 10:01 am

I haven't tried many, but liked the taste of Clif Shot Blox in Orange. They were pretty sticky while I was running, though .. I was a little afraid I was going to choke!!

  33. brandi on August 4, 2009 at 10:06 am

    that's awesome about your client!

and the almond noodles look great

  34. jjhampton on August 4, 2009 at 10:18 am

That peanut dish look marvelous!!! I see as my lunch in the very near future :). Man you teach a lot of class. I was there I would take all your classes. Well, except zumba. No dancing for me 🙂

    ~Justine

  35. Krista on August 4, 2009 at 10:24 am

We cut our mangoes the same but yours look way better than mine ever do! 🙂

  36. K from ksgoodeats on August 4, 2009 at 10:25 am

GREAT SUCCESS, indeed 😀 Congrats!! That's one thing I love about coaching is when my students finally achieve something they've been working hard at. I'm a proud mama! Those noodles look absolutely fantastic!

  37. Diana on August 4, 2009 at 10:58 am

YAAAY I'm so excited to try the peanut noodle recipe! I was telling Gena that I was trying to come up with a raw pad thai-ish dish in my head pretty much just as she posted that! Thank God. 🙂 And thank you for the mango-slicing tip. Not that I cut mangoes often (Gasp! Must change), but they have always baffled and frustrated me. No more!

  38. Veganissexy on August 4, 2009 at 11:22 am

oooh I saw that recipe too and want to give it a try on some shredded broccoli slaw and cabbage since I don't have a spiralizer. Yum!

  39. caronae on August 4, 2009 at 11:41 am

I do a lot of looonnnggg runs, and I usually use gus, but I find that dried fruit and larabars (as long as you eat a bite or two at a time, not all at once) work quite well!

  40. KiwiAtHeart on August 4, 2009 at 11:51 am

My fav while on long runs are the Cliff Shot Blocks. I think it's the cranberry flavor I like the best. Yeah, they're large and chewy, but when I'm running 18+ miles I don't mind slowing down to a walk for 1 minute while I eat these and guzzle some water.

  41. Menden @ Skinny Menny on August 4, 2009 at 12:21 pm

Mmm Gena's recipe looks delicious! I love reading the stories about your clients…I'm happy to read about "funny quotes" lady's success 🙂
