that one guy’s bday + weekend adventures

Hi! Happy Monday! Hope you had a wonderful and relaxing weekend.

Sun burst

We spent ours celebrating the Pilot’s bday!

(the famous dump cake)

It started off with an amazing dinner at Stone Brewing in Liberty Station. As expected, they had an incredible beer selection, in addition to house wines and fantastic food.

Stone brewing

It was too dark to get a good pic, but they have fabulous outdoor garden seating with huge boulders (“Stone” brewing. I got it. Ha.), fire pits, and built-in space heaters. It was a really unique spot, and we had no idea it existed in Liberty Station. We venture out there fairly often and there are tons of restaurants and fun shops; I feel like we always discover something new! We’ll definitely be back.

Saturday, we had a day of free classes at the gym, so I taught a short Zumba class and took BodyCombat. I’ve only tried it twice, but it may be one of my favorite Les Mills formats. It’s always enjoyable to unleash the inner ninja. The choreography matches the music perfectly, and I especially loved the capoeira elements.

That night, we got to get a little fancypants.

Me and tom

The Pilot had a formal event for work, so we enjoyed a lovely dinner, shenanigans with friends, and dancing.

Ball pic

(I rented my dress and necklace from Rent the Runway. In the past, I haven’t had the best experience with them -especially because I’m short and you need to size up for designer pieces, so nothing fit me- but was really happy this past time.  They have a new way to narrow down the selection according to body type, so I was able to choose a dress that worked. It was nice to avoid spending $$$ for a dress to wear one time.)

Party hostesses, take note: the only centerpiece we really need for the holiday season.

Dessert tower

Dessert tower > flowers

We had a blast with everyone and it was great to meet some of the wives who live in the area, too.

Sunday was an OrangeTheory date with a friend (thanks for meeting up with me, Ryane!), errands, and a stop at the dog Halloween festival, complete with contests and a costume parade. I’m pretty sure there’s nothing better than a dog in a Halloween costume, even though I’m sure Bella would vehemently disagree.

Butterscotch, in her lovely peacock costume:

Nacho, in his fancy taco getup:

and we also had to participate in the doggy kissing booth.

This morning it’s back to the usual teaching schedule, and recipe testing extravaganza for a fun project I’m working on.

What did you do this weekend?

Are you dressing your pet up for Halloween??

xoxo

Love that dress! Totally forgot about rent the runway…I need to hit that up for an upcoming event.

We always dress up our dog as Chewbacca — he already looks the part so it is perfect and hilarious.

  2. Chelsea @ TableForOne on October 27, 2014 at 7:22 am

Beautiful dress! I have never heard of rent the runway before. I will definitely be keeping that in the back of my mind.

  3. Amy S on October 27, 2014 at 7:22 am

Your Rent the Runway dress and necklace look gorgeous! I’ve actually had pretty good luck with them, although I’ve only rented short cocktail dresses before. It really is an amazing service, though! I’m only 5’1, so I’m not sure how I’d do with a long dress rental…maybe if I wore 4 inch heels! LOL…anyway, glad your rental turned out so well!

  4. Britt@MyOwnBalance on October 27, 2014 at 7:23 am

That dress looks great! I love Rent the Runway. It’s so useful for wedding season and company parties. I do like that you can get two sizes sent to you just in case.

  5. Ashley @ A Lady Goes West on October 27, 2014 at 7:29 am

You look lovely at the event! I am in Florida visiting my family and went to an engagement party on Saturday, which was soooo fun! Now I’m soaking up some sun before I head back to California tomorrow. No pets for me, but if I had one I’d definitely dress him/her up! 🙂

  6. Amanda on October 27, 2014 at 7:34 am

You look great! Agree with you on Body Combat – I try to take it once a week, it’s easily my favorite workout! So much fun and kicks my butt!

  7. Jessie R on October 27, 2014 at 7:43 am

Looks like it was a fantastic weekend, relaxing and fancy! You both look so great!

I spent time at the dog park, raiding the clearance rack for end of summer sales, and a few good workouts. I almost got our corgi a giraffe costume, which would be terribly ironic… since his legs are so short ;)…. but decided not too.

  8. Lauren @ The Bikini Experiment on October 27, 2014 at 7:45 am

You look like a beautiful couple at the black tie event! My weekend was low key, and I saw Gone Girl. Great movie!

  9. Tara | Treble in the Kitchen on October 27, 2014 at 7:50 am

You look so great in that dress! I have been tempted to do rent the runway, but ALWAYS afraid of the sizing. I’m typically a bit taller than most of the girls trying things on, so it makes it hard to visualize on myself.

  10. Erin @ Her Heartland Soul on October 27, 2014 at 7:51 am

Omg I love those dogs! I wish Punkin would let me dress him up! I got him a sailor costume last year and it did not go over well. 😉

And you look beautiful in your dress! I’m glad the Pilot had a good birthday!

  11. Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries on October 27, 2014 at 7:53 am

yes, it’s always fun to get out of yoga pants haha 🙂

  13. Heather @ Housewife Glamour on October 27, 2014 at 7:56 am

You look gorgeous! I’ve never tried Rent the Runway, but I’ve heard about it. This might urge me to give it a go. Happy Birthday to The Pilot 🙂 Those doggie costumes are too cute!

    • Fitnessista on October 27, 2014 at 4:10 pm

thank you, lovely friend! miss you and hope your week is going well!

  14. Amber @ Busy, Bold, Blessed on October 27, 2014 at 8:14 am

You guys look amazing all dressed up! I love it 🙂 I’ve never used rent the runway because I am such a huge believer in trying something on before I purchase it… I’d be scared the dress would come (even in a few sizes) and just not be quite right. OMG dogs in Halloween costumes are so adorable 🙂

  15. Megan @ Skinny Fitalicious on October 27, 2014 at 8:21 am

Where was Rent the Runway when I went to high school dances and sorority socials in college? I spent so much mulla on dresses. Oh the joys of getting old!

    • Fitnessista on October 27, 2014 at 4:09 pm

RIGHT?! it would have been a lifechanger. thankfully, i always magically found my dress on super sale/clearance, but still!

  16. Carrie (This Fit Chick) on October 27, 2014 at 8:29 am

AHHA the costumes are adorable! I love the dump cake– I would gobble that right up!

  17. Hilary on October 27, 2014 at 8:38 am

Those dog costumes are adorable! I so want to dress my puppy up as a lion, he’s a golden retriever so it seems perfect but we missed the pet parade so we might just have to make our own come Friday!

    • Fitnessista on October 27, 2014 at 4:07 pm

      awww i love that idea!

  18. Linda @ The Fitty on October 27, 2014 at 8:45 am

    I don’t have a doggy. 🙁 And I don’t think I can be anything for halloween, as I don’t have a costume!

  19. april on October 27, 2014 at 9:07 am

you look so gorgeous! i’ve never tried rent the runway, but i’ll check it out if i ever need a dress for a formal event.

those halloween dog costumes are the cutest things ever, but unfortunately, both of my dogs refuse to wear costumes (or outfits of any kind). instead, they just start chewing on the fabric and end up ruining it. lol oh well… 🙂

  20. Katie on October 27, 2014 at 9:07 am

You looked beautiful! I have rented a dress form there once and loved it! I like that you can get a designer dress for wayyyy cheaper if you need one for a fancy event!

    Happy belated birthday to Tom!

    Happy week to you! <3

    • Katie on October 27, 2014 at 9:07 am

      *from typo!

Happy Birthday to the pilot! Thanks for the Rent the Runway site, I have a wedding in April and I will definitely be checking them out. And you two look good in your fancypants 😉

    Cute Halloween puppies!

  22. Caitlin @ Happy 'n' Hungry on October 27, 2014 at 9:26 am

My husband and I tackled some Halloween activities this weekend, including carving pumpkins. I love Halloween so much! Our pooch, Anna, will definitely dress up this year. She’s been a hot dog and a bumblebee in the past, and we’ll probably just recycle one of the old costumes this year since she’s not making any public outings. 🙂

  23. Anita on October 27, 2014 at 9:27 am

Those little dog costumes are gorgeous!

I haven’t tried Rent the Runway yet, but it’s good to know that they have that filter option. That dress looks beautiful on you!

    Always, Anita

    • Anita on October 27, 2014 at 9:28 am

Haha– I meant to say YOU look gorgeous and the dog costumes are adorable… 😉

I actually purchased your blogging ebook last week, great tips, wanted to say thank you 🙂 I think your should do a follow up one, I am sure you are getting many extra questions after people read it.

        • Fitnessista on October 27, 2014 at 9:53 pm

thank you so much, catalina! i could definitely do a follow up one later this winter 🙂

  30. Tricia @ A Couple of Dashes on October 27, 2014 at 12:51 pm

That dump cake looks delicious! I can’t wait to try it!

I’m not dressing my dog up for Halloween this year. She doesn’t really like clothes so I decided not to torture her! I still need to come up with a costume for me though! EEEEKKKK!

    • Fitnessista on October 27, 2014 at 4:05 pm

      it’s soooo good 🙂
bell is the same way. she turns into a dog statue

      • Tricia @ A Couple of Dashes on October 27, 2014 at 4:46 pm

Bella does too! She just stands there in the dog version of a slouch until I take it off her and then she’s back to normal. It’s so funny!

  31. Lauren @ Fun, Fit and Fabulous! on October 27, 2014 at 1:11 pm

I love that dress! I doubt we’ll dress the pup up for Halloween (the costume wouldn’t last long), but Belle, my 3 month old, is going to be a bumble bee! It’s too stinkin cute! Happy Belated birthday to the Pilot!

    • Fitnessista on October 27, 2014 at 4:05 pm

      awww! so so cute 🙂

thank you so much! it’s great for special events

  33. Deborah @ Confessions of a Mother Runner on October 27, 2014 at 2:19 pm

the dress looks great on you! I’ve had trouble with Rent the runway too mostly bc of the boobs-LOL. It’s hard with the sizing.

    • Fitnessista on October 27, 2014 at 4:04 pm

hahah yes! the first size i tried on was like NO WAY

  34. Crystal on October 27, 2014 at 4:34 pm

Dammnnnn you and the Pilot look amazing all dressed up! I slept in late both days this weekend, which is rare for me, but much needed 😀 I really want to dress up our dogs for Halloween, but I’m not sure how they’d feel about it. I should just dress them in brown fabric, since they’re little turds lol

    • Fitnessista on October 27, 2014 at 9:55 pm

      aww thanks girl!
sleeping late sounds AMAZING. i took naps saturday AND sunday (still fighting off this cold thing) and it felt so luxurious. i love your dog costume idea bahah.

  35. Sne on October 27, 2014 at 6:10 pm

you look lovely! the dress look stunning on you.

  36. Kay on October 27, 2014 at 7:19 pm

Oh man, now I wish I had a dog to dress up for Halloween. I love the little taco costume. 🙂

I love the dump cake birthday cake, my boyfriend isn’t a huge cake guy, and so we put candles in a a giant baguette to celebrate. A little unorthodox, but it’s their birthday, right? Haha.

    • Fitnessista on October 27, 2014 at 9:52 pm

hahah i love that so much! when it’s your bday, you get any cake (or non-cake) you want 😉

  37. Jess on October 27, 2014 at 8:52 pm

You two are stunning! I hope Pilot had a fabulous Birthday! Looks like he did! 🙂

  38. Alex on October 28, 2014 at 3:38 am

Absolutely beautiful! You look so gorgeous. Looks like such a fun weekend. I went to the beach this weekend for a best friend’s bachelorette party. It was so nice to catch up with friends and slow down and enjoy the surf and sand.

  39. Jess on October 28, 2014 at 2:08 pm

What a beautiful dress! Thanks for reminding me that Rent the Runway exists! I have a black tie wedding coming up this winter and was stressing about how I’m going to afford a dress. I’m really short, so I guess I’ll have to see, but totally worth a shot.

Those doggie pictures are adorable. I dressed my little guy as a dragon—so freaking cute.

    • Fitnessista on October 28, 2014 at 4:12 pm

RTR would be perfect for that! it kills me to spend a lot on a one-time dress, so RTR is perfect if you can find one that works!
