The Art of Roon-Making

Hi friends! Happy Saturday! How’s your day treating ya? Did you have a fun Friday night?

The Pilot was playing zombies (some video game?) with my recovering brother, so I did what all the crazy kids do…

went to Beefcake and Noble to browse the cookbooks. 😀

A new find:

cookbook

Cooking for Isaiah—gluten and dairy free recipes!

My friend Kelly told me about this cookbook the other night, and I knew I had to have it when I saw this recipe:

donuts

Gluten and dairy-free donuts? Um, yes please.

Another bonus about this cookbook is that they’re all recipes that I would feel totally comfortable making for company or the Pilot. Some allergy-free recipes I’ve found are a little stanky and by reading the ingredients, don’t sound very delicious. I’m way excited about this one 🙂

Any awesome cookbook finds lately?

So this morning, I started off the day by perfecting the art of roon-making 🙂

Traditional blonde:

blonde

Mmmm, chocolate….

chocolate

Rows and rows of roons 🙂

roons

The Pilot said that our little temp townhouse actually feels like home because the dehydrator is humming away 😉

The above roons are for the Luon for a Cause winner (+ one reader whose bid I missed), and I’ll also be donating a batch for charity this Monday. Stay tuned if you’d like some roons 😀

After getting the roons in the dehydrator …and saving myself a lil dough… I made some b-fast:

Classic Banana Peanut Butter Protein Farina

oats

-1/4 C brown rice farina, cooked in water

-1 scoop Sun Warrior

-pinch of sea salt, lots of cinnamon

-almond milk to thin it out

-1/2 sliced banana

-dollop of peanut butter

This breakfast was SUPER filling… a little too filling perhaps. I walked around the track for today’s cardio with a giant food baby in tow 😉

We’re off to the street fair- we’ll take lots of pics!

What are you up to this Saturday?

xoxo

Gina

My man – also a military guy – is playing zombies right now too. It’s part of Call of Duty, which I just refer to as ‘Shoot ’em up’. Hope your brother has a speedy recovery!

You should totally open a food truck! There aren’t many allergy free and healthy options out there… plus everyone loves food trucks these days!

    • Fitnessista on April 2, 2011 at 5:48 pm

i told the pilot i want to open a mexi-mobile… he laughed at me, haha

      • Sammi on April 2, 2011 at 7:47 pm

You should!! That would be awesome!

  3. Sarah on April 2, 2011 at 5:49 pm

Omg that video game! Don’t be surprised if he gets insanely addicted to it & you don’t hear from him for a week. When I first read that title I thought we were getting the roon recipes!

    I love Lenka =)

Love the looks of your breakfast!

Jason plays some video game with zombies — I swear he could play all day long if he could! Darn responsibilities getting in the way 🙂

viesa says have fun at the street fair. <3

  8. Sable @ SquatLikeALady on April 2, 2011 at 6:23 pm

I love bananas and PB in breakfast foods! I just made (& posted the recipe for) a yummy banana-PB protein smoothie. I’m gonna go make another one I think 😉

    Mmmmmm roons!

  9. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on April 2, 2011 at 7:11 pm

The PB farina looks great…and filling! yum!

“the dehydrator is humming away”—LOL. I swear I have special hearing powers that are tuned into the sound of mine. My house is 4 stories (a tall/skinny urban house) but I can be on floor 4 and the dehyd is on floor 1 and i can STILL hear that thing! lol

I am surprised you don’t use a paraflexx liner for your macaroons. the first time I ever made them and didn’t use one, I had agave, maple syrup, and coconut oil liquid dripping thru the screens all into the bottom of my dehyd. It was an EPIC MESS and took me hours to clean! My house sure smelled great, but now I only dehyd things with a paraflexx liner on the bottom 🙂

All hail the beautiful Queen of Macaroon. We need to get you a crown, dear girl. No, seriously… a nice crown with chocolate macaroon tips. Good enough to eat :).

Those donuts look amazing!! Sounds like your weekend is going well so far! This morning I had an awesome workout with my trainer (legs and glutes are gonna be screeeamming tomorrow!!) and tonight I’m chilling with my roomies and playing Taboo. Low key, but that’s just what I’m craving. Have a great night Gina!

I have never been much of a roon fan myself but all of your photographs and cooking is making me rethink me position! 😛 They look delish!

  13. Faith @ lovelyascharged on April 2, 2011 at 7:28 pm

I’ve actually never tried farina…the texture looks a lot like grits though – is it close?

  14. Allison @ Food For Healing on April 2, 2011 at 7:43 pm

today was pretty relaxed, wish we could have had more sun or even just some of your ‘roons lol
i plan to get a dehydrator soon-ish (hopefully) and the first thing i intend to whip up are some ‘roons ala fitnessista!
you have a recipe posted somewhere dontcha?

  15. Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife on April 2, 2011 at 8:03 pm

Those roons look fabulous!!!! I too love browsing through cookbooks and checking out new ideas and recipes- such a fun way to spend Fri night, fo sho!

  16. Courtney @ Sweet Tooth, Sweet Life on April 2, 2011 at 8:12 pm

Your roons are phenomenal…it’s one thing looking at them, but knowing exactly how wonderful they taste? Well that’s just a whole other story. 😉

  17. Mandy (theamazonprincess) on April 2, 2011 at 8:16 pm

Uhoh….I bet you will be seeing a lot more zombie playing around the house! My boyfriend (and pretty much every guy I know) are addicted to it like crazy. But on a happier note, that cookbook seems fab and I will need to get myself a copy.

  18. Kilee on April 2, 2011 at 8:34 pm

Yum! That macaroon batter looks so good right now. I have a small kitchen that is shared with 2 other people. I moved my dehydrator into a spare room and now it doesn’t get used as much. These photos reminded me that I need to change that. Have a lovely weekend. Let me know how you like the cookbook. It looks like a good one.

  19. Cameo on April 2, 2011 at 9:44 pm

I spent Friday in airports and the air and now I am in Oregon! My guy and his brother are playing Zombies as I type. I hate it. LOATHE. They turn into total jerks and then get in fights when one of them dies. It’s actually pretty funny…the first time. I digress…the real point of my comment – I must make some of those ROONS! They sound delish. I need to get a dehydrator fo sho.

  20. Erica on April 2, 2011 at 9:46 pm

I’ve been wanting to try whole wheat farina for a while. I think i’ll pick that up and the brown rice farina as well. Your breakfast looks ultra yummy and healthy! PS love the new cookbook find.

  21. Sana on April 2, 2011 at 9:57 pm

Men and zombies, I don’t get it!!!!

    • Fitnessista on April 3, 2011 at 1:18 am

      i will never understand it

  22. Heather (heathers dish) on April 2, 2011 at 10:23 pm

I have heard fabulous things about that cookbook…I can’t wait to hear your thoughts!

  23. Katie @ Nourishing Flourishing on April 2, 2011 at 10:37 pm

I keep hearing buzz about Cooking for Isaiah, but frankly I find that most gluten-free cookbooks are way too complicated (lists of 12 different flours, etc.), with results that taste blech. I prefer simple gf baking, so I tend to use almond flour. I might go peruse this one at B + N to check out the details. 🙂

    • Fitnessista on April 3, 2011 at 1:19 am

she only uses two different flour mixes in her recipes, which look pretty simple to make the mixes

  24. Charissa on April 2, 2011 at 11:45 pm

    Those look DELISH!

Just wanted to say that I nominated you over at my blog! Thanks for being so awesome! Check it out there!

    • Fitnessista on April 3, 2011 at 1:18 am

thanks- can’t wait to check it out! 🙂

  25. Namaste Gurl on April 3, 2011 at 12:33 am

Funny how grains are often more filling than eggs, or cereal for breakfast! Love it 🙂
Hope you had a good day!

  26. Stephanie on April 3, 2011 at 8:22 am

How much do I love the fact that there’s been a zombie reference in both today AND yesterday’s posts? Haha! I really love zombies.

  27. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on April 3, 2011 at 8:33 am

I hate that feeling of working out with a food baby! The worst was when I decided to run after doing all you can eat sushi. That didn’t end well… LOL! 😛

    Those roons look delish!

    • Fitnessista on April 3, 2011 at 12:50 pm

ahhh! that sounds horrible! once the pilot ran with me after eating a giant bowl of creamy, sugary oatmeal and a cinnamon roll.. he wasn’t doing so well after that

  28. chelsey @ clean eating chelsey on April 3, 2011 at 8:52 am

That cookbook looks amazing!!! I need to go purchase one.

  29. Lynn (The Cream Filling) on April 3, 2011 at 9:36 am

I am currently on the lookout for a really good vegan cookbook. I am in dire need.

    • Fitnessista on April 3, 2011 at 12:48 pm

  31. Jenn on April 3, 2011 at 11:55 am

This is only a little creepy but I think I totally saw you at the street fair yesterday! I was with my bf who works out here from time to time and he doesn’t really know about blogs (lol) so I didn’t say anything but next time I’m here hopefully I can make it to one of your classes!

    • Fitnessista on April 3, 2011 at 12:48 pm

“playing zombies” ;P My sister’s bf loves all things zombie, but I am partial to battlefield bad company 2… on the pc. Hello … super nerd alert! HAHA

  33. Janiek on April 3, 2011 at 1:06 pm

    Hey Gina,
I rarely comment but I’m a loyal follower of your blog!
What I wanted to say: I finally realised who The Pilot reminds me of!!
It’s James Lafferty (aka Nathan Scott from One Tree Hill)!
You probably disagree because you know The Pilot’s face so well but to me, they look a lot alike. After seeing you Q&A video I couldn’t stop wondering who he reminded me of. Then the other day my sis was watching OTH and I thought, That’s IT!
Haha, anyways. Love your blog, keep on bloggin’!

    xoxo

    Janiek

  34. Gina on April 3, 2011 at 8:08 pm

Do you ever cook from Veganomicon? I’ve made about half of the recipes in the book (which is rare for me), and I’ve loved every single one! Just made the yuca quesadillas yesterday and they were phenomenal. Yum!

    • Fitnessista on April 3, 2011 at 9:53 pm

the only recipe i’ve tried is snobby joes (LURVE), but from what it sounds like i may need to invest in that cookbook!

  35. Anna L. on April 4, 2011 at 5:24 pm

Is there a recipe for your macaroons?! I’ve been looking everywhere for it, they look AWESOME!

    • Fitnessista on April 4, 2011 at 9:24 pm

yes… it’s stored in my brain until i get a cookbook deal 😉

      • Lindsay on June 17, 2012 at 12:06 pm

Someone needs to give you one soon!!! Ive been patiently waiting…

        • Fitnessista on June 17, 2012 at 12:09 pm
