The masked sleeper

Hiiiiii 😀 Happy Tuesday to ya! How’s your morning going?

Mine has been bueno- I had a sweaty treadmill workout (hills, running hills, sprint intervals, hill walking, tempo work for 55 minutes) and made this green sludge for bfast.

002

I just took a sip and um, it tastes like death. Breakfast may become something else. Blended kale, why must you taste so stinky???

To rewind to yesterday, we took out our homemade kombucha from last week and separated the baby bacteria (scoby) from the mother, and put them into a separate bowl with some kombucha liquid.

023

025

(You should have seen me separating this thing. It was the sickest thing ever!)

Then we got to pour the kombucha into a jar and flavor it according to our liking. I rolled with goji berries and orange juice

027

It has to sit for another day, but I had a tiny sip and it was surprisingly delicious. If you’ve ever wanted to make your own kombucha, I totally recommend it. It was super easy and tastes.. feasible 😀 You can buy the “mother” bacteria online. Some of us were debating how we might be able to take the remaining scobies home with us to make more kombucha, but I don’t think it would work well for those of us who have to travel. Imagine getting that through airport security 😀

We also made some macaroon cacao tart crusts:

028

029

We’re going to fill those bad boys today with malted chocolate tart filling. Mmmmm!

When I got into work, I got started on some prep work for the desserts section.

Guess what I made?!

RAW MACAROONS!

030

(Not my recipe, but still delicious) I saw that one of you tried to get the pilot to spill the beans for my macaroon recipe on his post –sneaky, sneaky! 😉

The rest of work was a lot of fun –we had some huge orders that I had to ask the exec. chef to help me with- and then I had an amazing dinner.

Raw pizza with marinara instead of pine nut cheese, veggies, heirloom tomato slices on the side and some kale chippies

033

When I got home, I talked to the pilot for a while, published the How I feast page, got ready for bed and whipped out my new purchase.

Enter the “sleep mask”

001

As you guys know, I haven’t been sleeping well at all lately and figured I’d give it a try. I slept like a baby last night. Amazing 😀

Well I’m off to get ready for school, have a wonderful day!

xoxo,

G$

The “How I Feast” page is awesome! I love it and it is totally in line with how I feel and approach food. 😀 YaY!

  3. Tracy on September 22, 2009 at 9:44 am

I sleep with earplugs almost every night. Try it, they work!

  4. Jessica @ How Sweet It Is on September 22, 2009 at 9:57 am

The macaroons look amazing, as usual. I am dying for your recipe as well. I can’t do the kale in my shakes, I just stick to spinach! Don’t even know it’s there. 🙂

  5. Mara @ What's For Dinner? on September 22, 2009 at 10:36 am

I just made kale chips in my dehydrator…they rock. Love ’em. Can’t wait to hear more bout yours. And your sleep mask…girl, I sleep with an old tshirt balled up around my head to block out light. Super sexy you can imagine 🙂

Gina, I think there’s a jellyfish in your kombucha! Are you still alive?!?! I don’t think that’s the kind of spicy you are such a fan of…

    😉

Glad you found something to help you sleep. There’s nothing worse than laying in bed AWAKE. I’m scared of kombucha. I see it in the stores but I’m too chicken to try it!

  11. K on September 22, 2009 at 11:30 am

Sleep masks are a God send sometime! Glad you slept well last night!!

Those tarts sound absolutely amazing – delish! Explaining the scobies to security would definitely be funny 🙂

  12. Laura W on September 22, 2009 at 11:59 am

Such a cute sleep mask! Where did you get it? I can’t believe I went through college w/o one, and here I am (3 years later) thinking that I should get one!
p.s. You’re really brave for drinking that homeade kombucha!

  13. Mary on September 22, 2009 at 12:16 pm

You can mail yourself a scoby. Put it in two ziplocks with 1/2 cup of tea or so, and mail it off. They’re surprisingly hardy! I bought one from an ebay seller and she’s had them lost in the mail for months and then returned to her, and she tested them and they still worked!

Haha I love sleepmasks, but earplugs are my godsend in ensuring a good night’s rest… Attractive, I know.

I love kale in my smoothies…But I do have to put a fair amount of fruit to counteract the bitterness.

  16. Shelby on September 22, 2009 at 1:05 pm

I hate kale in green smoothies! I think they make the whole thing chewy and gross! But I love kale in just about anything else 😉

I’ve always wanted a sleep mask. Just because they look cool. But then I’d be afraid I would breakout. I’ll have to just buy one and see.

  17. Chloe (Naturally Frugal) on September 22, 2009 at 1:20 pm

Damn, those coconut macaroons look so good! It would be even better dipped in chocolate, although I’m not sure if they make raw chocolate.

Love the sleeping mask, I’m sure that definitely helps with sleeping in a new place!

    • Fitnessista on September 22, 2009 at 11:11 pm

we totally make raw chocolate 😀

Homemade kombucha sounds very interesting. What exactly are the health benefits of the bacteria in kombucha? Maybe if I knew I could start to embrace the taste. That’s a big maybe! 🙂

I’m very happy that I was able to get the recipe for the original version of your coconut macaroons when you first started making them and had it posted to your blog. (I know you now use your own special variation of the recipe!) They are delicious and I throughly enjoy them, but just know that I always give you credit when I make them and I don’t post the recipe!

PS. I love reading about your experience at 105 degrees. It’s so fun to see all the new creations you make each day. The raw pizza looks heavenly!

    • Fitnessista on September 22, 2009 at 11:11 pm

the big benefit is the fact that the bacteria has probiotics which is extremely good for digestive health. it’s especially good if (like me) you avoid milk– still get those probiotics! there’s also a lot of other health claims associated with it, but they haven’t been proven. since it’s been consumed all over the world for hundreds of years though, i’m thinking it’s a good thing 😀
haha thanks for not posting my starter recipe 😉

Ehhh I am still not sure I could drink something that I know comes from something so slimy haha!

I am LOVING these posts Gina. I wish I could go to raw culinary school for a month too!

  20. Jenna on September 22, 2009 at 2:41 pm

    good looking macaroons!

  21. Kath on September 22, 2009 at 5:49 pm

Your mask is so pretty! I use free ones I get on airplanes 🙂 I sleep like a baby with them too.

  22. Erin on September 22, 2009 at 7:34 pm

That sleep mask is super cute! I think I might need that because this morning I didn’t know my own strength and accidentally ripped my blinds of the window frame. Um, whoops.

I love the homemade kombucha! My roommate in college had a throat/esophagus issue for a few months and had to drink specially ordered bacteria that she kept in mason jars in the fridge. We always thought it would be really funny to bring it out late night at parties when the good booze ran out. Ah, college.

I’m not a huge fan of kale in smoothies either – but kale in the juicer = delish!!

  23. Marisa on September 22, 2009 at 9:57 pm

Hey Gina… You mentioned a couple of posts ago that you have the NYC Ballet DVD, do you like it? I’ve been looking at it for a while, but couldn’t find any reviews. Thanks!

    • Fitnessista on September 22, 2009 at 10:50 pm

i LOVE it. it’s perfect because it’s separated into parts (floor work, barre work, plies, tendus, etc) so you can make the workout as long or short as you like 🙂

  24. Em on September 23, 2009 at 12:27 am

I really like your 105 degrees adventure.

I have to ask, as I wonder every time you post a picture, why do you always purse your lips?

    • Fitnessista on September 23, 2009 at 7:16 am

hahah i smile sometimes too. thats just me being a goofball 😀

  25. Jackie on September 23, 2009 at 1:17 pm
