Timeless beauty tips

Hi friends!! Hope your day is going well. Today, I thought it would be fun to do more of a beauty type post since it’s been a while. 

In my teen years and early twenties, I was transfixed on trying whatever was new or trendy with beauty products. You have to learn somewhere, but it makes me chuckle to think of the days where everything I put on my face had glitter in it: glittery lips, shimmering bronzer, and sparkly eyeshadow. I didn’t invest a lot in quality products, but would try something new and rotate here and there. I’ve realized over time that my routine has streamlined, and also how I’ve gone back to the classic beauty tips and necessities. Many of the strategies I currently follow don’t have anything to do with what they sell at department stores (though, let’s be real, you will lose me in Sephora).

While the convenience of a packaged product is nice, many of the things we can take care can either be through healthy eating/lifestyles, or making the conscious effort in various aspects of our routine.

Beauty Tips

Here are some of my favorite beauty tips that stand the test of time, and many of them I learned from my nana. 🙂

1) Take care of your skin. I wash my face every single night, use a night cream or oil (current favorite is Argan oil), and SPF in the morning. I’ve found that getting a good night’s sleep, managing stress, eating fresh foods, and drinking tons of water help the most with my skin’s appearance. Exfoliation is huge, too. I used to rarely exfoliate, but now make it a regular part of my skincare ritual. I like homemade body scrubs for my body, and the Fresh brand scrub for my face. 

2) Tame your mane. Even though my mom is a hairstylist, I always went months too long between appointments -I rarely left time in my schedule to actually book an appointment with her!- leaving my hair with shaggy ends. I’ve made a conscious effort to get haircuts more regularly, especially since my hair is finally the length I want it, to take care of split ends and avoid that not-so-pleasant scraggly look. I also use occasional hair masks, using ingredients from the kitchen, and deep conditioning treatments. I apply a hear protectant to my hair before styling, try to let it air dry whenever possible, and use a bit of Moroccan or Argan oil on the ends.

3) Eat healthy foods and exercise. This really has the biggest impact on my beauty routine. If I’m not taking the time to eat well, you can see it. This is usually when I get the “You look tired” comments from well-meaning acquaintances. I have a preschooler and I’m super pregnant. Tired is a part of life right now haha. As far as sleep goes, I heard a tip that sleeping on your face can give you wrinkles, so my goal is to try to stick with sleeping on my side or back once I have the ability to freely move again. 

4) Maintain a healthy smile. When I was in high school, I had a horrible experience with a dentist, which caused me to stop going for a few years because I was so afraid. (They took 8 times to numb my mouth accurately for a cavity filling that he insisted on redoing, which I later learned might have been unnecessary.) I ended up with some receding gums and some gum sensitivity which took a while to heal and improve. With the crowding on my lower teeth, it could also become more subjective to plaque (it’s harder to clean when the teeth are crowded), which is one of the many reasons I’m happy to be doing Invisalign treatment. My overbite was really bothering me, and I was slightly hesitant to flash a huge smile, especially facing profile in photos. I’m only a few months into my treatment, and teeth are already noticeably straighter. The clear aligners are so easy to use. I think a confident smile is one of the best beauty tricks a girl can have, and a vibrant, confident smile is usually the first thing I’ll notice.

    What spf do you use in the morning? I have a ton of samples from sephora that I’m working my way through but I’m always looking for a good one 🙂

      i use the tarte bb cream tinted moisturizer with spf. it’s a little too matte for me, but i like the ingredients and that the spf is higher

    I think the best tip is be confident and believe you are beautiful. That trumps all else.

    If sleeping on your face gave you wrinkles I think we would see a lot of people with asymmetrical wrinkly faces due to sleeping on the same side all the time, like I do. I think that one might be a myth. Though I have to admit I rarely wear mascara for a couple reasons, one is that it seems like the wiping/washing of that area to get it off would cause wrinkles. Who knows?

    Staying out of the sun is a big one for me! I am a shade worshiper. I am very fair skinned and burn easily so I always seek out shade and wear a hat and sunglasses! Staying hydrated and using gentle skin care products helps to also keep my skin looking its best. 🙂

      that is so true! i used to bake in the sun, and now i hide in a hat and sunnies 🙂

    I love tips and posts like this! Thanks. Can u tell me what heat protectant product u use when u do blowdry your hair.? I have tried two, but one felt sticky and the other somewhat oily. I do like weightless argan oil for the ends of my hair too. I just something that will protect my hair from the blow dry heat

    Have you ever whitened your teeth. My dentist always says I have naturally darker teeth shade plus I am a tea drinker. I tried an over the counter whitener and it was awful. Scared to try t at the dentist. Good on you straightening your teeth. Can make a huge difference to confidence!

      yes, i’ve used the crest white strips in the past and now i use the tom’s whitening toothpaste and think it helps a lot

    I have to second the Argan Oil recommendation. I received a free sample of the one you linked to (Josie Maran), and I had been avoiding using it on my skin because I have VERY breakout prone skin. In fact, the only moisturizer I can use is coconut oil, and even that I have to use sparingly because my skin will break out if I use too much. Winters (I live in Ohio) are a nightmare because my skin gets so dry.

    Anyway, out of desperation a few weeks ago when I had a really scaly, dry area on my face, I started using the sample. It worked really, really well — and no breakouts! So then I looked it up online and read that it is good for acne-prone, oily skin. I have been using it to moisturize my whole face since then and IT.IS.AMAZING. I can’t believe it. No breakouts from it, my skin looks more supple, and the red spots from former breakouts are fading. It’s even eliminating the clogged pores on my nose! I can’t believe it.

    Sorry for the ramble… I haven’t been this excited about a beauty product in a long time! 🙂

    I was the same back in the day, full face of make everyday… jeez now I swipe on some bronzer/blush, eye shadow, and maybe mascara if I’m feeling fancy. Healthy lifestyle (and buckets of water) is really the key. I bought a Pacifica cleansing oil (http://www.ulta.com/ulta/browse/productDetail.jsp?productId=xlsImpprod12931175) a few weeks ago and love it! My skin feels so moisturized, and it’s way cheaper than the Lancome oil cleanser I tried in the past.

    I started using a cleansing oil and I love it. My skin seems so much better without the harshness of a cleanser. I also make sure I drink warm lemon water every morning before coffee. I like starting the day off well hydrated.

    Great post! (Just getting around to reading it). I also love argan oil for my face. What face wash do you use/recommend? I’m the queen of going to the store, looking at 100 options, and then just buying something standard or cheap because I feel overwhelmed and don’t know which one to pick : )

      right now i’m using a mama mio face wash, but before that i was really into the naturopathica oat cleansing facial. i’ll be using that again when the mama mio runs out

      they’re still receding a bit on the bottom, but are much healthier. regular cleanings, brushing gently, and using a waterpik have helped immensely!
