Tiny Christmas cop and dueling pianos

Good morning! <3 Hope you’re having a great day so far. Thank you for the camera/lens tips. I’m not sure what I’m going to do yet, but at least I have until Black Friday and Cyber Monday to figure it out. 😉

So I have a funny Christmas cop story for you: the miniature version. Yesterday, I was like, “Oh, I’ll just play a little Michael Buble Christmas on Pandora, NBD” so I started playing it while I was making our breakfast pancakes. Liv started crying! Michael Buble, the swoon-master with the voice of butter, made my child cry hahaha. She said, “Mama, please turn it off!” Booooooo. Looks like the Christmas cop gene is a strong one.

Last night, the Pilot and I had a date night! We were originally thinking of going to see Interstellar (has anyone seen it?) but when we checked out the times, we realized it was almost 3 hours long. This means I would likely be head back in the theater chair, sleeping and mouth-breathing (oh yeah) while the giant bag of popcorn in my arms slides to the floor. We decided to wait to see the movie during the day.

Instead, we ventured downtown. It’s been so much fun to explore the different little restaurants and bars in the area, and we found an AWESOME dueling piano bar: the Shout House.

Tom and me 2

I’ve been to dueling pianos bars a couple of times when we lived in Valdosta and North Carolina, but it was my first time on this side of the states. 🙂

Here’s how it works if you haven’t seen it before: two pianists play requests from the audience and face each other while they sing and play. While one usually “takes over” for the main part of the song, the other will harmonize along with them. For songs with crazy guitar riffs or solos, they sometimes end up battling each other, and it’s pretty amazing to watch. The requests from the audience were a lot of fun (“All About that Bass” and classic songs, like “Crazy Train”). The girl, Melissa, sang Frozen and people from the audience were trying to pay her to stop the song, and another person would pay for her to continue. Also, there was a group of inebriated dudes who REALLY liked to twerk -it was so bad and so good at the same time haha- and they danced onstage. Most off all, I couldn’t get over how talented the musicians were. Not only did they play requests from the audience with no sheet music, they also sang, joked with everything, made fun of people, and beat-boxed too. It was amazing.

Dueling pianists

When we go out, usually I’ll get a glass of red or a margarita, but sometimes I like to ask the bartender to make their specialty. This was the bartender at Shout House’s specialty, which was basically LIKE LIQUID DUMP CAKE.

Liquid dump cake

(Cherry on the bottom, pineapple on top, tasted like candy)

This morning I’m waiting for my little sidekick to wake up, and then we’re heading to a picnic with friends.

Hope you have a great day! See ya later today with some High Intensity Interval music.

xoxo

Gina

I have a Shout House three blocks from my house. I’ve never been there. I wonder if it’s the same dueling piano. One thing I really miss about Tucson are the little quaint, local places to explore.

tucson has a ton of new ones, too! i want to check them out when we go back 🙂

I LOVE dueling pianos! A few years ago we went to Harpoon Fest in Boston and two dueling piano folks from a local bar played on the main stage. It was amazing! They were fully aware that they were at a beer fest surrounded by inebriated folks between the ages of 21-35 and played the perfect music. There may or may not be a very embarrassing video of me belting out “Piano Man” with a few hundred new friends. 😉

That dueling piano bar sounds fun! I’ve never been to one before. I have Michael Buble Christmas on my phone and whenever I plug it in in the car, it turns on and my 4-year-old shouts “No Christmas!!” Ha! Good thing I’m in agreement with that and quickly change it.

    • Fitnessista on November 19, 2014 at 8:36 am

hahah! it makes me laugh because when i was that young, i was obsessed with christmas music. some things never change 🙂

And that’s so sad Livi doesn’t like Michael Buble! Hopefully that changes with age! 😀

My kids tell me to turn off ANY music that I want to listen to! Doesn’t matter if they like it or not, they rule the music scene in my house. And everything else, I guess 🙂

    • Fitnessista on November 19, 2014 at 3:54 pm

That’s hilarious that Buble made your little one cry hahahaha. I love Michael Buble and say him in concert last year during Thanksgiving in San Francisco, and his voice is just the same live. Nonetheless, I haven’t broken out the Christmas tunes just yet. Happy Wednesday:)

  13. Courtney! on November 19, 2014 at 10:10 am

So funny! It just isn’t Christmas until I’ve played Nsync’s Christmas album approximately 30 times through.

  14. Joanna @Makingmine on November 19, 2014 at 10:15 am

Haha – I don’t know what I’d do if my daughter was a Christmas cop. She and I have been listening to Christmas music on Pandora since Halloween 😉

  15. Amy S on November 19, 2014 at 11:33 am

HAHAHA that’s so cute about Liv…she’s definitely taking after her dad when it comes to Christmas!

Hey Gina– love our blog! I’m coming out to SD in Jan with my boyfriend and wanted to know your top three restaurants out there! We’re definitely visiting True Food Kitchen (we are both health nuts!). Any other recommendations are appreciated– doesn’t have to be healthy we also like to indulge! Thanks!

    • Fitnessista on November 19, 2014 at 3:52 pm

so fun you’ll be here! ok, so you HAVE to go to bo-beau kitchen. it’s my fave here, by far. the goat cheese flatbread with jalapeños is wonderful. everything is so good! also highly recommend herringbone in la jolla and ob noodle house (if you like pho), acai bowls from tiki port or cafe by the bay (pacific beach), and the cottage (another must-do!) in la jolla for breakfast 🙂 have so much fun!

There is a dueling pianos bar in Myrtle Beach SC called Crocodile Rock that I’ve been to twice on vacation. It is prob the most fun I’ve ever had in a bar!! Love them

My husband and I saw Interstellar on Sunday! I knew it was long before we went to see it, but I didn’t know HOW long. I looked at my watch when it was over and was amazed that it was 3 hours long! It definitely kept my attention the whole time (partly because I kept asking my husband questions since he loves science and space stuff). Granted we went to the very first showing of the day at noon, I think I would’ve been able to stay away regardless of the time of day. I really enjoyed it!

    • Fitnessista on November 19, 2014 at 3:47 pm

good to know! i excited to see it!

  21. Maggie @ Veg Fiend on November 19, 2014 at 4:06 pm

The dueling pianos bar sounds so fun! I’ve heard about them, but now I’ll have to try one out 🙂

  22. Kim on November 19, 2014 at 5:21 pm

I love dueling pianos!! We used to have a place here that would have dueling pianists about every couple weeks.
That “dump cake” drink looks really good – I might have to try and figure out a recipe!!!

  23. Heather Cory on November 19, 2014 at 5:25 pm

Interstellar was a loooong movie, my husband and I saw it opening night. We wished we would have waited until it came out on Netflix, we like to pause and have an ‘intermission’ during long movies; grab a snack, make a drink. And I don’t think it’s lived up to the all the hype. It was good, but not great in my opinion, maybe because it was so long and the movie theater was uncomfortable! I would def. recommend watching it at home though!

  24. Kay on November 19, 2014 at 5:34 pm

Woah, dueling pianos sounds so cool. I need to look for a bar that does this around here. I think both my boyfriend and I would love it.

Also, I love Christmas even before Thanksgiving. No shame.

I love dueling piano bars! I’ve only been a few times but always have so much fun whenever I go. You and your hubby looked so cute together on your date night! 🙂

I also have to check movie time lengths before starting one at night time.
