Too darn hot

Morning! Hope you’re having a great day so far <3

belly7

Bell and I just got back from our morning walk. She’s getting a haircut today- I like her hair shaggy and sassy, but it’s too hot to keep it long :/

It’s also way too hot for slow cooker meals, but that didn’t stop me yesterday 😉

sp chili

Those of you who guessed sweet potato and black bean chili were totally right- you know me too well 😀

I was having a mad hankering, and we had all of the ingredients on hand, so I figured it would be a good night for chili. Chili’s kind of a summer food, right?

sp chili (2)

[Covered in a blanket of goat gouda]

The Pilot also had cornbread with his chili- he sliced off a thick layer from the top and placed the entire circle of cornbread on top of his chili. Brilliant.

So good 😀

There’s a lot to do today (+ choreographing a new Zumba dance- just found out I’m teaching tomorrow) and I have a latte date with my nana 🙂

A fun bonus: our washer decided to call it quits during the move. We tried to do laundry last night and were flooded :/ Moving is already super pricey, and now we get to add a new washer into the mix. I’ve been doing laundry at my mom’s house in the meantime… flashback to college days 😉

Family post coming atcha this afternoon –I’m really excited about this one!

See ya laterrrrr <3

xoxo

Something to do:

Have you tried this week’s ab burner yet? I’ve loved the feedback so far! I have to say the best one was when Carolyn said it made her want to punch my blog in the face. haha

Ugh – unplanned appliance repairs are no fun. I just found out I need to get a water filter & softener system and that all the carpet needs to be replaced. Definitely don’t have THAT in the budget this month! 🙂

Sure, chili is good year-round. I’m glad you have all the heat down in AZ. We WI folks can’t handle anymore and it’s finally starting to cool off!!!

  2. Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat on August 9, 2011 at 11:47 am

Your chili looks awesome Gina! Lately I’ve been all about the no-cook meals, but I’ve actually had a little craving for pumpkin (pumpkin chili maybe??) lately. I know it’s only August, and I’m feeling like buying myself some might jinx the summer! I haven’t done your ab burner yet but am going to write it out right now and do it tomorrow morning! 🙂

    • Fitnessista on August 9, 2011 at 11:50 am

i’ve been wanting pumpkin lately too! last night, i kept thinking about pumpkin oatmeal… mmmm

  3. Krista on August 9, 2011 at 11:47 am

That looks amazing! I love sweet potato – so going to try this.

  4. Cat @Breakfast to Bed on August 9, 2011 at 11:47 am

We had the same problem when we moved only it was our dryer. GRrr.

  5. Laura @ prettylittlewords on August 9, 2011 at 11:48 am

It seems like Bella has to get haircuts more frequently than I do! What a cutie pie 🙂

    • Fitnessista on August 9, 2011 at 11:50 am

bella gets haircuts more than i do, for sure.

  6. Michelle on August 9, 2011 at 11:50 am

before you go buy a new washer – make sure it’s not just the tube that determines water level! i was having my dryer repaired one day, and the repairman shook the washer hard enough that the tube dislodged from it’s seal. the second the seal is broken, the washer can no longer determine water level. it’s a simple fix of just resealing the tube, takes all of 10 minutes… (of course my repairman didn’t think to do this and my place flooded as well). but anyway, might want to check this before assuming it’s a goner!

    • Fitnessista on August 9, 2011 at 11:51 am

oooh good to know! is it something the pilot could do, or should i call a repair guy to do it?

  7. Jessica @ Sushi and Sit-Ups on August 9, 2011 at 11:50 am

Sorry about the laundry snafoo–hope you find a replacement soon!

  8. Kiran @ KiranTarun.com on August 9, 2011 at 11:56 am

Darn! I hope the laundry issue gets sorted out soon *hugs

there is no wrong time to have chili, ever!

    • s on August 9, 2011 at 12:30 pm

agreed 🙂 chili is an anytime food ;). i eat it year-round!

  10. Yolie @ Practising Wellness on August 9, 2011 at 12:01 pm

Oh noo! I’m sorry about the washing machine that is always a pain…hope it gets sorted out soon, with minimum hassle. I love it when woofs come back from the hairdressers, ours always look sooo adorable and extra huggable, lol! <3 That sweet potato slow-cooker meal looks lovely – I got one for my birthday (a slow cooker not a sweet potato :-P) so I will have to make it soon! Wishing you a beautiful day! 🙂 xyx

The chili sound yum yum, and I love that green bowl your salad is in!

  12. Chloe (In Fine Feather) on August 9, 2011 at 12:13 pm

Booo washer! I guess at least this means you’ll get to pick out a one you really love. Hopefully this is the last of the moving shennanigans you and the Pilot have to go through!

  13. Kim @ girlevolving on August 9, 2011 at 12:13 pm

It must be something with moving. When we bought our house last year and moved in the dryer broke in the first week. Luckily my dad figured out how to fix it (when he came to visit a month later!) but it required him taking apart the ENTIRE dryer. Hope yours ends up being something fixable or cheaper-than-expected, too! If not, at least you’ll know you’re spending money on something you’ll use A LOT in the next years!

  14. kaila @ healthy helper! on August 9, 2011 at 12:21 pm

I knew it!! I love that chili!!!!!

  15. Heather @ Get Healthy with Heather on August 9, 2011 at 12:23 pm

That’s no fun about the washer! Hope you have a great nana date 🙂

  16. Ash @ Good Taste Healthy Me on August 9, 2011 at 12:23 pm

It is def too hot out! It’s supposed to cool off by tomorrow though! Woohoo!

  17. Gina @ Running to the Kitchen on August 9, 2011 at 12:25 pm

Check craigslist! We’ve gotten all our washers/dryers from there every time we moved and they’ve always been pretty new and much cheaper.

    • Fitnessista on August 9, 2011 at 5:50 pm

they have some great ones on craigslist, but i get too creeped out to buy anything from there.

  18. Gen on August 9, 2011 at 12:26 pm

Yum! That chili looks delicious!!! 😀
Can’t wait for the upcoming workout!

  19. Namaste Gurl on August 9, 2011 at 12:39 pm

It’s always good cold as well? If it’s too hot you could try it that way 🙂
So jealous of your heat- it’s low 60s here in the bay area 🙁

  20. Sara K on August 9, 2011 at 12:50 pm

Ahhh please pass some of that heat up here to the bay area, it’s so cold!

  21. RhodeyGirl on August 9, 2011 at 12:53 pm

We had the same thing happen to us!

Except in our case my husband was away for work, as what always happens when something is going to go wrong. I went through all of our 20 towels and still had 1/4 inch water everywhere. Luckily the building maintenance guy has a wetvac and was able to come up and suck it all up. It was horrible!

Good luck finding a good washer/dryer. And make sure you get rid of your old one in a way that makes it tax deductible! We donated ours to a local place who then hodge podges together washers/dryers for those who need them so we were able to take a deduction on it.

  22. RhodeyGirl on August 9, 2011 at 12:54 pm

PS- Please come make me that chili.

    • Fitnessista on August 9, 2011 at 5:50 pm

i’ll totally make you some! or come over for leftovers- i have a ton in the fridge 🙂

  23. Brittany @ Itty Bits of Balance on August 9, 2011 at 1:09 pm

It’s okay! Although its summer, I still manage to make fall feastings: Pumpkin bread, apple crisps– the whole spiel!

  24. BIOCHEMISTA on August 9, 2011 at 1:16 pm

Gina, I make this ALL THE TIME! Your recipe has become a staple in our apartment 🙂 I usually add ground turkey breast. Sooooo gooood 🙂

  25. Emilie on August 9, 2011 at 1:24 pm

There is nothing like a slow cooker recipe, but using sweet potatoes make it all the more enticing! Great photos here. I am loving the spread of food.

  26. Kat on August 9, 2011 at 1:30 pm

bummer for washer problems! We had an issue about 6 months after we moved in where the washer was mysteriously flooding. We DIY-d the investigation and found a nickel lodged in the pump 🙁 had to replace the pump but WAY cheaper than a new washer!

  27. Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg on August 9, 2011 at 2:08 pm

Ugh– we had to buy a new washer and dryer when we moved into our house last week. The costs just seem to really pile up when you move, right?

  28. Laura @ Backstage Balance on August 9, 2011 at 2:09 pm

Sorry to hear about your washer and the flood! Appliance issues are the worst. Make sure now that you have your house, that you buy a home warranty. Ours is like $40 a month but covers EVERYTHING in case any major appliances or the central air unit, water heater, etc. bunk out. I learned to get the warranty the hard way… this winter we had to buy a new dryer and made a costly repair to our furnace!

  29. Amanda on August 9, 2011 at 2:30 pm

Bummer about the washing machine! Hope it is a smaller fix like someone else mentioned.

Hubs and I have been saving up for a down payment on a house (I don’t want no stinking 30 year mortgage!) but this is a great reminder to save up even more than we plan to spend on down payment and closing costs… We have friends who had to replace their hot water heater AND roof within a year of buying their first home. Blahh. Maybe renting is ok for a while longer 🙂

  30. SaraRM on August 9, 2011 at 3:04 pm

I just did the ab burner! It was great, my heart rate definitely up by the end so thats an added bonus. Worked different muscles than im use to working which is fabulous!! Ill tell ya more tomorrow when I wake up how I really feel about it then 😉

  31. Allison on August 9, 2011 at 3:11 pm

I will DEFINITELY be making this soon! Although, I bet I will need to toss in some meat (turkey) crumbles for the fiance to “beef it up”!

“it’s too damn hot for penguins to be just waaalkin’ aroound”

  33. Lori Z on August 9, 2011 at 3:31 pm

My daughter walked downstairs yesterday and started screaming that there was water everywhere – our washer quit too. Thank goodness we were home and the damage was minimal. Really hoping it can be fixed! I hope no damage was done in your lovely new home!!

  34. Abby @ Abz 'n' Oats on August 9, 2011 at 3:43 pm

You’ve got me seriously craving some chili. 🙂

  35. Leslie Wingate on August 9, 2011 at 3:54 pm

I could seriously eat sweet potatoes each day for the rest of my life. They are my love!

  36. Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga on August 9, 2011 at 4:15 pm

Nothing like not having a washing machine and trying to scramble all over town to get your laundry done…ugh! When it rains, it pours.

I hope you have good luck finding a new washer soon! Obviously it’s not something that you can just “wait and see” on.

And the sweet tater chili looks PERFECT. Like 100% straight up perfection!! I want to bust out the slow cooker, now! 🙂

  37. Lauren@hungryspinner on August 9, 2011 at 4:25 pm

poor bella.. my dog has had to stay pretty much hairless all summer with our 100+ degree temps

  38. Trainer Kjirsten @ Balanced Healthy Life on August 9, 2011 at 4:31 pm

I don’t think I could eat chili in summer but that’s probably because I’m so sick of the heat! I love your husband’s idea with the corn bread! : )

Hi Gina! I just moved to Tucson for graduate school and I have a quick question for you: where can a girl find some inexpensive yoga? I live really close to yoga oasis, but oh my GOODNESS monthly membership is just not something I can afford right now. Any tips or advice?

    • Fitnessista on August 9, 2011 at 5:48 pm

unfortunately yoga here is super expensive. the good thing is that yoga oasis has yoga hour classes that are $4- they’re awesome classes too! also some gyms have decent yoga- if you live by the stone ave la fitness, they have an instructor there, carrie, who is amazing

      • Sarah on August 11, 2011 at 12:57 pm

whoops! I meant to say that I live a block away from Yoga Vida, not Yoga Oasis. Yoga Vida is the crazy expensive place, and Yoga Oasis seems to be the best deal.

Maybe I will try la fitness. Thanks for the advice. It’s fun trying to figure Tucson out. It is just so hot oy.

going to try the abb-burner workout tomorrow morning. it looks great!

  42. Carolyn (Life in the postcard) on August 9, 2011 at 5:48 pm

Aww, Bella is so darn cute!
Home repairs and appliance replacements are so not fun. I am all for home projects and new furniture (okay only kind of since I have an aversion to spending money in large sums but I like to dream) purchases but not fun purchases like a washer makes me sad. 🙁
RR-a list of the Latin tunes you are loving these days?

  43. Bonnie on August 9, 2011 at 6:13 pm

Your washer! What a pain! 🙁 At least you’re using that slow cooker to the fullest! 😉 With your ab burner reminder at the end of your post I decided to tack your moves onto the end of my workout today. Awesome! The Sprinter was the hardest and came at the perfect time among the other moves – my shaky abs thank you… 😉

  44. Christine @ BookishlyB on August 9, 2011 at 7:43 pm

Love that you hang out with your grandma so often! It’s so sad when people only make the effort when something’s wrong.

    • Fitnessista on August 9, 2011 at 8:25 pm

omg, we hang out all the time. she’s my little friend, and favorite breakfast buddy 🙂

  45. Niki on August 9, 2011 at 7:54 pm

Okay, I HAVE to make that chili. Two of my favorite things ever!!

  46. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on August 9, 2011 at 8:07 pm

I love chili year round too. It’s just so good! I’ve never tried a SP + black bean version though… definitely have to try that out!
