Two new hair and nail faves

Thank you so much for those of you who left feedback on the Fashion page. I’m using all of your suggestions and we’ll see where it rolls from here 😉

Since my clothing situation is still awkward [hoping to remedy the situation this weekend], I thought I could focus on two things that are easy prettify when you’re feeling blah: hair and nails.

Here are two things that I’m loving right now:

1) Conair travel set curlers (about $30)

The thing I love the most about these are the soft case- I had a beloved set of hot curlers, and the case got cracked in my suitcase during one of our travel adventures. These ones are crack proof! [<—that sounds weird, haha]

curlers

I forgot about the hot curlers for a while, since I have fallen in love with my Easter curling iron, or will just straighten my hair.

One day we were chilling at my mom’s house and the Pilot fell asleep on the couch. I was bored, so while he was sleeping, I heated up my mom’s hot curlers and threw some in my hair. The first thing he said when he woke up: “Your hair… you look absolutely gorgeous”

I ordered my own set the next day.

Some tips for hot curlers:

-If your hair is dry and holds a curl reallllly well: to avoid the Shirley Temple look, wash your hair and wear the curlers for a while at night. [I recommend the medium to jumbo sized hot curlers- the tiny ones make the curls too tight] Take them out before you go to bed, and in the morning your hair will have beautiful, soft waves. It’s ok to put curlers in your hair if you haven’t washed it in a day or so –I wash mine every other day- and just tousle and go.

-If your hair doesn’t hold a curl very well: use medium-sized curlers on freshly washed hair. When you take the curlers out, don’t touch the curls or mess with them and spray with a heavy hold hairspray. When you’re ready to leave the house, lightly tousle the curls and go. Avoid touching your hair too much because the curls will droop.

hair (2)

[Gives the same look as curling each piece of hair individually. It’s a major time saver]

*If you guys would like, I can do a video post on how to put the curlers in- it’s super easy once you have a method in place.

2) Teal and army green nail polish

These are two of the big colors for fall.

polish

Jewel tones always make an appearance as the weather cools down. Teal is surprisingly neutral,

and even more fun with a slightly lighter French manicure.

nails

Army green tones are replacing greige and sandy brown.

Have you used hot curlers before? What did you think?

What color are your nails right now? My nails are teal, and my toes are orange for Halloween 🙂

Love this post! I’ve been wanting to try hot rollers but everytime I’ve tried them the curls seem to come out funny lookin’ :/ I would love a tutuorial!! Love those nail polish colors too 🙂

  2. Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga on October 12, 2011 at 4:34 pm

My nails and toenails are bare. I haven’t polished them in ages. Whoops! I love yours. So cute!

And hot rollers. I am not the best with them. I do better with a roundbrush and blowdryer or a big curling iron. I can never get hot rollers to stay or I roll them wrong and end up with really lopsided and wonky looking curls…haha. Your hair is absolutely gorgeous. The pregnancy is definitely agreeing with your locks 🙂

  3. Lisa Bailey on October 12, 2011 at 4:50 pm

I would like a tutorial also, would love to try the rollers just never done it before.

  4. Julie (A Case of the Runs) on October 12, 2011 at 4:52 pm

Do hot rollers work better than those conical curling irons or straightening irons for making curls? My hair is horrid… it takes the highest setting to get a curl, and even after spraying, it will limp up in a few hours… =(

  5. Annie on October 12, 2011 at 4:52 pm

I’d love a tutorial. My toes are hot pink (I’m in denial summer is over) and my fingers are bare until I paint them later today (I’m debating between greige and gunmetal).

  6. Lizzie @TheWeekdayVegan on October 12, 2011 at 5:08 pm

    Instructional video, please!

Separate question– you mentioned you wash your hair every other day. If you have a sweaty workout but aren’t planning to wash your hair til the next day, what do you normally do? Do you have a dry shampoo that you like or do you just let your hair go or pull it up? It always looks so good!

  7. danielle on October 12, 2011 at 5:09 pm

I need to try those curlers! Thanks for the tip!

  8. mi-an d. on October 12, 2011 at 5:13 pm

  9. Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie on October 12, 2011 at 5:18 pm

I love your nails! Such a cute idea layering the blue on the blue! Mine are currently Essie Mint Candy Apple. Its one of my default favs I always seem to be wearing.

  10. Cait @ Beyond Bananas on October 12, 2011 at 5:20 pm

Definitely have BOTH of those exact nail polishes! LOve the way they look together. RIght now my nails are BARE. I need to change that stat.

  11. Amy Ramos on October 12, 2011 at 5:29 pm

I think a tutorial would be great! I would like to change up my hair from straightening it to let it air dry (ie a major frizzball)

  12. Hillary on October 12, 2011 at 5:34 pm

I’m rocking some super dark burgundy on my nails right now. Very fall-ish!

  13. Katy on October 12, 2011 at 6:04 pm

I would love to see a video on hot curlers! My hair is naturally wavy and I would love to make it more curly sometimes! The last time my hair was in curlers was when my mom did it for my kindergarten graduation and I don’t remember how she did it! =o)

  14. Paula on October 12, 2011 at 6:06 pm

I’d love to see a tutorial on the curlers! I’m rockin’ some OPI color (my sister-in-law picked it out and I forgot to look at the name) that’s a metallic/copper/purple kind of vibe to it. Wish I knew the name since I <3 it! Keep up the great work! I love your blog so much!

    • Fitnessista on October 12, 2011 at 7:17 pm

  15. Jen @familyfoodfitnessandfun on October 12, 2011 at 6:10 pm

I would love to use hot rollers, but I find them so awkward to put in. A video would really help 😉 Love the nail colours!

  16. Gina on October 12, 2011 at 6:13 pm

Yes, PLEASE post a tutorial on hot curlers! That would be beyond awesome! I love the way your hair looks curly, but I can never replicate it with an iron OR curlers….help!!!

  17. Lauren on October 12, 2011 at 6:20 pm

    I love hot rollers!!!
My nails are bare right now because I’m to cheap to buy a new colour, and I’m sick of the ones I own 😛

  18. Dee on October 12, 2011 at 6:23 pm

you should know, that comment you got from your Pilot just sold ANOTHER set of hot curlers! Mine will be delivered Monday.

    • Fitnessista on October 12, 2011 at 7:15 pm

      haha! enjoy- i love them!

  19. Heather @ Bake, Run, Live on October 12, 2011 at 6:26 pm

I would love to see a video on the hot rollers. I burnt my hands when I was younger, so they are sensitive to heat. I’ve always been afraid to try hot rollers because of this.

  20. kathleen @ the daily crumb on October 12, 2011 at 6:35 pm

love the nail colors!! have you tried a colored french manicure where the tips are not white, but a bright color? i have seen some gorgeous versions with deep purple, teal, and and silvery gray.

  21. Sandy on October 12, 2011 at 6:35 pm

This might be a stupid question, but do you put the curlers in with wet hair? I am curling iron challenged so I would love to try curlers.

    • Fitnessista on October 12, 2011 at 7:11 pm

nope, you definitely want to put them in dry hair

  22. Emily on October 12, 2011 at 6:38 pm

I would love a curler how-to video! I always end up with those little ‘fish tail’ ends!

  23. Brooke @ sweats & sweets on October 12, 2011 at 6:49 pm

Love hot rollers because I’m can’t use a curling iron, I have 4 all in different sizes and yet I still lose in the battles of the curl!

  24. Ashley on October 12, 2011 at 7:08 pm

Yes a video pls! I am horrible with hot curlers and have some i haven’t used in a looooooooong time
    your hair looks so nice

  25. Johanna on October 12, 2011 at 7:22 pm

Oh I would love to see how you put them in! Mine always fall out unless I put a shower cap over my head lol

  26. Megan on October 12, 2011 at 7:36 pm

Awesome post! I <3<3<3 teal nail polish, I was thinking of adding it to my stash! Now I have even more reason :).

I would really benefit from a video or tutorial on hair curlers. I have some and use them frequently, but I always end up looking really "bushy"….never like your hair! My hair curls easily, but it doesn't hold. Hairspray seems to make it look unnatural…even the natural kind. So tips are appreciated!

  27. Christina on October 12, 2011 at 9:36 pm

Please please please do a how to post!!! I love curling my hair with an iron but am completely curler challenged.

  28. Kayla (kiki85) on October 12, 2011 at 10:13 pm

My toes are frosted raisin and my fingers are boring and bare. I have used curlers before but it has been years. So I vote yes for a video!

  29. Jessica on October 12, 2011 at 10:46 pm

I would LOVE to see a video. I have bought rollers like that before but my hair does not hold a curl. Period.
Your hubby’s comment to you was SO sweet! I would melt if my hubby said something like that.

  30. Michelle on October 12, 2011 at 11:28 pm

pleeease do a tutorial! it has been ages since I’ve used hot rollers because I always use a curling iron

  31. E on October 13, 2011 at 2:43 am

    PLEASE video for rollers!

I have naturally curly hair but it is very curly…. so I end up blow drying it and then putting in curlers (sounds absurd, I know… I rarely have the time/energy to do this, but it is what it is and i love the extra bounce they give me for things like date night with the future hubs)

Anyhooser, A tutorial would be most helpful. I always feel like I end up with wonky curls in different directions.

I’m loving the focus on hair/nails. I think you can totally do things like product reviews/hair stuff/other fun self-care tidbits (skincare, what to look for in an esthetician/massage therapist since facials/massages are your thing, etc.) I know it’s not “fashion” per se, but if it goes into the way you carry yourself, I’d say that’s numero uno on the ‘how you look’ scale. Good luck with everything. I love your blog (esp. the fam page)!

  32. Sara on October 13, 2011 at 7:24 am

Please post the curler tutorial. I’ve always wanted to try the hot curlers, but I’m afraid…

  33. Kate on October 13, 2011 at 8:53 am

eek! i just discovered the glory of a curling iron…if this will save some time on work days, it’d be great to have a tutorial to follow!!!

  34. Suzanne on October 13, 2011 at 9:29 am

Love the teal nailpolish! 🙂 I’m going to have to get a bottle.

  35. Mac on October 13, 2011 at 9:56 am

I have used hot curlers, they’re really about the only thing that kind of works in my hair. I don’t own any though, I’ve only used my sisters. Current nail color…. Gray. I love it!

  36. Ashley @ Good Taste Healthy Me on October 13, 2011 at 10:47 am

omg please please please do a video post on it!

  37. grace on October 13, 2011 at 10:58 am

I use hot rollers almost every day and have been doing so since high school. They are by far the most efficient way to make your hair look awesome.

  38. Judy on October 13, 2011 at 2:21 pm

Bet you’re wishing you made a commission off the sale of these…. I just ordered mine!!

Thanks for reminding me how easy hot rollers are to use. Guess I’ll be getting *those looks* again as I make my morning commute with them still in my hair! 🙂

  39. Anita on October 13, 2011 at 4:35 pm

I’ve been thinking about getting some of these because I think they’d be really good for adding body to my hair I would loveee a tutorial, though 🙂 I have very long hair and I’m worried that it will become really tangled when I take them out.

  40. Melodie on October 13, 2011 at 4:48 pm

would LOVE a video demo on the hot rollers if you have the time. haha. you’re a busy girl. my hair is finally a little past my shoulders (which is super long for me since i’ve normally sported styles around chin-lenth). but when i do hot rollers, i ALWAYS look like shirley temple. not cute. not cool.

  41. Shayla @ The Good Life on October 13, 2011 at 7:30 pm

Omg I would love love a video tutorial!! I have always wanted to try hot rollers but have always shied away from it because I never understand how to do it! And your hair looks so gorgeous like that, I would love to recreate it, especially since it sounds so easy to do 🙂

  42. Brittany on October 13, 2011 at 7:32 pm

I use hot rollers 4 or 5 days a week. Definitely the fastest way to look polished if you have really long, thick hair like I do. So easy, too–I’ve been using them since elementary school 🙂

    • Fitnessista on October 13, 2011 at 7:39 pm

i have too! they were perfect when i couldn’t figure out to curl my hair with a real curling iron whn i was younger

      • Brittany on October 13, 2011 at 7:42 pm

        Exactly! 🙂

    • Brittany on October 13, 2011 at 7:41 pm

Oh, and toes are turquoise (Essie Turquoise and Caicos) and fingers are greige (Essie Master Plan).

  43. Jenn on October 14, 2011 at 10:58 pm

Oh man, I totally forgot about hot rollers! I used to have a set and I have no clue where they went. I have been using a clip-less curling iron lately but I definitely miss the quickness of hot rollers. Time for some new ones 😉

Also, I just painted my nails tiffany blue (China Glaze For Audrey aka best color ever) with a sparkly dark royal blue ring finger on each hand. My toes are a very, very dark purple for the beginning of fall which is a welcome change from the pinks and oranges I usually had over the summer.

  44. Brenda on October 15, 2011 at 5:12 pm

Please do a vlog on hot curlers!

    • Fitnessista on October 15, 2011 at 8:20 pm

it will be up next week!

  45. Nancy @ Beyoutiful Fitstyle on October 16, 2011 at 7:08 pm

I’ve been researching some ways to curl my hair. I haven’t picked on yet but I’ll have to add this to my list. Curlers just seem the least amount of work – which is perfect for me! I’d love to see the video tutorial on how to put them in, I’ve never used curlers before.

  46. Tiffany on October 16, 2011 at 11:56 pm

I love teal nail polish.. although I wore it about a month ago and my nails are STILL stained this awful green color from it.. I’ve just kept them covered with another color to hide it 😉

    • Fitnessista on October 17, 2011 at 1:30 am

haha it stains my nails pretty badly too

  47. Lauren on October 17, 2011 at 12:34 pm

    VID-E-O!!! VID-E-O!!! 🙂

    • Fitnessista on October 17, 2011 at 12:36 pm

it will be up this week 🙂

  48. Meg on October 17, 2011 at 10:05 pm

Wow I love the teal 😀

  49. Laura @ Backstage Balance on October 19, 2011 at 12:58 pm

    Great post, Gina!
I love, love, LOVE hot rollers! I have super long hair and hot rolling is my favorite way to style it. My college roommate taught me how to use them, and I’ve kept a set ever since. Though I haven’t seen the soft case travel rollers before – what a great idea! My current set has a giant crack in the cover thanks to last year’s Foodbuzz traveling 🙂
I’ve never fully grasped the concept of nail polish or manicures. My boring nails could use some cute polish like the colors you have here.

  50. Alyssa on October 25, 2011 at 7:22 pm

have you seen the youtube tutorial on how to do vintage-y style curls without heat? I saw it the other day and totally didn’t think it would work on me, but it looked so easy that I thought I’d just try it anyway. Oh my gosh! The curls are SO awesome and last a long time and only took about 5 minutes to do. I’m sold! Just google vintage curls with no heat and the video should pop up.
