Upper Body HIIT Blitz

Hi friends 🙂 Glad you all got a laugh from our fail of the week (year?). I’m still snickering about it.

Monday was pretty good to us. Liv and I ran errands and shared a Jamba Juice, went to her baby gym class, the day ended in bubbles:

Bubbles 1 of 1

and last night, I got the chance to hang out with a good friend whom I’ve missed like crazy. Marisa is in town for a few days, and just like old times, we took a dance cardio class at BreakOut Studios (<– if you’re in a Tucson, take a BreakOut class- it will rock your world).

The music was deafening, the moves were extraordinarily sassy and I got to dance next to my friend (along with two friends from work who were in class, too!). It was awesome:

A smiley face to punctuate the evening: dinner was already (almost) served.

Burgers 1 of 1

Lately I’ve been prepping dinner while Liv eats lunch. She’s happily occupied and safely in her chair, so I can quickly blend, chop and season components. It’s been working out well- I’ll play some music and talk to her (or do my standard craycray dance moves), and she’ll sometimes help with dinner when she’s finished eating.

She makes the best sweet potato fries 🙂

Making dinner 1 of 1

I prepped a burger/fries salad to enjoy when I got home from dance, but ended up eating a burger a la paper towel (with a giant blob of ketchup) and almost all of the sweet potato fries that were left off the pan. I also took a pic of said salad, but it’s too blurry and yellow to post. Instead, here’s this giant bowl of popcorn and some wine:

Popcorn 1 of 1 2

Today’s salad lunch is in the fridge, already waiting for me.

Also waiting for me: some iron-pumping! I’m ready to get in my upper body and HIIT workout today. Who’s joining the party?

Here’s what’s on the agenda:

Upperbody

(Of course, check with a doc before making any fitness changes)

If you could pick one arm exercise as your favorite (or one you love to hate), what would be your #1 choice? Mine is definitely the assisted pull-up. It really works my back and biceps, and there are a lot of ways to switch it up (switch grips, tempo, isometric holds and really lowering the counterweight).

Hope you have an amazing day! See ya later with a raw jalapeño crisp recipe.. they came out pretty dang delicious.

xoxo

Gina

I love bubbles! What an adorable picture of Livi and her daddy. <3

Liv with the fries is the cutest!
    Ah, she’s adorable.
That is such a sweet picture of Olivia and the Pilot. Love it.
Thanks for the upper body blitz. I love working upper body, of course with cardio thrown in there so my heart rate stays up, it’s about the only way I can get strength training in, otherwise I find it too boring.

You have me craving sweet potato fries and a veggie burger for dinner! Any chance I could borrow your cutie to help me prep? 🙂

What burger recipe is that? Looks delicious!

Hey Gina, If I don’t have any way to do a pull-up, what might a good alternative move be?

  7. Heidi on March 5, 2013 at 11:21 am

Your food looks great!! Don’t you love when you prep food ahead of time and know that it is all ready and waiting for you? So worth the extra work! That is why I {heart} my crock pot in a big way!! 🙂

My favorite arm/chest move is definitely push-ups!

  8. Sarah @ Yogi in Action on March 5, 2013 at 11:32 am

The picture of the bubbles is so adorable!

Mmm wine and popcorn- great choice. Now I want a little of both of those things.

    Love this work-out!!
Push-ups are my favorite – love trying new variations!

I really got a kick out of your “fail” story yesterday and wanted to share that my fiance had one of his own this morning! Rushes to get out of the house for an 8:00 dentist appt in downtown (major southern city)–fights rush hour traffic and of course on a day when there are several accidents on the interstate. Arrives at said appt at 8:15. Feeling horrible, stressed, rushed, etc. ” I’m sorry, sir, your appointment is THURSDAY” womp.womp. (And they couldn’t work him in until 11:00 so he left and had to drive back to work in the total opposite direction). Poor guy!

My favorite is bicep curls and I don’t see them on this workout ;( I can’t wait to try this one though!

I love pull ups because they work everything! My goal is to complete a full pull up with no assistance by the beg. of the summer. I’m excited!

What highchair do you have? Our son is 4 months old and we are looking for a recommendation.

    • Fitnessista on March 5, 2013 at 1:07 pm

we have the oxo sprout and love it!

  14. Tory on March 5, 2013 at 1:17 pm

I’m sure this has been asked before, but what would be a good substitute for the assisted pullups if doing this at home with no machine or pullup bar?

    • Fitnessista on March 5, 2013 at 1:28 pm

      do you have resistance bands?

      • Lisa on March 5, 2013 at 3:37 pm

I got a revolution pro recently (made by lifeline) and it is absolutely fabulous. I’m still using the three bands and can manage 12,10,9.5 🙂 as three sets. I also have their jungle gym which I prefer to the TRX and it’s cheaper ;-). I have no connections to this company at all but love their stuff , it’ll be even cheaper for you in the states, it’s all so much more expensive in the UK but still worth the poundsssssssss.

That looks like a good workout, I may have to incorporate some of those moves iat the gym today!

  16. Tracy on March 5, 2013 at 1:31 pm

I’m in!! Can’t wait to do this workout tomorrow morning!

  17. Courtney on March 5, 2013 at 1:33 pm

So just something to mention and I am in no way affiliated with this company but a co-worker recommended this and I thought it was something you could totally be interested in. Its a meal-planning service called the fresh 20 and they are all about whole un-processed foods and every week they put out a 5 day meal plan with a shopping list and nutrition information. I have been doing this for 2 weeks now and its awesome!! The great thing is every night it takes very little time to throw together dinner for my family. As a new mom I am really enjoying the ease of it. It kind of rocks my socks off and is definitely awesome for new recipes…I kind of felt like we were in a rut. Just thought I would pass along the info since you were talking about meal prep. Have a great day!

I love bent-over barbell rows and I HATE tricep overhead extensions even though they work so great!

  19. Allison @ Train Eat Repeat on March 5, 2013 at 4:07 pm

I’m a big fan of military press!
but my one goal is to be able to do at least ONE unassisted pullup, I think that would feel amazing to accomplish

  20. Kalynn on March 5, 2013 at 4:27 pm

When I read “raw jalapeno crisp recipe” I was thinking of the dessert-style crisps, then I saw your latest post and it totally made sense! I don’t have a dehydrator, but I definitely want to try the recipe because I love anything jalapeno!

  21. Jay on March 5, 2013 at 5:42 pm

Love the assisted pull up too. Feel like I’m strong woman doing it (even though it’s assisted!). Thanks for the blitz! J

  22. Naomi on March 5, 2013 at 6:45 pm

I did lower body and HIIT yesterday, and holy soreness today! I am planning to do upper body tomorrow, so I am looking forward to trying out this workout or one of the other ones you have posted. Thanks for doing this plan! It’s awesome 🙂

  23. Emily on March 5, 2013 at 7:05 pm

    BUBBLES!! Ohmygosh, my favorite!

Overhead press kills me. My shoulders pop so bad I think I’m going to break something. And they’re just hard. But I like how I feel afterwords – “to the gun show!!”

  24. Veterinarianess on March 5, 2013 at 7:46 pm

Pushups are the best (worst!) for sure. They definitely tone up my arms!

  25. Jen on March 5, 2013 at 9:29 pm

I LOVE pull-ups! It makes me feel strong and awesome. I can do 8 consistently, and I’m shooting for 10. Hate push ups though.

  26. Nichole on March 5, 2013 at 10:51 pm

Just finished this Upper Body HIIT workout (did two rounds) and followed it with some yoga – it was amazing! Just that 10 minutes of jump rope is killer! Thanks for the schweaty-ness 🙂

  27. Michael on March 6, 2013 at 4:01 am

This looks like awesome fun! I think I’ll try it with diamond pushups though for a little extra workout.

  28. Bek @ Crave on March 8, 2013 at 8:58 am

I love assisted chin ups! They’re hard but I feel bad ass doing them 😉 One day I’ll do them on my own haha 😛

  29. Jennifer on October 4, 2016 at 11:39 am

Whenever this one is on the schedule I think “oh an easy one ” and then I repeat it 3 x and remember how hard it is! Lol
