Vitamin C smoothie

Hi friends! I’m off to Boston this morning for a fun Reebok event. This post was supposed to go up much earlier, but as I was about to upload, we had a bit of a… situation. One of the engines in the plane malfunctioned and we made an emergency landing in Dallas. It was the first time that’s ever happened to me and let’s hope it was the last. On the way to Dallas, all I could do was watch the precipitation dance on the window and say 14,000 “Hail Mary'”s.

Man, I loathe flying. (Ok, except for when the flight attendants continuously offer you two types of wine, along with hot meals and free movies.)

Now, after diverting and getting my ticket changed, I’m on my way again 😉 Last time I was in Boston, I was 16 years old and visiting my aunt and uncle with my nana. So, needless to say, it’s been a while and i’m so excited to go back. I’m determined to have some chowder (“chowdah!”) before I leave.

Since the weather in Tucson is changing, I thought today I’d post my favorite Vitamin C smoothie. When it starts to cool down, and the season “ick” makes its rounds, I do everything in my power to fight it. My favorite strategies are to make sure I’m getting enough water, get enough sleep/rest, and eat nutrient-dense foods. I find that increasing Vitamin C helps immensely, too. As much as I adore the Emergen-C packs, I also like to increase my amounts from food. Strawberries and OJ are always a good choice 😉

(Some other great sources of vitamin C: kale, red pepper, broccoli and kiwi.)

Since strawberries are officially out of season -the ones from the market have been mushy lately- I like to buy frozen strawberries. Bonus: the keep the smoothie cold and yield a great texture, without having to add ice.

Along with the strawberries, I add some orange juice, soaked goji berries, a splash of lime juice, half a banana and a hefty pinch of cayenne:

(Did you know cayenne is a great anti-flu and cold agent, and also has anti-fungal properties? Perfect for sick season)

and drink.

The citrus is extremely refreshing and I love the spicy kick from the cayenne. Try it, and let me know what you think!

Do you still drink smoothies in cold weather? For me, they have no season… neither does hot chocolate. Both are year-round treats 😉

I’m so excited to try this smoothie! I haven’t had even one since Labor Day weekend (and haven’t really missed them in the morning), but I think this would be a nice afternoont treat/virus crusher.

Very happy the emergency landing went well! If you feel like driving down to Connecticut while you’re on the east coast you’re totally welcome to my wedding this weekend! 😉 lol.

    • Fitnessista on October 14, 2013 at 2:04 pm

omg, that would be so much fun! wedding crasher haha 🙂

      • RachelG on October 14, 2013 at 2:08 pm

    The smoothie sounds pretty good.

I usually try to only drink smoothies during warm weather. I’m always cold (even during the summer), so if I have something cold to drink when I’m already cold it’s just not good!

    • Fitnessista on October 14, 2013 at 2:05 pm

i’m always cold, too! but i’ll drink my smoothie with a hoodie and slippers on 😉

  5. Jackie on October 14, 2013 at 2:10 pm

I’m not a huge smoothie person but generally I can have them year round!

I am so sorry you are having bad travel experience. I hate that. I drink smoothies all year round too. Right now I am all about pumpkin pie smoothies – YUM and seasonal!

  10. Ashley on October 14, 2013 at 2:31 pm

So – something similar happened to me recently – on a flight from Chicago to New York we had a mid-air malfunction and made an emergency landing in Detroit…. while everything ended up fine, it is SCARY! Glad you’re ok… and that smoothie looks delish 🙂

  11. Jen on October 14, 2013 at 2:31 pm

    Yum!!
I’ve never had goji berries in a smoothie, obvi something is wrong with me! 🙂
    Thanks for sharing!

And I’m absolutely terrified of flying, I don’t know how I would handle an emergency landing!

Hi Gina! I’m a first-time poster, but long-time reader and I love your blog!

If you get a chance while you’re in Boston, go to Mike’s Pastry in the North End. That’s all I wanted to post, but trust me when I say they are that good. Best. Cannoli. Ever.

    • Jen on October 14, 2013 at 6:21 pm

We might start a bakery war, but I vote for Modern Pastry instead! Mike’s is more touristy. But both are delicious!

  18. Emma on October 14, 2013 at 4:19 pm

I’m glad u landed safe and sound, I hope that never happens again!!! I live on the cape u should try to get down here if u can. It’s gorgeous this time of year. Have a great time in Beantown.

  19. Kristin on October 14, 2013 at 4:21 pm

Glad to hear you are safe! You have to visit “life alive” in Cambridge while you are in Boston it is a DELICIOUS vegan/organic/ local ingredients cafe!

  20. Kelly @ Femme Fitale on October 14, 2013 at 4:40 pm

Emergency landings are the worst! I also can’t handle getting on a delayed plane because they have been “fixing” something. Ahh!

Great idea with the smoothie. I need to make one today… my husband and baby have been sick and I have Body Attack instructor training in a few days, and woke up today with a sore throat. Praying it doesn’t get worse!

  21. Caitlin on October 14, 2013 at 5:13 pm

Yay Boston!!! I hope you have time for a run along the Charles! Especially with the leaves changing right now, it would be a perfect morning or late afternoon run 🙂

    Have a great time!

  22. Abi on October 14, 2013 at 5:32 pm

I love smoothies and hot chocolate year round but usually tend to drink more of each in their respective season.

  23. Taylor @ Single-tracked Mind on October 14, 2013 at 5:44 pm

Love the cayenne is the smoothie! Tasty!

I also hate flying so an emergency landing is my idea of a heart attack!

  24. Talia on October 14, 2013 at 6:47 pm

Glad you’re safe! I lived in the heart of Boston for three years so if you are looking for a really good juice/smoothie place “Juice/Jugo” in back bay is great and then an amazing vegan/vegetarian cafe from local farms is called “Life Alive” in Central Square, enjoy!!

  25. Lauren @ Sassy Molassy on October 14, 2013 at 7:12 pm

Yum, that looks delicious! Definitely putting these things on the grocery list soon. 🙂

  26. Angelica on October 14, 2013 at 7:55 pm

I currently live in Boston too! You’ve mentioned Italian food. Go to Giacomo’s in the north end. yum.

  27. Kara on October 14, 2013 at 8:02 pm

How scary! Glad you are safe! This smoothie looks delicious! I will definitely be trying this for a vitamin C boost. I try to use Kombucha when I am feeling sickly but I still just can’t get used to the taste. Have a wonderful time in Boston, I’ve always wanted to go there!

  28. Cassie on October 14, 2013 at 9:37 pm

Yes, I will definitely be trying that smoothie next week. Thanks!

  29. Morgan on October 14, 2013 at 9:46 pm

I was at the Dallas airport this afternoon too, on my way to Arkansas from Washington. The weather was definitely icky and we experienced quite a bit of turbulence. I’m glad we both made it safe and sound!

  30. Lucie on October 15, 2013 at 3:13 am

Oh God, that’s so scary. Even though I worked as a Flight Attendant for a few years, I never had this situation! Glad everything is ok now!!

  31. Alicia on October 15, 2013 at 2:06 pm

Excited that you’ll be in Boston! Let me know if you need any recommendations for workout facilities, bars, restaurants or shopping from a local!

  32. Kristin on January 3, 2014 at 2:39 pm
