“What are you doing New Year’s

New Year’s Eveeeee?”

If you haven’t seen this video yet, it’s super cute.

They just belong together.

Something to look forward to in the New Year?

More INDIAN FOOD 🙂

indian

As you guys know, my beloved cuisine has taken a backseat to Thai since we haven’t really found an Indian restaurant in Tucson that we’re crazy about. A couple are very good, but not anything we crave on a regular basis.

We finally found a place:

saffron

Saffron serves modern twists on Indian favorites and the atmosphere is super casual and laid-back. The food was all beautifully plated and perfectly spiced.

The ultimate test of whether or not I like an Indian restaurant? Ordering the Baigan Bhartha (eggplant) to see how it compares.

baigan

It was everything I could wish for. It wasn’t greasy at all, and I had asked for it spicy–  to my surprise, it actually had a kick to it. This means a lot to a girl who eats whole jalapanos.

I also had a couple of bites of the Pilot’s chicken tikka masala, which was very mild but flavorful

tikka

he enjoyed some fluffy naan

naan

and we shared saffron basmati rice.

An amazing Indian meal <3

This morning I went into work to cover for a friend for a few hours, and we’re going to take Bell on an adventure before heading to a New Year’s Eve party. No clubbing for us this year, and I might end up watching the ball drop on DVR tomorrow, but it should still be a lot of fun 😉

Have a wonderful night and I’ll see ya next year!

xoxo

I’ve watched that video three times in the last two days. They are both so adorable, I can’t even stand it!

I have to pick my bf up at the airport at 7:30 tonight, and we’ve been brainstorming places to go for dinner. I think you just planted the Indian seed in my brain. Haven’t had it in forever!

  2. Alison on December 31, 2011 at 3:19 pm

That video made me smile! Happy New Year!

I am in Florida at our family vacation home with family, family friends, and the boyfriend. There is a nice formal party at the clubhouse in the golf community we live in so that will be fun! I just have to keep reminding myself not to each chicken at the buffet! It’s bad luck to eat chicken on New Years eve or day! You will “scratch for money” the next year…best not to chance it!

Happy New Year to you and the Pilot! 🙂 So excited for what the new year will bring you guys.

After one crazy year, my boyfriend and I are hanging low and ordering take-out, drinking a bottle of champagne, and watching The Big Bang Theory marathon. I will probably be in bed before midnight and my boyfriend absolutely will (he works at 4am tomorrow). 🙂

I can’t stop watching that video – love them!

Have a wonderful New Year’s, Gina!

Glad you found a place that you love and passes muster. Nothing worse than having an idea of a dish in your mind and for how you want it to taste and then they bring it out and it’s lackluster or just not as expected. Glad this place will become a new go-to spot.

And I keep feeling like you’ll go into labor on NYE. So maybe that’s what you ‘ll be doing tonite 🙂

  7. Jaclyn on December 31, 2011 at 3:58 pm

I love that you posted these tips – I am laying low this year too but it’s so important to remember – and remind others- that people, situations, get kinda crazy NYE night and being safe is SO important.

It’s been a fun year following along – and hanging out ! – Happy New Years and I look forward to following along in 2012. 🙂

I used to shy away from Indian food until my brother got a job as a waiter at an Indian restaurant. He helped me figure out what to order, and now I love it!*

Hi Gina – Happy New Year to you,the pilot,Bella & the nugget!!! I’ve been reading your blog for a while now and you are a true inspiration to me. I live on the other side of the country – my name is Gina and – I had an adorable pup named Bella too!!! Sadly she passed away very suddenly and I miss her each day. I struggle with working out and healthy eating but you always provide me with postive thoughts which I hope will finally find a way into my daily life in the new year. I can’t wait to hear about your baby girl. Please know that you brighten my day and teach me something valuable. I’m a true fan!!!! Oh – I LOVE the photos of your Bella. I have recently started a gluten free diet due to digestion issues and other reasons…is most Indian food gluten free? i hope so because i LOVE Indian food!! Tikka Masala is my fav! Hope you have a very happy new year!

    • Sara on January 1, 2012 at 4:40 am

You have to ask. It varies between restaurants. Sometimes they use wheat products as a thickener or a filler in the spices. I have a friend that is celiac and often reacts to Indian food even when they have stated it is gluten free.

      • Fitnessista on January 1, 2012 at 1:55 pm

yep, you definitely have to ask. the exciting thing is that a lot of the veggie and meat dishes are naturally gluten-free and the pappadum usually are, since they’re made with lentil flour

        • Kristin on January 4, 2012 at 12:50 pm

oh okayy! 🙂 thank you!!!! Can’t wait to see ur baby on the blog soon!!!! 🙂

LOVE this video!!! Happy New Year to you and your little family 🙂 Hubs and are skipping the clubbing/bar hopping this year as well…we were going to go out but some things came up 🙂 and we didn’t see the point in spending the money. So we’re keeping it low key by going to dinner and then hopefully staying up to watch the fireworks at Navy Pier.

  18. Sonia the Mexigarian on December 31, 2011 at 6:56 pm

Hubby and I are eating out at PF Changs ( got a gift card for christmas) and then spending the rest of the evening at home with our furry kids, watching Dexter (this past season). Hopefully I will remain concsious enough for the ball drop.

  19. Tyra on December 31, 2011 at 7:57 pm

My Indian meal litmus test is Palak Paneer (basically home-made cottage cheese in spinach).

Some places it’s too watery and others it’s very creamy so there’s a lot of variation! If they do a good Palak they win our hearts 🙂

  20. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on December 31, 2011 at 7:58 pm

I love that feeling of finding a new restaurant that you know is going to become one of your new favourites. 😀 Your Indian feast looks delicious!

    Have a happy NYE! 🙂

When I saw that video I wanted to call Joseph Gordon-Levitt and say “I’d like to be spending it with you…” but I couldn’t find his number. I’ll settle for staying in with the boyfriend instead.

  22. Sana on December 31, 2011 at 9:54 pm

That Indian food LOOKS gorgeous! I’ve never found Indian food to be visually appealing before!

    • Fitnessista on January 1, 2012 at 1:57 pm

right? everything was so beautifully plated

  24. Leslie Wingate on December 31, 2011 at 11:59 pm

If they aren’t hooking up, they should be. How cute are they! I love to sing (to myself and in groups). To me, there is something so intimate about performing with someone like that. Anyway, cutie patooties!

My dang Father in law brought over Snickerdoodles. I swear, people try to sabotage me. 😉 So, I’ve eaten a million and had some Outback takeout. Cabbage Rolls tomorrow and then back to real food.

  25. Sara on January 1, 2012 at 4:36 am

We were partied out.. including an accidental party that happened on the 30th. SO we stayed in, drank a bottle of champers, watched ‘Bridesmaids’ and I made a pizza. Things went badly when I opened the pizza bases (my favourite fermented grain ones) and they were all covered with little mould spots! (arrrrgh). So, I invented something like a pizza base, using buckwheat flour. It sort of worked.. maybe a bit ‘teeth breaker’ around the edge, but otherwise passable. At midnight we were on skype to overseas family, jumped around and kissed and stuff.. And then got to do it all again at lunchtime today when it finally came around on the other side of the world!

    • Fitnessista on January 1, 2012 at 1:56 pm

we enjoyed our first New Year’s Eve in our new house. We went downtown to see the fireworks on Fountain Square and went out for pizza, mozzarella balls (so good), and beer for dinner. It was a fabulous NYE, definitely filled with lots (almost nine miles!!) of walking.
