while I was sleeping…

Hi friends! How are you? Hope you had a wonderful weekend. What did you do? I’d love to hear about your fitness events or anything else going on. ICYMI: I blogged yesterday! Just a quickie post with my workouts from last week.

W my lovies

(Dress J Crew from Thred Up // Livi’s dress // P’s dress is LulaRoe)

As far as the weekend goes, it was a great one. We had a date night, lots of low-key time here at home, and I got my Mother’s Day gift of sleep. Not much else I could have asked for.

After the Pilot got home from work Friday night, we put the girls to bed, and I headed out to Hobby Lobby and Pier 1 for some more around-the-house stuff. I found some great pieces -everything is slowly coming together!- and got home just as it started to pour. I think it’s rained more here in the past 4 weeks than it did the entire time we were in San Diego. I kinda love it. We watched Big Little Lies (obsessed!) and called it an early night.

Saturday morning, the Pilot got the girls as soon as they woke up, and took them to breakfast at Cracker Barrel while I slept in. He told me to take until noonish to sleep or do whatever I wanted to do, and it.was.amazing. I ended up sleeping until 10am and then lied in bed for another hour reading (AHHHHH) and drinking tea.

Tea and a book in bed

(finally finished it! It was good, but not my fave Emily Giffin novel.)

Finally, I meandered to the closet to get dressed and headed to the gym for some cardio + legs. I wrote a bit about it in yesterday’s post, but it was my first time trying the Peloton app and I’m a huge fan so far. I’m excited to try another class! I got home just as everyone else as getting home to eat lunch.

While I was sleeping the Pilot and the girls had gone to breakfast,

Tom and the girls

to Target, to the mall (to play arcade games) and to Menchie’s for froyo. It was a pretty cute daddy-sister date.

Saturday afternoon, we played here at home (it rained again so no pool for us) and then the Pilot and I enjoyed a date night at Giulio’s.

Daters gonna date

Giulio’s was one of our favorite places last time we were here, and absolutely nothing has changed. It’s had the same owner for 30+ years and is a mix of Italian and Greek cuisine. The restaurant is in a cute little building, and it seriously feels like you’re eating at grandma’s house.

Grandma's house

You know, if grandma has Greek sculptures and artifacts everywhere.

We had delicious sangria,

Sangria

shared the grape leaves,

and for my entree, I had the grouper, which came with roasted potatoes and sautéed spinach. It was buttery, lemony, and perfectly cooked.

For dessert: baklava.

Baklava

Sunday morning, I enjoyed spending Mother’s Day with all of the people who made me a mama. I was greeted with kisses and the most beautiful cards, and we drove to Daylight to get some donuts.

Donuts

The only bummer was that P climbed out of her crib again, so we’re trying to figure out what to do about it. We have blankets surrounding the crib (and had already removed the changing table and turned it so the highest side is facing out), but I have no idea about the next step. There’s no way she’s ready for a big girl bed (or we’ll have to seriously get rid of everything else in the room), but she can’t keep climbing out and hurting herself. 🙁

We played here at home, went to Publix for groceries,

Shopping at Publix

and the Pilot cooked a fantastic dinner for all of us. I definitely missed the fam, but felt like it was a perfect way to celebrate Mother’s Day.

After the girls were bathed and snoozing, we poured some wine and enjoyed chilling on the patio together. Not a bad way to wrap up the weekend.

Hope you have a happy Monday! Thank you so much for reading and I’ll see ya soon.

xo

So they still make crib tents? That’s what I used when my kids were little. It was the best!

    • samantha on May 22, 2017 at 2:08 pm

My girl started climbing out early too, I bought a cheap crib, like $120 on amazon, one that was low to the ground, and put the mattress on the floor. If that make sense? Basically the crib was together but the bottom metal piece wasn’t on and the mattress was on the floor, since the crib was low/short legged, there was no space for her to get caught.

Did a sleep sack not end up working after the first time she climbed out?? Piper is 2.5 and still in a sleep sack for that very reason. I hope you can find a solution. What a monkey!

    • Fitnessista on May 15, 2017 at 6:33 am

No, she hated the sleep sack 🙁 such a bummer

Happy Mother’s Day, Gina! Sounds like it was a great weekend for you:)

  4. Laura @FitMamaLove on May 15, 2017 at 6:41 am

When Emme was climbing out, we lowered her crib mattress all the way to the floor, off the springs. It sat directly on the floor and there were no gaps between it and the crib where she might get stuck(this might be a problem with some cribs if the bottom is curved). She wasn’t able to climb out after that and we had her in it until 3.5!

  5. Audrey on May 15, 2017 at 6:56 am

Those baklava and donuts look amazing! And it’s so sweet that the pilot takes the girls out for dates. <3

My son now 22 months, at 20 months wouldn’t stop climbing out and so after one too many stressful/scary naps/bedtimes I went to ikea and got a daybed and toddler rails and he now sleeps in a big boy bed and the craziest thing he NEVER climbs out and it’s been two months! It’s like he needed to know he had the option. We also use the okay to wake owl and stay in bed with him if he gets up before it turns green. I felt like he was soooo young and my older son now 4 NEVER climbed out, but it was the best choice we could have made. Crossing my fingers for you that you find the right solution.

    • Fitnessista on May 15, 2017 at 8:11 am

so many people have said that, and that’s what liv did. (we didn’t switch her until she was 2 1/2). the problem is that i don’t think p would stay in there at all. she’s a little monkey and always looking for things to climb and get into. we might do it as a last resort though

      • Caitlyn on May 15, 2017 at 8:45 am

So is my son! He is a climber the first time he climbed out he was only 14 months, but he fell so that scared him….but he is a crazy climber and somehow still stays in. I swear there is hope!!!!

        • Fitnessista on May 15, 2017 at 8:51 am

that gives me hope. thank you!

  7. Christy on May 15, 2017 at 7:36 am

Have you considered just letting her sleep on her mattress on the floor? It’s a montessori method (floor
Bed) and it sounds like P is ready to adventure before anyone is awake. You can put Some toys to the side of the mattress so she can play independently. We had the same thing going on until another mom
Suggested it to us. Just a thought 🙂 happy Mother’s Day!

    • Fitnessista on May 15, 2017 at 8:09 am

i thought about it, but we’d seriously have to remove a lot of stuff from her room and probably pad the walls hahah. we have a queen bed in there for company, so she’d hop up on there and start jumping, or try to climb the shelves, or go in her closet and hang from the rail, or try to go downstairs. she’s into everything.

      • Julie on May 15, 2017 at 9:01 am

I really feel for you, & I’m so sorry, but your response here just totally cracked me up! She’s a little monkey! <3 Hoping you find something that works for you… it really is scary, & would be such a pain to have to remove all that stuff, but ultimately you want her to be safe. XO

        • Fitnessista on May 15, 2017 at 10:26 am

she’s definitely our wild child hahaha
thank you! i hope we get it figured out soon, too

      • Christy on May 15, 2017 at 9:54 am

I’m in that situation now too where I have to put guest bed in baby’s room. Maybe bunk beds?!

        • Fitnessista on May 15, 2017 at 10:33 am

          hmmmm.. definitely worth looking into!!

      i will!! hahah

What an awesome weekend! Let me know what you find to keep P in her crib. My daughter is about that age, she is not climbing out yet, but she tries to climb on everything else, so I am terrified she will start.

    • Fitnessista on May 15, 2017 at 8:08 am

i will! she did it when she was 11 months but since we changed the crib (rotated and removed the changing table she was using as a platform) she hasn’t done it again until this weekend 🙁 it’s so scary!

  10. SS on May 15, 2017 at 8:41 am

Peloton FTW!!! I have the bike at home and it’s awesome. The BF and kids jump on it as well! Sometimes I put on a “scenic” ride just to burn calories, other times I put on an awesome “on-demand” class with one of their amazing instructors! Let us know what you think as you do more rides! (Cody is my favorite instructor, you will adore him. Take a live-DJ class with him, it’s the best!)

    • Fitnessista on May 15, 2017 at 8:51 am

i took his class! he was AWESOME- so much fun 🙂 i’ll definitely post more as i try more rides
that is amazing you have the bike! i’ll definitely invest in one when my spin bike bites the dust

  11. Taryn on May 15, 2017 at 9:10 am

I don’t know if this will work, but for our daughter we lowered the side as low as it would go so she could climb in herself without getting hurt. We were fortunate that she always called for us before she climbed out, but for some reason just the IDEA that she could get out herself made her feel more in control? Kids are strange. I hope you figure something out that works for everyone. Luckily once our daughter started getting out on her own she ALWAYS came to find us right away before tearing up the house 🙂

    • Fitnessista on May 15, 2017 at 10:28 am

that’s comforting to hear! i was wondering if it’s a control thing, too. hopefully we’ll get i figured out soon!

  12. Angie on May 15, 2017 at 9:23 am

Around 1.5 we found our oldest a couple of times with one leg over the side of the crib jumping up and down with the other leg. We put a mattress on the floor for him and babyproofed his room. Then we put a gate in his doorway and left the door open. So, if he got up, he couldn’t get out of his room. For a few days, he got up and went to the gate. We gently walked him back to his bed and he pretty quickly stayed in bed. It was important that there were no toys in his room, only books that he couldn’t really see in the dark.

    • Fitnessista on May 15, 2017 at 10:29 am

that helps a ton- thank you! she has pretty much nothing in her room besides a queen bed for company and some shelves on the wall. i’m worried if she can get out easily, she’ll be able to hop over her baby gate that’s at her door… she’s upstairs so i’m just so worried about her trying to climb down the stairs at night

  13. Jessica @ Semi-Sweet Tooth on May 15, 2017 at 9:44 am

Sounds like a wonderful, relaxing weekend. I decided to let myself sleep in this weekend, and I’ve rarely gone into a week feeling so refreshed (at least sleep-wise… it seems all stress remains, ha.)

Glad the whole fam got to celebrate YOU this weekend!

  14. RR on May 15, 2017 at 9:52 am

My now 2.5 year old was catapulting herself out of the crib just after 2 years old. I also tried a sleep sack but she was adamantly opposed to that idea. We ended up with “big” girl bed that has a trundle pull out. She sleeps in the trundle every night and surprisingly, despite her monkey tendencies, stays in it. I’m planning to read “raising my spirited child” really soon as she pushes every.limit. Good luck, its so hard.

    • Fitnessista on May 15, 2017 at 10:32 am

p did it once at 11 months, and i was hoping that would be it. HA. our little girls sound like they’re so much alike. <3 she's upstairs which adds to an entirely different layer of problems if she gets out. i'm wondering if i can put something on the doorknob that childproofs it from opening. that way if she's mad and wants to get out at least we'll hear her.

      • RR on May 15, 2017 at 11:06 am

I leave the actual door open to her bedroom but put a gate across the opening. Then I can still hear but she’s stuck. She may win a few battles but I plan to win the war.

  15. Jacquelyn on May 15, 2017 at 10:55 am

Sounds like the absolute perfect weekend Gina. You are SO deserving and such an AMAZING mama!!! I love watching the journey. I read that Emily Griffin book when it first came out last year and it definitely wasn’t my fav either. I’m huge fan of hers but that book didn’t cut it for me. I just read Always by Sarah Jio and it was incredible. I’m also a HUGE Debbie Macomber fan. If you like nice easy reads that get you hooked, I totally recommend her! Have a great week. I’m still going Barre strong too! WOOHOO!

  16. Kara H on May 15, 2017 at 11:08 am

Would love to hear how you find babysitters so quickly when you get to a new area and how you pick them out! Do your girls go to bed with the babysitters? We just moved to a new place and I have no idea how to get started to find reliable sitters and what to expect! We have a 9 month old so would love to hear your advice!

  17. Ashley @ A Lady Goes West on May 15, 2017 at 12:36 pm

I have no crib advice, clearly, but I do want to say that I’m glad you had a nice Mother’s Day with your little ladies. And I would like to see more pictures of P’s tiny ponytail. Please and thank you. Goodbye! 🙂

  18. Leah on May 15, 2017 at 11:00 pm

What a great weekend! Hope you can figure something out with Miss P’s bed situation. Boy, she sounds like a monkey. I had friends have to completely strip the rooms due to kid being out of crib.

  19. Juliette | Namastay Traveling on May 16, 2017 at 3:54 am

Happy mother’s day to you! Looks like a wonderful and sweet day. Are crib tents still a thing? Hope P is okay! ..And this climbing will serve her well as a super rock climber when she’s older…but for now she’s gotta stay put!

  20. Sandy on May 16, 2017 at 5:24 am

Our pediatrician told us to remove the bottom of the crib so that the mattress sits on the floor but inside of the crib (does that make sense? Am I explaining it right?) – it would only work with a certain type of crib so maybe it wouldn’t work but just wanted to throw it out there! Also, told us to try a light sleep sack (so they can’t get their legs up to climb!

  21. Carly on May 16, 2017 at 5:28 am

Both my girls were out of the crib well before 2 because of climbing out. Sucks. Each time, we went ahead and got the big girl bed, mega baby proofed the entire room, turned the door handles around and locked them in from the outside a night. Basically, the entire room became a crib. I actually like having the locks on the outside because no one can accidentally lock themselves in at any time.

  22. Krista on May 16, 2017 at 8:40 am

Sarah started getting out of her crib at 11 months. We ended up having to put her in a bed with (removable) rails because we were afraid she would hurt herself through the night if we didn’t hear her get out. :/

  23. Christina @ montessoriishmom.com on May 16, 2017 at 11:13 am

What a wonderful Mother’s Day weekend! We use a floor bed for our little guy (mattress on the floor, and just have very little in his room. My friend recommended this to me too though if you don’t like that option: https://www.amazon.com/Lotus-Travel-Crib-Portable-Playard/dp/B00AKKDSNG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1494958368&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=lotus+travel+crib&psc=1 She used it for travel, but said it was comfy enough to sleep in all the time.

  24. Katherine K on May 16, 2017 at 11:44 am

Just adding my $.02: our little boy started jumping out of his crib when he was age 2, and was (is)(still) into EVERYTHING (much like Miss P)! He was too crafty for the sleep sack/mattress on the floor trick, and absolutely would not stay in his room, despite trying all the “bring him back to bed quietly” advice for over a month! After that pediatrician recommended we put a small lock (cheap “hook and eye”) on the outside of the door. It’s flimsy enough that a good shove with a shoulder would probably break it, but he couldn’t get out. Although we can hear him very well, we were so worried that he would fall down the stairs, turn on the stove, or -God forbid- lock himself out of the house in the middle of the night. In our pediatrician’s words, “it’s far more dangerous for him to be running around unsupervised than it is for him to be locked in for a while.”

We stopped locking the door around the time he turned 3.5, once he was old enough to understand the “Okay to Wake” nightlight (that turns green when he’s allowed to get up). It might not be right for everybody, but it was for us. Just giving you our experience so that if you choose to go that route, it’s fine and you’re not alone! 🙂

  25. Julia on May 16, 2017 at 5:23 pm

Gina, I feel you on the monkey child. My 3 year old is full on that way. When he was maybe one and a half (maybe younger) he flew out of his crib (literal leap out onto the floor from a normal crib). I freaked and he slept on the floor on his mattress. We have stairs and trained our kids using gates, and eventually the gates went away and I bought ten nightlight that light a path through the house at night. No one has fallen down the stairs yet. Every time we trained our kids to sleep out of a crib it was a few days of hassle. They’d play with toys or bother us a bunch, but the novelty wears off and then they decide to sleep because the rebellion lost its appeal. I hope you find a workable solution.

  28. LK on May 19, 2017 at 7:54 pm

You could try a toddler bed – it uses the same crib mattress but is much lower to the floor. We got ours from Toys r us – all wood and she was thrilled to be in a big girl bed. You could also put a baby gate across her door to keep her contained
