Whitney: Dip-dyed Locks!

Holy Pinterest and Instagram inspiration Batman.

Ever since I first saw a few dip dye pins roll through my feed a few months ago, I’ve been lusting after the dreamsicle dipped locks for my own. Luckily for me one of my bestest friends, Rikki from Hair Ya Go, happens to be one of the most talented hair and fashion stylists I know, and loves to play dress up. If she could dress me everyday, I would DIE for that.

This girl has so much sass and style, she ALWAYS inspires me to try new things and take my looks to new levels. More importantly, whatever she rocks be it a pixie cut, and her own handmade cut off dip dyed jeans, she actually ROCKS it. Owns it and never questions how it looks. Confidence to truly envy and strive for. When I told her I wanted to dip dye my hair, she was of course game.

We decided on haute pink aka my favorite color of all time, purple and blue. I even brought my bestie Savannah along so we both could rock some my Little Pony locks. And a bottle of chambubbly.

Everything Rikki touches oozes with style, love her hair menus!

First step. Sit down, glass of chambubbly in hand.

Rikki did about 6 inches of color just foiled on my tips.

And for Savannah she went more for a “tie-dye” look and layered colors in each tipped foil.

Looking good Savy!

Ta-da!!!

Dip Dye BFFs

In love with my dip dye! If you are dye-ing to try it, here’s a few tips from Rikki:

  • Choose you colors ahead of time and communicate them with your hairstylist so that he/she can purchase them ahead of time
  • Tell your stylist to “feather” the tips- that works best
  • Depending on whether you have light or dark hair will affect the color. If you have dark hair it may not come out as bright, if you want it to be dramatic with dark hair, you should bleach the tips first for more drama.
  • Less is more sometimes, you can always add color, but taking it away is more difficult.

At the end of the day, it’s just hair, you can cut it off and start over. So do what you dare and own it.

Very cool! Wish I had the courage. Although I think that has happened on accident a few times 🙂

Melissa you could totally rock it! Just for fun, if you hate it, just don’t dye more than you are willing to cut.

I can already tell just from the couple of posts you’ve done on here that I like you! Your so sassy…love it!

Yours and your bestie’s locks are gorgeous. This would be fun even with temporary color for going out or for the weekend!

    • Whit on July 25, 2012 at 4:31 pm

Thanks so much Kristen! They do have temporary color you can do yourself even for the weekend! Do it, double dog dare you! ; )

I’ve been thinking I want to do something new with my hair…I might have to go this route.

How cute! It looks super good on blonds!

I did this after separating from the Air Force last summer. I have natural strawberry blond hair and had never done ANYTHING to it color wise. I was terrified, but I LOVED the end result. It was great vacation hair. I thought about doing it again, but I might wait until it’s longer.

Baaahahaha!!! Love it beez! And PS – I’ve received so many compliments so that you Rikki!! Loves you big!! To those who want to test it out with the temporary colors, try colorsmash, it’s a chalk-like product that kinda reminds me of eye shadow and it will give you a good idea of what it would look like without the scariness of permanent dye…you only live once though so go big or go home

I like your fashion posts! Sometimes, fashion world can be very serious / strict about style, what’s in season, designers, etc. while you’re just HAVE FUN, BE YOURSELF, WOOHOO! It’s very refreshing 🙂

    • Whit on July 25, 2012 at 6:53 pm

Aww thank you so much! That reallly means a lot. 🙂

This is Awesome! I love all things hair. If only the office 9-5 world would accept something like this 🙁

    • Whit on July 26, 2012 at 12:50 pm

Hey Abby, I am totally in the office 9-5 world, luckily PR focused, but I just ask for forgiveness and not permission. 😉

I have dip dyed my ends myself twice so far! Once last summer and I bleached the ends first so the color popped (i did blue, pink, and purple too!) This summer I didn’t bleach it but i still like the subtle change in my ends:) It makes me happy whenever i see it:):):)

i have pictures on my instagram @aforsh

I absolutely LOVE this look, but I’m curious… how much does a dip-dye at a salon like this typically cost? Also, I love your guest posts & am looking forward to reading more! 🙂

    • Whit on July 26, 2012 at 12:56 pm

Hey Elizabeth, depends on the salon, but typically around $45-65. And worth every penny! If you are in the San Diego area, look up Rikki with hairyagosd.com 😉

  13. Melissa (Better Fit) on July 26, 2012 at 4:47 am

It looks fantastic! Not sure it would work on my curly hair- but I love the idea.

  14. Lea on July 26, 2012 at 6:59 am

I love the way it came out! I used to have a full head of purple hair, and I miss it sometimes, but I definitely don’t miss keeping up my roots, so this would be perfect!

  15. Jessica on July 26, 2012 at 10:16 am

    Very cute! Any non-permanent suggestions?

    • Whit on July 26, 2012 at 12:54 pm

Hey Jessica! Savannah says “try colorsmash, it’s a chalk-like product that kinda reminds me of eye shadow and it will give you a good idea of what it would look like without the scariness of permanent dye…you only live once though so go big or go home.”

Love your hair! It looks sooo cool! Also where did you get your watch? I love it!

    • Whitney on July 30, 2012 at 2:29 pm

Thank you Sarah! It is actually a Freestyle Shark Watch, and I had my eye on it forever and my hubs surprised me with it for Valentine’s Day. I am sure you can find it online somewhere. It’s mens by the way.
