Whitney: When the Going gets Messy, Mess it Up Some ‘Mo

Hi <3 I’m really excited to welcome another good friend to the fashion page, who will be blogging over here with Meg (I’ll be crashing the party every now and again with fab finds and hair tutorials): Whitney. I first met Whitney when the Pilot and I were in San Diego for our babymoon, and she’s the kind of rare beauty that seems like you’ve known her forever the first time you hang out. We hung out with her and her hubby when we visited La Jolla a few weeks ago, got to talking about blog stuff, and I invited her over here. I hope you love her posts and give her a warm welcome to the fashion page <3

Hi Fitnessista readers! My name is Whitney and I am here to talk fashion. I am writing to you all from the sunny skies of San Diego, where I live a vegetarian life fueled by protein shakes and good times. I grew up as an athlete, playing softball most of my life, in college and in the “pro” leagues in Europe. And by “pro” I mean they paid me enough to live and play in Italy, delaying my immersion into the real world, but allowing me to find my true greatest loves: wine, fitness, health and fashion.

I’ve never considered myself a fashionista, but have always lived by one rule: If you look good, you feel good, if you feel good, you do good. And this applies to all aspects of my life. I cannot tell you how many times I got yelled at for wearing a haute pink sports bra or a glittery head band in the weight room during college.

My fashion philosophy is simple, do not take yourself too seriously, make yourself feel good, whether that is with bright colors, pink nail polish, you name. But actually FEEL good. The most important thing I learned while living in Italy was that the most beautiful, sexy, attractive and impressive thing a girl can wear is confidence (more on this philosophy soon). So when you throw on that bandana, cutoff shorts, or rock a side pony just because, own it. It’s about embracing who you are and being empowered by what you wear.

[My Canadian teammate Jenny, my Italian sister from another mister Andrea, and Me:

Now that you know a little bit about me, let’s talk about getting ready in the morning, quickly and beautifully after you’ve worked out. Today I woke up a bit late, busy week at work and so I purposely slept with a long braid hoping for something fancy to wake up to in the AM. I hit up a long run with my braid in, long down my back like Katniss of course.

In the shower I lightly washed my bangs because they like to grease ball it up, blew dry them straight and had a good 10 minutes to get out the door. 10 minutes in my mind actually equates to 30 minutes in real time, so today was a panicked rush. We started with this messy pony tail thinking this would be enough to get on with my day.

I thought a simple braid wrapped around my pony tail and secured with a few pins would suffice. But we was still lookin’ a haute mess.

When I have a messy hair day like this, I purposely keep messing it up as if to appear I did it on purpose and avoid stink eye from co-workers, etc. (Which even if they stunk-eyed me, wouldn’t probably care that much, but I do try to be professional within reason). So I did as any addicted Pinner would, I kept braiding. And actually braided in a messy fashion on purpose since I did not want to have competing textures at this point.

Messy braid

  • Big thick pieces, not worrying about fly aways and letting them wrap in randomly
  • Secure with a clear elastic band at the bottom
  • Then right at the bottom of your braid underneath the band, pull the braid in half and up to tighten and thicken.
  • Do the same just below the top of your braid to add volume to the top!
  • Get your donk to work and smile!

This is beyond adorable! I love the messy-look when it comes to hair but I’ve found that it’s actually kind of difficult to master. Thanks for the how-to!
