“You Can’t Milk an Almond”

Hi guys 😀 Happy Saturday! Sorry I’m a little late posting… I slept in and had a training appointment 🙂

Last night was so much fun. We met some friends at Creekside Tavern for dinner and drinks. I ate the exact same thing I had last time, but didn’t take pics because two of the wives were new and I didn’t want to be like, “Hi, nice to meet you, may I photograph your appetizer?” 😉 So I drank club soda with lime, ate shrimp and asparagus and a thousand calamari. They were fried. And delicious 😀

Bfast this morning:

bfast

Protein oats with blueberry, maca and bananner:

oats

and 2 egg whites with apricot jam:

egg

The pilot was complaining because we were out of milk for his cereal, so I told him to have almond milk. His response: You can’t milk an almond. Punk 😉 He ate his cereal with the almond milk and didn’t seem to have a prob with it…. 😀

Snack:

bomb

The plan for the day:

TURBOFIRE

-Dog park

-re-planting cilantro, basil and swiss chard (BUGS ate all of them! Any tips for natural herb protection??)

-INDIAN with pilot and friends <3

Enjoy your day!

xoxo,

Gina

i have been loving the chocolate cherrybomb protein icecream variants lately. i am going to try to make a ‘german chocolate’ one with almonds, pecans (maybe it should be walnuts? haha) , and coconut. and lol @ the almond milking thing 🙂

    • Fitnessista on July 10, 2010 at 1:35 pm

let me know how it turns out- i love german chocolate creations 🙂

Hahaa….my brothers girlfriend askes me the SAME thing the other day….she asked me if I got my milk from WHole Foods…and I told her I drank almond milk…and made my own..she was like “how do you milk an almond” LOL.

    true story.

That’s a funny comment, and he’s right… I’m the same way about taking pictures of food in front of people I don’t know. Even though it’s a good topic of conversation and no one ever minds, I still feel strange!

    • Fitnessista on July 10, 2010 at 2:02 pm

exactly- i knew they would be cool about it but i didn’t want to be known as the food photographer girl 🙂

  6. Lauren @ BIOCHEMISTA on July 10, 2010 at 2:08 pm

Just ordered Turbofire! SO excited!!! 🙂

    • Fitnessista on July 10, 2010 at 3:40 pm

so cool! i hope you love it 🙂

I put garlic cloves in my herbs to keep bugs and/or squirrels away. It works pretty well. My aunt grows mint with her savory herbs and swears that is the way to keep pests out.

    • Fitnessista on July 10, 2010 at 3:40 pm

      excellent idea- thank you!

  8. Jessica @ How Sweet It Is on July 10, 2010 at 2:24 pm

My hubby always fought me on almond milk because he doesn’t like almonds. Then we were out of cows milk and he tried it and loved it! Couldn’t tell the difference. 😉

  9. Alycia @ Fit n Fresh on July 10, 2010 at 2:32 pm

Those protein oats look yummy! How do you always get your egg puffs so perfect?!

    • Fitnessista on July 10, 2010 at 3:40 pm

this one i cooked in a skillet instead of a microwave- i just heat it on medium, add the egg whites, cook until the bottom is done and flip!

  10. Danielle (Runs on Green) on July 10, 2010 at 2:37 pm

hahah someone has said that to me before! My roommates were having a party and some guy was looking for beer & when he opened our fridge he just stared at the almond milk…and then finally yelled (very loud) “how do you milk an almond?!”

  11. maren on July 10, 2010 at 3:11 pm

hah i make my own almond milk and my boyfriend thinks it is far less superior than his whole milk as well. silly boys

  12. Jessica @ The Process of Healing on July 10, 2010 at 3:14 pm

Oh I LOVE almond milk! And calamari? Does it get better than calamari?!

  13. Emily @ Emilyeatsclean on July 10, 2010 at 3:25 pm

You really are Indian-food obsessed, aren’t you?? 🙂 You’re oats look delic!

    • Fitnessista on July 10, 2010 at 3:38 pm

      you have no idea 😉

  14. amber@SAHM's musings on July 10, 2010 at 3:33 pm

I’m not much of a gardener. I’m growing tomatoes and now have these weird bugs all over my tomatoes. My dad told me to plant some rosemary with them or get some marigolds to put near them and that should help. I don’t know if that would help you but it’s worth a try.

BTW what type of protein powder/mix do you use?

    • Fitnessista on July 10, 2010 at 3:39 pm

usually i use sun warrior but i ran out and am waiting for my stash to get here! right now i’m using nutribiotic- not quite as good
      thank you for the tip!

  15. Lindsay M on July 10, 2010 at 3:38 pm

I use vegetable oil mixed with water and spray your plants liberally all over. Worked for my basil and tomato plants.

  16. Liz @ Tip Top Shape on July 10, 2010 at 3:39 pm

haha, what your pilot said is too funny. I tried almond milk for the first time a couple weeks and when I first tasted it I couldn’t get over how almondy it actually tasted. And then I remembered that, yes, it was made of almonds so an almondy taste was probably not strange, haha.

I know how you feel about the photography thing, too. I just started my blog and always feel a bit odd at first when I whip out my camera. My friends are all starting to get used to it though 😀

    • Fitnessista on July 10, 2010 at 3:41 pm

my friends are totally cool about it, but i always feel weird in front of people i’ve just met

  17. Kilee on July 10, 2010 at 3:55 pm

Sorry, I’ve been away for so long. Thanks for all the fun tips and goodies! Have a great weekend & fun with the pilot!

  18. Karyn on July 10, 2010 at 3:58 pm

for some reason the title of the post reminded me of “meet the parents” and the whole milking a cat thing haha!! gotta re-watch it now 🙂

  19. Rosey Rebecca on July 10, 2010 at 4:14 pm

Love your plates. And the fact that you said “chocolate cherry bomb dot com” I love your posts so much! 🙂

  20. Krystina on July 10, 2010 at 4:18 pm

You have me craving Indian food so bad lately! What Indian restaurants do you recommend in Orlando?

  21. Lisa on July 10, 2010 at 4:25 pm

I never thought about how you can’t “milk an almond” but your pilot is right. Though I do love my almond milk!

How do the eggs taste w/jam? I have only ever had eggs w/veggies or cheese but that gets boring and they are such good protein that I’d love to mix it up. Do you only use the apricot? Or other flavors too? Thanks!

  22. Ellen@FirednFabulous on July 10, 2010 at 4:27 pm

Your cuteness kills me! And those oats look SO good. Oatmeal always excites me, I have no idea why. I eat it almost every day AND I’ve started making egg puffs for bfast because of you 😉

  23. GirlonRaw on July 10, 2010 at 4:37 pm

Apparently if you keep your garden ‘bird friendly’ (ie bird feeder etc), you won’t have a problem with bugs. Give it a try 🙂

  24. Charlie@CharlieGirlBlog on July 10, 2010 at 4:41 pm

I’m having Indian too! Yay for us!

  25. Beth on July 10, 2010 at 5:11 pm

Plant marigolds in your garden, as a previous commenter replied. They work fairly well, depending on the type of bug.

I tried your garlic gold stuff when you had the special and oh my — it’s fantastic! I love the salt one especially. I’m going to try that vinegarette next.

And, my friends are all fired up about the fi-yah, and I’m so tempted, but also so uncoordinated and found turbo jam to be not much of a workout for me since I couldn’t do her moves very well. I saw your clip and I thought, well that’s not so bad…. I can do that! And then I remembered you teach zumba and hence catch on to these things quickly. Still very tempted…. I will probably cave before too long…..

oh, and on the bird-friendly garden…. we have plenty of birds, and still bugs….. fwiw……

  26. highonhealthy on July 10, 2010 at 5:12 pm

Hey now! You can definitely milk an almond.. it’s just.. not the same way you milk a cow. I’m glad your hubster seemed to like the almond milk! Maybe an eventual convert? 😉

  27. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on July 10, 2010 at 5:15 pm

“I didn’t want to be like, “Hi, nice to meet you, may I photograph your appetizer?” “—OMG so true! I am always super impressed of anyone! who goes out to really fancy dinners and shows pics of it on their blog. Sometimes I just feel like we should enjoy our dinners, put the camera away, our readers will survive and we will not look like the freaky food bloggers we really are 🙂

I have no idea if this will work outdoors, but for indoor ants, I know if you sprinkle cinnamon around your baseboards, it will keep the ants away. Not sure if it will work outdoor at all but that’s all ive got 🙂

  28. Anya @ Fitness & Sunshine on July 10, 2010 at 5:34 pm

Yikes! Good luck with your plants! I love basil and cilantro.

I should try jam on egg whites… never done that before. And I think my boyfriend feels the same way about almond milk as your pilot. 🙂 When I switched to almond milk though (about a month ago), I found it tastier and had no problem with it.

  29. Cassie @ A Very Busy Mind on July 10, 2010 at 6:21 pm

Ah Pilot! What a little shithead. 😉

Haha what a punk! But I know that’s exactly what my naval academy man would say. I got him making me tahini sauce right now 😉

    Ahaha, I lurve the pilot’s comments 😛

Those boys need to learn not to knock it til they try it! Pretty soon we’ll have them all eating our weird health foods! 😉

  33. *Andrea* on July 10, 2010 at 9:06 pm

haha love the pilot’s remark! when i first bought almond/rice milks my mom and sister were laughing hysterically and continually corrected me for calling it almond/rice milk because it isn’t milked lol.

i need to try this egg white/jam combo! i’m seeing it everywhere on blogs

  34. Krista on July 10, 2010 at 9:39 pm

I used bitter apple spray on my plants to keep the cats away from it. Not sure if that will work on bugs, though!

  35. A Teenage Gourmet on July 10, 2010 at 9:48 pm

I froze myself some cherries for that chocolate cherry bomb. . . I’ll be getting right on that. 😉

  36. Jenna @ Healthy. Happy. Well. on July 10, 2010 at 9:51 pm

ha, that sounds like something my friends would say. Punk is right! It is so delicious!

It might depend on what kind of bugs (do you know??) but the Candid RD just recently posted a natural pesticide! Maybe give it a try?

        Welcome!

I mixed some up to put on my veggie garden and from what I can tell — it IS working 😉

  38. Paige (Running Around Normal) on July 10, 2010 at 10:11 pm

LOL I’m pretty sure my husband said the same thing. Punks indeed!
I had Indian food for dinner tonight too! Got the yellow dal and it was fantastic!

  39. Courtney on July 11, 2010 at 11:39 am

Hi Gina…….I always read your blog but I never really comment! Not sure why but I am going to be better starting now. I really love Neem for my garden. Organix South has a Neem for the garden and when my rose was attacked by aphids the neem made them disappear and the rose was gorgeous. Try it and see what you think, they have been using it in India for hundreds of years! Your blog is the best!

    • Fitnessista on July 11, 2010 at 3:29 pm

      thank you! 🙂

  40. Courtney @ Sweet Tooth, Sweet Life on July 12, 2010 at 1:59 pm

Haha, still can’t get the hubby to try my almond milk!
For your garden, I’m not sure if it works the same with herbs, but my dad always used to put human hair in his vegetable garden to keep animals away. I know it sounds weird, but my mom (who’s a hairdresser) said that people actually will request to take “cut hair” from the salon and bring it home for their gardens. Might be worth a shot – if you can get your hands on some human hair! 😉

  41. Dee on July 12, 2010 at 2:56 pm

I pulled an almond-milk fast one on my bf who had no interest in trying it. I went to make smoothies and discovered we were out of the vanilla yogurt I use to make his. I use almond milk for mine, and I thought, rather than disappoint on the smoothies, I’ll just make his with almond milk too.

He enjoyed every sip, and then I told him, I guess you like almond milk after all!
