the firefighter special

Hi friends! How was your weekend? Hope you had a great one! We had some fun adventures with friends, spent lots of time relaxing at the house, and also got quite a few of the supplies for Livi’s new room. I’m excited to see it come together! Word to the world: Ikea on a Saturday is not for the faint of heart. I live for shopping chaos, but that’s a different level.

Me and miss p

(P and I were celebrating that we got out of pajamas before noon.)

Friday afternoon, I had my doc appointment and headed straight to Whole Foods since it was in the neighborhood and everything. 😉 I got some food to grill + two bottles of rosé. The Pilot poked fun at my wine choice, and said maybe we could go to prom afterwards. P surprised us with a late afternoon nap, so Livi and I scoured the yard for snails (it was easy; they’re everywhere),

She loves snails

played “basketball” on the patio (aka tossed lemons into her toy shopping cart)

and hung out while the Pilot grilled dinner. It was the perfect weather to eat outside, and Miss P woke up just in time to enjoy her bottle and some bites of sweet potato with us. 🙂

Saturday morning, the Pilot took Liv to the gym while P and I hung out here at home. We ventured to Ikea, which was pure insanity, and then a highlight of the weekend was dinner at the Station 15 fire station!

Betsy and Jeremy won this event for 4 adults + unlimited kids at the kiddos’ school auction, so they invited us to bring the girls and join them. The kids received a tour of the fire station,

The tour

played in the fire engine,

knocked down a target with the water hose,

and we were all treated to dinner cooked by the firemen. (Swoon. I mean, delicious. haha.)

Taco salad

The kiddos had hot dogs, while the adults enjoyed the fire station special. This is the classic meal at all of the local stations: taco salad. I had mine minus the meat, and it was amazing: crushed corn chips with veggies and salsa. The taco meat smelled incredible. Apparently the secret is to enjoy the taco salad with ranch and salsa as the dressing. The Pilot ate his salad the suggested way, and said it was awesome.

The kids were SO into it and had a blast.

Miss P couldn’t even handle the excitement. 🙂

We went back home and had both kids in bed by 8:40. Usually P is out before 7, but our little night owl usually takes more convincing, since she is the master of delay tactics. She was absolutely crashed after a full day and evening. The Pilot and I were able to enjoy a movie, so we decided to watch Ex Machina. He had mentioned to me that he rented it a few weeks ago and thought I would enjoy it, but I had no intention of watching it because the title made me think it was a Terminator-type movie. It is NOT like that at all. It has more to do with artificial intelligence and is the kind of plot that’s instantly intriguing without being super action-packed or violent. (I like action movies but wasn’t really feeling it that night.) It’s one of those movies where you finish it and are trying to figure out what happened after it’s over. That’s all I’m saying.

Sunday, we met up with our friends Josh and Sam and their two girls at Belmont Park. Both of our daughters are months apart in age with theirs, so it’s pretty adorable to see them all together.

How sweet are these little friends?

Liv and isa

The girls rode all of the rides their height would allow, and we had a delicious brunch at Draft. There’s something pretty magical about hanging out with friends, a spicy Bloody Mary, and the waves crashing against the shore. I’m not-so-secretly hoping they forget about us out here and we don’t get assigned to move. A girl can dream, right?

Bloody mary

For my entree, I got the egg white scramble with goat cheese and stole a thousand of the Pilot’s potatoes.

After Mission, I GOT TO GO TO WORK!!!! It was just for CPR training, but man, it felt nice to be in the gym again. 😉

This morning, we’re off to the park since the weather has been so awesome, and I’m also going to put together some ideas for Summer Shape Up. It will be here before we know it!

See ya later today with a popular reader’s request of lately: how to take a medical break from the gym without losing your mind.

Happy happy Monday, friends!

xoxo

If you could live anywhere, would you choose where you are currently? What was the best part of your weekend?

Something to do: This workout! It’s a quick and sweaty circuit you can do anywhere.

Happy Monday!!!! Livi is so brave to hold the snails. I am terrified of everything!

  2. Alison on April 11, 2016 at 6:57 am

We were at IKEA on Saturday also. We usually aim to get there when it opens but this time it was noon. Crazy! Not sure I would do that again.

If I could live anywhere I would probably stay right where I am in Ventura County, CA half way between LA and Santa Barbara. Everything from the beach to desert to the mountains is within 30 min to a few hours.

Retirement, though, will be in Tahoe or Mammoth Lakes area. Hiking and skiing my favorite two things.

Oregon! We moved here (Willamette Valley) 3.5 years ago from the East coast and love it. My husband has the option to move for work, so we’ve discussed the topic but can’t think of where we’d like better! Low key people, wineries galore, mountains, ocean, & mild weather in every direction.

that’s so cool- my aunt and uncle moved out there and love it

That’s so awesome! I had a similar experience as a kid and its still one of my favorite memories to this day!

If I could live ANYWHERE, it would be at my parents’ beach house. I’m so happy that my boyfriend and I are spending next week there, and the weather is looking great!

I would live in Santa Barbara or San Luis Obispo instead of Silicon Valley. I absolutely love the central coast! All our family and friends are here, though, so it keeps us from going anywhere.

The firefighter event looks so cool! I would have loved that as a kid too:)

If I could live anywhere, I think I’d live in a lake house. Or in the mountains in Colorado:)

      that sounds glorious!

Crossing my fingers for you that you will be able to stay in SD longer! I’m looking forward to your post later today. I’m having surgery later this year.

    • Fitnessista on April 11, 2016 at 11:50 am

thank you! I WISH, but it looks like we’re definitely leaving. ahhhh
i’d love to hear any of your tips in the post, too!!

I like SD. I gotta say though – Having Ikea and Costco share the same parking lot is a Nexus of craziness.

    • Fitnessista on April 11, 2016 at 11:50 am

it is pure insanity. once we did costco and ikea in one day and we were like never again

  9. Vera on April 11, 2016 at 8:08 am

I would love to live somewhere a bit warmer – Canada has some rough winters. But, most of my family is here, so I just can’t imagine leaving them, no matter how cold it gets here.

    • Fitnessista on April 11, 2016 at 11:50 am

i would live anywhere to be by fam <3

I have a thing for firefighters! I was nannying for a 1 year old girl once and a truck of 10 hot (no pun intended!) firefighters walked in to WF. I almost forgot about the sleeping child I was supposed to be watching! Major major swoon!

    • Fitnessista on April 11, 2016 at 11:49 am

yes, they are very nice 🙂

  11. Erin on April 11, 2016 at 9:29 am

That firehouse event is so cool!
I would live at a lake house in the Adirondacks 🙂
I’m an avid rose fan and I don’t understand the prom comment? Am I missing something?

    • Fitnessista on April 11, 2016 at 11:49 am

he thinks it’s old school, but i tried to tell him it was trendy

  12. Kim on April 11, 2016 at 9:57 am

What time does Liv go to bed /wake up typically? Does she still nap? We are having a major bedtime issues and it’s exhausting!

    • Fitnessista on April 11, 2016 at 11:49 am

she wakes up between 645-7 (which is great) but she goes down at 9 on a good night. she naps at school (which totally screwed up our schedule when i switched her to full days), so since then, she’s been going to bed so much later. i’m trying to bring it back, but it’s hard. she is queen of delay tactics

Looks like a you guys had a fun weekend!
That’s cool that the firemen cooked a meal for everyone. My husband is a firefighter and I’ve had their cooking. I told him I was very jealous. I feel like I need to step up my game in the kitchen at home!
So speaking of firemen and such, I have a story that might make you feel a little better about your thumb cutting incident. My husband and his shift had to go on a call a few days ago where a girl had cut her thumb while cutting up fruit and the cut triggered a seizure. Her friends called 911. So the firemen/medics get to her house and when they walked in, there were penis balloons, vibrators, and all kinds of penis shaped items everywhere. Turns out the girl was getting ready for a bachelorette party!
In the meantime, while they are dealing with the girl, some other friends showed up and actually thought the firemen were strippers! So the girls start hooting and hollering until they realize the situation. Then they were super embarrassed! Haha

    • Fitnessista on April 11, 2016 at 11:48 am

oh my gosh! uhhh that makes me so sad for the girl, but pretty hilarious about them thinking they were strippers. i seriously cracked up at that part

I would love to live somewhere with a more constant temp, like SD, but my family is here in KC and I just love seeing them too much :). Also, I’m way too cheap haha.

If we could live anywhere it would definitely be New Zealand. We went there for our honeymoon and it’s the first country I’ve ever visited that I want to return to. It’s comfortably familiar (we live in Wales in uk) but at the same time so much better! And all the Pacific islands are within reasonable flight distance!

  16. Julia @ Lord Still Loves Me on April 11, 2016 at 4:14 pm

The firemen cooked you dinner?! How fancy! Also: goat cheese + eggs are a fabulous combination!

If I could live anywhere: I’m pretty sure I’d stay here in San Diego!

  17. Sam @ Barrister's Beet on April 11, 2016 at 5:51 pm

If I could live anywhere, it would probably be Thailand or Japan! I love it there. Thailand is magical. I can’t even articulate how amazing it is there.

  18. Leah on April 11, 2016 at 9:25 pm

What a fun weekend! You make SD sound like an awesome place to live. I’d love to live part time somewhere tropical. But anywhere family is, I will be. Just need to plan many tropical getaways to make it through the dreary rains here.

  19. Emma @ Emma's Adventures on April 12, 2016 at 4:04 am

That looks so much fun to go to the fire station, why is it that even an average looking guy would be super sexy if you put him in a uniform? I love firemen and if they cooked for me too, I think I would literally melt. Sorry husband haha. If I could choose to live anywhere I wouldn’t choose where I am now. I’d have a beach, warm weather, and loads of nice restaurants to eat at 🙂

  20. Shaina on April 19, 2016 at 6:08 am

that night at the fire station looks like so much fun!! I’m so excited the kids get to grow up there now. 🙂 and I also wonder how they ever get through cooking dinner without getting interrupted by a call. I told Patrick to plan on crockpot dinners ha.
