Half marathon news + a Garmin giveaway-ENDED

Thank you so much for those of you who entered the giveaway! It has ended as of 4/5 12:48am.

HUGE congrats to the lucky winner, Morgan, who said:

I love 10Ks too! Just enough to get the endorphins going, but not too much that your legs are completely screaming the next day. ;) (Just loudly complaining.)

Stay tuned for more giveaways in the near future <3 xoxo

For a while there, I was doing ok with the half marathon distance. I was running consistently, even pushing the jogging stroller for a few long runs, feeling great, wanted to keep running/racing, and then the cold weather hit. You might have remembered the Tucson snow (!) and nothing about that made me want to run outside.

Snow 1 of 1

(I guess if you really want it and live in a freezing climate, you just suck it up and do it, but I guess I didn’t want it that badly.)

Since then, I haven’t had much motivation. I’ve gone back to my nighttime workout ways, and have been doing HIIT intervals indoors even though the weather has been so beautiful. I need to enjoy it before it’s back to 6am training run time.

Yup. “Training run.”

I’m running another half marathon, but here’s the kicker: I’m actually going to train for it.

Garmin2

[Scared bird face. You’re welcome, haha.]

For the past two races, my training was really sporadic (some times I went a few weeks in between running at all) and even with the fact that I felt ready, the races were rough, and I didn’t run as well as I’d anticipated. This time, I’m ready to be more consistent and emphasize strength training. At that time, I wasn’t consistent with strength training, which likely had a negative impact on my runs.

The race deets:

I’ll be running the Women’s Running Series Half Marathon in Tempe/Scottsdale in November.

Use the discount code “FITAZGINA” to get $10 off your registration until November 3 if you’d like to run with me!

Garmin

Here’s my plan:

-one long run a week (anything more than that, and I could overtrain with my teaching schedule) building on mileage (Sunday or Monday)

-one short run each week (Tuesday or Thursday)

-consistent strength training. I aim for 3 sessions each week, even though, realistically, I’m happy if I get two

For my training, I’ll also be using my Garmin Forerunner 10 to track distance. I love my Forerunner so much -super light and compact compared to the 305- and was so stoked when Garmin asked if I’d like to do a giveaway.

One lucky winner will receive the new Forerunner 10 in the just-released gorgeous purple color!

Garmin 1 of 1

You have two ways to enter:

1) Leave a comment and tell me your favorite running distance. I love 10ks but feel like there are less and less of them lately. Non runners: what’s your favorite outdoor workout?

2) Tweet, “I want to win a Garmin from @fitnessista #beamazing #lovemygarmin” and leave an extra comment to let me know you tweeted!

I’ll pick the winner tomorrow (4/4 at midnight EST).

Ready, set, go!

xoxo

I love 10ks too! They’re the perfect distance: enough to make it challenging and for me to feel like I can get in my groove.

  4. Kaylee on April 3, 2013 at 5:34 pm

I love to run the 5K….it’s the perfect distance to run with friends!

  5. Stacy Seraatt on April 3, 2013 at 5:35 pm

I really love the half marathon distance. It doesnt take forever to train for one and you still feel like you did something!

  6. Erin on April 3, 2013 at 5:35 pm

My go-to running distance is 5 miles if I’m out for a run around the neighborhood (can’t stand the treadmill) because I feel like I’ve gotten a good workout in and can do it again the next day without feeling fatigued. For races, I like 10Ks the best but would love to feel more comfortable running half marathons!

  7. Koko on April 3, 2013 at 5:38 pm

    5K!

  8. AshleyMD on April 3, 2013 at 5:40 pm

For the longest time I really enjoyed the 10k distance, but just recently I’ve been enjoying the second half of the half marathon distance. The first half I find a bit boring at times, but the second half, I always seem super motivated 🙂

(I’d tweet too, but I don’t have twitter!)

  9. Haley on April 3, 2013 at 5:40 pm

The knees handle 5ks so 5ks are my favorite 🙂

  10. Alison R on April 3, 2013 at 5:41 pm

I love the 10k! Short enough that it doesn’t take all day and long enough that I don’t have to sprint.

  11. sarah r. on April 3, 2013 at 5:42 pm

omg, i love that watch!! my favorite distance is a half marathon but i havent done any since baby (just turned 1….)… i gotta get on that.

  12. Elyse Godemann on April 3, 2013 at 5:43 pm

I am a big fan of the 10km. Just long enough for a challenge, but sadly more distance for hills…grrr hills.

  13. Jamie on April 3, 2013 at 5:44 pm

I mostly do triathlons, so my fave running distance would be between 5K and 10K, but I much prefer swimming and biking.

  14. Kim N. on April 3, 2013 at 5:46 pm

    I like 5k’s 🙂

  15. Amber on April 3, 2013 at 5:46 pm

10Ks are the best…speedy but you feel like you’ve accomplished something!!

  16. Aila Altman on April 3, 2013 at 5:47 pm

    10 miler!

  17. Amelia on April 3, 2013 at 5:50 pm

I think my fav is the 1/2 or the full marathon! Love that exhausted feeling you get after a long run. : )

  18. Kara on April 3, 2013 at 5:53 pm

I am training for the Disneyland half right now and would absolutely love that watch! 🙂

  19. Sarah on April 3, 2013 at 5:54 pm

I am training for my first 1/2 marathon in May. right now, I’ve been carrying my cell phone for GPS, so I’d love a watch!

  20. Shelley on April 3, 2013 at 5:56 pm

Love 5ks because there are so many all the time but really could get used to half marathons….

  21. Avery @ SBLW on April 3, 2013 at 5:57 pm

Oh my, I’ve been wanting a training watch forever! My favorite distance so far is 2 miles, simply because that’s as far as I can go, lol!

  22. Amber H on April 3, 2013 at 5:57 pm

My favorite road distance is 5K but I love trail running better. I never have a set distance trail running I just go! We just moved to Davis-Monthan in November so its nice being able to really get out and explore!!

  23. Tamara on April 3, 2013 at 5:57 pm

My fav running distance is any that is a personal best for me! Which last week was a whole 6.15km! So excited, I couldn’t even run for 2 minutes straight 6 months ago. Awesome giveaway, it would go so well with my purple running shoes…

  24. Susy on April 3, 2013 at 5:57 pm

I just started getting into running and 5Ks are pretty much it right now. The Garmin will be such a great tool to help me to keep going further with my running!!

  25. Laura on April 3, 2013 at 5:57 pm

I love 10Ks too, along with 10 mile races. I finished my first half marathon this summer right before I went and got preggo and suffered through a Minnesota winter, so I’m looking forward to getting back on the running trails this summer! A pretty purple Garmin wouldn’t hurt my motivation!

  26. Lisa Voicheck on April 3, 2013 at 5:58 pm

My favorite race length is the half marathon!

  27. Kristin on April 3, 2013 at 5:58 pm

10k and your right, there aren’t many 🙁 thanks!

I don’t necessarily pick a distance, but love to just hit the running trails in my neighborhood and just go! Although my mom and I are planning to run our first 1/2 this summer and I so look forward to just tying up the sneaks and running with no real direction!

  31. Kasey on April 3, 2013 at 6:01 pm

I love the half marathon distance. Long enough to get in a good groove, and less training commitment than a full.

  32. Lucy on April 3, 2013 at 6:03 pm

I’m still new to running at the moment running 5k is still really exciting. Haven’t made it to 10k yet.

  33. Lisa on April 3, 2013 at 6:03 pm

I’ve just recently started running so my favorite distance is a 5k seeing as I don’t run much past that distance!

  34. Elena Caceres on April 3, 2013 at 6:03 pm

My favorite running distance is a marathon. I have ran the Chicago marathon for a couple of years now, and I am excited to have just signed up for the 2013 race. Even better… My boyfriend is going to run with me this year! He has NEVER ran any kind of race. Go big or go home! We are running for a foundation that runs an elementary school in Cartegena, Colombia. We visited the school over our Winter vacation and couldn’t stop thinking out it. This will be our way to help out!

  35. Hannah on April 3, 2013 at 6:04 pm

10ks are my favorite too! I do plan on doing a half sometime in the near future, but right now the thought of that many miles gives me shivers. Baby steps!

  36. Gwen on April 3, 2013 at 6:04 pm

I have been wanting to add running to my fitness routine but need some motivation! I use to play soccer which included a ton of running but would love to run some 5ks and then maybe a 10k.

  37. Anne on April 3, 2013 at 6:05 pm

10 miler! Best race distance, not too long but just far enough. I’m 35 weeks pregnant and still running. Very, very slowly but it still feels good.

  38. Alana on April 3, 2013 at 6:06 pm

I love running with my *very* high energy australian cattle dog. We’ll do 4-5 miles, although she’s always up to herd me for another 5, at least.

  39. Liz Ashby on April 3, 2013 at 6:08 pm

My favorite distance is the good ol’ 5k! Especially the really fun ones like the color runs and the zombie runs. Second favorite would be the half marathon, but I really have to push myself to make sure I train correctly. 5k’s are easy now!

  40. Liz Ashby on April 3, 2013 at 6:09 pm

    I tweeted by the way!!!

  41. Raychel on April 3, 2013 at 6:10 pm

Right now my favorite running distance is 10k also! Working my way up to a 1/2!

  42. Sharon Bartley on April 3, 2013 at 6:11 pm

My favorite distance is 5 k! or sprints /intervals

  43. Alicia on April 3, 2013 at 6:12 pm

I’m not sure if the competition is internation, but I thought I would comment anyway 🙂
I prefer a quick 5k run if I’m running outside, if not a 20 HIIT run on the treadmil is always great.

    • Alicia on April 3, 2013 at 6:13 pm

      *international
      hahhaha

  44. Jessica K. on April 3, 2013 at 6:12 pm

    I like to run 5ks!

  45. Kelly on April 3, 2013 at 6:15 pm

Haven’t officially run a race, but 10K is definitely my favorite workout distance.

  46. Vicki Mc on April 3, 2013 at 6:17 pm

My favorite distance is the half marathon. Long enough that you feel like a badass, short enough that you can still walk the next morning 🙂

  47. Krystall on April 3, 2013 at 6:18 pm

I’ve run 2 half marathons & it’s quickly becoming my favorite distance! It takes me at least 3 miles to feel warmed up anyway & a HM is long enough to feel challenging but still manageable.

  48. Vicki Mc on April 3, 2013 at 6:18 pm

    And I tweeted!

  49. Melissa @TryingtoHeal on April 3, 2013 at 6:19 pm

I loved half marathons but after getting injured for so many years they have gone on the back burner. Now it’s all about 10ks!

  50. Courtney O on April 3, 2013 at 6:20 pm

    5k!
