Half marathon news + a Garmin giveaway-ENDED

Thank you so much for those of you who entered the giveaway! It has ended as of 4/5 12:48am.

HUGE congrats to the lucky winner, Morgan, who said:

I love 10Ks too! Just enough to get the endorphins going, but not too much that your legs are completely screaming the next day. ;) (Just loudly complaining.)

Stay tuned for more giveaways in the near future <3 xoxo

For a while there, I was doing ok with the half marathon distance. I was running consistently, even pushing the jogging stroller for a few long runs, feeling great, wanted to keep running/racing, and then the cold weather hit. You might have remembered the Tucson snow (!) and nothing about that made me want to run outside.

Snow 1 of 1

(I guess if you really want it and live in a freezing climate, you just suck it up and do it, but I guess I didn’t want it that badly.)

Since then, I haven’t had much motivation. I’ve gone back to my nighttime workout ways, and have been doing HIIT intervals indoors even though the weather has been so beautiful. I need to enjoy it before it’s back to 6am training run time.

Yup. “Training run.”

I’m running another half marathon, but here’s the kicker: I’m actually going to train for it.

Garmin2

[Scared bird face. You’re welcome, haha.]

For the past two races, my training was really sporadic (some times I went a few weeks in between running at all) and even with the fact that I felt ready, the races were rough, and I didn’t run as well as I’d anticipated. This time, I’m ready to be more consistent and emphasize strength training. At that time, I wasn’t consistent with strength training, which likely had a negative impact on my runs.

The race deets:

I’ll be running the Women’s Running Series Half Marathon in Tempe/Scottsdale in November.

Use the discount code “FITAZGINA” to get $10 off your registration until November 3 if you’d like to run with me!

Garmin

Here’s my plan:

-one long run a week (anything more than that, and I could overtrain with my teaching schedule) building on mileage (Sunday or Monday)

-one short run each week (Tuesday or Thursday)

-consistent strength training. I aim for 3 sessions each week, even though, realistically, I’m happy if I get two

For my training, I’ll also be using my Garmin Forerunner 10 to track distance. I love my Forerunner so much -super light and compact compared to the 305- and was so stoked when Garmin asked if I’d like to do a giveaway.

One lucky winner will receive the new Forerunner 10 in the just-released gorgeous purple color!

Garmin 1 of 1

You have two ways to enter:

1) Leave a comment and tell me your favorite running distance. I love 10ks but feel like there are less and less of them lately. Non runners: what’s your favorite outdoor workout?

2) Tweet, “I want to win a Garmin from @fitnessista #beamazing #lovemygarmin” and leave an extra comment to let me know you tweeted!

I’ll pick the winner tomorrow (4/4 at midnight EST).

Ready, set, go!

xoxo

My favourite is always 5K because I can bust one out on a few minutes notice without having to worry about logging long runs!

  2. Sara on April 4, 2013 at 11:42 am

I live in Boston and believe me, that snow tends to drive me straight to the treadmill! However, now that the snow is FINALLY melting, I’m back to my lovely outdoor runs. I enjoy runs that are between 6-8 miles, but I am training for a 10-miler this summer. Maybe I’ll go for a half marathon in the fall if the 10-miler goes well… 🙂

  3. Monica on April 4, 2013 at 11:42 am

My fav distance is a 5k – it always feels like the possibility of PR is closer than other races!

  4. stacy walsh on April 4, 2013 at 11:45 am

heyo! my favorite running distance is a good old 3 miles preferably on a trail (short and sweet) 🙂 love your blog! xo

  5. Kristi on April 4, 2013 at 11:45 am

My LO is 4mos old today and Spring is here! Time to stop using ‘I JUST had a baby’ as an excuse and pound some pavement! I’d love a Garmin for the extra motivation!!

  6. Carol Sherwood on April 4, 2013 at 11:48 am

I just started running recently and am following the c25k plan. I’m really looking forward to my first 5K, then 10K and eventually buiding up to a half marathon. The Garmin Forerunner 10 would be a great addition to my training.

  7. jillianandgracie on April 4, 2013 at 11:49 am

    5ks with the puppies!

  8. Sarah L. on April 4, 2013 at 11:49 am

I have a soft spot for half marathons, for sure. But, I recently did a 10K and really loved it (even though it poured rain the entire time!)

  9. Jenn on April 4, 2013 at 11:50 am

I love half marathons! It’s an awesome distance that requires a lot less of a time commitment for training runs. The three hour 20 milers during marathon training killed me…trying to stake out a free 3 hours in my busy schedule was somewhat of a joke! Trying to find a half for this summer! Good luck with keeping up your training! We’ll be rooting for you, as always

  10. Kristen on April 4, 2013 at 11:51 am

I’m a fan of 8Ks. That’s my “sweet” distance. I’m not a runner but 8Ks are pretty comfortable for me. Any farther than that, I have to really train and prepare for. I have wanted a Garmin for so long. Awesome giveaway!

  11. Lindsay on April 4, 2013 at 11:53 am

    I love a good 10K!

  12. Julie R. on April 4, 2013 at 11:57 am

I am trying to get back in running mode, so right now my favorite outdoor activity is running a mile and then doing some hill sprints after the mile run. I am hoping the nicer weather will motivate me to run longer distances.

  13. Laura @ A Girl's Gotta Balance on April 4, 2013 at 12:05 pm

I’m a 5K kinda girl. 🙂 I still consider myself a novice runner but hopefully one day I’ll make it to a half marathon!

  14. kirsten on April 4, 2013 at 12:07 pm

5k is my favorite distance 🙂

  15. Danette R on April 4, 2013 at 12:07 pm

Half marathon is the perfect distance for me. I’m a big RunDisney fan and love the pretty race bling! 🙂

  16. Laura @ A Girl's Gotta Balance on April 4, 2013 at 12:08 pm

  17. Lindsey A on April 4, 2013 at 12:10 pm

Definitely the longer distances…15K or Half so I have enough time to get into a good groove!

  18. Rachel on April 4, 2013 at 12:10 pm

My favorite running distance is 5 miles, near water. Recently, I ran a half marathon-wow was that long.

  19. Rachel on April 4, 2013 at 12:12 pm

Just letting you know that I tweeted :0)

  20. Megan G on April 4, 2013 at 12:13 pm

I love 10ks! They are short enough that I can push myself for a faster time!

  21. Haley on April 4, 2013 at 12:14 pm

What a great give away! I actually love the half marathon, it is my favorite for sure.

  22. Randyll on April 4, 2013 at 12:17 pm

Half marathons are my favorite. I’ve only done two but fell in love quickly!

  23. Ginger G. on April 4, 2013 at 12:19 pm

I’m not the best runner, so 2 miles is good for me : )

  24. Laura on April 4, 2013 at 12:19 pm

I love 10Ks! I’m not fast, so they’re just long enough to feel like a quality workout without feeling like I’m spending hours and hours training. I’ve done one half, and am registered for my 2nd this summer — just need to find the motivation to get training!!

  25. Becky W on April 4, 2013 at 12:20 pm

I love 5ks, my favorites I have done so far are the Color Run and Warrior Dash. Running is really challenging for me and so this year I have signed up for my first half marathon!

  26. Ginger G. on April 4, 2013 at 12:20 pm
  27. Melanie Kellar on April 4, 2013 at 12:28 pm

    5k is my favorite distance!

  28. Jackie on April 4, 2013 at 12:35 pm

I love 5ks because 3 miles is a distance even the most beginner runner is capable of. I have more fun during shorter races.

    I also tweeted from jfay917!

  29. Jennifer S on April 4, 2013 at 12:53 pm

I like 10ks the best. I’ve done 1 and am training for another. The perfect distance to feel like a workout…

  30. Stephanie on April 4, 2013 at 12:53 pm

I’ve maxed out at a 5k, but I’m hoping to change that this year!

  31. Carrie Volpe on April 4, 2013 at 12:55 pm

Half marathon is my favorite distance, followed closely by the 15K. They are challenging distances and require training, but the training doesn’t seem like a part time job (like marathon training does!).

    Have a great day!

  32. Amy on April 4, 2013 at 12:56 pm

I love 5ks and half marathons! They are two totally different beasts, but they both challenge me.

  33. Kathleen on April 4, 2013 at 12:56 pm

I love half marathons! I am going to train for a full this year, so maybe I will live those too!

  34. Hilary on April 4, 2013 at 12:59 pm

My favorite distance is 5 miles and 10ks!

  35. Amanda H on April 4, 2013 at 12:59 pm

I love 5ks, they are easy to get other people to join you. The distance is great, so I don’t have to train to run it, but I always make great improvements with training.

  36. Jess on April 4, 2013 at 1:02 pm

Favourite running distance is definitely 10k.
    LOVE the new purple colour!!

  37. Laura on April 4, 2013 at 1:02 pm

I’m a big fan of half marathons! I find the training almost as much fun as the race itself. It gives me hours to zone out and listen to music. 🙂

  38. Kristen J on April 4, 2013 at 1:03 pm

At this point, I just love any opportunity to run! I’m trying to get back in real running shape after the birth of my little girl with the help of a jogging stroller. Back in college racing days my favorite races were 5 and 10ks. Although, I eventually would love to run longer races. Thanks for the motivation to keep on running!

  39. Jenny on April 4, 2013 at 1:06 pm

When my knee isn’t bothering me, I love 5ks that offer good t-shirt giveaways : ) Other favorite outdoor exercise is hiking!

  40. Rae on April 4, 2013 at 1:07 pm

    I love 5Ks!

  41. Aila A. on April 4, 2013 at 1:09 pm
  42. Erin on April 4, 2013 at 1:25 pm

I like 10Ks best – you have enough time to get into a running zone but it’s not too long that you get intimidated. Great idea for a giveaway!

  43. Chrissy on April 4, 2013 at 1:32 pm

I’m not a runner, so I would have to say hiking is my favorite outdoor exercise.

  44. Valerie on April 4, 2013 at 1:38 pm

I have not run in any races, my favorite way to run is back home in North Dakota on a quiet dirt road where I can clear my head.

  45. Vivian on April 4, 2013 at 1:49 pm

    Walking or hiking!

I like a 5k. I’m pretty slow so a longer race just feels like it takes forever!

  48. Jackie on April 4, 2013 at 2:01 pm

I love running 5K’s with my husband. I enjoy running slightly longer distances than he does, so this is a perfect medium for the both of us. 🙂

  49. Tonya @ Will Run For Yoga on April 4, 2013 at 2:05 pm

I love 13.1! Marathon training will take all of your time but training for a half is achievable for almost anyone.
