Smoky Maple Roasted Almonds

Smoky maple roasted almonds

Canada supplies 80% of the world’s maple syrup, and whenever friends or family visit Canada, I ask them to bring back some of the good stuff. I’ll never forget when one of my elementary school teachers went for a vacation and told us about maple syrup she ate mixed with snow. I’ve been dreaming about it ever since 😉

We’ve been enjoying the syrups in our usual family dishes, but for my recipe creation, I thought it would be fun to test them out with a savory snack recipe. I love maple syrup on my protein pancakes and as a marinade for maple-orange salmon, but had a bag of almonds that were destined to be coated in a sweet and smoky mix.

I’m always on the prowl for new snack ideas, especially since my purse usually has to have a few options to choose from. One of our favorite snacks is homemade trail mix, and I recently discovered how much Livi likes crunchy snacks, like pretzels and nuts. (I used to be horrified of giving her these for choking reasons, but she’s to the point now where she chews her food extremely well and I still watch her like a hawk.)

Not only are these almonds a super addicting snack idea, they’re also a fun party or gift option! Just add some to a pretty bag and gift to someone you love.

Bonus: they’re also glorious on salads with greens, chopped veggies and goat cheese.

A sweet and smoky portable snack combo- also delicious on salads!

  • Prep Time: 10
  • Cook Time: 30
  • Total Time: 40
  • Yield: 12 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 oz roasted or raw almonds
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/81/4 teaspoon cayenne
  • 1/4 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees and coat a cookie sheet with aluminum foil.
  2. In a medium saucepan, heat the butter on medium low, then add your maple syrup and spices.
  3. Stir to combine and then add the almonds. Toss to coat well.
  4. Spread the almond mixture onto the cookie sheet in one even layer.
  5. Bake for 30 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes.
  6. Remove the almonds from the oven and set to cool for about one hour.
  7. Store covered for up to a week.

    Big fan of maple syrup (the REAL stuff, of course) and honey as sweeteners. I made some maple glazed Brussels sprouts a couple weeks ago that were delicious.

    I love maple syrup and honey. I make brussels with maple syrup and pecans that is perfect. And maple syrup on salmon is the besttttt.

      Yep! It’s the sweetener I use in almost all of my dessert recipes

    I live in Canada and have been to a sugar bush (where they make the syrup) a few times – we went as a class trip many times growing up! The stuff your teacher had us called “sugar on snow” and it’s so so much better than just maple syrup on snow. It’s boiled down maple syrup so it’s thicker and gooier. And the flavour is more concentrated! They pour it on snow and it firms up a bit like taffy. You eat it with a Popsicle stick off of the snow. It’s soooooooo good! Your recipe looks awesome!

    These look great! I just made roasted chili lime roasted almonds as Christmas gifts for the family, but this would have been a nice alternative take. I’ll have to give it a shot soon 🙂

    I’m a big fan of salty and sweet. I usually put a little bit of maple syrup on my sweet potato for dinner. It helps with not craving something sweet after dinner. So good!

    Your salad idea with goat cheese sounds amazing. I love nuts in a salad. They make everything so much better. Especially when they taste like maple.
