Juicy Girl

Hey everyone! Thanks so much for your awesome feedback on the “Getting Started” post 🙂 Hope your Indian Food Wednesday has been going well.

As ya’ll know, I’m a Juicy Girl.

Not just this kind of juicy:

ny

(There is a scary amount of Juicy hoodies in my closet)

THIS kind of juicy:

juice

I’ve been juicing everything under the sun today, which I full attribute to the GLORIOUS weather.

It started out this morning, when I made a raw vegan Red Bull (aka green juice) before walking the puppers:

IMG00122-20100324-0854

Into the mix went:

-1 cucumber

-lots of spinach

-4 kale ribs

-a green apple

-1/2 lemon

-pear

-1/2 t spirulina

All organic. All delicious.

green juice

The puppies hide when I turn the juicer on… I think they’re afraid I might juice them.

vies

I would never 😀

The pilot had an orange-apple juice, we walked the puppies for 30 minutes, munched breakfast and then Ashley and I hit up a local farmer’s market.

In other words, Publizzle lost a lot of business today—the produce was so FRESH and inexpensive.

I took a blurry Crackberry pic.. didn’t want to get in trouble my first time in there for snapping pictures

IMG00124-20100324-1228

The prices were seriously out of control.

-bunches of collard greens for .79

-3 lbs sweet potatoes for $1

-pint of strawberries, $1

-local honey, $5.99 for a giant jar

-and other ridiculous deals

I bought a bunch of produce for the juicer and for my face (plums, strawberries, avocado, apples, pears, sweet potatoes) and honey for the pilot..and spent $11!! CRAZY. I’ll be back fo sho.

Ashley and I came back to my casa, lounged by the pool for an hour and then I made smoothies and juice for us.

She had a Spice-C smoothie (recipe from 105degrees)

spicec

And I had a small taster of the Spice-C with a juice made of carrots, beet, ginger, cayenne and death. It tasted so bad.. definitely needs an apple in there next time, or some Stevia.

juice

We met Jeni at the gym and dominated our backs for an hour. I’m going to be pleasantly sore tomorrow 🙂

I get asked pretty often what my favorite juice recipes are. The thing is, I’m not that creative when it comes to juices.. I usually roll with the green juice mentioned above –if I’m feeling crazy, I’ll add some parsley- or carrot, apple, beet. I’d love to get more creative! What are you favorite juice recipes??

Well I’m off to work, then INDIAN!!! Wahoo! 🙂

xoxo,

Gina

Oh you are so lucky! I wish produce was that cheap around here!!

  2. Shelly on March 24, 2010 at 4:53 pm

Haha I love it when you tell us when one of your concotions doesn’t turn out so well. It makes me giggle. 🙂
We have a couple of good farmer’s markets where I live that I should take more advantage of but I hate waking up early on a Sat. to get there before they close at 10. I’m so lazy! 🙂

  3. Len on March 24, 2010 at 4:53 pm

I made the best one today!
    -2 small beets
    -3 stalks of celery
    -two apples
-and I threw a carrot in there thats was by itself and lonely in the fridge
    – and knob of ginger
    sweet but not too sweet!

  4. Lauren @ Eater not a runner on March 24, 2010 at 4:55 pm

I basically love any juice that has beets and a little ginger. yum!

  5. Heather on March 24, 2010 at 4:55 pm

I am completely jealous of your farmer’s market. We are still expecting more snow here (Wisconsin) so ours doesn’t begin until the end of May 🙁
I also LOVE that picture of Viesa. My yellow lab looks almost exactly like that when she hears the shower running, she hates baths.

  6. denise on March 24, 2010 at 4:56 pm

Kale, apple, lemon juice:) That’s my go-to!

  7. Roro on March 24, 2010 at 4:59 pm

    Hey Girl

      • Roro on March 24, 2010 at 5:23 pm

        awww don’t cry,Thank you girl
I will be going by there hopefully this weekend I hope the weather is great? I will be doing zumba in my living room lol

  8. Erica on March 24, 2010 at 4:59 pm

Ah! The farmers market opens the first Saturday in April in Charleston and I cannot WAIT! Fresh produce is the best. Happy Wednesday pretty lady 🙂

  9. Sarah Anne on March 24, 2010 at 5:00 pm

I had Indian Tuesday! (lunch AND dinner…Northern Indian for lunch, and Southern Indian for dinner! Hah!)

I’m TERRIBLE when it comes to juice. I’m not creative, and just don’t even venture into trying new things. I’ve got it set up on my counter, and need to experiment but for some reason, I’m all timid.

Now, my blender – I’ll throw anything in. But the juicer…scares me.

  10. Lauren @ BIOCHEMISTA on March 24, 2010 at 5:01 pm

I loooooove Farmer’s markets 🙂 Not sure which I like better: The goodies I bring home or the free tastings during the shopping! 😉

PS…SO jealous you are in pool-weather!

    xx

  11. Heather (Heather's Dish) on March 24, 2010 at 5:03 pm

those prices are incredible! strawberries for $1? unheard of! i don’t have any great juice recipes, but you should definitely do something with those berries!

  12. Jenny on March 24, 2010 at 5:03 pm

I love me a traditional gm with Ginger!

  13. janet on March 24, 2010 at 5:06 pm

    question…

when your knee feels better can you pleaseee do a tutorial for crows poses, that picture a few posts back looks SOOO COOL!!!!

have a happy indian food Wednesday!

    • Fitnessista on March 24, 2010 at 5:07 pm

thank you! sure i think i could do that 🙂

  14. Erin on March 24, 2010 at 5:08 pm

Oh goodness, I love the farmer’s market! It’s about that cheap here too (MN) so summer = amazing fresh produce & tons of money saved at the grocery store! Win-win 🙂

  15. Kelly on March 24, 2010 at 5:14 pm

    Wow those are amazing prices.

  16. Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg on March 24, 2010 at 5:17 pm

Ooh, I cannot WAIT for our produce stands and farmers’ markets to open up here in PA.

I think juice will be much more appealing to me in hot weather!

  17. borntocare on March 24, 2010 at 5:19 pm

I know you are steering clear of sweets right now, but do you normally eat/use any honey?

    • gina (fitnessista) on March 24, 2010 at 5:46 pm

nah. not really my thang. the pilot, on the other hand, LOVES it

  18. Naomi (onefitfoodie) on March 24, 2010 at 5:23 pm

i LOVE farmers markets, i can’t wait for the summer to go to them every week!!

Juicy hoodies are SO COMFY! I still have some I got about 5 years ago and LOVE them all 🙂

ginger and beet in juice is so good

  19. Gina on March 24, 2010 at 5:23 pm

I would be more creative if I had a juicer, but I am limited to the 5 or 6 served at the local juice bar. I wish our farmer;s market was that inexpensive, however they are likely to be equal to or more expensive than the organic sections at grocery stores. Once I paid $5 for an heirloom head of garlic:(

  20. Molly @fuelherup on March 24, 2010 at 5:26 pm

My basic juice is apple, cucumber, carrot, and celery, but I love adding lime and ginger to make it tangy and spicy!

  21. Andrea of Care to Eat on March 24, 2010 at 5:42 pm

Do you ever give the dogs juice? I started giving Basil a little bit every so often and now he whimpers and gets all excited when he sees me pull out the juicer. I’ve created a juice monster 🙂

  22. HJU on March 24, 2010 at 5:47 pm

The juice looks yummy! You might have mentioned this before and I am missing it, but do you throw in the whole piece of fruit, skin/stem/peel and all?? Thanks! 🙂

  23. em on March 24, 2010 at 6:02 pm

my absolute favorite juice combo is kale, parsley, cucumber, lots of lemon, and a generous sprinkle of cayenne on top. i’m sipping one right now!

  24. Rebecca @ How the Cookies Crumble on March 24, 2010 at 6:04 pm

I’m so jealous of your farmer’s market! I was so excited the first time I went to check out my local farmer’s market here in Las Vegas only to find a few vendors with boxed produce like they had at Walmart. Not fresh, not organic. Some of the fruits were not even ripe. Total bummer. I’ve been checking out localharvest.org to find out how I can get more fresh produce!

  25. Madison on March 24, 2010 at 6:12 pm

I love Juicy and juice! But I’ve heard so many different things about juice that for now, I am not drinking too much of it. I’ve read that it is better to eat the fruit and veggie rather than juice them because of the high concentration of natural sugar involved. What are you thoughts on that? Sorry, that sounds just like some weird interview question..haha. Thank you in advance Gina!

  26. Danielle (Coffee Run) on March 24, 2010 at 6:15 pm

3 lbs of sweet potatoes for a dollar?? That’s crazy! I need to start hitting up my farmer’s market

  27. Hannah on March 24, 2010 at 6:18 pm

What kind of back exercises do you do? I’m running out of ideas!!! I know there are rows, flies, and lower back lift things, anything else???

    • Fitnessista on March 24, 2010 at 8:29 pm

we did a really tradition workout today:
      gravitron assisted pull up
      seated row
      lat pull down
      barbell deadlift
we did 4 sets of everything

      • Hannah on March 28, 2010 at 8:28 pm

I’ll have to try some of those! Thanks! 🙂

  28. TanyaS on March 24, 2010 at 6:33 pm

My clean out the crisper juice turned out awesome the other day. Celery, beet, carrot, apple, cucumber, lemon. Just enough sweet with a little tang.

  29. christina cadden on March 24, 2010 at 6:57 pm

I have yet to make my first juice but I plan on it soon!

  30. Salah@myhealthiestlifestyle on March 24, 2010 at 6:58 pm

girl I been juicing like crazy too!! I have a blast doing it though!!!

  31. Katie on March 24, 2010 at 7:02 pm

That is crazy cheap produce! $1 for strawberries is insane!

  32. Melissa (MelissaLikesToEat) on March 24, 2010 at 7:04 pm

I never drink juices. I feel like I should but I don’t like to “drink” my food for some reason. They look so yummy though!!

  33. Katie on March 24, 2010 at 7:19 pm

    I love apple+beet+ginger+carrot!!!!!!!!!!!! Yummy!!!!!

Yay for your indian food tonight!!!! Enjoy love!!

I love juicy couture too!!! xo

  34. Kristin (Cook, Bake and Nibble) on March 24, 2010 at 7:21 pm

  35. jamie on March 24, 2010 at 7:36 pm

i JUST got my breville on friday and have been making juice every day. i freakin love it!

my bf’s favorite is tangelo, strawberry, tomato, carrot, & apple. it’s a little sweet, but really good. my fav (so far) is cucumber, romaine, celery, apple, and strawberry. the strawberries yield quite a bit of juice, and add amazing flavor. for $1 bunches of strawberries you should add them! SO good.

    • Fitnessista on March 24, 2010 at 8:28 pm

yum! i’ll add them in tomorrow morning 🙂

  36. Fancy on March 24, 2010 at 7:58 pm

Just curious about honey…do you not eat it because of the taste or nutritious reasons? I like to put it in smoothies sometimes to sweeten them up, is honey nutritiously bad for us???

    • Fitnessista on March 24, 2010 at 8:27 pm

no it’s not bad at all- especially if you measure it and make sure to not go too crazy, as it’s pretty calorie dense. for me, smoothies taste great on their own and don’t usually need sweetener

  37. Allison @ Food For Healing on March 24, 2010 at 8:07 pm

Wow awesome buys!! I can’t wait til summer comes around here for our farmers market. We just got a junk load of snow here today, so definitely nothing fresh happenin here!

I have a juicer, but never juice. Produce in Sask is too expensive. I’m sure i will be a juicing fiend in summer when i can afford to buy food.

  38. LisaG on March 24, 2010 at 8:28 pm

I’m more of a smoothie in the summer girl. I only have a blender is probably why. I think honey is good for you especially local tends to ward off allergies.

    • Fitnessista on March 24, 2010 at 8:44 pm

yes, that’s why i always try to get local. it’s pretty cool that it helps with allergies!

  39. Samantha on March 24, 2010 at 8:45 pm

MMMM those juices look sooo good!!

  40. Juli on March 24, 2010 at 9:16 pm

I LOVE lemon, spinach/kale, ginger, and apples.
I usually do half a lemon, handful of kale, an inch of ginger, and 2 organic green apples. LOVE!!! So refreshing!

  41. Suzanne on March 24, 2010 at 9:22 pm

By all means, please appropriate my “jesus tap dancing on tongue” phrase as needed to accommodate any and all delicious eat expression needs 🙂 In fact, I’ve stolen one from you; I can’t remember the exact way you said but basically its “i would eat a shoe if covered in curry” or “you could put curry on a shoe…” you get the idea. I love it. Another funny one I got off of a now defunct blog is “I’d rather eat shit off a shingle than (insert whatever).” the double sh- is fun to say Happy Hump Day!

    also…not into juice….save jungle juice 😉

    • Fitnessista on March 24, 2010 at 9:59 pm

bahaha jungle juice! i have fond and terrible memories of that 😉

  42. Kelly on March 24, 2010 at 9:37 pm

When I use my blender my dog gets absolutely terrified!!! She runs away with her tail between her legs as fast as her little legs will carry her! I always feel so bad but I just can’t give up my green monsters!

I’m jealous of you eating Indian tonight. I just made myself a boring bowl of oatmeal because I got home late. It was pretty delicious though!

    • Fitnessista on March 24, 2010 at 9:59 pm

      oatmeal is always delicious 🙂

  43. Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman on March 24, 2010 at 9:52 pm

Oh man, I really need to get a juicer!

  44. Melissa on March 24, 2010 at 10:00 pm

Wow your juices look amazing. Quick “off topic” question. I know you take a probiotic vitamin everyday…do you take it in the morning on an empty stomach or during the day with food? I’ve read conflicting directions. Thanks!!

    • Fitnessista on March 24, 2010 at 10:04 pm

i take both of my vitamins (prenatal and probiotic) right after breakfast 🙂

  45. Sara on March 24, 2010 at 10:28 pm

$1 for a pint of strawberries?!!!! DAMN!
Oh and I also own a ridiculous amount of Juicy accumulated over the years- recently I’ve been sticking to some of their chic tops and no longer buying mad amounts of velour and terrycloth (I have a collection of 15 various juicy jackets; 12 pairs of track pants…good lazy clothes I suppose ;D) and that’s not even counting all the denim minis, jewelry, tees, dresses, flipflops, younameit. haha.
    Love P&G 😉

    • Fitnessista on March 24, 2010 at 10:29 pm

hahah i’d say you win. i just stock up on tees, jewelry and hoodies! LOVE

  46. Ana (AnActive Adventure) on March 24, 2010 at 10:38 pm

Love juices!! I really like green apple+carrot+celery+Qcumber, so perfect!

  47. Becca on March 24, 2010 at 11:55 pm

“I think they’re afraid I might juice them”
This made me laugh out loud- literally! Ha ha

  48. Rawkin Robin on March 25, 2010 at 12:11 am

Yummo – I love when I make a new juice and it turns out well 🙂 Sometimes however, they can turn out nastay! My go to Juice has an orange, apple, carrots, celery. lemon, and ginger.
Question for ya – i’m training for my first Half and have been having some discomfort under my knee caps. I’ve been doing some exercises I read about to help strengthen my patellar. Also – I have 1 knee sleeve that was my mom’s and it seems to help some when I wear it, but it’s only one. I’ve tried looking at a few stores for another but can’t find a good one that provides support without being too restricting. Any tips on what to do?

    • Fitnessista on March 25, 2010 at 8:34 am

i’d probably talk to a doc. i wish i would have when my knee started bothering me at the end of training. a physical therapist or ortho might be able to tell you what you need -ask around to see if a friend of a friend is one, that’s what i do 🙂

  49. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on March 25, 2010 at 3:12 am

    From a couple posts ago:
cacao macaroons are stuffed with raw crunchy almond butter

OMG girl, you totally outdid yourself and i can only imagine that your casa was sickeningly delish smelling for like 10 hours or more! Wow. I can smell it from here 🙂

And the pic of you with Pilot in the juicy with a much more juicy looking bag (GG), yeah, love that pic!
Thanks for poppin over today to say hi, I loved seeing your sweet face in my inbox!

    xoxo
    🙂

  50. Heather on March 25, 2010 at 8:51 am

    Mmmmm! looks good! I have a question tho’, why do you save the ribs for the juicer and use the leaves for smoothies? Just curious =}

    • Fitnessista on March 25, 2010 at 8:57 am

i eat the leaves (in kale chips or salad) but instead of throwing the ribs away, i juice them. i never make smoothies with the leaves- it tastes terrible to me, haha
