Not so Lovely

Heyyyyyy 😀 Happy Saturday to ya! Hope you’re having a fabulous weekend so far. I love all of the awesome discussion that went down on the last post regarding Biggest Loser and the Jill-meister. Ya’ll are a bunch of intelligent and amazing ladies (and dudes!).. just in case you didn’t already know 😉

We met up with some friends last night at 306 North, which is the second best place to eat in Valdizzy. (Indian is first, but it’s CLOSED for maintenance right now! I did cry a little)

I’m trying to avoid having wine for the 6 weeks of Winter Shape Up, but decided that it would be a good Friday treat.

I just love Shiraz so much 😀

The pilot and I split our favorite appetizer, the goat cheese fritters with celery heart, green apple and balsamic reduction

Salad with balsamic on the side

The BEST restaurant bread everrrr. Multigrain, freshly made, buttery splendor (somehow it missed the camera’s eye??).

And my entree, the vegetable plate with sweet potatoes instead of white:

Amazing 😀

After dinner, everyone else got Marble Slab –I held off since I was stuffed, and they don’t offer Coconut Bliss- and then the guys went to see Book of Eli while Jeni and I saw The Lovely Bones. We give it two almond butter-covered thumbs down. It was very different from the book and some parts in which they were trying to be artistic, just came off as weird. The book is a million times better.. isn’t that always the case, though? I have yet to see a movie that’s as good as the book.

We came back to the casa, and as soon as I went to bed, I knew I wasn’t going to make it for the run Meara and I had planned for 7:30 this morning. After such a crazy week, my body was begging me to sleep in a little. I’m hoping she’ll run with me later this afternoon when I get off work. Running alone isn’t as fun, and the pilot’s knee has been bothering him.

Bfast was GREEN OATS!

oats

I added 1/2 t spirulina to the regular 1/2 cup oats, 1/2 scoop Sun Warrior vanilla and smashed banana mix. I couldn’t even taste the spirulina, and it gave the oats a light green tint.

With an egg puff (2 egg whites microwaved in a glass bowl) topped with red chili and garlic powder.

I’m off to train four clients and do a nutritional consultation! Have a wonderful day <3

xoxo,

Gina

Good luck with training the clients and the nutritional consultation, a silly question but what is spirula?

  2. Susan on January 23, 2010 at 10:30 am

    Oops I mean spirulina?

  3. Jessica @ How Sweet It Is on January 23, 2010 at 10:32 am

Aw I’m bummed the movie wasn’t good! I really loved that book.

  4. Jessica @ The Process of Healing on January 23, 2010 at 10:33 am

OMG goat cheese fritters? Where have they been all my life?! Sounds fantastic. And sometimes, you just gotta have your wine 😉

  5. Nicci on January 23, 2010 at 10:40 am

The book is better, but I enjoyed the movie.

  6. Joane on January 23, 2010 at 10:54 am

I’m sad that movie wasn’t good, but I heard Book of Eli was good. Your dinner looks great!

  7. Melissa (MelissaLikesToEat) on January 23, 2010 at 11:06 am

Your dinner looks great!! That’s a long time to go without wine. 🙂 I had to do it twice for 9 months for both pregnancies so I know it’s possible but not fun. 🙂

  8. simpledaisy on January 23, 2010 at 11:09 am

I could not give up vino for 6 weeks!! Good for you for trying:)
All of the food looks fabulous~

  9. Mara @ What's For Dinner? on January 23, 2010 at 11:29 am

Goat cheese fritters?! Yes please!! Bummer about the movie, i loved the book!

  10. LindsayRuns on January 23, 2010 at 11:42 am

That dinner looks awesome. Ok, I totally don’t believe you when you say Valdosa is a crappy town, you’ve got great stuff there!

  11. Run Sarah on January 23, 2010 at 11:44 am

Have an awesome day! That veg plate looks amazing. You inspire me to ask for subs at restaurants!

  12. Janna (Just Flourishing) on January 23, 2010 at 11:58 am

Thanks for the heads up about The Lovely Bones!

Now I want an egg puff. I may have to just go make one!

  13. Kelly Michelle on January 23, 2010 at 12:07 pm

I make my egg whites just like you (well when I feel lazy otherwise I use the stovetop) but anyways when you beat the egg whites you can mix the garlic powder and chili powder right in, that’s what I have always done and then you get the flavor throughout, and if you beat in a splash of almond milk vanilla or regular, you can’t taste it and the eggs will be even fluffier

    • Fitnessista on January 23, 2010 at 3:29 pm

GENIUS idea. i’ll totally be trying that!

  14. Gabriela on January 23, 2010 at 12:22 pm

That dinner looks so good! I’m always amazed at how you manage to find such healthy and yummy options when eating out…major kudos! I want to see the Lovely Bones, but I love the book so much that I don’t want to be let down by a bad movie!

  15. Alicia on January 23, 2010 at 12:23 pm

People who say that they don’t like veggies need to read your blog and see the pictures in this post, as well in the ones where you make the food at home. It’s amazing how the right preparation of such great ingredients can make your mouth water as much as a ribeye – at least for us meat eaters!

  16. Amanda (Two Boos Who Eat) on January 23, 2010 at 12:27 pm

yeah I gave the movie two thumbs down too! So many things about it bothered me! And it didn’t help that I reread the book the day before seeing the movie.

  17. Sara on January 23, 2010 at 12:33 pm

Your dinner looks fantastic! Too bad Indian was closed though- that’s what I had last night 😉

  18. Marissa on January 23, 2010 at 12:50 pm

    Sorry the movie wasn’t good!

  19. Jenny on January 23, 2010 at 12:58 pm

I love shiraz too! such a nice accompaniment to any meal 🙂

I was disappointed by the Lovely Bones too..did you read the book? It was much better, as usual.

  20. Morgan @ Healthy Happy Place on January 23, 2010 at 1:01 pm

I got the Lovely Bones in the mail to screen it/vote on it, and I still haven’t watched it. I’ve heard nothing but bad reviews so I don’t want to waste my time!

  21. Melissa S. on January 23, 2010 at 1:27 pm

I heard that movie wasn’t so great…but it doesn’t surprise me. I love the book though…i hate that their totally ruining books with movies…like my sister’s keeper by jodi picoult? the ending is totally opposite…boo! that is what makes the book!

  22. Caitlin on January 23, 2010 at 1:31 pm

What is your take on protein powder, namely Designer Whey? I am looking for a semi-natural protein powder and am wondering if this is a good brand to try. Thanks so much!

BTW, your veggie plate looks awesome. I always choose the veggie plate at Texas Roadhouse! Yum yum!

    • Fitnessista on January 23, 2010 at 1:42 pm

      hey caitlin,
i love protein powder but know it’s always best to get your protein from real foods, as they aren’t as quickly passed through the body. my favorites are sun warrior brown rice protein and nutribiotic, and back in the day when i consumed cow’s dairy more often, designer whey was my favorite. the nutrients are awesome and the taste is amazing

      • Caitlin on January 25, 2010 at 6:41 pm

thank you so much for your reply! I will look into the other brands as well!

  23. Abby (Abby's Vegan Eats!) on January 23, 2010 at 2:23 pm

YOur veggie plate from din din looks fabulous.. right up my alley!!

  24. Karyn on January 23, 2010 at 2:36 pm

i need to read that book! i keep telling myself that i will but haven’t gotten around to it yet. bummer that the movie was a bust but that just means that i don’t have to feel pressured to see it before reading the book

  25. Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg on January 23, 2010 at 2:40 pm

Boo for The Lovely Bones not being good– I loved the book! 🙁

That food looks amazing! I feel like sometimes when you get the veggie plate at a restaurant, you get kind of cheated out of a good meal, but that dish looks awesome!!

  26. Ashley on January 23, 2010 at 3:16 pm

I have heard from many people that the movie is horrible. I really liked the book even though it was quite depressing. Week 1 was fabulous on the winter shapeup. I allowed myself a glass of Shiraz last night and a bit of cheese. 🙂

  27. Laura J. @ Health & Hotness on January 23, 2010 at 3:21 pm

What a bummer about the Lovely Bones. I really want to see it, but now I’m not so sure. Boo.

    Goat cheese fritters sound awesome!!

  28. Catherine on January 23, 2010 at 3:27 pm

Boo about the movie stinking! I had a feeling that would happen… I loved the book, but when I saw the previews I definitely had my doubts. The dinner with the pilot looks lovely though.

  29. **Lauren (Biochemista)** on January 23, 2010 at 3:28 pm

    Hey chica 🙂

I added you to my blogroll…Is that cool? I don’t know the etiquette as I’m new to the blogging world 🙂 🙂

    xx

    Lauren

  30. Tina on January 23, 2010 at 3:45 pm

I have no desire to see that movie and you just solidified it. I didn’t even care for the book all that much because I thought it was just weird. Thanks for the heads up!

  31. Lauren @ eater not a runner on January 23, 2010 at 3:48 pm

Too bad about the Lovely Bones, I loved the book.

  32. Nancy on January 23, 2010 at 4:18 pm

You have the cutest plates. Great for portion size.

Where do you buy your plate? Especially the one with the egg puff 🙂 so cute.

Hope you don’t mind me asking.

    • Fitnessista on January 23, 2010 at 4:19 pm

      thanks!
don’t mind at all… the coffee plates are from home goods and everything else is from target or world market 🙂

    *plates?

    sorry

  34. Gracie @ Girl Meets Health on January 23, 2010 at 4:20 pm

Those goat cheese fritters are making my mouth water! I’m going to be on the lookout for them when I eat out from now on. You don’t happen to have a recipe for them do you? 😉

    • Fitnessista on January 23, 2010 at 4:23 pm

nope, i have no idea how they made them! SO good though

  35. Ashley @ Good Taste. Healthy Me on January 23, 2010 at 4:56 pm

I love Biggest Loser and I love watching Jillian, but like you I was not happy when I saw the commercial for her supplements! I highly disagree with the use of diet pills as a healthy way to lose weight. It proves that she is doing something for money NOT rather than her clients best interests. Grr!

  36. Ashley @ Good Taste. Healthy Me on January 23, 2010 at 4:57 pm

Sorry I just realized I commented on the wrong post! I clicked the wrong link in google reader haha. SO my comment was for the previous post (which I’m sure you figured out). 🙂

  37. Valerie on January 23, 2010 at 5:15 pm

I thought The Lovely Bones was absolutely fantastic! I read the book a couple of years ago, and of course the book is always better. But the movie still rocked.

  38. Cheryl on January 23, 2010 at 5:43 pm

Where do you teach your classes? Are you taking on any new clients?

    • Fitnessista on January 23, 2010 at 8:26 pm

      hey cheryl,
i teach at the base gym. i’m fully booked for clients right now, but do have a waiting list going- if you’re in valdizzy, please shoot me an email and i’ll let you know when a slot opens up! 🙂

  39. Steph on January 23, 2010 at 6:03 pm

Six weeks without wine would kill me! My husband and I are loving the Intro to Iron workouts – thanks!!

    Have a great weekend!

    • Fitnessista on January 23, 2010 at 8:25 pm

i’m so glad you like them!

  40. LisaCazz on January 23, 2010 at 6:05 pm

I was so disappointed in the movie too! I thought they played up the creepy murderer angle way too much! I love seeing all your bfast cookie creations, btw. I have a little issue with oats, but I do all the add-ins for my cream of buckwheat. 🙂

  41. Katie on January 23, 2010 at 6:29 pm

Hehe I hear you about Shiraz… love it! I just got the “Three Buck Chuck” kind at Trader Joe’s… it’s surprisingly delicious!!!

(May or may not have picked up some goodies today ;-))

  42. Jenna on January 23, 2010 at 6:33 pm

    Yummy dinner!

  43. Karen on January 23, 2010 at 6:47 pm

    Hi, Gina –
Kind of random, but I wanted to let you know that I bought one of the new Vega bars at WF today and just tried it. I think it is one of my favorite bars EVER!!! The ingredients and the taste are both fabulous, I just wish they were less expensive. Did you mention that you have heard negative reviews? Just curious as I can’t imagine what people wouldn’t like.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend,
    Karen

    • Fitnessista on January 23, 2010 at 8:24 pm

i’m so glad you liked them as much as i do!
      they’re AMAZING!
i just heard people say “they tasted like dirt”.. uummm, i think they taste like heaven 🙂

  44. Lily @ Lily's Health Pad on January 23, 2010 at 8:07 pm

I’m thinking of purchasing some spirulina. Should I be worried about a nasty taste?

    • Fitnessista on January 23, 2010 at 8:22 pm

nope.. just don’t have more than a teaspoon. then you will taste seaweed 😉

  45. Madeline on January 23, 2010 at 10:36 pm

THANK YOU soooo much for including the egg puff technique! I’ve been dying to be in on the secret. This revolutionizes breakfast.

  46. Kelli on January 23, 2010 at 10:40 pm

For me, would you mind fiddling with a recipe for the egg white puff cooked in the oven? I don’t have a microwave, I’m a little creeped out by them!
Also, an idea for you, how about giving a review/your opinion on Tracy Anderson workouts? I’d love to here how you feel. Like, can you get good results without using heavier weights? Does the average person really need 1 hour of sculpting, and 1 hour of cardio? I do need to lose weight, but that seems drastic. Stuff like that.
Also, the cookbooks you have mentioned that you love, I’d love if you listed with recipes are keepers.
I don’t usually comment, but I enjoy your blog.

    • Fitnessista on January 24, 2010 at 8:33 am

      hey kelli!
i’ll totally play around w an oven egg recipe, maybe using muffin tins??
i haven’t tried tracy’s workouts, but i’ll look into them
i’ll look through and find some of my favorite recipes, too. usually if its a fave cookbook, i haven’t made anything bad out of it!
      have a wonderful day <3

      • Kelly Michelle on January 24, 2010 at 9:57 pm

Sorry but I just had to chime in! Eggs baked in the oven are fantastic but take longer of course, you can make a big oven baked omelet obviously but you can also do little egg muffins in muffin trays and just keep them in the fridge for three or four days. You just beat the egg whites like normal ( I use lots of spices and a splash of almond milk although any milk works to make it extra fluffy) and you can mix in veggies/cheese if you wish (or sprinkle cheese on top about halfway through). I have seen tons of recipes online. Then you cook it in one big round pan, or muffin tray, or individual ramkins. If you don’t wanna heat the whole house you can bake just one or two in a toaster oven.

Hate to hear that about The Lovely Bones. I loved the book so much. That veggie plate looks yummy!

  49. Tyler Ramey on January 23, 2010 at 11:56 pm

Had my Spin-A-Thon today Gina! (check it out in the bloggy) It just got me wondering, what type of music do you normally do in spin? Do you go in phases? What do you concentrate on technique wise? I normally try to do surges, sprints, climbs, and lifts/jumps. I am always looking for great new music! Also, the green oats look FANTASTIC.

    • Fitnessista on January 24, 2010 at 8:35 am

      hey tyler,
i have a lot of my playlists under the playlist tab at the top.
we concentrate on the same stuff: surges, sprints, climbs and jumps. we also do crunches on the bike and tempo with hills.
      have a great day!

  50. Stefania on January 24, 2010 at 7:49 am

The Lovely Bones was such a well written and powerful book that I can’t imagine it being captured accurately in a movie. However, I do have one movie that I thought was way better than the book: One Flew Over the Cukoo’s Nest. It’s only the book that I read that was better as a movie.

Have a great Sunday. I’m off to hot yoga and kickboxing this morning.
