Polar Loop Review + giveaway time!

Hi friends! Hope you’re enjoying the long weekend <3 We’re driving back to Tucson after a fun and crazy weekend of house hunting and Disneyland. I’ll be back with my normal(ish) posting in the morning!

In the meantime, how ’bout a giveaway??

Loop 1 of 1

(Bella, wishing the loop came in her size, even though 19 hours of the day are spent lounging in between sprinting)

Quite a while ago, I was contacted about reviewing a Polar Loop. I was really stoked because it was something I’d been wanting to try, and even more exciting because it included a giveaway opportunity. In the meantime, I had already ordered another fitness tracker that was on the way. For the purposes of this post, I’m not able to do a side by side comparison, but hopefully my feedback will help you make the best decision for your lifestyle. There are pros and cons to the various types out there; it’s really about determining the best model for your needs.

I didn’t really become intrigued with fitness trackers until I started teaching at the resort. A TON of guests would walk into class with their respective gadgets, and as a techie curious person (not capable, just curious haha) I was definitely interested in the various types. When I stopped teaching at the resort, I was looking for ways to gauge my activity since I spent a lot more time seated throughout the day. I quickly noticed that it can be extremely challenging to get in the daily recommended 10,000 steps, especially when you don’t live in a walking-friendly city. (This is even when you’re chasing around a very active toddler!) Fitness trackers are a nice reminder to add some bursts of activity throughout the day, and can also provide some insightful data about habits and patterns.

One thing that excited me the most about the Polar Loop is that it’s compatible with Polar heart rate straps. I’d been a heart rate monitor fans for many years -especially while I was pregnant- and I knew I’d love the ability to sync the tracker during my workouts. My other fitness tracker counted “steps” via arm movements, so even when I was working out (especially with yoga, spinning and strength training) I knew my previous tracker was inaccurate. I’d be waving my arm around on the spin bike to get in my steps for the day 😉 The Loop seems to be more accurate, especially for workouts.

The first thing that alarmed me about the Loop was the size.

Loop 1 of 1 2

Thankfully, the Pilot was able to snip and reattach it. After that, it fit like a charm. I plugged it into my computer to charge and downloaded the app on my computer and phone.

Some things I noticed after a week or so of wearing:

Cons:

-No alarm! If this had an alarm of some type, it would be my perfect fitness tracker.

-The size. Even after fitting the band to my wrist, it’s still pretty thick. The simple band isn’t too much of an eyesore, but I’d love a daintier band.

-Basic sleep data. I wish it provided more info on my sleep patterns throughout the night. It gives me the duration but that’s pretty much it.

Pros:

-Longer battery life. I was pleasantly surprised with how long the Loop lasted without needing to be charged.

-Display. I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about it, but I LOVE being able to see steps, calories, time and activity right there on the wristband. For this reason, I didn’t drain the battery by synching it to my phone throughout the day.

Loop steps

-Heart rate monitor! I feel like this tracker is one of the most accurate versions if you’re going to be wearing it for everyday + workouts. It tells you your workout duration, time in the fat burning zone and fitness zone, and is extremely easy to use. It’s like the best of both worlds for heart rate monitors and fitness trackers. Also, because it’s a Polar brand, many cardio machines will sync and display your heart rate on the screen. Since it had been a while (since I was preg!) from the last time I’d used a HRM, I found that I was totally slacking on some of my workouts and could up the intensity. (cough, watching Downton Abbey on the spin bike, cough)

Polar data

All in all, I’m really happy with the Loop. I’ll be wearing it from now on, especially on the days I work out.

I have a Polar heart rate monitor so I would LOVE to try out the Loop!

I work in a school and I try to always walk to the staff member that I have a question for, and not always rely on a phone call or email.

I’m a technology teacher and my classroom is on the 4th floor. I am always asked to fix something on the lower floors. Even though I’m one of the oldest teachers, I gladly go up and down the steps fir more exercise.

  4. Jessie on February 17, 2014 at 6:20 pm

I try to get up and walk around my building during the work day several times. I’ll go to the farthest away bathroom, the farthest water fountain or go talk to coworkers instead of calling or emailing. I’m also a big fan of turning on some good music and dancing around the house when I do chores!

  5. Toryofmylife on February 17, 2014 at 6:20 pm

I purposefully am inefficient at work. I’m lucky that I work at the far end of the building so I’ll take longer routes to get places or make many trips instead of a one big trip to drop things off. I’m a nerd and once timed myself and found out that I walk for 7 minutes if I take my “long” route. So I figure if I do that 4 times a day that’s an extra 30 minutes of activity!

  6. Valerie on February 17, 2014 at 6:20 pm

I’d love to try one of these!

  7. Jaimie on February 17, 2014 at 6:21 pm

I’m always trying to walk around whenever I have a free moment at work!

  8. Shana on February 17, 2014 at 6:21 pm

I’ve been known to take the 15 flights of stairs up to my apt. 🙂

  9. Kristen on February 17, 2014 at 6:24 pm

I try to get up from my desk at least once an hour. On nice days I’ll take a power walk at lunch.

  10. Juliene on February 17, 2014 at 6:24 pm

i love using my 9 month old son as a weight for squats or bench presses. he gets the biggest kick out of it and my muscles benefit from the extra 20 lbs

  11. Alison King on February 17, 2014 at 6:24 pm

I try to park in the furthest spot possible when I go to a store.

  12. Julie on February 17, 2014 at 6:24 pm

Looks cool… thanks for the giveaway!

  13. Deanna on February 17, 2014 at 6:25 pm

I just wanted to say that if the Pilot is going to be working at Pendleton you should look at San Clemente! It’s awesome. If he’s down by Coronado, that doesn’t work so well, but I have friends who live in Pacific Beach and love it.

And you should think about turning your Disneyland tickets into Disneyland passes (I almost died of shock when I found out you could do that). It’s a fairly fast train ride away.

Next time you’re in SD, eat at Cucina Urbana. Amazing Italian food.

  14. lynzy on February 17, 2014 at 6:25 pm

I take stairs whenever i can, instead of an elevator!

  15. Donna on February 17, 2014 at 6:26 pm

I always park as far away as possible (safety in mind of course), I walk or ride my bike to work, and always take the stairs. Also I shovel my own snow, which has been a considerable amount this year!!!!

  16. melissa on February 17, 2014 at 6:26 pm

i teach PE, so when I’m able I try to jump in the warm up fitness activity.

  17. Angela on February 17, 2014 at 6:26 pm

I work in a hospital with 5 floors and take the stairs up and down to see the patients all day!

  18. Emily on February 17, 2014 at 6:27 pm

This sounds awesome. I have been comparing all the new technologies lately. Even when you did a review I wasn’t convinced. I get a lot of my activity in without actually walking/running. This fits my lifestyle so much more!

  19. Kristin on February 17, 2014 at 6:28 pm

Play on the Wii Fit when I have some extra time!

  20. Jackie on February 17, 2014 at 6:28 pm

I do some silly dancing with my kindergarten kiddos!

  21. Amanda A. on February 17, 2014 at 6:28 pm

  22. Kelly S. on February 17, 2014 at 6:29 pm

I would love to win the Polar loop it look’s aweseome!

  24. Danielle on February 17, 2014 at 6:30 pm

I walk to work and try to get moving at lunch either going to the gym or power walking the mall(only a little shopping I swear!)

I’m interested to see how many steps I actually take in a day!

  25. Molly Dunne on February 17, 2014 at 6:30 pm

To fit in extra fitness throughout the day, I try to do a short yoga routine and some squats before my lunch 🙂

  26. Norma on February 17, 2014 at 6:32 pm

I walk during my lunch and exercise at night. This would help me out a lot.

  27. Anna on February 17, 2014 at 6:32 pm

I love cranking up music on spotify and dance while cleaning and cooking 🙂 sometimes I’m graceful like a ballerina but most of the time I’m fierce like Beyoncé! Feel the burn!

  28. Chelsea @ Chelsea's Health on February 17, 2014 at 6:33 pm

I just finished grad school and started a more sedentary job. This would help me get my steps in!

  29. Sarah on February 17, 2014 at 6:33 pm

I take my dogs on walks. They get some energy out and I sneak in a few steps-we all win!

  30. Tracy on February 17, 2014 at 6:34 pm

I would love to have this. I have a Fitbit now and it’s hard because its nit accurate during spinning or weight training. 🙂

  31. Alli on February 17, 2014 at 6:35 pm

I am currently trying to figure out what kind of tracker is best for me. My birthday is in April and that is what I am asking for! 🙂

  32. Paige on February 17, 2014 at 6:36 pm

I do park pretty far away to get more steps in, plus I am a horrible parker as it is, so it works out well:). I also am more likely to do loops around the office and go talk to people vs. picking up the phone.

  33. Coco on February 17, 2014 at 6:36 pm

I take stretch breaks periodically throughout the day, and make sure to take a lap around the building so I’m not at my desk for hours on end!

  34. Ashley @ Life and Fitness on February 17, 2014 at 6:36 pm

I try to always take the stairs if I can.

  35. Mary Beth on February 17, 2014 at 6:37 pm

I run with the girls during basketball practice!!!

  36. Megan on February 17, 2014 at 6:39 pm

I walk to/from work (~1/2 hr each way with a hill on the way home)
Guarantees I get at least some fitness in 🙂

  37. Monica on February 17, 2014 at 6:40 pm

I get most of my steps by walking to work and back. I can usually get to 10,000 if I come home at lunch to walk the dog.

  38. Megan on February 17, 2014 at 6:42 pm

I do jumping jacks at work. But only when no one is around 🙂

  39. Sarah C. on February 17, 2014 at 6:42 pm

I use my water bottle as a reminder to stand up from my desk and walk to the next building, across the plaza, where there’s a filtered water fountain. It’s easy to sit there instead of filling it up, but I’m a thirsty girl and need the reminder to stand and take a quick walk every 45 min or hour.

  40. Isis on February 17, 2014 at 6:43 pm

I park a level up in the parking garage at work and walk down the stairs and across the lot to get in extra steps! I always try and take the stairs!

  41. Lindsay on February 17, 2014 at 6:43 pm

So excited to try the Polar Loop!

  42. Tracey L. on February 17, 2014 at 6:45 pm

I’ve been doing yoga at home almost every day! So fun!

  43. Emily on February 17, 2014 at 6:46 pm

We get a 10 minute break for every 50 min lecture at school, so I walk laps around the building (or outside if it’s pretty!) during our breaks.

  44. Kara on February 17, 2014 at 6:46 pm

I like to think I get in enough steps, but I’m sure this would be the wake-up call I need!

  45. Angie on February 17, 2014 at 6:47 pm

I try to get in extra steps by parking far away from my destination and always taking the stairs.

  46. Kate on February 17, 2014 at 6:47 pm

I work in a huge building and one lap around the inside of the building is about .4 miles. I make sure to do a lap whenever I need to clear my head or stretch my legs throughout the day.

  47. Rebecca on February 17, 2014 at 6:48 pm

I always sprint it up the stairs at work

  48. Christina on February 17, 2014 at 6:49 pm

I walk to and from work every day- 30 minutes each way! I also make sure to get outside at least for a few minutes at lunch.

  49. Rebekah B on February 17, 2014 at 6:49 pm

I stay home with my kids so if I realize I’ve been sitting for a while, which isn’t very often, I try to get up and move around and do something every hour or so

  50. Monica on February 17, 2014 at 6:50 pm

Rather than use the bathrooms across the hall, I take the stairs to the second floor bathrooms at my office building.
