20 Days of Detox

Hi friends! How’s your V-day been?

roses

(Pilot, you’re outta control.. and I love you)

So glad you guys liked the love story 🙂 I had a lovely Valentine’s Day with my madre, spent shopping and followed by the King’s Speech. We LOVED it. An excellent, well-made film, and Colin Firth is very nice to look at 😉

Late lunch courtesy of Chipoddle:

chipotle

Chicken salad with black beans and guac, hot salsa + pico, romaine

Since I’m on day 22 of the 30 day Dr Detox, I thought it would be a good time to for a lil update.

Days 11-20 were a huge challenge for me.

I could have fish, but no nuts or seeds yet, and wanted sweets with every part of my soul. Without goat cheese or nut butter on top of no sugar was a beast, and it made me crave treats more than ever. I selectively had a few tasty delights… on more than one occasion 😉 It wasn’t worth making myself crazy, ya know?

The cookies from the Twins (and the brownie bites) didn’t stand a chance.

goodies

They were delicious 🙂

It’s enjoyable now because I’m at the end of the tunnel (30 days are almost up!), and my eats are pretty much right back to where they used to be minus the grains (quinoa is the only grain on the plan). By having more freedom with my eats, I’m sure the cravings for sweets will be less beastly.

Saturday night, I will be having something gooey and chocolaty and a giant glass of vino 😉

The perks of the detox so far:

– I feel great this week. Maybe it’s because I shied away form the plan for a couple of treats? 😉

– This plan has forced me to become extra creative with my eats, step out of the box, and become very, very good friends with quinoa.

Quinoa muffin tops, anyone?

Or pancakes?

Or pizza?

Maybe a wrap?

lunch

-I’ve also experienced with castor oil this past week.. which was an interesting experience

castor

In an almond-shell, you soak the wool flannel with the castor oil and make a pack with it on your stomach (more towards the right side). The pack is secured with plastic wrap (which I just wrapped around my torso… thank goodness the roomies weren’t around), and you let it soak for about an hour. You can use the castor oil with a heating pad and it’s super relaxing and therapeutic. Castor oil is excellent for detoxification and is a multi-purpose little gem – read more about it *here*

-While the detox has been a better experience than I anticipated, I’m excited for it to be over. I’ve never enjoyed having others tell me how to eat and knowing *you shouldn’t have something* will just make you want it more. This is why it’s so important to give your body what it needs and craves without any rules.

Other re-caps:

Initial post (with all of the details)

10 Days of Detox

I’m off to make some dinner and then meet up with friends.

Have a lovely evening 🙂

xoxo

I’m going to look up the caster oil, I have never heard of that application before — is it just detoxing your organs?

  2. Ashley on February 14, 2011 at 9:17 pm

I’ve shied away from castor oil ever since my doctor tried to force me to take it when I was younger. Horrible stuff! I guess on the outside it might not be so bad. The flowers are gorgeous!

  9. Anna on February 14, 2011 at 9:41 pm

hi Gina! I signed up to win but I am going to buy a pair for myself anyways. Would you mind telling me what size you wear in the Wunder Under Crops? You look like you are about my size so I’m wondering if I should get the 2 or the 4. Thanks!

    • Fitnessista on February 14, 2011 at 9:50 pm

    • Fitnessista on February 14, 2011 at 11:42 pm

      it was FANTASTIC

  15. Michelle on February 14, 2011 at 10:06 pm

Omg. I LIVE in my wunder unders. I’ve been wearing them instead of tights under skirts (with boots) because it’s been so stinking cold in Boston! I was just contemplating a summer crop pair! My rommie calls them my “under roos” because she can never rememeber the actual name. 🙂

    • Fitnessista on February 14, 2011 at 11:42 pm

they’re the best multi-purpose pants… you can dress them up or down 🙂

  16. Ashley on February 14, 2011 at 10:07 pm

Keep the quinoa posts coming! I keep a cooked bowl of it in my fridge at all times and add it to whatever I’m eating. For awhile my boyfriend wasn’t into it and then last night I made veggie fried “rice” but with quinoa instead of white rice and he loved it.

  17. Rachel @ Healthy Teacher on February 14, 2011 at 10:12 pm

    Love ole Michael b.

We have done a castor oil pack before, a very times actually. And to be honest I am not sure if it really helped or not. I read good things about it, and heard from others, but I am not really sure for me it did anything. Maybe I need to do it more often, who knows.

    Happy Valentines Day Beautiful!!!!

Sounds like a lovely Valentine’s Day. Are you just ready to jump out of your skin with anticipation and joy now that you have a date for a Pilot reunion?
Your detox has been good for me. I have been getting inspiration from you and trying new foods based on your receipes. It’s been so fun working with new items.
    So,THANK YOU!!

    • Fitnessista on February 14, 2011 at 11:41 pm

um YES. i can’t freaking wait

  24. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on February 14, 2011 at 11:17 pm

Thank you for the indepth detox update, Gina!

I am sure it’s been a challenging month for you, but you have gotten thru it like a champ! And I know time flies (when you’re not the person doing it!) but the month has gone by sooo fast (for me!) just reading about it 🙂

Castor oil packs. Such a gem. So wonderful. If you ever have a baby and nurse and have any issues with clogged ducts, castor oil packs are wonderful for loosening up milk clogs…just wanted to chime in with some random lactation educator trivia there. haha!

Have a super VDay night 🙂

Dang girl, I’m seriously impressed with your detox skillz. It definitely takes a lot to be creative with what you could and couldn’t eat and still enjoy your food. For us foodies, enjoying it is a major deal!! Wahoo…lululemon. Love it!

I am obsessed with the styles lululemon has and need it in my wardrobe asap. I just found the closest store is near my brothers place! Now I have an extra reason to visit, hehe!

  34. Niamh on February 15, 2011 at 2:45 am

I love this post on your detox. I love the fact that you followed it responsibly and gave both the pros and the cons. I especially like the fact that you still had a few treats on the plan, though the no nuts and seeds sounds like absolute torture!
Glad you enjoyed your Valentines Day. Those flowers look lovely 😀
    xo

good work on your detox! i agree…”following rules” grows old pretty fast! all the best with the remaining days (hey – maybe end of detox coincides with return of pilot?! that would be nice!)

  39. Colleen @ The Lunchbox Diaries on February 15, 2011 at 6:16 am

I’ve been loving reading about your detox, and I’m glad to know that you actually feel good. I’ve shied away from them because I felt like “detox” was code word for “Mary Kate Olsen-esque starvation plan.” Thanks for setting my record straight!

  40. Stephanie on February 15, 2011 at 6:31 am

A friend of mine is on a detox – well, more of an elimination diet. She’s realized that she has a sensitivity to all sorts of different foods. Our bodies are fascinating things!

  41. christina on February 15, 2011 at 6:51 am

Please pick me to win! I just got a job offer to be a trainer at a country club and I need to wear “professional altehic attrie” and all I have is ratty sweats!!! I go today for my first day!!

  43. Kara on February 15, 2011 at 7:58 am

I was really worried when I started reading about the castor oil because I thought you were going to say you drank some. Women drink castor oil to try to induce labor (I guess the violent diarrhea can bring on labor?) and I’ve heard it’s very unpleasant! At least your way shouldn’t have any of those side effects 🙂

    • Tabi on February 15, 2011 at 12:01 pm

Violent diarrhea bringing on labor plus the above mentioned milk clogs have me more than a little traumatized to be a woman, right at this moment. hahah :O

  46. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on February 15, 2011 at 9:03 am

It’s been so interesting to read about your detox, but I agree that I prefer to determine my own diet, rather than have someone else tell me what I can/can’t eat. You totally deserve an entire BOTTLE of vino on Saturday for sticking with this. 😉

  47. Rachel on February 15, 2011 at 9:05 am

I just bought a pair of wunder under crops this past weekend. I wore them to yoga last night and LOVED them! For a reader’s request, would you mind do a list of your favorite lululemon items? I’m eying several things right now, but would love your opinion.

  48. Kat on February 15, 2011 at 9:17 am

I LOVE lululemon! I just recently checked out the store in my hood. I must say, I’m already addicted!! This is such a good giveaway. Congrats to whoever wins it!

  49. Amy on February 15, 2011 at 9:40 am

When something is off limits, that is when you want it the most.

  50. Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman on February 15, 2011 at 10:03 am

Preface: I’ve always been a dessert fiend. I’d eat dessert after every dinner AND lunch.

OK, so: I haven’t eaten sugar in a little over a month and at first I was craving it with every fiber of my being. But now? I don’t want it at all. The thought of eating something sweet makes my stomach churn. Instead of craving chocolate cake for lunch, I want real food. Natural sugars from fruits and veggies are plenty sweet for me now. In short: I promise it gets so much easier.
