Bright, shiny and NEW!

Hiiiii ๐Ÿ˜€ HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Hope everyone had fun celebrations last night! We certainly did, but I was a bum and didnโ€™t take a single picture :/ We had a lovely dinner with some friends at Liz and her pilotโ€™s house (spinach and salmon salad, brownies with ice cream and peppermint bark) and then came back to the casa a little before 12 to ring in the aรฑo nuevo.

The puppies have been resting all day.. apparently 2009 was a tough year for them

I slept in, crawled out of bed, and after taking a morning dip into the almond butter jar, I made an unconventional bfast.

bfast

Millet bread with maca and cinnamon, an egg with cayenne and roasted veggies (zucchini, onion, tomato and brussel sprouts with sea salt, pepper and garlic powder).

It was everything I could ever wish for ๐Ÿ˜€

Next, I hit up the gym for some leg action, which was a little tricky since the pilot and I ran 6 fast miles before our dinner party last night. By the end of todayโ€™s workout, my legs felt great.

I did some supersets:

Elliptical 5 minutes Crossramp 10, level 5
Superset 1:
Stability ball hamstring curl alternated with stability ball overhead pass
Body weight 4 sets of 15 of each exercise
Superset 2:
Standing lunges alternated with 45 second planks
Body weight 4 sets of 15 on each side for the lunges; 4 sets of 45 second planks
Superset 3:
Calf raises on a step alternated with side crunches
Body weight 4 sets of 15 on each side, for each exercise
Superset 4: Leg press with feet positioned higher to target glutes alternated with leg extension 120 lbs for the leg press; 35 lbs for the leg extension 4 sets of 15 of each exercise
Lots of stretching!
Total time: 50 minutes

This workout was KILLERRRRRRRRR. Supersets are an awesome way to train more effectively, since youโ€™re using an entirely different muscle while the other one rests. This enables you to train the entire time without taking rests in between sets. Ideally for supersets, you want to train antagonist muscles on the same day (which are muscles that oppose the actions of another- like biceps and triceps).

After my legs and abs extravaganza, I was ready for a smoothie!

I had a tropical superfood smoothie with vanilla Sun Warrior protein and spirulina

smoothie

It was face-rocking amazing ๐Ÿ˜€

I went to TJ Maxx to look at their yoga clothes โ€“got a shirt and a sports bra- then came back to the casa to make some bloominโ€™ onion bread

onionbread

1 cup raw sunflower seeds, 1 cup ground flax, 1.5 sweet onions, coconut aminos (!) and a splash of olive oil. Theyโ€™re un-cooking away in the dehydrator, and once again, my house smells like onion ๐Ÿ™‚

Snacked on two of the incredible vegan power cookies:

cookie

(gah! I need to paint my nails! Donโ€™t judge me, haha)

Iโ€™m about to do some laundry and then back to the gym for cardio and a training appointment. Tonight weโ€™re having INDIAN with Jeni and her pilot. I can taste the naan already ๐Ÿ˜€

Have a wonderful day!

xoxo,

Gina

Something to do: Make a vision board of all of the things you want to accomplish in the New Year! Iโ€™m going to work on mine this weekend and post it on Monday ๐Ÿ™‚

that cookie at the end looks great. I ate about 10 that looked just like that last night, however they weren’t Vegan power cookies… more like chocolate chip awesomeness cookies.

    • Fitnessista on January 1, 2010 at 3:25 pm

hahah chocolate chip awesomeness cookies are pretty delicious though ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Hi Gina,
    Happy New Year! ๐Ÿ™‚
I regulary read your blog (looove it) and during a bit of downtime today read a couple of your recent posts. Was just wondering why you chose to buy a Garmin and what your thoughts on it were (maybe a future post?)
Im looking to buy a heart rate / fitness monitor and am a bit unsure what to buy :S

    • Fitnessista on January 1, 2010 at 3:32 pm

hey! i got the garmin because i really wanted to know my distance and pace while i run. for aerobics and indoor activities, i use a polar f6

  3. Jackie on January 1, 2010 at 3:30 pm

for the raw bread- do you process it all together, or is it just mixed together before put in the dehydrator???

    • Fitnessista on January 1, 2010 at 3:31 pm

i process everything separately because you want the onion to be chunky and not too watery, then mix it all in a bowl

Love supersets! I rarely work out with rests in between. If my clients ask when we are rest, I tell them when our sessions is ovvvvah! ๐Ÿ™‚

I like the idea of a vision board, I’ll have to think about that. And what is Maca like? It sounds good slashhh I want to try it ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Fitnessista on January 1, 2010 at 6:22 pm

maca has an earthy malt taste. it’s excellent with chocolate ๐Ÿ˜€

  11. Lauren on January 1, 2010 at 4:49 pm

so how do supersets work? do you do four sets working one muscle, and then 4 sets working another muscle then just go back and forth working just those two muscles?

    • Fitnessista on January 1, 2010 at 6:22 pm

back and forth working just those two muscles..
like 1 set of chest presses, 1 set of compound rows, 1 set chest press, 1 set compound rows, then switch to the next two groups

Indian food! YUM YUM YUM! I’m jealous…despite having just spent over three months in India, i still crave the stuff on a daily basis- nothing like some hot piping garlic naan and some super spicy baignan bharta or channa masala to go with it!

  14. Katie on January 1, 2010 at 5:27 pm

I want my Excalibur to get here, already! That bread looks really easy to make! ๐Ÿ™‚

      hey brenda,
check out my friend gena’s blog, choosingraw.com she has so much info about eating raw, as well as some amazing recipes! i also recommend ani phyo’s cookbooks to get started (raw food kitchen is amazing)- her recipes are simple and delicious.
best of luck to you and don’t let your fam get in the way of you doing what’s right and healthy for YOU.
      xoxo

Neat to see you mention a vision board! I’ve done treasure maps for the past few years. This year I’m doing a dream “book” instead to hit different areas of my life and ebb and flow as my goals change or are added to. It really helped me (the maps) keep sight of what was important to me as the weeks and months ticked by.

  17. Stella @ EcoStella on January 1, 2010 at 5:40 pm

A vision board is a great idea! I have a couple vision/look books that I’ve made over the years but a goals board would be really good to have in the house as a reminder of goals and accomplishments.
