A girl walks into a bar…

Hi friends!

What a productive and fantastic day.

Lots of errands, helping the Pilot get everything together to get his new wheels (and going out for a joy ride!), hanging out with my nana, lunch with a friend, conference call, and quality Snoogle time with Bella. You know 😀

photo (92)

Since I was in the Whole Paycheck neighborhood, I stopped in to buy a couple of things for dinner the next two nights –guess who has been meal planning! Kapow- and found these little gems:

bar

New-to-me bars.

I’ve kind of strayed from bars because a lot of the gluten-free ones are nutritional garbage, except for Larabars, which I love with all of my soul but they don’t have very much protein.

Check out the stats on these babies:

bar (2)

15g of protein + chocolate. Winner. I’m excited to try one at work tomorrow.

For dinner tonight, I rolled with a classic:

joes

Snobby Joes.

This recipe uses lentils instead of meat, and non-veggies enjoy them, too. They’re also super easy to make, but prepackaged boiled lentils from Trader Joe’s transformed it from a 20-minute meal to a 10-minute meal. I’m ok with that 😀

lentils

The Pilot enjoyed his with on bread, with sweet potato fries + an organic hot dog on a bun with sweet pickles

joes (2)

and I had my Joe’s atop greens with fries and a sweet pickle 🙂

snobby joes

Hit.the.spot.

While we munched our dinner, we watched extremely intellectual TV programming… like Wipeout.

Falling is hilarious. I’m really mature like that.

I love short weeks because they go by faster, but also because they go by faster [if that makes sense?]. The exciting thing is that my friend Mara is coming to visit this weekend!! Lots of shenanigans to look forward to 😀

We’re off to take Bella for a rainy weather walk and then hit the gym. I think I’ll do the Schweaty Elliptical workout again 🙂

Enjoy your night and I’ll see ya in the morning!

xoxo

Gina

Something to talk about: Do you rely on bars for snacks/meal components, or not a fan? What’s your fave?

That protein bar looks goooooood… 😉 Those snobby Joes look great too. I would love to try them! Perfect for summer and the day after the 4th of July!

Haha! Wipeout is such a stupid, yet funny show. I love it! The “Big Balls” never fail to crack me up. 😛

  3. Jaime on July 5, 2011 at 11:00 pm

definitely not a fan of bars. I prefer real food 🙂

  4. Jenny @ Fitness Health and Food on July 5, 2011 at 11:04 pm

mmm I love the look of those snobby joes! 🙂 Such a great idea!

I do like bars though I don’t rely on them. Picky Bars from NaturaStride are my favorite! 🙂

  5. Holly @ The Runny Egg on July 5, 2011 at 11:05 pm

I used to love Clif bars and Larabars — not so much anymore. I just don’t find them satisfying!

  6. Dorry on July 5, 2011 at 11:05 pm

I try not to rely on bars, but agree that Larabars are amazing (and 100% real food for matter)! And for more nutrients, I love Vega Bars, but they are so expensive at $3.29/each! Very rare occasions…

    • Fitnessista on July 5, 2011 at 11:11 pm

omg vega bars are my all-time fave, but they’re SO hard to find

      • Gillian on July 6, 2011 at 7:41 am

They’re super easy to find in Canada! Send me an email if you want me to send you some 🙂

        • Fitnessista on July 6, 2011 at 10:37 am

          thank you!!

      • Alison (Fueling for Fitness) on July 6, 2011 at 10:21 am

I second Gillian’s offer. They are everywhere in Canada. 🙂

  7. Katie @ Nourishing Flourishing on July 5, 2011 at 11:07 pm

Lentil Sloppy Joes are on regular rotation in our home 🙂 So good! Kudos to you for getting your meal plan on! I flake out on the first night usually… bahaha 😉

  8. simi on July 5, 2011 at 11:07 pm

I will be making Snobby Joe’s this weekend!! 🙂 Looks and sounds so yummy.
I like Lara and Luna bars… I usually eat as a snack in between lunch and dinner when I get that 3pm crash and need sugar.

  9. Katelyn @ Chef Katelyn on July 5, 2011 at 11:10 pm

Ohhhh my god. I LOVE MacroBars. That is my fave flav, too! The banana one is also fannnnntastic!

    • Fitnessista on July 5, 2011 at 11:11 pm

yay! i’m even more excited to try it now 🙂

  10. J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) on July 5, 2011 at 11:17 pm

That snack bar looks perfect for Dustin who needs compact snacks high in pro and cals.

    I love snobby joes!

  11. Ariffa on July 5, 2011 at 11:22 pm

you’re going to love the macrobar! They’re super tasty and the ingredients are so impressive. I splurge on them at school a few times a week, they’re expensive buggers.

  12. Abby @ Abz 'n' Oats on July 5, 2011 at 11:28 pm

Can’t wait to hear what you think of that bar! 🙂 I find them helpful when I am in a hurry but I try to limit eating them to busy times. Snobby Joes look yummy!

  13. Kim (the crunchy kind) on July 5, 2011 at 11:32 pm

ive been wanting to try lentils but couldn’t find something that wasn’t intimidating… I’m super stoked to try these snobby joes 🙂

  14. Krystina (Organically Me) on July 5, 2011 at 11:36 pm

Those bars are awesome! I’d buy them more often if they weren’t almost $3 a piece.

  15. melissa on July 5, 2011 at 11:41 pm

Wipeout is on the tv right now as I’m typing this…

    🙂

  16. Sonia the Mexigarian on July 5, 2011 at 11:41 pm

All these commens on macro bars really make me interested in it1 Now i want to try. lol. I like bars, but try not to rely on them for any meal replacement. Generally I have a bar (Luna, Lara, Clif, SoyJoy, 18 Rabbits which I LOVE) in my purse as a snack, preworkout or post workout fuel. It helps keep me from attacking the fridge 🙂

I LOVE Wipeout. I usually watch it at my MILs sine she records the entire season and it’s just more enjoyable to be laughing with other people at the failures and our favorites on the screen.

  17. Kilee on July 5, 2011 at 11:45 pm

I love bars for snacks. I used to have Luna bars all the time until they got weird & chemical tasting. I also think that they have malt barley syrup in them, which is a gluten-free no-no. Nowadays I like Larabars, peanut butter Thinkthin bars and Purebars. I’m actually doing a giveaway on my blog this week for a package of the Purebars.

Have a great evening and hooray for a short week!

  18. Sarah C on July 5, 2011 at 11:54 pm

I am suoer excited for your macrobar tomorrow! I have yet to try the peanut butter, but I love, love the coconut granola. Have you tried Probars? I used to eat them for breakfast when I was pregnant and waking up for work at 4 inthe morning.

Anyway, hope you have a great rest of your week!

  19. Laura on July 6, 2011 at 12:08 am

I am OBSESSED with Macrobars… I think I’ve tried every flavor there is now! My favorite is “Almond Butter & Carob”.

  20. mi-an on July 6, 2011 at 12:37 am

love the tunes you posted this morning! esp the ones by pitbull and lmfao! ahh i just saw the video for that song, i want to learn their movies! so sick! 🙂

    i love larabars! the.best!

  21. eve on July 6, 2011 at 12:46 am

Oh man, that clip cracked me up way more than it should of. I think being on that show would be SO fun, except for the inevitable pain. I think someone needs to build a wipeout ‘light’ obstacle course and then have me try it! 🙂

  22. Ali @ urbanfruitbat on July 6, 2011 at 1:21 am

I am for sure not a bar fan. I feel like they all have WAY to many ingredients. I think if I was gunna do it, they would have to be home made!

  23. Ali @ urbanfruitbat on July 6, 2011 at 1:21 am

  24. Stefanie @thenewhealthy on July 6, 2011 at 1:30 am

Larabars are my absolute fave! I love trying new bars, but so far I haven’t found any that I love as much as my laras! 🙂

  25. dep on July 6, 2011 at 2:46 am

The lunabar pic reminds me of my ‘organic’ bars from Canada. There are several varieties but i can’t help buying the choc and orange one (weirdly this has one of the lower sugar counts versus the fruit versions of the bar). Yeah they are organic etc but like that lunabar the first ingredient is brown rice syrup and they have the same amount of sugar 19g. I checked some candy bar labels and this bar has more sugar than pure candy bars. I mean really? Kinda sucks to be able to emblazon it with organic but have such lousy stats. But hey, i’m totally addicted to them so i guess they’re achieving their purpose for the company.

  26. Kris | iheartwellness.com on July 6, 2011 at 3:19 am

Yea Baby!!! I heart those bars…..especially in the Cashew, highly recommend 🙂

    Mmmm
    xxoo

  27. Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga on July 6, 2011 at 4:50 am

Macrobars are good! I used to buy them quite a bit a few years ago when I was doing more bars but in recent years I just dont eat that many bars and the ones I do eat, I make. But I will never give up Balance Cookie Dough bars or Balance Golds. Chemicals and all. I dig those things 🙂

I have a Sloppy Bean & Lentil Joes recipe that I make and even using raw lentils/not premade ones, it’s still only a 20 minute one-pot effort, which I am okay with. Your pic of no bun is what I do too…I wrap mine in lettuce or eat without a bun and scoop up on things like cucumber rounds. I’d rather skip the buns!

Im impressed youre cooking AND working AND working out! 🙂

  28. Janiek on July 6, 2011 at 4:51 am

    That bar looks good! <3

  29. Brittany on July 6, 2011 at 6:27 am

I used to rely on snack and meal bars A LOT (especially South Beach), but lately I’ve been much more into actually preparing meals. It makes the meal much more enjoyable 🙂

  30. Cait @ Beyond Bananas on July 6, 2011 at 6:30 am

I don’t like to eat bars too much!! I feel they don’t fill me up and there are tons of other things that I prefer to snack on!

  31. Yolie @ Practising Wellness on July 6, 2011 at 6:31 am

I love how you modify the meals you share with the Pilot, so that you both eat similarly, even though you both eat differently 🙂 xyx

  32. Jessica @ Sushi and Sit-Ups on July 6, 2011 at 6:45 am

I’ve been wanting to try bars as a quick pre-gym snack but I’m afraid to get more bad stuff than benefits. I try to munch on fruit or yogurt, but I may try Larabars soon!

    THIS WEEKEND!!!!!!!!!! yaaaaaayyyyyy!!!!!!!

  34. Erica on July 6, 2011 at 7:11 am

I really need to try the snobby joes, I would love them for sure but the rest of my meat-eating family may even give them a chance…since your Pilot likes them and all;-)

HAHA, and we totally love Wipeout! I know it’s redic but I crack up everytime someone face plants on the big balls…yep I just said that. Maturity is overrated;-)

    xoxo

did you ever see MXC (most extreme elimination challenge) on SPIKE? we used to watch that in college all.the.time and it completely made my day. youtube some of that stuff…falling IS hilarious 🙂

    • Fitnessista on July 6, 2011 at 10:37 am

omg YES- tom and i were talking about it last night!!! hilarious

  36. sarah (sarah learns) on July 6, 2011 at 7:53 am

i’m always nervous to try new bars because i’m so picky about what i like! i loooooooove larabars with a passion though – and i’m ok with sticking to them! 🙂

  37. Stephanie on July 6, 2011 at 8:07 am

I loooooove Simply Bars. They’re gluten-free, vegan, non-GMO and really crispy…the texture reminds me of rice crispie squares minus the marshmallow. They’re sweetened with agave. They have 16 grams of protein and about 150 calories. And the best part is that they have only 8 ingredients, all of which are real pronounceable food. Yep, I’m a huge fan! I eat one every day.

  38. Hillary on July 6, 2011 at 8:26 am

I’ve never been into the bar thing. I need MEALS, and regardless of how many calories/grams of fiber or protein they have, I just never feel satisfied!

  39. Kelly on July 6, 2011 at 8:44 am

Those Macrobars are AMAZING! The Cashew flavor is my favorite! They are so clean…I love it!!

  40. Krista on July 6, 2011 at 8:59 am

I actually love slimfast bars, although they’re not GF. I know the nutrition isn’t as great, but for 200 calories (or the 100 calorie snack bars) they’re pretty delish and makes me feel like I’m eating a legit chocolate bar. My favorite is the butterfinger crunch snack one. When I was on a GF diet, I went for Kind bars and still keep a few in the house for emergency days. I might have to try those next time I go to Whole Paycheck- and they’re putting one about 3 blocks from where I live!! Please put a review of the bars! I’m also glad you’re feeling back to normal 🙂

  41. kaila @ healthy helper! on July 6, 2011 at 9:10 am

I’ve never made snobby joes but I really want to now….cause they look darn delicious!

  42. Lauren @ Fun, Fit and Fabulous! on July 6, 2011 at 9:11 am

I usually eat atleast 2 meals a daybout of my lunch box including snacks so bars are definitely convenient. Even though I love Larabars and Luna bars, I try to limit myself to one a day to keep the sugar in check! Those sloppy joes look delicious!!

  43. Lindsey @ Happy or Hungry on July 6, 2011 at 9:37 am

I was watching Wipeout on the treadmill at the gym and I was DYING. Absolutely dying. I could not stop laughing. I must have looked like a freak.

I am a big Sloppy Joe fan, I’m going to have to try this lentil version!

  44. Brigid of Vegging out in T-Town on July 6, 2011 at 9:37 am

I used to eat tons of Luna bars in college, but I haven’t been a big fan ever since. They never fill me up, no matter what. I’ll admit to grabbing one occasionally if I’ve overindulged in wine the night before, but I tend to stick to whole foods. Of course, I’m not the workout beast you are.

I love lentils but have still never tried Snobby Joes. Sometime soon!

  45. Jaime on July 6, 2011 at 10:02 am

I used to like bars because they are so EASY! And I’m lazy 😉 When I stopped eating most processed food, I more or less gave up on bars. That said, Macrobars are my absolute fave and I would definitely still have them from time to time if they sold them anywhere around me. I’ve only ever seen them at a specialty grocery store near my parents’ house, but now I am going to have to see if my Whole Foods has them!

  46. Erin on July 6, 2011 at 10:02 am

Try the snobby joe recipe with red lentils – I use them everytime, from dried ones, and they are ready SO fast, maybe 15 minutes? And they make a smoother snobby joe which I really like. Such an awesome recipe, it is one of my go-to recipes also!

  47. Andrea @ Onion in My Hair on July 6, 2011 at 10:16 am

When I used to work out at night, Wipeout would ALWAYS be the most popular show being watched on all the cardio machines.

It used to crack me up that we would all be huffing and puffing, yet laughing at all the same parts.

It really made the cardio minutes fly by. Love Wipeout!

    • Fitnessista on July 6, 2011 at 10:36 am

you’re right, that would be an awesome cardio show

  48. Karen @ MyVeganland on July 6, 2011 at 10:16 am

I am so going to try those sloppy joes- looks so yummy! I also love larabars but I find that I am sometimes hungry like an hour later- maybe its the lack of carby/fiber? I haven’t watched wipeout yet, I was watching Blue Bloods last night which reminds me of my old hood.

  49. Mary ( What's Cookin' with Mary) on July 6, 2011 at 10:32 am

I hardly ever eat bars, but if I do it’s either a raw revolution bar (love the mini’s) or a chocolate coconut luna bar. Sometimes a girl’s gotta eat on the run!

  50. Amber on July 6, 2011 at 11:24 am

Bars are great when you’re on the go. My favorite are Perfect Foods Bars (found in Whole Foods, usually in dairy section or refrigerators by checkout). They are amazing and SO satisfying!! The Fruit and Nut or Cranberry Crunch are my faves!
